I.

Participant eligibility
a. Eligible to join the Engineering Innovations Challenge 2015 are teams of one to three
bona fide University of the Philippines-Diliman students, either from undergraduate or
graduate level;
b. At least one of the team members must be an undergraduate or graduate student from
the UP College of Engineering;
c. If entering as a team of one, the participant must be an undergraduate or graduate
student from the UP College of Engineering;
d. Each participant may be a member of only one team;
e. Members of the University of the Philippines-Diliman administration, faculty, and staff
are restricted from participation.
f. A team is officially a competitor in the Engineering Innovations Challenge 2015 upon preregistration.

II.

Lecture Series
a. Lectures will be held by seasoned professionals to develop a foundation and context of
solution-building by discussing the topics brief history leading onto the current situation,
engineering solutions and related projects. Timeline follows:

b. Attendance to seminars by participant teams is not compulsory.


c. The registration of at least one participant per team before 4:15 PM on the day of the
seminar grants the team 1% additional to their total score. The 1% merit can be earned
per team per seminar, totalling 3% bonus for attendance in all three seminars.

III.

Proposal submission
a. Teams will create solution proposals in relation to the discussed topics. The best solution
proposals offer compelling descriptions of:
i. what the problem is, including its background and affected audience;
ii. the solution to be delivered in order to solve or ease the problem and how it is
expected to do so;
iii. how the solution will be implemented, depicting its feasibility and validity with
simple cost outlines;
iv. the solutions expected effects, relating to a timeline, and;
v. the superiority of the offered solution over existing methods.
b. Entry requirements
i. Each proposal must be an original analysis and must be the work of the author/s.
ii. The proposal must adhere to the preparation requirements that follow:
Length: Proposal should be no longer than five (5) pages including all
charts/graphs, references, and any appendices. If a submission exceeds
this limitation, only its first five (5) pages will be evaluated.
Appearance and Format: Proposal should follow styling indicated by
MSW A4 (http://www.academia.edu/5129722/MSW_A4_format), saved
in Portable Document Format (PDF).
iii. Each proposal must be submitted under one track, each being the titular
categorization of topics from the lecture series:

c. Each team may submit only one proposal

with the subject Engineering Innovations Challenge Submission. The PDF of the
proposal must be attached to the email. The email body must indicate the track to be
submitted under, and the names and student numbers of the member/s of the team, as
in the following example:

e. Proposals will be graded by panellists consisting of members of UP Enterprise, the Dean
of the UP College of Engineering, and seasoned experts in the respective tracks. Each
panellist will grade each proposal by the following set of rubrics:
Relevance
Feasibility
Technical and scientific validity
Cost efficiency
Technical writing

The top fifteen (15) proposals with the highest average grades will advance the authoring
teams to presentation and pitching on April 25, 2015. The proposals to advance are
regardless of track entered under.

Presentation and Pitching


a. Order of presentations and timetable will be announced before April 20, 2015.
b. All teams are required to pass their presentation on or before April 23, 2015, either
through email to enggicon2015@gmail.com or to the Engineering Student Council Office
at Melchor Hall MH123.
c. Presentations will strictly follow the allotted time per team.
d. All members should be present, unless a member has a valid excuse for absence.
Absence during presentation must be reported through a letter addressed to the
Engineering Innovations Congress organizers on or before April 23, 2015.
e. In the event that all team members cannot be present, they are disqualified from the
Engineering Innovations Challenge 2015. There will be no proxy teams.
f. Presentations will be graded by panellists consisting of members of UP Enterprise, the
Dean of the UP College of Engineering, and other stakeholders. Each panellist will grade
each presentation by the following set of rubrics:

Technical and scientific validity
Consistency with submitted proposal
Presentation Manner
Use of resources
Communication
Impact

b. The top three teams will be awarded first, second, and third place respectively, with the
following awards:
i. Php 15,000 and gift certificates First Place
ii. Php 10,000 and gift certificates Second Place
iii. Php 5,000 and gift certificates Third Place
VI.

Legal concerns
a. All participant teams hold full rights to their submitted work.
b. Any form of misconduct or intellectual dishonesty will render the teams automatic
removal from the Engineering Innovations Challenge 2015 and will incur a case to be
submitted to the UP Student Disciplinary Tribunal.
c. All contentions, clarifications, and revisions not specified in this handbook will be subject
to the Engineering Innovations Challenge 2015 organizers.
