From One Kitchen To Another

Bruno Huber, a Langham alumni and a Kaslo resident
in the 70s and 80s and a film technician/electrician
decided one day to venture into the restaurant business.
In 2010 he became a partner in a French restaurant in
Vancouvers West End. Anna Kallstrm, a childrens educator also from Kaslo, decided to trade her career from
working with children to slinging pots and pans, riding
horses, and working with cowboys in the northern bush.
Both career changes proved to be fascinating, wonderful, tough, and definitely something to remember. Neither
one of them ever regretted their decisions.
Folly Bistro is the story of the turmoils, fights, challenges, hopes and ambitions of two years in the life of a
French Bistro. The book is humorous, outrageous and yes,
its all true, more or less. Its mandatory reading for anyone
even dreaming of getting in or out of the restaurant business. Bruno now lives in Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast,
Kaslo by the sea, as he describes it.
Have Pots, Will Travel takes the reader into the Canadian north where Anna rode horses, wrestled with wranglers and guides and cooked up some mean moose ribs.
Later she worked in mining exploration camps where she
traded the horses for helicopters and guides for drillers.
Anna resides in the Kaslo during the during the summer,
and in the Caribbean during the winter.
Bruno and Anna will be reading from their books and
talking about their experiences at the Langham Cutural
Centre in Kaslo on Friday, July 3.

The Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice

announced the launch of a new tool to support people
dealing with chronic pain, and they are inviting public
input to further develop the tool.
According to Canada-wide statistics, more than one in
51 Kootenay Boundary residents suffer from the disease.
Dr. Joel Kailia, a GP in Nelson specializing in chronic
pain management and member of the Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice said, Chronic pain has
a profoundly negative impact on peoples lives, including
physical, emotional and psychological trauma. It results
in reduced quality of life for patients as well as their relatives and friends supporting them.

The disease also has a huge impact financially on the

health care system as well as business productivity in
our region. The annual cost of chronic pain to the health
care system in Canada is estimated to be as high as $62
billion, more than cancer, AIDS and heart disease combined. Chronic Pain is a condition that typically affects
patients for longer than five years and while often caused
by injury, arthritis or spinal disk abnormalities, in many
cases, unfortunately, the cause is unknown.
What we do know is that while treatments like medication, injections and surgery are useful tools for managing pain, the best approach to dealing with pain is
multi-disciplinary, added Dr. Kailia.
To help address this issue, doctors in the Kootenay
Boundary have developed the Chronic Pain Tool, a document that aims to promote a multi-disciplinary approach
to managing the disease, and provides a list of practitioners, services and resources patients can access in the
area. With a range of methods including medical treatments, body work, cognitive therapies, self management
and education, doctors aim to build a resource that supports the needs of this patient population.
Dr. Kailia added, Weve made a great start and now
were asking for input from other practitioners, community groups and the public. If you have or know someone dealing with this disease, we want to hear about any
resources that will expand and improve our initial list.

PROTECTS YOU
You might have heard about solicitorclient privilege. It means that what you tell
your lawyer must be held in the strictest
confidence. Your lawyer cant talk about
your case to anyone not even your family
unless you give permission. This privilege
covers all communications within the
lawyer-client relationship and comes into
existence the moment you consult a lawyer
for legal advice.
In criminal law cases, this means that what
an accused person tells their lawyer will be
kept secret. In also applies to other areas
of law, including family law, civil lawsuits,
wills and estates, contracts, taxation and
corporate law.
For example, in one case, Mr. M, a teacher/
librarian criminally charged with sexual
offences against former students, wanted to
see the file of a lawyer who represented C (a
former student) in a civil lawsuit against him
for alleged sexual touching. Mr. M wanted
the civil file revealed to help his criminal
case his defence was that C was fabricating
the criminal complaint to bolster the civil
lawsuit.
The Supreme Court of Canada denied this
request because it would have violated Cs
solicitor-client privilege.
This privilege is fundamental to the
justice system in Canada, said the Court.
The integrity of the administration of
justice depends upon the unique role of the
solicitor who provides legal advice to clients
within this complex system. [P]eople
must be able to speak candidly with their
lawyer and so enable their interests to be
fully represented.
There are other types of privilege, for

example, for doctor-patient communications
and confessions to a priest or minister. But
the law doesnt give these types of privilege
the same level of protection it gives to
solicitor-client privilege.
In rare circumstances, the court will set
aside the privilege. If theres a clear and
imminent risk of serious harm to other
persons, a lawyer (or an expert hired by the
lawyer) can reveal what they know as needed
to protect them.
Take the case of a client referred by his
lawyer to a psychiatrist for an expert report.
The client confided plans to torture and kill
young female prostitutes to the psychiatrist.
The Supreme Court of Canada decided
that the interests of public safety justified
the psychiatrist disclosing the otherwise
privileged statement to authorities.
What happens if your former lawyer
moves to another firm, and a lawyer in that
firm acts for the other side in a new matter
youre involved in? In many cases, the other
lawyer would have to disqualify themselves.
Most recently, the Supreme Court of
Canada tossed out certain rules for lawyers
the federal government had put in place.
These rules would, for example, have allowed
searches of lawyers offices, without warrant,
on grounds of sussing out suspected money
laundering or terrorist financing. The
Court said the rules were too broad and
unjustifiably infringed the fundamental
principle of solicitor-client privilege.
Rest assured, you can be frank with your
lawyer, who will do their utmost to represent
your interests fully.

