While Mt. Laurel Police continue investigating a threat made on

Parkway Elementary School during the primary election day on
June 2, township officials are focusing their efforts on moving
elections out of the schools.
Township clerk Meredith Tomczyk confirmed the township is
compiling a list of alternate locations to try to move polling places
out of school buildings and into
other suitable venues.
Tomczyk said she is looking at
various buildings and is in the
process of contacting those
places to see if theyd be willing
to be used as a polling place.

A bomb threat to Harrington

Middle School was called in to Mt.
Laurel Police on June 8 at approximately 9 p.m. It was the second
threat made on a Mt. Laurel
school building in less than a
week after a threat was called
into Parkway Elementary School
on June 2.
Shortly after the bomb threat
was called in, State Police bomb
detection dogs were called into
the school for a search. No threats
were found, and police sealed off
the school until the morning.
On June 9, the bags of every
student and staff member were
searched as they entered school
for the day. Nothing threatening
was found, and the school day
proceeded as normal.
Marie Reynolds, director of

communications for Mt. Laurel

Schools, said the search process
went as smoothly as possible.
We checked bags of students
and staff this morning and it
went really well, she said.
The school had a larger number of students absent than usual
on
Tuesday.
Despite
this,
Reynolds said the children who
were in school went about the day
as normally as possible.
The kids are fine in the halls,
she said. Theres no sign of
stress among the students.
The threat to Harrington Middle School was not an isolated incident last Monday. Lt. Stephen

the future of our kids a lot.
High school seniors, eighth

another in front of them.
Its a vast new world that these kids
and young adults are living in, one
that is drastically different from the
one in which their parents lived at
their age.
Technology has provided plenty of
good, plenty of opportunities that the
kids of even 10 to 20 years ago didnt
have. Its mind-boggling.
And its also potentially dangerous.
The Internet can give a person a voice

other areas, this is something plenty of

us would have loved to have had when
we were younger. With the opportunity, though, also comes the potential for
long-lasting damage.
Kids dont often listen to their parents and teachers when they try to
teach them lessons. So maybe they can
learn a lesson from pop star Iggy Azalea.
Last week, posts that Azalea made to
Twitter four years ago have resurfaced, with screen shots of her posts
showing insensitive sexual and racist

remarks. As a result, Azalea cancelled

a scheduled performance at Pittsburghs LGBT Pride event last weekend.
The Pittsburgh chapter of the Gay,
Lesbian & Straight Education Network didnt march in the Pittsburgh
Pride parade because Azalea was
scheduled to perform.
Azalea, who turned 25 years old this
month, is facing the music for things
she posted as a 21-year-old.
Its a lesson we can all learn from
once you post it, its there forever.
Even though Azalea deleted those
four-year-old Tweets, they were still
available for someone to find.
So, kids, be careful what you post.
Be careful what you do online. It may
seem innocent now, but it could come
back to haunt you years down the line.

MUA completes work

in Hunters Crossing
The Mt. Laurel Township Municipal Utilities Authority recently completed the replacement of
more than 1,850 feet of sanitary
sewer force main and installation
of 1,300 feet of water main in the
Hunters Crossing development.
Cost of the Mt. Laurel project was
approximately $550,000.
MUA Chairman Chris Smith
said, This is one of the many
projects which are part of the
MUAs plan to renew and improve
infrastructure within Mt. Laurel
Township.
The plan calls for mains that
were installed decades ago to be
replaced throughout the town as
necessary as they reach the end of
their useful life.
MUA executive director Pam
Carolan said Life expectancy of
buried pipes can vary considerably depending on many conditions such as acidic soils or buildup of iron.

The pipes in Hunters Crossing

service more than 150 homes and
were originally installed in the
1970s. A large amount of ground
water was entering the sewer system, either through loose pipe
joints or via illegal sump pump
connections.
A large buildup of iron in the
sewer pipes affected the ability of
the MUAs nearby pump station to
properly function and required
routine hauling of sewage by
trucks, Carolan said.
Trucking ceased when the
sewer main was placed in service.
The new water main will provide
a second source of water supply
to the neighborhood thereby reducing service interruptions.
Another benefit is that water
service is now available to homes
which are serviced by privately
owned wells, Smith said.
The MUA also repaved Country Lane as part of the project.

