SUB-APPLICATIONS

Event lighting
Event lighting requires powerful and impressive light in different colors and color
temperatures in order to create fascinating
effects on stage. Moreover, it is also important that lamps can be changed quickly and
without fuss. OSRAM offers ideal solutions
for these tasks. The intelligent Lok-it! system, for example, enables lamps to be replaced in seconds with just one hand
even when the lamp is still warm.
Club and DJ lighting
Club and DJ lighting calls for powerful light
with intense colors from small and compact
units, such as moving-head lights and
scanners with high color temperatures.
Spotlights, dazzling light and other lighting
effects complement the rhythms of the music and make club evenings and live performances the special events they are designed to be.
Architainment lighting
The challenge with architainment lighting is
to create intense colored lighting effects
over large areas. The light sources should
provide high light output and extreme color
stability but also be energy-efficient and
durable. In addition, thermally and mechanically stable lamp design is essential in order to achieve perfect results in harsh operating conditions. Different color temperatures give designers more freedom than
they have ever had for creating spectacular
displays, day and night.

HTI are metal halide lamps similar to HMI lamps but use
short-arc technology.
The most important properties and benets
Short arc
Daylight character
Compact dimensions
High luminance
High luminous efcacy and efciency

Safety
Because of their high luminance, UV radiation and high internal pressure during operation, HTI lamps may only be
operated in enclosed lamp casings specially constructed
for the purpose. Appropriate lters must ensure that UV
radiation is reduced to an acceptable level. Mercury is released if the lamp breaks. Special safety precautions must
be taken. Information on safety and handling is available

Safety
Because of their high luminance, UV radiation and high internal pressure during operation, SIRIUS HRI lamps may
only be operated in enclosed lamp casings specially constructed for the purpose. Appropriate lters must ensure
that UV radiation is reduced to an acceptable level. Mercury is released if the lamp breaks. Special safety precautions must be taken. Information on safety and handling is
available on request or can be found in the leaet included
with the lamp or in the operating instructions.

Safety
Because of their high luminance, UV radiation and high internal pressure in both the hot and cold state, XSTAGE
lamps may only be operated in enclosed lamp casings
specially constructed for the purpose. Always use the supplied protective jackets when handling these lamps. They
may only be used as open lamps if appropriate safety
measures are taken. More information is available on

UNIVERSAL HALOGEN APPLICATIONS

UNIVERSAL HALOGEN APPLICATIONS

Universal halogen applications

SUB-APPLICATIONS

Halogen lamps for medical, industrial and

effect lighting
Tungsten halogen lamps offer instant and
brilliant light as well as a constant color
temperature. In addition, they are environmentally sound (mercury-free) and allow
for easy operation and dimming. Lamps
filled with xenon gas (HLX types) provide
up to 10 % more light output compared to
lamps with identical electrical data. With
anadditional IR coating on the bulb (XIR
types), even an increase of up to 30 % can
be achieved.
Halogen lamps cover a wide variety of
different applications. In the medical field,
they are used for analysis, diagnostics, microscopy, surgical lighting etc. In club and
DJ lighting, they are favored because they
are dimmable, easy to operate and robust.
Moreover, they are also applied in numerous industrial sectors due to their infrared
radiation, e.g. for curing or hardening of
different composites. Halogen lamps with
reflector are used for light guide applications (e.g. endoscopy) and effect lighting
(e.g. small scanners).

Studio, stage and TV lighting

SUB-APPLICATIONS

Studio lighting
High-quality studio lighting plays a major role in creating unforgettable scenes in TV and movie productions.
Just like the actors, the lighting has to perform at a
high level. The most important factors are first-class
color rendering, different stable color temperatures,
maximum color fidelity and, of course, an overall performance worthy of an Oscar.
Stage lighting
The right stage lighting presents stars in their best
light. When musicians, comedians or entertainers
make their grand entrance, the lighting has to create
impressive effects and an inspiring atmosphere. Stable color temperatures, high luminance and outstanding luminous efficacy are absolutely essential for this
application.
Film and TV productions
Creating moods that speak to the emotions is one of
the main functions of lighting and makes it a central
design element in film and TV productions. The light
must have excellent color rendering and offer stable
color temperatures as well as perfect color fidelity.
The end result is first-class entertainment and better
viewing figures.
Theater lighting
Theater lighting has to meet very high demands. Unlike in film and TV productions, there is no way in
stage plays to increase tension by clever editing and
camera angles or to focus on crucial details. The light
sources should therefore be extremely powerful and
produce impressive effects in different colors. OSRAM
offers a wide range of solutions for theatre lighting
from individual lamps to complex modules.
Video applications and professional photography
When long photo sessions are being held in a studio,
the lighting needs to be reliable and durable and create the right mood. For video applications and professional photography, OSRAM offers lighting solutions
that are characterized by their robust and stable lamp
design, outstanding color rendering, high light output,
optimum quality and complete safety.

