Note
The manufacturer has claimed that barriers have been included, which prevents longitudinal water
penetration in the region of the metallic layers.
Procedure
The cable sample was prepared in accordance with the procedure as mentioned in clause F.1 of
IEC 60502-2. Following this, the tube was filled within 5 minutes with water up to a height of the water
in the tube of 1 m above the cable centre. After 24 hours the first heating cycle was started. For the
procedure of the heating cycles reference is made to clause F.2 of IEC 60502-2.
Requirement
No water shall emerge from the ends of the cable sample.

The requirement of the work was to determine the performance of various cables when it is subjected to
selected clauses from BS 7846:2009 [1].

The client for this work was BASEC, Milton Keynes, UK. The clients Work Instruction was E4TTP723.

2 cables were submitted for test:

Sample 1 - CU/MICA/XLPE/SWA/LS0H 2x2.5mm2


15.2mm diameter, 2 core cable comprising 2 off 2.5mm2 insulated stranded copper conductors with mica
glass tape, bedding, steel wire armour and a black over sheath. The over sheath had the following
embossed marking;

72.0mm diameter, 4 core cable comprising 4 off 300mm2 insulated stranded copper conductors with mica
glass tape, central filler, bedding, steel wire armour and a black over sheath. The over sheath had 2 lines
of the following embossed markings;

The cables were manufactured by Bahra Cables, P.O. Box 5989, Jeddah 21432, Saudi Arabia.

The test specimens were supplied by the client and received on 21 July 2011.

BRE Global was not involved in the sample selection process and therefore cannot comment upon the
relationship between samples supplied for test and the product supplied to market.

1) Introduction
This report relates to tests conducted on four samples of Electric cable submitted by
Bahra Cables Company, Saudi Arabia.
This report applies only to the particular samples tested and to the specific tests carried out and
detailed within the report. It does not indicate any measure of Approval, Certification,
Supervision, Control or Surveillance by BSI of this or any related products.

2) Samples
The client submitted four samples of Electric cable described as follows:1)

1 x 2.5mm Yellow insulation


1 x 4.0mm2 Green/Yellow insulation
1 x 1.5mm2 Black insulation
1 x 6.0mm2 Blue insulation

3) Testing
The samples submitted were subjected to the tests specified in BS 6004:2000 &
IEC 60227-3:1993, modified for higher temperature materials used at the clients request. The
requirements were taken from those specified in BS 6004:2000 & IEC 60227-3:1993
Excluding BS 6004:2000 clause 7.5 which is conducted as part of the manufacturing process.

The results of the tests carried out are detailed in the following report
