What is street crime?

According to Oxford dictionary, street crime is an action or omission


which constitutes an offence that happens in a public place, usually in
a town or city, and is punished by law. There are many types of street
crime that could happen in our daily life, for instances, robbery,
pickpocketing, kidnapping, illegal drugs trade, snatch theft and so on.
Street crimes are normally conducted by a group of individuals that
have a common goal of gaining illegal money through criminal acts. In
Malaysia, snatching is a very common street crime that happens
almost every day. The most collective indication of snatching is
womens handbags or purses being grabbed by motorcyclist. Besides,
the snatch theft criminal has also targeted expensive cameras and
mobile phones. Sometimes, it is even more serious when the snatch
theft would cause fatalities. There were cases when the person holding
onto the handbag has been dragged by the motorcycle all along the
road and subsequently experienced serious injury.
Crime statistics compiled by Habibullah and Baharom in 2008 showed
that the crime rates in Malaysia in the last three decades rose between
1 to 8% per year. More than 80% of these crime committed were
related to street crimes such as burglary, vehicle theft and snatch
theft. But what more worrying is, violent or serious crimes like murder,
robbery, rape and abuse have increased in a larger scale between 4 to
10% per year.

Ways to overcome street crime?


1. Work with public agencies and other organizations on solving
common problems.
2. Set up a Neighborhood Watch or a community patrol, working with
police
3. Develop and share a phone list of local organizations that can
provide counseling, job training, guidance, and other services that
neighbors might need.
4. Emphasize prevention as the preferred way to deal with violence.
Ask what schools, law enforcement agencies, public health agencies,
libraries, workplaces, religious institutions, child protective agencies,
and others are doing to prevent, not just react to, violence. What
policies do they have to prevent weapons-related violence? How can
they help the community?

5. Organize to help clean and repair the parks and to report suspicious
and illegal activity to the police.
