Attachment I
Trigonometry Modul
Trigonometry means triangle measure
Trigonometry connects the length of sides and angles in right-angled triangles.
Some important terms
Hypotenuse H

hypotenuse is the longest side in a right-angled triangle.

The side opposite the angle of interest is called the opposite.

The third side (which is next to the angle of interest) is called the
Adjacent.

Adjacent A

Sin, Cos and Tan

Three important formula connect the lengths of Opposite, Adjacent and Hypotenuse with the angle
x:

sin

Opposite
Hypotenuse

cos x

Adjacent
Hypotenuse

tan x

Opposite
Adjacent .

You need to learn these formulae! It sometimes helps to remember them as SOH CAH TOA.

For any right triangle:

calculate other sides if one side and angle known

Opposite O

In a right-angled triangle, the side opposite the right angle is called the hypotenuse. The

Start by labelling the triangle

H, O and A.
We then have to decide whether
to use sin, cos or tan
SOHCAHTOA
Since we know the values of A
and H, we use cos:

We start by labelling the

triangle.
This time we will need to use
tan as we know O and A:

To find angle x, you press
SHIFT tan 0.45.

Because we know O and H, we
need to use sin this time:

GROUP ACTIVITY
1. Discussing in your group then use arch, ruler, and robe to find the meansure the height of
your friend using trigonometry formula ( SOH CAH TOA ) ! (all goup)

19.5 cm
D

AB = 19.5 cm, AC = 19.5 cm and BC = 16.4 cm.

Angle ADB = 90 degrees.
BDC is a straight line.
Calculate the size of angle ABC. Give your
answer correct to 1 decimal place.

3. The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia are both 1483 feet tall. How far would
someone on the ground have to be standing away from the Petronas Tower to have to incline
his or her head only 55? Ignore the height of the person
4. Amanda Hugginkiss is flying a kite with 125 feet of string. The angle Amandas kite string
makes with the horizontal is 33. How high is her kite relative to the ground? Amandas
height 160 cm
5. Abbi is standing on level ground, at B, a
distance of 19 metres away from the foot
E of a tree TE.
She measures the angle of elevation of
the top of the tree at a height of 1.55
metres above the ground as 32.
Calculate the height TE of the tree. Give
your answer correct to 3 significant
figures.

Amanda height is 160 cm, and straight the string are 125 cm, so the hight the kite from the
ground is.

x=68,07 cm
So the kite height are 68,07 cm

5. First find the length TR using trigonometry, specifically using tan:

O TR

A 19
TR

TR 19 0.6249 11.87 metres
So, to get the height of the tree you need to add Abbis height to this distance.
Therefore, height of tree = 11.87 + 1.55 = 13.4 metres
tan 32
