A &agnetron oscillatesin responseto the transmissiontdgger to provide a microwave,
which is radiated faom the scanner unit. When the microwave ndiated outside from its
radiator strikes on any target, a reflected wave retums to the scannerunit, which transfers
it to a mixer in the rcceiver via a circulator, The receivedsinal is amplified in the rcceive!
and sent to the display unit as a video signal. The display unit presentsthe signala! a bright
echo on the cathode ray tube by meansof CCD.

2.3 SCANNERUNIT
(Type: N K E-189/189F llgOF/195-21195-41
The scannerunits is functionaly classifiedinto two major blocksr the radiatorand
rotary drivingassemblies
(pedestal). The pedestalhas two.cove$ at both sidesof the cable
g1and.In the Typcs NKE-190F and NKE-195, the drive motor locatesbehind the righthandedcover of the pedestat,as seenfrotr the cablegland.Behindthe lefl-handedcover,
the terminalboards, resolver, its buffer circuit, SHM circuit, rotation speedchangingcircuit
(prcvidedfor the NKE-190Fonly), etc. arehousedin the pedestal.
Type NKE-189hasa reverscstnrcturelor locationofthe abovecomponents.
Radiator
The radiator is composedol a slotted waveguide, electromagnetichom and
metallic gdd. The slotted waveguideradiatesa hoizontally polarizedwave.lt has
many siantingslots arrangedwith equal spacesalongthe narrow-sidewali of a usual
rectangularwaveguide. The electromagnetichorn providesa vertical directivity to
radiated beam. The metallic grid suppresses
the sidelobesof veitically plolarized
wave components. One end of the slotted waveguideis connectedto the rotary joint
thrcugh a waveglridefor feedingtlle microwave. The other end is terminatedwith
a dummy load, which will absorba very few power of the microwave, sincetho most
of it are Iadiated through ihe slots of the waveguide. The direction in which the
radiatedbeamis maximumis not peryendicularto the radiationsudace, but deviated
approximately4'to the dght from its azimuth.
The radiator is coveredwith a lowloss dieleciricsover the radiation facc in
order to reducethe reflectionlossof the radiatedwaveand comDleteits water-Droof.

Rotary DrivingAssemblies
The Rotary Driving Assembliescontainsa drive motor 8101, synchro resolver
9102, resolverbuffer circuit PC102, SHM ctucuit PC10l, rotation speedchanging
circuit PCl03 and scannerdisablingsaletyswitch5102.
The synchroresolveroperatesin responseto a squarcwaveof 4kHz with amplitude of l4vp-p fed from the displayunit and sendsthe bearingsiglal of the scanner
radiator to the display unit. The rcsolverbuffer circuit PCl02 transfe$ the resolver
signalto the displayunit without distortion. This circuit consistsof a complementary
emitter-followercircuit, which opeaates
asa curenr ooosler.
The SHM circuit Pclol has a reed switch 5101, which is normally open. Each
time the aadiatorrctaies, this switch is closedonce by the flux of magnetM10l to
permit a SHM signalto be generated.
At this time, a puisesignalof +20V is sentto
the displayunit asan SHM signal.
Thc rotation speedchangingcircuit lcl03 is provided in the NKE-190Fonly,
for selectingen scannerrotation speedof 26 rpnl lor a closerangescalelessthan
3 nm and anotherscannerrctation speedof l7 rpm for a far range scaleover 6 nln.
This changingis madewith either rotation speedchangingsietlalPBof 0V sent from
the displayunit when a rangescalelessthan 3 nm is selected,or changingsignalP8
of *24V when a rangc scaleover 6 Dm is selected.This changingsignalP8 ddves

