TALKOUTLINE

I. OVERVIEWOFTHESACRAMENTOFRECONCILIATION

This sacrament is known by many names like sacrament of forgiveness, the

sacramentofConfession,andthesacramentofConversion.

(John20:2223)Allofusneedthesacramentofpenance,becauseallofusare
sinners. (1John1:89). We cannot say that there is no need to confess our sins to the
priest, and that we can confess our sins straight to God (Matthew 16:19). Penance
remitsallsins,andgivesusthesanctifyinggrace.

II. GUIDEFORAGOODCONFESSION(basedonthewww.catholic.org)
1. A basic requirement for a good confession is to have the intention of returning to
God like the prodigal son (Luke 15:1131) and acknowledging our sins with true
sorrowbeforehisrepresentative,thepriest.

2. REMEMBER, if you need helpespecially if you have been away for some time
simply ask the priest and he will help you by "walking" you through the steps to
makeagoodconfession.

3. BEFORECONFESSION,letusbetrulysorryforoursins.TheessentialactofPenance,
on the part of the penitent, is contrition, a clear and decisive rejection of the sin
committed, together with a resolution not to commit it again, out of the love one
has for God. The resolution to avoid committing these sins in the future
(amendment)isasuresignthatoursorrowisgenuineandauthentic.Thisdoesnot
meanthatapromisenevertofallagainintosinisnecessary.Aresolutiontotryto
avoid the near occasions of sin suffices for true repentance. God's grace in
cooperationwiththeintentiontocorrectourlifewillgiveusthestrengthtoresist
andovercometemptationinthefuture.

4. EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE, recall your sins. Calmly ask yourself what have
done with full knowledge and full consent against Gods commandments (Ten
Commandments). When was my last good confession? (Refer to the Guide for a
GoodConfessionBookletSeeAppendix)

5. AFTERCONFESSION,givethankstoGodforforgivingyouagain.Ifyourecallsome
