Target Populations
Project SUCCESS is offered free to 1st - 6th grade elementary students who attend the 9
schools included in our ASES grant. Project SUCCESS offers homework support of
rigorous academics, as well as engaging recreational and enrichment programs
designed to provide support for at-risk youth. Students who are academically underperforming based on testing data are offered priority; however, all students who need
daily after-school care are encouraged to participate in the program. Teachers,
counselors, parents, and administrators are encouraged to recommend students to
Project SUCCESS throughout the year.

Program Plan
I. Program Goals and Requirements
The District assesses the needs of the community through various methods, which
include state and local assessment data (CST, API scores, AYP, District Benchmark
assessments, and the Consolidated Application for Free/Reduced-Lunch data).
Information is also gathered from several sources to provide on-going program
improvement, including:
Survey results from parents/guardians, students, principals, teachers, and
afterschool staff
Regular collaborative meetings with community partners, community liaisons,
and site principals
Program TOSA and administrator observations
Based on the data provided by sources mentioned above, the following are the goals
for the after-school program to address:
Provide a safe environment for students after-school that encourages them to
make healthy choices
Provide enrichment opportunities that widen students scope of experiences
Increase students proficiency in Language Arts and Math
Increase proficiency in English for English language learners
Provide homework support for students
Ensure continuing program effectiveness and improve quality through
periodic evaluations and regular discussions with stakeholders regarding
program design
Enrollment in PROJECT SUCCESS is on a first-come first-serve basis, with priority
given to students who are under-performing academically. Demand for after-school
program services is extremely high in a majority of our schools. Most sites maintain
waiting lists for the entire year. Some steps taken to inform parents and recruit
students are:
Informational presentations at PTA/ELAC meetings
Information tables during Back-to-School Nights, Open House
Registration drive every Spring
Automated call-outs are employed on a site-by-site basis to inform
parents of upcoming events and registration for PROJECT SUCCESS.
The Districts community facilitators are also instrumental in providing
parents with current information on the program, and in providing
assistance for parents who would like their students enrolled in Project
SUCCESS.
Daytime teachers are encouraged to refer students during parent
conferences, Student Study Teams, and academic meetings between
teachers and administrators when data is reviewed and
recommendations for support are made.

Brochures and applications are also readily available at the schools

and district office.

The most effective way to retain students is to provide quality after-school care that
meets their needs in a safe, nurturing environment. To this end, PROJECT
SUCCESS leaders work tirelessly to offer engaging activities, valuable enrichment,
and opportunities to involve students and parents in their schools and communities.
The TOSA and administrators outreach to community and statewide partners to
provide students with recreation, drama, music, fine arts, and science classes, as
well as offering professional development for the after-school instructional aides on
creating ideal learning environments.
Another means of retaining students is in clearly communicating program
expectations on a regular basis to both parents and students. A Parent/Student
Contract and Agreements is given to parents at the beginning of recruitment for the
upcoming year. This includes an explanation of the attendance guidelines, early
release and late arrival policies in the form of a contract that parents and students
are required to initial, sign and return. An emergency card is completed at the
beginning of the program period which denotes all authorized persons who are able
to pick up their children.
A Homework FAQ is also distributed at the beginning of the program that clarifies
the homework policy.
The contract and emergency card must be completed in full, signed, and returned as
the student begins the program. All written correspondence is translated, and
bilingual staffers are present at school and district informational meetings regarding
the after-school program (i.e. registration drives, PTA meetings, information booths,
etc.).
9 of the 9 schools participating in Project SUCCESS are designated Program
Improvement as of 2013. All of the schools have significant populations of socioeconomically disadvantaged students and English Language Learners. After-school
students are also designated in Aeries, the district-wide student database system,
where further information can be obtained regarding students attendance and
truancy rates. Varied sources of information can provide a detailed picture of a
subgroups progress towards academic proficiency and lead to possible strategies
designed to boost their academic performance.
II. Program Content/Quality
There are four basic components to the Project SUCCESS program:
Academic support
Arts & Enrichment
Recreation
Nutrition