Regarding their design, halogen line-voltage lamps can be

categorized as single-ended or double-ended lamps. Depending on the application, they are designed to operate
on 230 V, 240 V or 120 V. The color temperature of the
lamps varies according to the application: 3,400 K for
maximum luminous efcacy, 3,200 K for professional lm
and TV work, 3,000 K or 2,900 K for applications where
long life is important.

Literature
For further information on pinch technology, please refer
to the following brochure:
Good vibrations. New halogen lamps with quartz pinch
technology.

Some lamp models are available in bulb pinch technology.

The thin and sensitive lament is attached directly
(pinched) to the quartz glass bulb. This patented pinch
technology ensures that the lamps have a longer service
life and protects them from vibration and impact.

High-performance HPL halogen lamps are manufactured

under license from ENTERTEC Inc., L.A. The special
arrangement of the lament segments is matched to the
Source Four spotlight family of Electronic Theatre
Controls (ETC). This arrangement makes optimum use of
the generated light and achieves the same useful luminous
ux for which 1,000 W lamps had previously been required.
The QXL halogen lamp with the special bayonet base can
be changed without tools and without opening the spotlight.
The special base, equipped with XS technology, permits a
base temperature of 450 C. This patented lamp for entertainment and architecture applications has been developed
in cooperation with Electronic Theatre Controls (ETC).

Safety
To prevent personal injury or damage to property, PAR
lamps may only be operated in suitable luminaires designed with suitable mechanisms (grids etc.) to ensure that
in the event of a lamp bursting no parts/shards can escape. Because of the heat produced only heat-resistant
lamp connections (holders) may be used. Do not operate
near people, or any materials that are ammable, sensitive
to heat or affected by drying out. Detailed information is
available on request.

SUB-APPLICATIONS

Cinema film projection

Lighting for 35 mm film projectors is essential in every cinema. Despite the digital
revolution, the 35 mm film format continues
to attract large audiences and invites them
to enjoy the classic cinema experience.
Lamps for 35 mm film projectors should
have a high light output, an optimum daylight color temperature and a compact construction. With its excellent xenon lamps,
OSRAM provides outstanding solutions for
cinema film projection and lets even old
stars appear fresh.
Digital cinema projection
Light in digital projectors turns a visit to the
cinema into a unique experience. The lighting is used to transfer digital signals to the
screen and present images in razor-sharp
detail and in better quality than ever before.
Lamps for digital cinema projection need to
have a compact design, provide high luminance and last a long time. With its new
generation of high-performance xenon
lamps, OSRAM offers the right lighting for a
large number of different digital projectors,
underlining its position as the world market
leader in cinema lamps.

UV APPLICATIONS

UV applications
SUB-APPLICATIONS

Terrariums and animal solariums

Lighting in terrariums, zoos and for rare
species must meet the specific requirements of the animals. For years, zoo
keepers and livestock owners have relied
on artificial UV and infrared light. This can
be used to provide the right conditions for
the particular species and helps promote
healthy bones and shells.
Cleaning and disinfection
Radiation for sterilization requires light
that is particularly powerful, yet kind to
the environment. High-energy UV-C lamps
provide the perfect solution for this task.

Surface cleaning
Before inorganic or plastic surfaces can
be coated, painted or glued, they must be
thoroughly cleaned. For this, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation is the perfect
method.

Surface activation
Irradiation for surface activation requires
highly efficient and powerful radiation
sources. Thanks to its high-energy photons, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation
delivers perfect results.
Ozone production
Vacuum ultraviolet light also ensures
maximum performance in ozone production. Thanks to their compact design,
OSRAM excimer lamps are ideally suited
for local and immediate ozone production.
Paint matting
With the high-energy radiation from excimer lamps, an extremely hard matt surface can be achieved without the use of
matting agents.

