Michele Bachmann, congresswoman from Minnesota, roused the summiteers with her Friday
keynote on defending liberty. Arthur Brooks of AEI, author of The Battle, focused his warning on the
threat to free enterprise from big government. Colorado Springs columnist Michelle Malkin joked that
Michele Bachmann
the rollicking crowd at Saturday lunch was no “angry mob.” Freedom is inborn since we’re each precious
to God, proclaimed author and Hollywood actor Joseph C. Phillips. The election stakes are either a free-
dom revival or economic ruin, warned Fox News contributor Dick Morris at Sunday brunch.
SUMMIT 2011: We gathered over a thousand strong for the second annual rally in the Rockies on July
29-31, now in downtown Denver to accommodate more delegates—and to bask in national media at-
tention as four presidential hopefuls came to woo them. “Fulfilling America’s Promise” was the theme,
and highlights included:
Joseph C. Phillips
Rick Santorum, former senator from Pennsylvania, flashed with passion and principle as he made his
case on Friday for the GOP nomination against Obama. Rick Perry, governor of Texas, spelled out
the economic freedom agenda and Tenth Amendment federalism he hoped would propel him to the
White House. Former UN Ambassador John Bolton, contemplating a presidential candidacy, reviewed
the threats to America in a dangerous world. Dennis Prager of Salem Radio keynoted the Saturday
luncheon as we paid tribute to Ronald Reagan’s centenary, 1911-2011. Saturday’s Summit Banquet
was enlivened by author Mark Steyn appealing for America to reject decline. Bringing the Summit to a
climax, yet another White House hopeful, Georgia businessman Herman Cain, rocked the house—and
then swept the Denver Straw Poll. Rick Santorum
SUMMIT 2012: Two of the same thing may be a coincidence, but three make a trend. Convening on
June 29-July 1 at yet another larger venue, summiteers topped the 1,500 mark and enjoyed new fea-
tures including Citizen Action Workshops and the Right Movies. The theme was “Calling All Citizens,”
with election-year urgency in the air.
Glenn Beck, author and radio host, energized a record crowd at the opening banquet. Then Wayne
LaPierre, executive vice president of the NRA, made the case for Second Amendment rights as insepa-
rable from all our American freedoms. Two Western governors got us started on Saturday morning:
Herman Cain
Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona and Gov. Matt Mead of Wyoming. William J. Bennett, author of America:
The Last Best Hope, inspired the Saturday luncheon. Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders, the first
foreign leader to address a Western Conservative Summit, unsparingly laid out the Islamist threat to
our civilization.
Opening night sizzled with Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin and congressional candidate Mia Love of
Utah. Saturday ranged from the intellectual brilliance of social scientist Charles Murray and historian
Victor Davis Hanson to the inspirational wit of Jonah Goldberg. Political star power showed up with
Glenn Beck former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Florida Rep. Allen West, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who
drew several standing ovations and won the 2016 straw poll.
SUMMIT 2014: Beginning to be known as the CPAC of the summertime, the CPAC of the
heartland, we convened again on July 18-20 to celebrate “America at Its Best.” Evening rallies
at the glittering Bellco Theater swelled overall turnout to 3,500, some of whom even had rhythm
when the Blue Bear mascot showed up and breakdancing broke out.
Opening night featured Gov. Bobby Jindal, Sen. Mike Lee, and Dr. Ben Carson, the eventual straw
poll winner. Sarah Palin and Sen. Tim Scott electrified Saturday, with Dennis Prager, Jim DeMint,
Jan Brewer and Sen. Ted Cruz lighting up that night’s show. Allen West again capped Sunday with a rousing
call to action.
Ask the political schedulers who now approach us, not vice versa, about booking a senator
Mike Huckabee
or congressman or governor to speak. Ask C-SPAN and the other major media outlets that
cover WCS each summer.
Such is our growth in both prestige and numbers that this year we’ve fully moved into
the Colorado Convention Center, and we’ve again stretched the week to include a Young
Conservatives Leadership Conference in recent days over at CCU. So welcome to WCS15,
“Your Story: Freedom Alive.”

Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University was established in 2009 under the direction of John
Andrews, former president of the Colorado Senate.
We are a think tank, sponsoring research, events, and publications to enhance public understanding of the most
important issues facing our state and nation.
We provide an open forum where current issues are tested against the timeless principles of the American
founding.
By proclaiming Truth, we aim to foster faith, family, and freedom, to teach citizenship, and to renew the spirit
of 1776.
We analyze public policy, but we are not a lobby. We frame alternatives and advocate civic engagement, but we
do not endorse candidates or ballot issues.
We encourage competitive politics and constitutional debate, but we are not for or against any political party.
We mentor students, but we are not an academic department. We serve the God of the Bible, but we are not
exclusive in our outreach to Americans of all beliefs and viewpoints.
Centennial Institute’s work is guided by the strategic objectives of Colorado Christian University, as set forth by
President Bill Armstrong, among which are:
• To be seekers of truth and to debunk “spent ideas” and those who traffic in them.
• To impact our culture in support of traditional family values, sanctity of life, compassion for the poor, Biblical
view of human nature, limited government, personal freedom, free markets, natural law, original intent of
the Constitution and Western civilization.
• To be a magnet for outstanding students and prepare them for positions of significant leadership in the
church, business, government, and professions by offering an excellent education in strategic disciplines.
Centennial Institute is funded by designated contributions from friends, not from CCU general revenues or tuitions.
