EmotionalCompetenceinYoungAdulthood
Abstract
TheroleofAristotelianeudaimonic(moral)valuesinhealthypsychosocialdevelopmentisarapidlygrowing
areaofenquirythatcrossesthedisciplinesofphilosophyanddevelopmentalpsychology.Thepurposeofthis
studywastoexamineprospectiverelationshipsbetweenadolescenceeudaimonicvaluesdevelopmentand
indicatorsofemotionalcompetenceandpsychopathologyinyoungadulthood.Wetestedtworelatedhypotheses:
(1)thateudaimonicbehavioursinadolescence(indicatedbyactivitiesaimedatbenefitingotherindividuals,the
communityorsociety)wouldpredictgreateremotionalcompetenceinyoungadulthood(indicatedbysenseof
responsibility,autonomy,planfulnessandselfcontrol)and(2)thatemotionalcompetenceinyoungadulthood
wouldreduceriskforanxiousdepressivesymptomsatthesameageaftercontrollingforprioremotionaldistress
inadolescence.Dataweredrawnfromanongoing15wavepopulationbasedlongitudinalstudyofhealthand
development,initiallyrecruitedatbirthin1983.SEMwasusedtomodelrelationshipsandwasbasedondata
from991participants(384maleand607female).Consistentwithexpectations,adolescenteudaimonic
behaviourswereassociatedwithhigheremotionalcompetenceinyoungadulthoodwhich,inturn,wasinversely
associatedwithanxiousdepressivesymptomsatthesameage.Interventionsthatfocusonopportunitiesforthe
eudaimonicdevelopmentinadolescencemayplayaroleinpromotingemotionalcompetenceinemerging
adulthood.