Photopolymerization
Irradiation for photopolymerization has
become an indispensable method in various manufacturing processes. To ensure
perfect results, radiation sources from
OSRAM meet the highest demands.

Various materials have the ability to convert invisible ultraviolet radiation into visible light (uorescence effect).
L18/73 and L 36/73 are lamps that emit long-wave UV
radiation and therefore excite uorescence. They are
therefore ideal for all applications involving uorescence
analysis.
The lamps generate radiation only in the long-wave UV
range between 300 nm and 400 nm. Visible radiation is
almost completely absorbed.

INFRARED HEATING

Infrared heating
SUB-APPLICATIONS

Outdoor and indoor zone heating

Infrared heat lamps are used wherever
rapid and targeted heat is needed in the
home, at work, indoors or outdoors. Only
the object or person targeted is warmed,
with no time-consuming preheating time.

Paint drying
Infrared lamps are also perfect as radiation sources in drying processes for water-based paints and varnishes. They offer
not only rapid response times but also
maximum efficiency.

Keeping food warm

Short-wave infrared lamps have been
used successfully for many years to keep
food warm in restaurants, hotels, canteens and other catering establishments.

RTP applications
Tungsten halogen lamps are used to generate infrared radiation in semiconductor
applications such as RTP (Rapid Thermal
Process), changing materials on base
plates for chips or wafers.

Processing of plastics
Heating processes for molding plastics
must offer maximum efficiency. For this
reason, infrared radiation has become
more and more widespread in numerous
industrial sectors.

Paper and printing industry

In the paper and printing industry, infrared
radiation is the first choice for various
heating processes. Above all, it is a very
reliable drying method for paper finishing.

Steel coating
Powder coating of steel is an eco-friendly
alternative to liquid paint coating. Shortwave infrared lamps have proven to be
particularly successful in this application.

Reflow soldering
Reflow soldering calls for lamps that are
not only durable but also offer good control through short response times. Shortwave infrared lamps meet this requirement with high reliability.

AIRFIELD LIGHTING

Aireld lighting
SUB-APPLICATIONS

Approach, runway and

taxiway lighting
The right lighting on airfields
is fundamental for ensuring
safe landings and take-offs at
night and in poor weather
conditions. Lighting is used to
mark out the important areas
of the airfield. The light sources are integrated in appropriate obstacle lights, either set
into the ground or installed
above ground. This calls for
lamps that are shock-proof
and can withstand the vibrations that occur when aircraft
take off and land. In addition,
special safety regulations require a uniform and durable
light output to ensure that aircraft movements run smoothly.

1) Despite a transverse lament, the lamp can be inclined at any angle in s90 position

Safety
To prevent personal injury or damage to property, halogen
lamps may only be operated in suitable luminaires designed with suitable mechanisms (protective shields,
grids, etc.) to ensure that in the event of a lamp bursting
no parts/shards can escape and that during operation no
ultraviolet radiation can escape. There must also be a
warning sign to indicate that the lamps give off high levels
of heat. Detailed information is available on request.

MICROLITHOGRAPHY

MICROLITHOGRAPHY

Microlithography
SUB-APPLICATIONS

Exposure of integrated circuits

High-quality exposure of integrated circuits
is crucial for trouble-free production processes. In the semiconductor industry, such
exposure is used to create complex structures on microchips. Top performance and
maximum precision are absolutely essential. Short-arc mercury vapor lamps from
OSRAM are ideal for exposure processes
for integrated circuits. In addition to optimum radiated power in the blue, violet and
ultraviolet spectral ranges, they offer maximum possible precision and outstanding
reliability.
LCD panel exposure
Without LCD panel exposure, crystal-clear
TV pictures would be impossible. Most liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have an active
matrix display with thin-film transistors
(TFTs) in which the pixel structure is transferred to the glass by means of lithography
processes. Lithography processes require
high-intensity UV light. OSRAM HBO lamps
meet this requirement and help bring
breathtaking pictures to life.
PCB exposure
PCB exposure is an essential process in the
production of most electronic equipment. It
is used to create patterns on PC boards or
printed circuits which will eventually be
part of electrical and electronic devices.
Light sources for this application must provide high-intensity ultraviolet light and offer
maximum precision. These are precisely
the properties offered by powerful OSRAM
HBO IC lamps, which are ideal for use with
exposure masks.