2.4.3Modulator
This section is composed ol a charging circuit, switch cfucuit and tdgger cfucuit. A
modulatinghigh voltagesqualewaveof about 1880V synchronouswith the repetitionfte_
quency is alwaysappliedto the chargingchoke L2001 from the DC/AC conve{er traisformer. The teminal voltage of the PFN 22301 is chargedup to about l?00V by the
effect of the rosonantchargingwith L2001.
When setting the POWER switch on the contrcl panel in the display unit to ON,
a positive*oing pulse (transmissiontrigger) is sent from the display unit to th trigger
ci.cuit consistingof the tdgge. transfomer T2401, TR2401 and TR2402. This circuit
triggersSCR (CD2404- CD2409) in the s\{itch circuit, so that they ate instantaneously
conductive.TR2402 in the higger cicuit remainscut off so long as the modulatinghigh
voltageis +880V. lf somenoiseentersinto the triggercircuit, this transistorTR2402 will
not generateany output putseduringthe positivhalf cycleof the modulatinghigh voltage,
i-e.,du.ingthe chargingperiodofthe PFN.
When the SCR switch becomesconductive, accumulatedchargein the PFN discharges
through the choke coil L2301, SCR(CD2404- CD2409),and the pdmary windingof the
pulse transformerT2001, so that it causesa huh voltagepulse ol about 12kV across
the secondarywinding of the same pulse transformer. When this high voltagepulse of
-12kV is applied to the cathodeol the magnetronV201, it beginsto oscillate, providing
a microwaveoutput pulse, which passestlrrough the circulator and rotary joint to the
radiator. As a rsult. this radiator radiatesthe micrcwavepulse in ait. lts pulsewidthis

Solid-stateoscillator,high-frcquency
rcsistance
attenuatorand mixer circuit
The solid-stateoscillatorA301 (local oscillatoi)continuouslyoscillatesto provide
a frequencyhighe. 60MHz than the frequencyof oscillationin the magnetron. The
output of the local oscillatorA301 passesthrough the high-frequencyresistanceattenuatorRC301to alwaysfeedthe mixer diodesCD30l and CD302.
The frequencyof oscillationin the local oscillator,4.301is mechanicallyand
electricallyadjustablewith use of a scrcwfor mechanicaladjustmentand the tuning
control on the control panelin the displayunit for electdcaladjustment. The output
of the local oscillator,4301is fed into the mixer diodethroughthe attenuatorRC301,
and is adjustedto desiredpower level by RC30l. (In the Type NTG-260,both solidstate oscillatorand high-frequencyrcsistanceattenuatorR35l are incorporatedintegratedlywith the mixer, and the electronictuningis available.)
The mixer is a balancedtype mixer, employingtwo mixer diodesCD301 and
cD302.
In :he mixer, the noiseproducedin the solid-stateoscillator(localnoise)is cancelled,

in principle, to result in no noise coltained in the intermediate-frequency
For this reason, the signal-to-[oisemtio is improved to ensurethe most effective
mixing operation.As a rcsult, a good receive.sensitivityis assurcd.The intermediate
ffequencyproducedin the mixing operationis 60MHz.
(2) Crystalcurrentindicationcircuit
This circuit is availablefor checkingwhetheran adequatebias curent is appliod
to each of the mixer diodes or not. The operationaiamplifier of IC381 acts as
a window comparator,whichallowscurrents to flow in diodesCD38l and CD382
only for an input signalhayinga levlbetweentwo setvalues.
So long as the crystal curents arc within specifiedrangeof lmA 150%, i.e.,0.5 to
l.5mA, both th diodesCD381and CD382illuminate.If they areoutsidethe specified
range,i.e., excessively
low or high,neitherwill illuminate.
(3) Intermediate-Frequency
Amplifier Circuit
The intemediate-frequencyamplifier circuit is a single-tunedtype logarithmic
amplifiercircuit providedwith a bandwidthswitchingctucuit.It is composedofTR301
throughTR303, IC30t through1C307andTR304, forming seve.alstagesof amplifiers,
a all fiequencyof the eachstagebeingtunedin 60MHz.
A receivedsignalfrom the mixer diodesCD30l and CD302 is tuned in 60MHz
by L303, and amplified ir TR301. The output of TR30l is further amplified in.a
differentialamplifier of TR302 and TR303. To this atnplifier,a control signalproviding an STC curveis appliedfrom the disp.layunit. The outiut ofTR303 is connected
to either a narrow-bandctcuit of L306 and L30? or wide-bandcircuit of L308 via
a selector.The selecto!operatesin rcsponseto a switchingsignalfed from the display