Academic Support:
PROJECT SUCCESS leaders work closely with school administrators and
daytime teachers to support the schools curriculum, instruction, and learning
goals with those of the after-school program.
Each site uses a variety of Language Arts enrichment resources, including Lexia,
Accelerated Reader and intervention materials provided by KidzLit. These
materials align with the language arts program during the regular day, and
reinforce the lessons being taught by the daytime teachers.
Daily use of SWUN Math Beyond the Basic Facts supports and reinforces the
daytime instruction of mathematics within the SWUN Math program which is a
district adoption. Online lesson support is available as well as grade level
manuals that IAs can access.
Computer labs at each site are accessed by students daily for skill building in
Typing Club, a district wide initiative that builds keyboarding skills, a necessity in
Common Core Assessments.
At most sites, daytime teachers provide homework packets for after-school staff
to utilize when helping students with their homework.
The Lead Instructional Aides consult district T. A.s and guides to support
curriculum and training for staff.
The Director and TOSA also meet regularly and work closely with the principals
at each site to maintain communications and ensure seamless transitions
between regular day and after-school activities.
In addition to everyday verbal communication, there is email used by after-school
staff, office administrators, and daytime teachers to communicate with each
other. The after school staff and the daytime staff frequently exchange emails
regarding concerns/progress of the students.
Arts & Enrichment:
PROJECT SUCCESS collaboration with school, and community organizations
have led to an wealth of quality opportunities and creation of an enriching and
engaging afterschool environment.
Academic Chess offers chess workshops for students grades 1-3.
South Coast Repertorys Neighborhood Conservatory instructors teach drama
classes to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders at several school sites.

juSTEAMagine sessions provide a grade-level appropriate exploration into topics

and projects based in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math)
OC Fine Arts work with students in directed art instruction focusing this year on
creating cartoon-like figures from basic shapes incorporating instruction in
perspective, shading and coloring.
ExplorOcean brings engaging hands-on opportunities to increase students
knowledge in ocean literacy and innovation. Hands on labs provide experiences
and resources to design, build, create and test their own creations.
SCRATCH code writing instruction is provided for students using the PROJECT
SUCCESS 20 chrome books. Students write their own code and create their
own presentations.
Master Mindz lets students experience adventure-based, multi-sensory
challenges and activities that teach communication, problem solving as
individuals and as part of a group, goal setting, planning and execution while
reinforcing metacognitive skills through group debriefing at the end of each
session.
Girls, Inc. meets with girls in grades 1-3 at four sites twice a week for the entire
year offering a rich and varied curriculum that includes literacy lessons and
activities centered on self-esteem & leadership, mentoring, self-defense,
economic literacy, and media literacy. They also provide one-on-one tutoring with
for some students in addition to their time in the group.
National League of Young Men prepare and distribute 300 fully stocked pencil
boxes to students at a variety of sites. They are delivered with a special visit that
includes a snack and activities they do with students.
UCI Education 180 students have volunteered over 480 hours of volunteer
assistance with classes, working as an extra set of hands supporting our
students in the afterschool classroom.
At some site, school based music programs have also bolstered students
appreciation for the arts; there are after-school Band programs taught by
certificated teachers currently running in several Project SUCCESS schools.

Certificated teachers have trained instructional aides to utilize the technology

labs with specific instruction in specific programs like Lexia and Typing Club so
students can access much of the same computer activities and websites
available in their daytime classes.

A partnership between Project SUCCESS, the OC STEM Initiative was initiated

in 2013-2014 with the goal of bringing training and STEM based learning projects
to each site for the 2014-2015 school year. The curriculum also emphasizes
hands-on, real-world, problem based learning in the areas of Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Students are also encouraged to participate in science clubs after school when
they enter junior high and high school, with the goal of choosing majors in
science-related fields once they enter higher education.
In the past we have also accessed The Environmental Nature Center docents
that visit the sites and bring hands on lessons to the students. Visits to the ENC
provide students with an outdoor classroom to further their inquiry. Rogers
Gardens had provided supplies for on-site projects.
Recreation
Students receive a session each day of physical education activities and skills for
which IAs have been trained in by district P.E. coaches. Training included a
variety of recreational choices and the use of related resources. In the past
PROJECT SUCCESS has partnered with After-School Hoops, The Orange
County Marathon Foundation and worked together for the Foundations Kids Run
the O.C. program. PROJECT SUCCESS has partnered with several agencies to
provide recreational activities.
Nutrition
Project SUCCESS has worked closely with Nutrition Services to plan an
appetizing and well received daily snack menu for students. Different groups of
students were able to taste test and vote on their favorites that fell within the
state nutritional guidelines. The operations manager for the district Nutrition
Services has also provide Master Chef classes at each site and brought an extra
fun cooking lesson with a nutritional snack for students providing them with all
the supplies needed.