Water Restrictions
Did you know that lawns require only 3 cm of water, equal to
about an hour of sprinkling, per week?
The City of Nelson would like to remind residents to restrict their watering use, as follows:
Water every other day only. Premises with
even numbered civic addresses may sprinkle
on even numbered days of the month (ie:
2nd, 4th, 6th etc) and premises with odd
numbered civic addresses may sprinkle on
odd numbered days of the month (ie: 1st,
3rd, 5th etc).
Water in the early morning, before 10:00 am,
or early evening, after 6:00 pm.
Premises with underground sprinklers should
have the system checked for leaks and the timer set to only give the lawn about one hour
worth of water each week.
Ensure that water does not over-spray onto
sidewalks, driveways or roads.

Kaslo Thrift Store is having an Open House, June 20, 11

am to 4 pm, to celebrate its new, bright look. This past winter
many volunteers have worked hard to improve the store. Its
cleaner, more spacious and still the best value in town.
Do you know where the money made at the store goes?
The Victorian Hospital of Kaslo Auxiliary Society runs
the store, and channels the profits back into our community. Donations have been made, amongst others, to the
Food Bank, The Breakfast Club at JV Humphries School,
the North Kootenay Lake Hospice Society, and an annual
bursary is awarded to a local student. Essential equipment
requested over the years by the Interior Health Authority
has been paid for by the VHKAS, and continuous support, financial and hands-on, is given to our Long Term
Care Centre.
The VHKAS sponsors the Kaslo Community Garden, and
it is always open to funding requests that meet its mission to
support the lifelong health and well-being of our community.
How does the VHKAS do all these things? A small
group of generous volunteers work at the Thrift Store, but
that group is getting smaller. More people would mean
the store could open more days, and the work load would
be shared. Why not consider joining the group? Meet
people, have a few laughs, and help your community.

The Langham Cultural Society is hosting a 2015 Benefit Dance Your Feet Off Dance at the Kaslo Legion on
Saturday, July 4, celebrating the Langhams 41st year as a
cultural centre!
Get ready to boogie the night away with some of Kaslo
and the Kootenays favourite musicians. The band, Clint
Swanson and Friends, will feature the amazing Pauline
Lamb on vocals, our own Tom Thomson on keyboard,
Clint Swanson on sax, Jesse Lee on bass and Marvin

East Shore Summer School Offerings

The East Shore of Kootenay Lake will be alive with educational opportunities to stimulate the senses this summer with three amazing weeks of classes for the whole
family.
In partnership with Selkirk College, the East Shore
Summer School will be running four camps out of the
beautiful Crawford Bay School starting July 21 where participants can learn, play, paint and share with a variety of
great teachers and artists.
The East Shore of Kootenay Lake is a spectacular setting and in the summertime we have many part-time
residents and visitors, says Laverne Booth, the Selkirk
College Community Education & Workplace Training
(CEWT) Program coordinator based out of Crawford
Bay. Grandparents, children, families and individuals
will find a place to get inspired in the three week art and
language programs we are offering this summer.
The camps get underway on July 21 with the four-day
Shokunin camp. These master classes for adults provide
the opportunity to be mentored by the

spontaneous
art; historical
writing; popular
theatre;
wildlife

nature photography; music
and
sound;
and visionary
painting.
Bringing a
family feel to
the week will

runs simultaneously. Kids between the ages of six and 12
will have the chance to take part in a variety of activities
with art educator Rielle Oswald.
The week of July 27 to 31 switches gears to the Medley
Arts Camp which is an opportunity for families to explore
a number of options together or select individual pursuits.
Courses include harmonic voice, childrens choir and theatrics; dance fusion, hip hop jazz, party dance; samba
band and ukulele; guitar basic and adult basics; landscape
painting; art stations and youth art; marimbas and ukulele
intro; visionary art; and Kindermusik.
The final offering on the East Shore takes place between
August 3 and 7 when the Global Gesture Language Camp
takes over the Crawford Bay School and community.
Open to all ages, small family groupings will take part in
language immersion in French, German or Spanish with
a range of activities such as cooking, community explorations and signing in world sign language.

One Giant Leap

For Kaslos Unity Bridge
There were a few tense moments for the Kaslo Trailblazers, but the unloading of the bridge on March 21 ended
with a high five when Glen Settle of Settle Holdings slung
the two 59 foot sections to a safe landing on the south
bank of the Kaslo River.
Two concrete bridge abutments and protective riprap
had already been constructed by Tom Duchastel and
Chris Temple, with great assistance from the Village of
Kaslo crew. Meanwhile, Val Koenig and his faithful band
of stainers had painted three coats of magenta (beetroot)
on the wooden superstructure. Next comes the dry land
carpentry to build the treads, the railings, and the posts.
The culmination will be on June 25 when a crane lowers
the 118 foot steel ribs across the water at the end of Fifth
Street and the final assembly begins.
