Bioclimatic Structures

The term, bioclimatic refers to the relationship between climate and

architecture which comes from the word bioclimatology, the study of the
effects of climatic conditions on the living organism.
Bioclimatic Architecture is the scheme of buildings and spaces
constructed on the scientific assessment of the local climate, meant in
providing thermal and visual comfort to the users and making use of the
natural sources. The basic elements of bioclimatic design are passive solar
and cooling systems which are incorporated onto building. Passive systems
function without mechanical parts or additional power supply and naturally
warm and cool buildings.
There are three categories given:
o Passive solar heating systems
o Passive natural cooling techniques
o Systems and day lighting techniques
It is one of the part of architecture that is dominated by the principles
of ecology and sustainability. Bioclimatic design is a term which implies
design that aims to guard our environment and natural resources. Bioclimatic
architectures goal is to form buildings and urban.
Bioclimatic architecture includes the following principles:
o Building can be secured by heat using appropriate systems which are
used to the external envelope of the building, particularly by suitable
insulation and air tightness of the openings of the structure.
o Heating buildings using solar energy during cold season. This can be
done by proper orientation of the buildings.
o By using proper shading and also by the correct treatment of the
building envelope, it could be protected from the excess heat.
o The improvement of environmental condition in the interiors of
buildings so that residents find them calm and comfortable.
o Guaranteeing the combined insolation with solar control for daylight, in
order to provide sufficient and equally distributed light.
o Removal of the heat that accumulates in summer in the building to the
surrounding environment using natural means or passive cooling and
techniques, like natural ventilation, typically during night time.

Saving energys first important way is to use less of it and cut demand
and supply power in a non threatening manner. It is at this stage that the
brief can be questioned with regard to power requirements. But through
bioclimatic, its method does not focus much on these active systems rather
on the passive ways through its built form and orientation of the building
that can offer the optimum design to reduce energy use. With the use of
these approaches, the designer can then on move to the mixed mode
approach of the building wherein selected active systems are used inside the
building for energy efficiency. These active systems are needed for the
building in order to provide to the days wherein the climate is unsuitable to
the thermal comfort of humans.
