Part of the FAB 40 Super Steel makes industry list for third consecutive year
Behind a recent national honor for Super Steel is the
work that made that honor possible.
The Milwaukee-based company, located at 7900 W.
Tower Ave , was listed at number 8 on the Fabricator FAB 40
list. It is the third year in a row the company has made the
list.
Heather Krugler, a spokesperson for the company, said
the honor "validates the work we do each day. Beyond our
own sales and marketing efforts, Super Steel has gained the
attention of others who view and rate the best companies in
our industry. One of Super Steels goals is certainly to
remain on the 'Fab 40' list, as well as to increase our ranking on the list."
Krugler noted that the FAB 40 honor is just one of several recent recognitions the company has received. Super
Steel has also been selected for the Business Times "Best in
Business" honor. Other recognitions included being listed on
the "Wisconsin 75," the Metropolitan Milwaukee
Association of Commerce-COSBE "Future 50, " and Inc.
Magazines 500/5,000.
Super Steel was named the Granville-Brown Deer
Manufacturer of the Year in 2013, was nominated in 2014
for Wisconsin Family Business of the Year and was also a
nominee for Wisconsin Manufacturer of the Year.
Super Steel works with clients seeking large metal fabrications, with painting and probable complex electrical,
hydraulic and mechanical assembly. According to information from the company, the clients require manufacturing
firepower and expertise to meet consistent deadlines.
Super Steel provides complex components and-or complete

assemblies, up-to-and-including whole goods.

Super Steel provides a "one-stop shop" for customers, including design-for-manufacturability
input, new product introduction expertise, metal
cutting, press brake work up to 600-tons, machining, turret punching, robotic and manual welding,
painting (electro-deposition, liquid and powder),
and complex assembly (electrical, mechanical
and hydraulic.) Super Steel is a turnkey, consultative, full service provider for metal fabrications.
Super Steel does provide items to the international market. The company is EN15085 certified
for rail welding; and some of its products are sent
to Europe. Super Steel has also assisted Canadian
firms.
Super Steel is 93 years old. According to information from the company, President Dirk Smith
joined Super Steel in 2010 with the goal of
improving internal processes, people and plant
capabilities.
"This has resulted in sustainable growth within
a very competitive market. Dirk has built a Can- The Super Steel logo is pictured outside the companys operaDo team, which results in better solutions for tions on Tower Road. Super Steel recently made the FAB 40

Falls board rejects rezoning request

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
The Menomonee Falls Village Board
rejected a rezoning request June 15 for
land in the northwest portion of the village.
J. Bradley Bence requested the property be rezoned from the A-1 Agricultural
District to the CDD Conservation
Development District.
A protest petition was filed by adjacent
residents against the rezoning request. In
response, the item was tabled at the June 4
meeting. The petition has since been verified by village staff. As a result, the rezoning request had to be approved by five of
six members of the Village Board.
At the start of discussion, Village
President Joe Helm said that to get up to

speed on the ordinance he attended a

workshop on conservation development districts that was presented by Waukesha
County and the UW Extension. Helm said
he couldnt get over a log row photo that
was presented by a resident at a previous
meeting and then visited the property on
June 14.
Helm the quoted sections of the ordinance which stated the intent of the ordinance is to preserve natural areas and
woodlands, reduce the intensity of the
development, minimize the views of new
development from existing streets, and preserve landscape elements and natural features such as woodlands. He also noted the
applicant has to create an existing resource
site analysis map showing the location of
every tree larger than 12 inches in caliper.

Helm, reading from the ordinance, said it

requires that the development should be
designed around those features.
Helm stated that the bullet points in the
ordinance has been neutered by his activity on the property. This land doesnt qualify
for this anymore.
Trustee Steve Raymonds said he was
torn on the proposal because he liked the
idea of a conservation development district.
I dont like the fact that any neighbor
can tell some other neighbor that they cant
do something to their land, and we have
that here, Raymonds said.
He also noted that residents opposing
the request resided in subdivisions that were
developed near the site.
Raymonds said he visited the area and
was surprised at how open the area is with

all the trees that were cut down.

Trustee Bonnie Lemmer also said she
was torn on the issue, and that property
owner should be allowed to develop their
land. Lemmer said she could also understand the opinion of nearby residents that a
property should be allowed to remain as is.
When you move out into the country
and Ive done it twice you have to be willing to accept development around your
house, Lemmer said.
The board rejected the rezoning
request. Under village ordinances, a rezoning request that is recommended for
approval by the Plan Commission but is
rejected by the Village Board is then sent
back to the Plan Commission for further discussion before it is returned to the Village
Board for final action.

Village Board approves outdoor dining on sidewalks in Village Centre

The Menomonee Falls Village Board
supported an ordinance June 15 that
would allow for outdoor dining on public

sidewalks in the Village Centre.