The band-width of the intermediate-frequency amplifier circuit is selected,
dependingon the selectedrangescale,aslistedn TABLE24:2.
The intemediate-frequency amplifier cicuit features its logarithmic charactedstic.
1C301 thrcugh Ic307 are integratedcircuits for wide-bandamplification.Each has
a limithg characteristic, which limits the output detected curent when any hiSher

(4) Emitter-Follower Circuit
The signal from the loeadthmic amplifier passesthrough two stagesof emitteffollowersconsistingof TR305 and TR306. The ffial emitter-followersendsa video
signal of about -2V to the display unit by way of a coaxial cable of 50 ohsm. The
emitter of the final stageis combinedwith R330 to matchits output impedancewith
the coaxialcable'simpedanceof 50 ohms.

Such pulsesare integratdto provide a negativeDC voltage, whichis amplitied in
IC382 on PC302 enoughto illuminate CD383. The output of IC382 is sent to the
displayunit to illuminateits LED iamp. At the sametime, this output is alsosentto
lhe checkmeterin the tran<rniiter-receiver.
(6) Tuning VoltageOlfset Circuit
Since the mixer in the receiverNRG-16 incorpomtedin the Model NTG-260
containsthe solid-staieoscillator, its tuning is perfomed by the electronictuning
only. For this reason, the tuning voltageof+4 to +24V sent from the displayunit is
convertedinto a voltagennging from aboltt +4V to +17V in this circuit The tuning
ceniervoltageis about 10V.
(7) LOG Receiverwith AFC
For ihe NTG-250/260. a LOG receiverwith AFC is availableas an option
This recieveris capableof holding the best tuning, without adjustingthe TUNE contiol for tuning on the control panel ofthe displayunit. The intermediateliequency
amplifier circuit is identicalto that in the standardreceiver'Its AFC cifcuit operates
asdescribedbeiow.
A part of the microwaveoutput from the magnetrcnis picked up and detected
by CD353, and the detectedsinalis amptifiedin IC310 and lC318 3nd then applied
to the AFC discriminatorconsistingof 1C311 and IC312. Its center frcquencyis
the samefrequencyof 60MHz as that in the IF section. The discriminatorprovides
a DC output voltagedependingon fhe deviationftom its centerfrcquencyof 60MHz.
The tuning voltagefrom the disptayunit is fed thrcugh the level shift circuit to an
amplifier consistingof a part of IC312 and addedto the output of the discdminator.
The ouiput of lhe amplifier is fed to the emitter'followercircuit via the level shift
circuit. The emitter-followercircuit providesa tuning output voltagefor the solidsrdteogcillator.
The tuning indication citcuit is locatedon PC3001.The output of the discdminator is connectedto an amplifier consistingof IC300l to illuminate the lamp of
cD3003.
If the frequencyof oscillationin the magnetronvariedfor somecause, the fre_
quency of oscillationin the solid-stageoscillatoris automaticallyvaded10 maintain
the besttunedcondition,asdescribedabove.(Referto FlG. 2-4_4.)

The amplifier of TR42l4 amplifiesthe incomingvideo signaliiom J4207 up to appioximately ten times. The amplified video sjgnalis appliedto the baseofTR4217
after passingthrough the emitter follower of TR4223. In the usual displaymode,
the baseof TR421?is at HIGH level.Whensettingto the EBL mode,TR42l6 tums

appllcd to the baseofTR4219, which is held at a level of approximately3V. The
signal of 3V at the base is applied to the base of TR4220. When TR4221 is
on, TR4220 is also on. WhenTR422l is cut off, TR4220 is also cut off. Du ng the