MEDICAL LIGHTING

88

MEDICAL LIGHTING

Medical lighting
SUB-APPLICATIONS

Endoscopy lighting
First-class endoscopy lighting is essential
for precise diagnoses in minimal invasive
surgery. Endoscopes require lamps that
provide optimum artificial daylight and the
highest quality of light. Only in this way
can cavities in the body be perfectly illuminated.

Bilirubin therapy
Placing new born babies under blue light
is a preferred method of treating them for
jaundice. The short-wave light enables the
bilirubin to change into a water-soluble
isomer. It can then be excreted from the
body. This treatment calls for lamps of exceptional efficiency, quality and durability.

Microscopy lighting
Operating microscopes enable structures
to be examined that are invisible to the
naked eye so that highly precise incisions
can be made. Lamps for microscopy lighting should have good color rendering,
high luminance and as little infrared radiation as possible.

Dental treatment
Mercury discharge lamps and LED solutions are used for tooth whitening and for
hardening composite fillings with blue
light. Maximum reliability and a stable
light output are the key criteria for these
applications.

Surgical lighting
Reliable surgical lighting is indispensable
in any operating room. It provides the best
possible view of the operating table and
the patients tissue and is therefore crucial to the success of the operation.
Thanks to their excellent performance,
lights sources from OSRAM have been the
first choice for surgeons for many years.
Surgical headlights
Surgical headlights provide additional
light precisely where the surgeon needs it.
They illuminate local areas and provide
perfect conditions for accurate work.

Wellness and therapy

Like natural sunlight, the light from shortwave infrared lamps not only provides
pleasant warmth and a feel-good atmosphere, its intensive infrared radiation also stimulates cells and organs in the human body. This makes these lamps ideal
for beauty treatments at home or in clinics.
Scientific lamps
Scientific lamps are used whenever a
monochromatic radiation is needed in
optics, radiation physics, spectroscopy,
chemical engineering or medicine. They
emit the line spectrum of inert gases and
metal vapors with high luminance and
radiance.

Medical analysis
In medical analysis (blood analysis, preventative investigation etc.), good lighting
helps deliver precise results. Reliable and
powerful light sources are essential here.

The lamps must be installed only in the burning positions specied. Any other burning positions may lead to premature failure of the lamps.
Where:
s = standing (base down)
h = hanging (base up)
p = horizontal (base at the side)
Permitted angle: The number after the letter for the main burning position indicates the permitted angle of deviation from the main burning position in degrees.

The lamps are guaranteed only if they are operated with

approved control gears or with control gears declared to
be suitable. A list of sources of control gears and igniters
is available on request. With the exception of the XBO,
LINEX and XERADEX product families, all discharge
lamps contain small quantities of materials which are

harmful to the environment (such as mercury). In Europe,

they therefore have to be disposed of under EEC Code
0604 04*, Waste containing mercury, or 20 01 21*, Fluorescent tubes and other waste containing mercury. In other countries, the relevant national regulations must be followed.

Glossary of the most important lighting terms

As with any technical or scientic discipline, lighting technology has its own special terms and concepts for dening the characteristics of lamps and luminaires and for
standardizing the units of measurement.
The most important terms are described here.

Light and radiation

Light is taken to mean the electromagnetic radiation that
the human eye perceives as brightness, in other words
that part of the spectrum that can be seen. This is the radiation between 380 and 780 nm, a tiny fraction of the
known spectrum of electromagnetic radiation.

Luminous ux \
Unit of measurement: lumen [lm]
Luminous ux \ is all the radiated power emitted
by a light source evaluated with the spectral sensitivity
of the eye and the photometric radiation equivalent km.

Luminous intensity P is a measure

Luminous intensity P
Unit of measurement: candela [cd]
Generally speaking, a light source emits its luminous
ux\ in different directions and at different intensities.

Polar diagram

of the luminous ux \ emitted in

solid angle .

Luminous intensity is the luminous ux radiated in a

particular direction (solid angle ).

