DURGAPUR STEEL PLANT, DURGAPUR

INTRODUCTION
Human Resources Management (HRM) is the attraction, selection,
retention, development, and utilization of labor resource in order to achieve both
individual and organizational objectives. Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) is
an integration of HRM and Information Systems (IS). HRIS or Human resource Information
system helps HR managers perform HR functions in a more effective and systematic way
using technology. A human resource information system (HRIS) is a system used to
acquire, store, manipulate, analyze, retrieve, and distribute pertinent information about
an organizations human resources. The HRIS system is usually a part of the
organizations larger management information system (MIS) which would include
accounting, production, and marketing functions, to name just a few. Human resource and
line managers require good human resource information to facilitate decision-making.

with the advancement of modern technologies all the organizations are implementing
newer and better process and methodologies within their existing system. For any
organization to be successful in long run they need to establish their existence on solid
values and create a culture which works as catalyst to the organizational growth path.
Modern era organization like Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP), one of the largest steel
manufacturing company and my case study organization is implementing the system as
well which will ultimately lead to lower dependency on human interface and reduce error.
This kind of error free environment would be ideal for the organization. HR department
being a pivotal department plays a critical role in developing the organizations goal, In
this study we will find out the various processes and system implemented by Durgapur
Steel Plant that help the HR department to channelize the core competencies and how
these system can help an organization with the goal setting apart.

The study will tremendously help organizations who are continuously trying to improve
their functioning. In this era it has been really important to optimize expenses and
increase the revenue line items.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This study would entail details about the different information system
running within Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) which facilitate the HR department, how these
system reduce the redundancy, how it help creating a more efficient eco system in the
organization. I would try to figure out how top corporate manage these systems, what are
the expenses, what are the bottlenecks and how these can be overcome. The objective of
the study is also to analysis why an organization should implement information system
and what are the pros and cons they need to consider before doing so. The objectives of
the study are summarized as below:
o To study the concept of HRIS.
o To explore the benefits of HRIS in Durgapur Steel Plant.
o To study the difference between traditional HRM and HRIS.
o To determine the relationship between employee satisfaction and HRIS.
o To study and analysis various problems while implementing HRIS in Durgapur
Steel Plant.
o To understand the role of HRIS in strategic activities of HR departments in
Durgapur Steel Plant.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
In this study, the following methodologies would be adopted to achieve the aforesaid
objectives:
The researcher would use descriptive research method for conducting the research as it
will help in finding a better result of the research. The main characteristic of this method
is that the researcher has no control over the variables; he can only report what has
happened or what is happening. The data would be collected from primary as well as
some of the secondary sources. The primary data would be collected through a survey
conducted through a questionnaire which consists of both open-ended and close-ended
questions. The sample unit selected for the research would be employees of Durgapur
Steel Plant of various departments, and the method of the research sampling is
purposive sampling which gives the researchers to use their own judgment to select
suitable people for the sample and 30 respondents were approached for filling up the
questionnaire.

Stage-1 : SAMPLE DESIGN

o POPULATION

Population is a set from which samples are drawn. A population can be

defined as including all people or items with the characteristics one wishes to

understand. I have selected the management and employees of Durgapur Steel Plant,
Durgapur from the state of West Bengal.

o SAMPLE FRAME
Sampling frame is the source material or device from which a sample is
drawn. It is a list of all those within a population who can be sampled, and may include
individuals, households or institutions. For my research purpose I have selected
respondents who are currently working with Durgapur Steel Plant.
o RESEARCH TOOL
Data would be collected through well structured questionnaire
consisting of closed ended and opened-ended questions and also by in-depth interview.
A form containing a set of questions will be submitted to the respondents to gain
information. The questionnaire also contains a section which has certain factors which
are related to the likert scale.

o SAMPLE UNIT

: Employees of Durgapur Steel Plant.

o SAMPLE SIZE

: The sample size is 30.

o SAMPLING TECHNIQUE : Purposive sampling technique.

o SAMPLING TYPE

: Non probability judgment sampling.

o SAMPLING AREA

: Durgapur Steel Plant, Durgapur, West Bengal. INDIA.

Stage-2 : APPROACHES OF DATA COLLECTION

RESEARCH DESIGN:
DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH : The research is primarily descriptive in nature.
The sources of information are both primary and secondary. Approach constitutes of both:
I.Primary data.
II.Secondary data.

o PRIMARY DATA

: Questionnaire Analyses and in-depth interview.

o SECONDARY DATA : It refers to those data that was already being collected by
and analyzed by someone else. This data is collected from:

Reports.
Magazines.
Newspapers and books.
Internet.
Journals

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

o

As the study is based mainly on primary data and some of secondary data are
used in this study, the possibilities of personal bias cant be ruled out.

The researcher intention to reach to a large sample size could not be

accomplished due to lack of time and financial resources the intention could not
be accomplished upon the desired level.

Motivating the people for the survey was a challenging part of the survey.

The survey was limited only to Durgapur Steel Plant and does not cover all the
opinion of entire industy.

Due to secrecy maintenance in the organization some data could not included in
the project report.

DIRECTION FOR FUTURE RESEARCH

Organizations can use this information to understand their requirements
before implementing any kind of information system. What are the difficulties that the HR
department faces which can be easity resolved using this kind of system. How other
companies are successfully extracting benefits out of this process and why more and
more companies are following this path, all these details would be in the thesis report.
This report would significantly contribute towards the better functioning of HR
department and how they can improve efficiency of the organization.
