(Or) Discuss the differences between Indian and Western Astronomical concepts? Ans. ‘The’ Indian ast calculationsin Indian classical astronomy takes the observe and the resultant motion of planets are measured relative to the Earth, Whereas in the western astronomy. it is heliocentric. Here the sun is considered as stationery in the solarsystem with ll the planets moving round it In India Astronomy, Astrolggy developed as a twin science. Astronomy is considered as body and astrology as the soul. Astronomy was linked 10 philosophy and the eyclic origin ofthe universe where astrology is considered a soul and a Vedang. Here only angular position & motion of the planets, stars {ete were given prominence. In Western astronomy, the position of planets, sun ‘and stars were fixed and their motions were determined ic. they worked out linear distances & velocities. In west astronomy is a secular and_ physical In India, the astronomical points are also given importance in addition to the physical bodies like the node points of moon and other plants, motion, Cconjuniction points, astrological positions like Mandi, upagraha, karana, yoga. Right ascension etc are all calculated astronomically. In western system these arenotat all considered. In western astronomy, universe is said to have originated in a split second out of nothingness about 20 billion years ago (Big Bang theory). Butin India, in one Mahayuga (4.3.20,000 solar year) all the planets & other astronomical points complete an allotted no. of revolutions. The mean Revolution is fixed only by dividing the time of Mahayuga by the no. of Revolutions for each. Here time iy reckoned from the beginning of the Maha. yuga. ‘The system of measurement of time varies between Indian & Western astronomy. in Indian system, the day is related to sunrise to sunrise. Month is ‘measured from Amavas to next Amavas i.e. the exact conjunction of moon but in western system month isin relation to moon's motion round the earth. The year in Indian system refers tothe sidereal,.. the apparent motion in of Sun in the Ecliptc i.e. zero aries 10 next Zero Aries which is very different from the western. where year starts with January & ends in December. In Indian systems, wwe have the solar days, lunar months and call as luni solar year. In west the ‘months are divided into 30/31/28/29 days antl each day is divided into 24 hr In India, we follow the local time while in the West, the standard zonal time ig followed ‘The western system follows a moving point of zero reference which is the moveable Equinox position of sun in the first degrec of Aries but in India Chitra Paksha system, the zero point of Aries in exactly 180 opposite the star Chitha or Chitra, here the sidereal location of stars is fixed from zero degree of Aries (fixed) i.e. Ashwini with reference point at the end of Revathi, The ze10 Aries of west is above 61/4 in Pisces of Indian system. This angular distance between first point of Aris in Fixed & moveable zodiac is called Ayanamsha, Sidereal longitudes are followed in India whereas equatorial longitudes ane followed in west. These are referred as Nirayana and sayana longitudes respectively. Here Nirayana longitude = sayana longitudes - Aayanamsha, The changes due tothe precession of Equinox by 50.3" of anare every year ‘The Indian system, earlicr observations were ali made by naked eye and calculations: were made by using SUN DIAL, geometrical shapes & trigonometrically and allegorical calculations. The concepts of Devias accelerating & retarding motions in different directions was considered. They adopted the Epieyelic theory. The Westerners followed the Kepler theory/laws of planetary motion with mathematics & detailed calculations, ‘They also had telescopic observations & photographic records of heavenly bodies.
