ROHINGYA SOLUTION RESTS ON ASEAN

Kuala Lumpur, Friday (June 12, 2015): The international conference on the Plight of the
Rohingya II - crime against humanity, today urged ASEAN to make the Rohingya issue a
permanent item in its Agenda if a comprehensive solution is to be realised.
It said it is time for ASEAN to review and resolve on the limitation of the non-interference
policy with regards to the internal affairs of member states.
A collective effort must be voiced to hold the Myanmar government accountable for the
persecution of the Rohingyas with the aim of ending the refugee and human trafficking
crisis, Tan Sri Norian Mai, PGPF Chairman said.
Malaysias foreign policy is geared towards fostering better relations with its neighbours.
However, due to the plight of the Rohingya, Malaysia has to move away from its noninterference policy to ensure a concerted pressure on Myanmar to shoulder the
responsibility, he said.
ASEAN, he added should collaborate on the Rohingya plight with Myanmar in the interest of
regional peace and stability.
He said - We are gravely concerned with irregular migration, smuggling of migrants and
trafficking in persons via land and sea involving vulnerable groups including women, children
and unaccompanied minors from Myanmar.
The Conference was attended by participants comprising representatives from the
diplomatic corps, international organisations, human rights group, academia, civil society,
non-governmental organisations and media as well as leaders of Rohingya organisations.
Tan Sri Norian said the ASEAN Community should view the Rohingya crisis seriously as it
greatly impacts the three pillars of ASEANs Political/Security, Economic and Socio-Cultural
well-being.
The conference and the resolution it adopted also urged Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to
play a responsible leadership role to resolve the Rohingya issue in Myanmar.
We have noted that for political expediency there is deliberate silence, inaction and refusal
on her part. We call on her to live up to her avowed principles in respect of human rights and
the rights of minorities in Myanmar so as to regain her credibility in the eyes of the
international community, he added.

The Honourable Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia and
President of PGPF, delivered the Keynote Address.
The conference featured high profile and prominent international speakers including Mr
Nurul Islam (ARNO President); YBhg. Gen. Tan Sri Mohd Azumi Mohamed (PGPF Trustee); Dr
Maung Zarni (Burmese Buddhist Scholar & Dissident); Dr Abdul Malik Mujahid (Burma Task
Force, USA); Mr Matthew Smith (Fortify Rights); Mr M Abdoel Malik R (Muhammadiyah
Disaster Management Centre, Indonesia); Dato Dr Ismail Nor (Altruistic Leadership Centre,
Malaysia); Reverend Alan Ray Sarte (Philippines); and Mr Jason Kay (Kuala Lumpur
Foundation To Criminalise War).
PGPF is calling attention to the plight of the Rohingyas which is to end their persecution and
the transnational human trafficking crisis, once and for all. The Resolution on the Plight of
the Rohingyas, Part II shall be presented to ASEAN Member Countries and world
organisations.
PGPF hopes that the conference will serve as a way to reinvigorate the advocacy of
energizing peace, as well as challenge the world society to dedicate them to achieving a
peaceful solution for conflicts.
