CONDITIONING OF MIND

September 30, 2012 at 9:01pm

This a re-post of an article already available down below in this page.....It
is to remind all of you of something highly important......That is 'Conditioning
of Mind'.....a descriptive article on 'Conditioning of Mind' will follow, based
on the experience of a person who has attained 'stream-entry' level. This artic
le is merely a brief starting point for that discussion....
According to the concept of 'Conditioning of Mind' founded by Buddha, it is this
mind that gives rise to every deed....In fact, it is the environment we have cr
eated inside our mind, over the time, that finally result in these deeds. The en
vironment creates thoughts, based on these thoughts one would perform an action,
which will produce results....based on the nature of result there would be a 'f
eedback effect' on the doer of the action according to the Universal Law of Caus
e and Consequence or simply karma. This chain reaction could simply be illustrat
ed as:
Mind -> Thoughts -> Action -> Results -> Karma

based on this logic, the mind is the root cause for all the negative results we
see in the world as war, pollusion and crimes....... and positive results as veg
anism, donations, aid and enviromental protection etc.....This means that a chan
ge to the mind for better would yield better result to the world through the cha
in reaction.....
But how is this good or bad environment, which gives rise to thoughts, is create
d inside mind? This is where conditioning comes into play....conditioning simpl
y means creating an environment of a particular type through the continous train
ing of mind..... a person regularly thinking in a greedy fasion will produce a a
suitable environment in mind for greed...this mind will always give rise to tho
ughts relating to greed, which ultimately results in actions relating to greed s
uch as theft...similarly a person who continously engage in compassionate thinki
ng will produce an environment inside is mind that will allow only compassionate
thoughts, these thoughts result in actions involving kindness and sympathy such
as donations and helping etc...when the thoughts and actions of a particular pe
rson is bundled up, we call it a 'character'...a person thinking greedy and acti
ng greedy is often labelled as a 'greedy person' and similarly a person thinking
compassionately and acting compassionately will be called a 'kind and nice per
son'.... these good thoughts and actions will always yield good results...They a
re revered and looked up by the world....for example those worldly characters s
uch as Buddha, Jesus Christ, Florence Nightingale and Mother Theresa...all that
they did was due to their mind, which was free of hatred but full of compassion
and kindness....
So where to start conditioning your mind or training?
Buddhism answers this question by providing two mechanisms. Ethical Conduct (Sil
a) and Awareness/Concentration (Samadhi)....Ethical conduct is behaving in a fas
ion that benefits oneself and the world without any wrong doing...this implicitl
y creates a good environment inside the mind....for example a person engaged in
theft, butchery cannot feel compassionate....secondly...awareness/concentration,
which is achieved by meditation.....the meditation is a tool for anyone to rais
e awareness towards the mind, therefore he/she shall feel how the mind reacts to

situation and will be able handle it appropriately...more about this will follo
w shortly in subsequent articles...
Look at the picture again....see the message....well, a good starter for anyone
liking to 'condition' mind for good is the 'compassionate meditation' where one
spends just few minutes spreading kindness to all....it doesnt have to be standa
rd...just every day spend 5 minutes wishing good for your loved ones...starting
from yourself...to your parents..to siblings...to close friends...to friends and
extend it gradually to even people you dont like much...and finally to the whol
e world...make this a practice and see the results in this life time....... a mi
nd that was conitioned for good through the continous training will abide by the
last request of Buddha "Avoid all evil and engage in good deeds/thoughts for th
e wellbeing of yourself and many".......

SPEND FEW MINUTES ON MEDITATION & IT IS WORTHIER THAN EVERYTHING...BECAUSE THE R

ESULT THAT THESE FEW MINUTES PRODUCE WILL AFFECT A LIFE TIME........
