Picking the college world series

Every June right in the middle of the
Major League baseball season there is a
stretch of time where the College World
Series takes place. Usually, I am following the MLB season and most of the time
catch a few CWS games. This season,
I watched more college baseball, partly
because we have cable this spring, than I
have in many years.
With that said, I think that I have a better
than average idea of what has gone on
FROM THE
this season and who are best teams. This
CHEAP SEATS
year the following teams advanced out of
the Super Regional to the College World
Ryan
Series this week and into next in Omaha,
Stonebraker
Nebraska: #1 LSU; #2 Florida; #4 TCU;
#7. Vanderbilt; #8. Miami (FL); #11. ArSports Editor
kansas; #13 Cal-State Fullerton; and #14
Virginia.
The above numbers associated with the teams, are the June 2,
2015 rankings by by National College Baseball Writers Association. There are many rankings out there, I chose the media/
writer poll.
So, I thought it would be fun to ask some of the summer baseball
coaches to make their picks. I also decided that it would not be
fair to them to ask them to make picks if I didnt offer picks myself, so here are our picks.
If Vanderbilt wins the title, we all will look like experts.

WEST LIBERTY Tipton was able
to dodge the rain that moved in late
last week, but were not able to dodge
the 11th ranked team in class 3A,
West Liberty. There, the Tigers lost
twice 12-2 in five innings and 13-4.
The games were nearly not held as
rainy, tropical conditions overtook
Eastern Iowa last week. All Thursday games were postponed and
many Friday games were as well.
At the start of the Tigers-Comets
doubleheader, there was a light mist
that disappated as the first game
went on.
The Tigers fell to 0-15 overall and
0-6 in the River Valley Conference
South division. Tipton hosts NE
Goose Lake Thursday and plays at
the Bellevue tournament this Saturday in Bellevue.
Tipton started well in both softball
games, scoring each of the first runs
for both games.
In game one, Tipton broke a scoreless tie with a two-run, top of the
third. The Tigers got two runners
on and Caitlin Himes came through
with a two-out single scoring both
Alyssa Crock and Maggie Bormann
for a 2-0 Tipton lead.
In the bottom of the first, the Tigers
got out of a bases loaded, one-out

jam in an ESPN like web gem.

A fly ball to rightfielder Mara Jauron for the second out turned into
much more. The Comets tried to
tag-up to score their runner on third
base. Jauron fired the ball home

where catcher Corine Fonteyne was

waiting with the plate blocked. Fonteyne snagged the throw and tagged
the runner in one motion, not
allowing the runner to score, thus
completing an improbable double

play to end the first inning threat.