Illuminance E
Unit of measurement: lux [lx]
Illuminance E is the ratio between the luminous ux
and the area being illuminated.

Illuminance E

An illuminance of 1 lx occurs when a luminous ux of

1 lm is evenly distributed over an area of 1 m.

Luminance L
Unit of measurement: candela per square meter [cd/m2]
The luminance L of a light source or an illuminated area is
a measure of the impression of brightness.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Luminous efcacy d
Unit of measurement: lumen per watt [lm/W]
Luminous efcacy d indicates the efciency with which the electrical
power consumed is converted into light.
Color temperature
Unit of measurement: kelvin [K]
The color temperature of a light source is dened in comparison with
a black body radiator and plotted on what is known as the
Planckian curve. The higher the temperature of this black body
radiator, the greater the blue component in the spectrum and the
smaller the red component. An incandescent lamp with a warm white
light, for example, has a color temperature of 2,700 K, whereas a
daylight uorescent lamp has a color temperature of 6,000 K.

Light color
The light color of a lamp can be neatly dened in terms of color temperature. There are three main categories here:
Warm White < 3,300 K
Cool White 3,3005,300 K
Daylight > 5,300 K
Despite having the same light color, lamps may have very different color rendering properties owing to the spectral composition of their light.
HQI/N
HQI/D

Color rendering
As a rule, articial light should enable the human eye to perceive colors correctly, as it would in natural daylight. Obviously, this depends
to some extent on the location and purpose for which light is required.
The criterion here is the color rendering property of a light source.
This is expressed as a general color rendering index (Ra).

Extract from the chromaticity diagram showing the

Planckian curve

The color rendering index is a measure of the correspondence between the color of an object (its self-luminous color) and its appearance under a reference light source. To determine the Ra values,
eight test colors dened in accordance with DIN 6169 are illuminated
with the reference light source and the light source under test. The
smaller the discrepancy, the better the color rendering property of
the lamp being tested.
400

A light source with an Ra value of 100 displays all colors exactly as

they appear under the reference light source. The lower the Ra value,
the worse the colors are rendered.

Luminaire efciency
Luminaire efciency (also known as light output ratio) is an important
criterion in gauging the energy efciency of a luminaire. This is the
ratio between the luminous ux emitted by the luminaire and the luminous ux of the lamp (or lamps) installed in the luminaire.
Average life
The average life of a lamp is an average of the lives of individual
lamps operated under standard conditions (50 % failure = average life).
Service life
Service life is a simple practical measure of the economical life of a
lamp. It is the number of hours of operation after which the system
luminous ux (i.e. the product of the relative luminous ux and the
relative proportion of lamps still in operation) is around 80 % of the
initial value.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Disposing of your lamps and luminaires

EU directive 2002/96/EC WEEE relates, among other
things, to luminaires (with the exception of luminaires in
households), uorescent lamps, compact uorescent
lamps, discharge lamps including high-pressure sodium
lamps, metal halide lamps and low-pressure sodium
lamps. Since the start of 2010, LED lamps that can be
operated in standardized holders are also affected by the
directive, e.g. LED retrot lamps or LED tubes. Starters,
control gears and light-emitting diodes are classed as luminaire components and as such are part of the luminaire
disposal process.
All OSRAM products that need to be disposed of under
the WEEE directive are labeled with the symbol shown
here.

Incandescent lamps and tungsten halogen lamps do not

contain any substances that are harmful to the
environment and can be thrown away with household
waste.
All manufacturers must register with their relevant national
authority. Products from non-registered manufacturers
may no longer be marketed.
In Germany, OSRAM is registered as a manufacturer in the
Elektro-Altgerte-Register [Old Electrical Equipment
Register] (EAR) as number DE 71568000.
In addition, there are individual regulations governing the
disposal of lamps and luminaires in the other member
states of the EU and also in Norway and Switzerland. For
more information, please contact the local OSRAM
company.
The primary objectives of the WEEE directive are to reduce
the load on the environment, safeguard valuable resources
and protect the environment and public health.
All consumers (commercial and domestic) are obliged to
return old lamps for separate disposal. Collection points
have been set up for this. Consumers in Germany do not
have to sort the old lamps by manufacturer or by product
age. Lamps from private households and businesses (in
volumes of normal household proportions) can be disposed of at local recycling centers. Large quantities of
lamps can be disposed of via the Lightcycle scheme.

