Thesis Statements Writing in college often takes the form of persuasion—convincing

others that you have an interesting, logical point of view on the subject you are studying.
Persuasion is a skill you practice regularly in your daily life. You persuade your roommate to
clean up, your parents to let you borrow the car, your friend to vote for your favourite candidate
or policy. In college, course assignments often ask you to make a persuasive case in writing.
You are asked to convince your reader of your point of view. This form of persuasion, often
called academic argument, follows a predictable pattern in writing. After a brief introduction of
your topic, you state your point of view on the topic directly and often in one sentence. This
sentence is the thesis statement, and it serves as a summary of the argument you'll make in the

Thesis Statement Checklist

1 Do I address my essay title? If not you have two options – re-write your thesis or re-
write your title. Either way they must support eachother.

2 Make it arguable / Opinionated Your thesis must make an


arguable assertion. To test whether your assertion is arguable, ask
yourself whether it would be possible to argue the opposite. If not,
then it's not a thesis -- it's more of a fact. For example:

• Not Arguable: "Computers are becoming an efficient mechanism


for managing and transmitting information in large
businesses." (Who's going to dispute this? It's not an arguable
assertion -- it's a fact.)
• Arguable: "Heavy use of computers may disrupt family
cohesion and increase divorce in society." (This is arguable
because many people may not believe it. It would make a good
thesis!)

3 Be specific
The thesis must also be specific. Avoid broad, vague generalizations. Your
thesis should include detail and specificity, offering the reader the why
behind your reasoning. If your thesis contains words like "good" or "successful,"
see if you could be more specific: why is something "good"; what specifically makes
something "successful"?

• Poor Specificity: "We should not pass the microchip bill." (Hey, not
specific enough! It's just a value statement and doesn't provide
enough reasoning for the reader.)
• Good Specificity: "Because the microchip insert causes serious health
hazards such as cancer and brain tumors to those who use it, the
microchip bill should not be passed." (Now the thesis is much more
specific, and the reader gets a clear idea of what the essay is going to
be about.)

4 Is it interesting? Does my thesis pass the "So what?" test? If a reader's first
response is, "So what?" then you need to clarify, to forge a relationship, or to connect to
a larger issue.