Still time to move polls out of schools

before Novembers general election

Laurel EMS Building and fire district headquarters.

The township decided to make
a push to move polling locations
out of schools following an incident during the June 2 primary
election at Parkway Elementary
School. At approximately 9 a.m.,
Parkway was put on lockdown
and voting was suspended after a
man called the school saying he
was inside the building with a
gun. Law enforcement officials
did a search of the school. No gun
or suspect were found.
While the threat was not found
to be credible, township and
school district officials agreed
about the security issues hosting
elections in the schools present.
The Mt. Laurel school district
has tried to get polling places removed from the schools in the
past. Marie Reynolds, director of
communications for Mt. Laurel
Schools, said the district looked at
the issue after an incident during
the 2004 election at Fleetwood Elementary School. A person wearing a hooded sweatshirt walked
into the schools all-purpose

room, where the polls were located, threw a bag of white powder
on the floor and ran away. While
the powder was later found to be
not harmful, the school had to be
evacuated and hazmat teams
called to inspect the scene.
After the incident, the board of
education made a decision to go
before the Burlington County
Board of Elections to try to get
polling places moved out of the
district.
Our board of education
formed a special committee to
study other locations in Mt. Laurel where people could vote,
Reynolds said.
A study was presented to the
board of elections in early 2005.
Despite the board of educations
efforts, the board of elections denied the request to move polling
places.
Since the Fleetwood incident,
Mt. Laurel Schools have done a
number of things to improve security. Schools are now closed on
the general election day. The district has previously used the primary election day as a staff inservice, but decided to make it a
school day a few years ago after
receiving complaints from parents.
To improve safety on primary
election days, the polling loca-

tions have been strategically

placed so voters have no contact
with students.
We isolated the voting in
areas closed off from the rest of
the school, Reynolds said.
Despite this, Reynolds noted
the threat at Parkway could have
easily been credible with adults
coming in and out of the building
throughout the day. She said
many parents contacted the
school district on June 2 and the
days following in support of moving the polling locations.
We totally understand when
parents say I have to show my
drivers license when I pick my
child up and youre allowing an
adult to come into the school to
vote, Reynolds said.
It is possible for the polls to be
moved out of the schools in time
for Novembers general election.
Tomczyk said once a list of new
locations is compiled, it will be
sent to council for approval before a formal request is made
with the county board of elections. The board has the final say
as to whether the polling locations can be changed.
If (the board of elections) approves it at their September meeting, the polling locations can
change in time for November,
Tomczyk said.

Police taking threats seriously, Riedener says

POLICE
Continued from page 2
threats were made on other
schools in the state.
There were several (last Monday) that were similar to what we
had, Riedener said.
The Harrington threat was also
the second in less than a week in
Mt. Laurel. On June 2, Parkway
Elementary School received a
phone call from a man claiming
he was in the school building
with a gun. The threat came on
primary election day, with voters
coming in and out of the schools
library. Voting was suspended
and the school locked down while

police searched the building. No

threat was found, and the school
and polls reopened later in the
morning.
Some have defined false threats
across the state as swatting. In
such a case, the suspect will call
in a false threat to get law enforcement to respond to a scene for an
investigation.
Riedener didnt use the term
swatting in describing the
threats, but said the police department does classify the cases as
false public alarms and is taking
them very seriously.
Tracking down a suspect who
calls in a false threat can be
tricky depending on how it came
in. Riedener said technology allows people to call from different

mediums and mask their identity

more than in the past.
Nowadays they can come over
computers, it can come over cell
phones, it can come over landlines, he said. Theres so many
things out there available to the
general public to hide their identity.
Mt. Laurel Police are considering the incidents at Harrington
and Parkway to be two separate
cases.
Right now its separate,
Riedener said. Theres no way
we can link them.
Anyone with information on
either of the two threats can call
the Mt. Laurel Police Departments confidential tip line at