Only when pressingbolh S and F pushbuttonsat the sametime, a LOW level signal

After setting the power switch to ON or when the VRM pulse cor.rntreaches

other casethan the above,1C4846is the high level at Pin@, which allowsthe output

Whenpressingthe UP or DOWNbutton, this clock is appliedto the lrP or DOWN

l h e. ' o u n ar r l h r i i m er s . t o r e d .
The VRM trigger with positive polarity is incoming from J4803-q, to the
inverter of IC4842. lts negativeoutput pulseis differentiatedat the down edgein a
differentialcircuit of C4811, R4832 and R4833 to producea pulseof abouto.s/rsec,
which is appliedto the load terninalsPia@ of ihe down countercircurtconsrstlng
of four stagesof hexadecimalcounte$ lc484l, IC.1840,IC4839 and IC4838, by
way of two statesof invertersIC4842. Thus, the VRM positioi shift data at the
output QA, Qg, Qg, and Qp of IC4834, IC4833, 1C4832and IC483l arc presetto
ln addition, the VRM tdgger passesthrough the two stagesof invertersto the
VRM indicatingcounterof 1C480?.
As a result.IC4807-@ is reset.say.MR master
reset. At the sametime, the down edgeof the VRM triggerpassesthrough the diflercntiatins circuit of C4812,R4834 and R4835 to set the flip flop of 1C4848.This
flip flop is reset by the borrow output at Pin@ oilC4838 to provide a VRM gate
pulse. This gate pulse al1owsthe 0.01 nm VRM clock jncoming lrcm J4805 to be
output at IC4848-O, which is usedfor the down clock of the counterIC484i.
After presettingthe countersof IC4841, IC4840, IC4839 and IC,l838 by the outputs
of IC4834, IC4833, 1C4832and IC483l, they down-countunder the control of the
down clock. When they reach a1l zero counts, the counter of IC4838 producesa
borow output at Pin @.
The borrow pulse representsthe position of the down edge ol the VRM gate
pulse, which corespondsto the VRM pulsepositionon the time axis.As the up-down
countersof IC4831 ttuough IC4834 changetheir contents, the VRM pulsepositionis
movedaccordingly.
The multivibrator of IC4847 generatesa pulse of about 1.6psecat the down
edgeof the VRM gate pulse, the VRM position. This pulseis a VRM pulse, whichis
sentto the videocircuit on PC405after passingthroughthe gateol IC4828.
The blanking signat BLK is alwaysapplied to Pin@ of 1C4828to cancelthe
VRM on the PPI sweeptrace, just after applicationof the EBL sweep.
When connectinga jumpe( between J4810 and J4809, the VRM pulse train
is inte.ruptedat a rate of about 10/256 kHz (about 39 Hz) to resultin a presentation
of dashedVRMIn casewherc the VRM pulseis outsidethe main gateor exceedsthe pulserepetition peiod, operationsarc madeasdescdbedbelow. So far as the VRM pulseis within
the main gate, a tdgger pulse with positivepolarity appearsat Pin@ of IC4845. If
the VRM pulse goesaway outside the main gate, a pulse will appearat IC4845-@.
Accordingly,IC4846 providesa HIGH level output at PinO when the VRM pulseis
within the mail1gate and a LOW level output when the VRM pulse is outside the
main gate.Whenth VRM gatecoincideswith the next VRM trigger,IC4835produces
a pulse with negativepolarity at PinO. Otherwise.jt remainsat the HIGH level.
1C4846-@to be set, which will be rcsetby the VRM pulse.
This causes
So long as the VRM pulse is within the pulse rcpetition period, IC4846 keeps
level at Pin@. When the VRM pulse goesaway outside the period, this IC changes
to HIGH level,i.e., providingan output pulse, which is appliedto the gateof IC4845
through the inverterof 1C4803.The output of IC4803and the output of the ibregoing
IC4846-@ are appiied to NAND of Ic4845. The output at PinO of IC4845 goes
to LOW levet, only when the VRM pulse is within the main gate pulse and within
the pulserepetitionpe od. Otherwise,it goesto HIGH leve1.
This signalis applied to IC4828-@throughIC482G@ and the inverterof IC48i3,
and switchesthe clock speedto the highestva1ue.