1) From March 23, 2006, there is an obligation in Germany to take products back

104

On behalf of lamp manufacturers, Lightcycle organizes the

logistics processes for disposing of the lamps cost-effectively and with minimal impact on the environment, both
directly and at local recycling centers. Lightcycle bundles
the volume to be transported and coordinates the collection logistics. You drop off your old lamps and Lightcycle
does the rest.
Disposal of luminaires from commercial applications is also handled by Lightcycle. OSRAM is a contract partner of
Lightcycle. Since 2010, luminaires can be disposed of directly throughout Germany at any one of 100 Lightcycle
luminaire collection points. In addition to dropping off luminaires at collection points, luminaires can also be collected from wholesalers, installers, building sites or customers. There are basically no volume restrictions on collection jobs. For large quantities, Lightcycle can set up an
individual permanent collection point. You drop off your
old luminaires and Lightcycle does the rest.

RoHS directive: 2002/95/EC
Greatly reduced mercury content
Since July 1, 2006, this EU directive has prohibited the
use of certain hazardous substances. The mercury content
in some discharge lamps has been restricted. As a company committed to the protection of the environment,
OSRAM is doing more than just meeting statutory requirements. Our objective is to reduce hazardous substances
such as mercury to the absolute minimum needed and to
promote the development, for example, of efcient mercury-free lighting systems. Because it promotes the use of
new environmentally friendly technologies and materials,
we comply with the RoHS directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) for the benet of the environment and
health.

FURTHER INFORMATION

labeling for luminaires, lamps and accessories

Products that fall under the scope of the European directives on low voltage (LVD, since January 1, 1995), electromagnetic compatibility (EMC, since January 1, 1992) and
the eco-design of energy-using products (EuP, since
August 11, 2005, and its applicable implementation measures) must carry the CE label in order to be sold in the
EU. The CE label indicates compliance with the principal
requirements of these directives. Of course, all OSRAM
products meet the requirements of the relevant European
directives and therefore carry the CE label.
Notes on CE labeling:
1. CE labeling as a requirement for marketing products in
Europe.
The CE label is applied to the product itself or to its type
plate (minimum height of the label: 5 mm). If this is not
possible in certain circumstances, the label may be applied to the packaging, if any, and also to the accompanying paperwork. The CE label is a requirement for sales
within the EU and must therefore be applied before a
product can be marketed. By applying the CE label to their
products, manufacturers and importers are conrming that
their products comply with the basic requirements of
special European directives and ordinances and that they
meet the stated objectives of the directives (electromagnetic compatibility, for example).
As a rule, these basic requirements are met if the products were manufactured in compliance with the relevant
ordinances and harmonized European standards.
2. The CE label is an administrative mark.
The CE label is an administrative mark addressed to the
national inspection agencies. The CE label indicates to
these agencies that the labeled product complies with European law at the time of its marketing.

Member of the
Frdergemeinschaft Gutes Licht
(Good Light Association)

106

3. Neither retailers nor consumers have the right to inspect

the conformity certicates of the manufacturers.
The right to request and inspect conformity certicates is
reserved exclusively for those market inspection agencies
responsible for checking that electrical/electronic products
comply with statutory requirements. In Germany, these are
the Bundesnetzagentur (Federal Network Agency, responsible in connection with the EMC directive), the Gewerbeaufsichtsmter (Trade Supervision Ofces, responsible in
connection with the low-voltage directive), the relevant authorities and the Bundesanstalt fr Materialforschung und
-Prfung (Federal Agency for Material Research and Testing) as the commissioned agency (in connection with the
EuP directive).
4. The CE label is not a seal of quality or an approval mark.
CE labeling relates solely to compliance with the statutory
basic requirements contained in certain directives and
ordinances. It is therefore not an indicator of the quality of
the product. The product features required in the ordinances for implementing the EuP directive are veried by
the manufacturers by means of type testing and conrmed
with the CE label. As an administrative label required by
law, the CE label should not be confused with the approval
marks (such as ENEC and BEAB marks) issued by independent inspectorates. These inspectorates do not even
check whether or not a product carries the CE label legitimately.