Under the ordinance, outdoor cafes
would be allowed on public sidewalks

within the Village Centre from Roosevelt

Drive south to Main Street and continuing
on the east side of Appleton Avenue to a
point 270 feet south of Jacobson Drive
and on to Main Street from the a point
160 feet of Water Street west to Hoyt
Drive. The permit would be in place from
March 1 to Nov. 1 and outdoor dining
would be allowed from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
All applicants would be required to amend
their liquor license boundaries to include
the outdoor cafe area and molded plastic
furniture is barred.
During board discussion, Trustee Steve
Raymonds said he liked language in a similar ordinance from Cudahy that barred
fold-able metal and plastic lawn chairs and
card tables from the cafe areas.
I really dont want to see card tables,
Raymonds said.
Trustee Chris Smolik cited the portion of
the ordinance which barred molded plastic
furniture from the cafe areas.
Village Manager Mark Fitzgerald said
the village based its ordinance from a similar ordinance in Oconomowoc. Fitzgerald
said a card table and lounge chair wouldnt meet the weather and wear provision
of the village ordinance.

Special meeting scheduled

A special Village Board meeting has
been scheduled for 6 p.m. June 24 to hear
presentation from the four residents who
have filed to fill a vacancy on the board.
A vacancy opened up after Helm was
elected Village President in April.
Fitzgerald suggested the board take 15
minutes to interview each applicant and
then discuss how to fill the vacancy.
Fitzgerald added that the interview will
be held in open session but suggested that
candidates be outside the room while a
specific candidate was being interviewed
by the board.
Parking on road restricted
The board approved barring parking
on the north side of Kohler Lane. Trustee
Jeremy Walz said parking is currently
barred on the south side of the road while
parking is not allowed in some sections of
the north side of the road. Walz said the
village received a complaint from a business about not motorists not being able to
see oncoming traffic when they leave that
business due to parked vehicles.

Against the odds: Falls girls soccer upsets Homestead to qualify for state
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
The Menomonee Falls girls soccer
team topped Homestead 2-1 in overtime in
a sectional final at Brookfield Central June
13. In the process, the team continued a
postseason run that has taken the Indians
from fifth place in the Greater Metro
Conference to state tournament qualifier.
"In the regular season, we were a little
off but we came into the tournament saying we were going to change it and we're
going to come back. We called it our
'path of revenge,'" forward Kylie Sprecher
said. "We just wanted to keep going as
far as we can."
The postseason run included wins over
Homestead and Hamilton, both of whom
defeated Menomonee Falls during the regular season.
"It's just amazing, it's so surreal,"
added Maggie Greifenkamp. "We couldn't ask for anything more."
The day was all the more special for
Greifenkamp and the six other seniors on
the team, who graduated from
Menomonee Falls during a ceremony
which started at 4 p.m. and was finishing
up at just before 6 p.m. The seniors on the
team left the ceremony toward the end to
get to the game, which was pushed back
two hours from its original 5 p.m. start.
Menomonee Falls got on the board
first as Sprecher converted an assist from
Maggie Greifenkamp inside the
Highlanders penalty box to give

Menomonee Falls a 1-0 lead at the 42nd

minute. With that goal, Sprecher set the
record for most goals in a season which
had been set the year before by Rachel
Clayton.
During the second half, Menomonee
Falls continued to press, as Sprecher made
several runs, with Menomonee Falls getting two shots on goal near the 79th
minute.
While Menomonee Falls attempted to
keep the ball out of their side of the field in
the closing minutes of the game,
Homestead pressed and Jordan Ellerbrock
converted an assist from Coco Wiencek
with less than two minutes remaining.
But Menomonee Falls scored less than
a minute into the first overtime, as
Sprecher sprinted toward the Homestead
goal. The ensuing shot deflected off another Menomonee Falls player before it was
deflected into the net by a Homestead
defender.
Menomonee Falls then held the lead
for the next 19 minutes to earn its first trip
to the state tournament.
For Menomonee Falls Coach Scott
Stein, it is the second improbable postseason run in less than a year, as Stein
coached the boys team to a runner-up finish in the state tournament in the fall. This
year's girls team had only three players
playing in the same position as last year.
"I think this year the connection and
bond between the guys and girls programs they believe," Stein said. "They're
all great friends and juniors and seniors,

Kylie Sprecher of Menomonee Falls (12) eludes a Homestead defender during a

sectional semifinal July 13. Photo by Thomas J. McKillen.
they want it for each other."
Stein said he took the seniors on the
girls team aside and mentioned that
expectations for the boys team weren't
high either heading into their season.
"Why can't we do it, and they did,"

Stein said.
Menomonee Falls is scheduled to play
D.C. Everest, the top ranked team in the
state, at 7 p.m. June 19 at the Uihlein
Soccer Park in Milwaukee.
