Abstract
AcrosstheglobethereisgrowingskepticismabouttheusefulnessofGDPasameasureofnationalwellbeing.Consequently,severalalternative
qualityoflife(QOL)measuresweredevelopedwhicheitheraimathealingtheGDP,complementingit,orreplacingit.Thischapterportrays
someofthesenewmeasuresandputsthemtoahappinesstest:comparedtotheGDP,arethenewQOLmeasuresbetterabletocapturewhat
makespeoplehappyandsatisfiedwiththeirlives?Usingdatafor34OECDsocieties,wecanshowthatfromahappinessperspective,thereis
surprisinglylittlewrongwiththeGDP,andmostalternativeQOLmeasuresdonotoutperformGDP.Yet,onemeasureactuallydoesabetter
job:theOECDsBetterLifeIndexwhichisparticularlyeffectivewhenitcomestopredictingsubjectivewellbeingintherichestOECD
countries.Insum,thechapterdemonstratesthatahappinessperspectivecanaddimportantinsightsalongthewaytofacilitatethesearchfora
new,widelyaccepted,internationallycomparablemeasureofwellbeing.