rnultiplexersin suchmanner: EachBCD codeddatais dividedjnto two blocksorderly,
starting from the most significant digit, at Pins@ through@ (A, B, C, and D).
The processeddata are sent to the segmentrccorder of IC4823. At this time, the
scanoperationfrequellcy is determinedby R4819, about 50kHz. At the sametime,
the LED digit sigral is sentto the transistorarmy of IC4830,which drivesfour LED'S.
(4) EBL lntervalTime Ntlarker
GeneratorCircuit
When pressingthe UP or DOWN pushbutton, IC4844 goes to LOW 1evelat
Pin C or @. (The UP s\ritch js 54457 and DOWNswitchis 54458.)
Resultantup or down signalfor the EBL marker with the clock at Pin@ of IC4811
for shifting the EBL positionis appliedto the input of the up ol down countercjrcuit,
which consistsof thrce stagesof hexadecimalcounters1C4817through 1C4819,by
way of the gate circuit oi IC4809.This countercircuit is presetto 0.05 nm position
al1er power-on. When prcssingthe EBL marker inclenent-decrementpushbutton
switch, the clock is appliedlo triggerihe counterto sta counting.
When the counter of IC4817 (at Pin@ reachesa count of 768 equivalentto
7.68 nm mnge, the output of 1C4804goesfrom HIGH to LOW level al Pin@. This
blocks the clock input to PinO of 1C4817to stop thc up counting. The output of
this counter is conneciedto the preset input of the counter circuit consistingof
thrce-stagehexadecimalcountersIC4825 through IC4827. It is presetby the VRM
trigger and down-countsunder the control of the 0.01nm VRIvI clock. When the
countersreachal1 counts zero, a borow pulseappearsat Pin@ of 1C482?and the
coLrntercircuit is again preset by this pulse to continue counting. Therefore, the
borow output providesa pulse rate at a constantperiod and hencels proportional
to the pulse rcpetition period and the presetvalue. The monostablemultivibrator of
IC4805 shapcsthe wavefom of the bortow output pulseinto a pulseof about0.6!sec
in width. which is sent to the video circuit on PC405asan EBL marker'At this time,

SwitchingRegulatorCircuit
The AVR output voltageis about 24V, which is held at constantlevelby changing the width of the drive pulse appliedto the ship's power mains. The swilching
frequencyis also held at 3000H2 by using a repetition frequencygeneratorcircuit.
Whenthe switch ofTR5ol is on, the powerenergyis suppliedto the load by way
of an inductor L501. Whn the switch is off, the energystored in the inductor is
suppliedto the load by way of a diodeCD502.The peakvalueof the terminalvoltage
acrossthe diode is equal to the input voltageEl. Thereforc, the output voitageE2
becomesequai to a time averagevalue of the input voltageEl. AssumingTon and
Tofl beingthe switchon and off times, the following equationis valid.
Ton
Ton + Toff
Ii Ton + Toff = T, Ton/T is smallerthan 1 .
Thereforc,if changingTon accordingto the input variatiol, the output voltageE2
canbe held at a constantlevel.

Radiator
The radiator is coveredwith the epoxy resin containingglassfiber to make its
constnrction fully water-proof. Especially, since the front side (radiatingsudace)
is the sidethroughwhich the radio wavespass, the front sideis not painted.
U,) lf smoke, salt, dust, paint, etc. are accumulatedon the radiator, the attenuation
of the power and reflection of the radio wave will occur and a drop in radar
performancewill be caused.
Checkthe radiator sometimes, and if it is dirty, wipe ofl the dusi gently with the
soft cloth soakedin water or alcohol to keep that pa clean.Don't use the
chemicalcleanerssuchasgasoline,benzinetrichlene,kctone,etc.
Whenthe glassfiber becomeswhitish and nappybecause
the radiatoris weathered
due to the long use, paint the surfaceexcept the radiatingsudace. But it is
nccessaryto apply the epoxy rcsin to the radiatingsurface. Therefore,it is advisableto requestour serviceman.
