OneofthepointstobediscussedistheproblemsIfindwiththe
terms used to refer to those drugsnamely that the etymology of the
vocable psychedelics failstoexpresstheiressential,most specificeffects,
whereasthatoftheword entheogens isplainlyselfcontradictoryinthe
lightofgenuinePathsofAwakeningandinparticularofBuddhismand
Dzogchen.AnotherofthethingstobediscussedistheneologismIcoined

To begin with, it must be remembered that psychedelics, the
etymology of which is mindmanifesting,49 is the term that in 1957
HumphreyF.Osmondivcoinedfortheclassofpsychoactivesubstancesthat
includes LSD, mescaline and tryptamines such as those present in
psilocybemushrooms(psilocybinandpsilocin)andmanyofthosefoundin
otherorganisms,includingDMT,5MeODMT,N,NDMT,DET,DPT,5
MeODIPT, 5MeOMiPT, AMT, 5MeOAMT,etc,v andthatthereafter
the term has been applied to miscelaneous psychoactive substances
including: designer amphetamines such as MDA, MMDA, DOM (4
Methyl2,5Dimethoxyamphetamine,widelyknowninthestreetsasSTP)
and TMA; dissociative general anesthetics such as ketamine, PCP and
DXM / DM; miscellaneous substances such as the harmala alkaloids
presentinSyrianrueandAmazonplantsoftheBanisteriopsisfamily(such
as harmine and harmaline), muscimol (the active principle of amanita
muscaria and amanitapantherina),ibogaine(theactiveprincipleofthe
CentralAfricanshrubTabernantheiboga),andanevergrowing,hugelist
ofsubstancespossessingmindalteringeffectsthatmaydifferwidelyfrom
onesubstancetothenext,butwhichinallcaseshavethepowertoexpand
thefocusofconsciousawareness.

TheproblemIseewiththetermpsychedelicsisthatitsetymology
aptlyrespondstowhicheversubstancescanbringunconsciouscontents
intoconsciousawareness,makeusperceivephenomenathatdonotbelong
to the commonly perceived reality we call the physical world, induce
feelings or emotions that do not respond to events in our commonly
perceivedreality,andsoon,asallofthemcouldlooselybeassertedto
makethepsycheevidentor showthepsyche.However,notallsubstances
havingsucheffectsare universally classedaspsychedelicswhereason
theotherhandallsubstancesunanimouslyclassedassuchhavethepower
to expandthefocusofconsciousawareness.Thissuggeststhat theterm,
ratherthanbeinguniversallyunderstoodinitsetymologicalsense,inwhich
it would include all such substances, is as a rule used in the sense of
consciousnessexpandinganeffectthatcouldaptlybeconveyedbythe
neologism psychekteinic.50vi My conclusion is that, (1) the term
psychedelicdoesnotproperlyrespondtothemostcharacteristiceffect
common to all the substances universally classed as such, and (2) the
category under discussion includes various subcategories that need be
clearlydistinguishedfromeachotheramongwhichatthispointIdeemit
relevanttomentiontheoneslistedbelow.
(1)Theoneembracingthosedrugsthatpertaintotheclassforwhich
IcoinedthetermCREV,whichincludeLSD,mescaline,tryptaminessuch
aspsilocybin, psilocin,DMTand 5MeODMTandtherestof thedrugs
thatwerethemainfocusofthemostinfluentialtwentiethcenturypublicists
of socalled psychedelicsincluding the founding members of MAPS
(Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) and the authors

mindnumbing effects; making people feel detached both from the
environmentandtheirownselves;andhavingaheroiceffect,inthatoften
theyinduce feelingsof strength,power,invulnerabilityandthelikevii
theireffectsthusbeingverydifferentfromthoseofCREVexceptinthat,
like many of the latter (e.g., LSD, mescaline, psilocybin, etc.), these
substanceshaveaconsciousnessexpandingeffectthattendstodissolvethe
ego boundaries and to induce depersonalization and, in general,
derealization,andarepotentiallypsychotomimetic(withregardtothelatter

morepotentyoposnuff.xiiItisclaimedthatthesameusewasmadeofBufo
toad exudationsxiii in Asia and the West Indies. And a similar use is
currentlygivenintheUStothedesignerdrugcalledfoxymethoxy(5
MeODIPT),andtothecombinationofecstasy(MDMA)andLSD.Etc.
Substances like cannabis and MDMA are often placed in the
borderlineofsocalledpsychedelics.Cannabis,which aivasregardasa
sacredplantoftheirLordivaastatuslaterendorsedbytheAtharvaveda
andthereforeacceptedbyorthodoxBrahmanismwhetheringestedorally
in the form of bhang (its original form, which is the one that the
Atharvaveda endorsed) or smoked in the form of ganja or charras
(hashish)xivthe latter being the form in which most aiva sdhus
presently ingest ithas a significantly milder consciousness expanding
effect than LSD, mescaline, psilocybin and the like, and besides is
somewhathypnoticyetinsomecasesconsumershavereportedeffects
similar tothoseof thelatter drugs. Thedesigner amphetamineMDMA
(ecstasy),whichisoftenexcludedaltogetherfromtheclassofdrugscalled
psychedelics,inducesapleasanttinglingalongthespineoralloverthe
bodythatmayincreaseinintensitytoenrapturedlevels;furthermore,ifthe
subject engages in erotic relationships, this sensation may mingle with
erotic pleasure, making the latter particularly intenseyet on the other
handithasbeenestablishedasthecauseofmanydeaths,andthefactthatit
elicitslovingacceptanceofselfandenvironment,blocksinhibitions,and
arouses enthusiasm for the ideas received during its effects even when
these contradict the individuals ideology, in spite of causing it to be
deemedusefulintreatingsometypesofpsychoses,couldalsomakeitquite
effectiveasabrainwashingtoolandameanstoeludetheconflictsthat,as
notedinChapterI,catalyzeprogressonthePaththusworkingsomehow
liketheSomamedicineofHuxleysBraveNewWorld.
Infamousopiatesarewellknowntobenarcotic,heroic,anesthetic,
physically addictive, extremely detrimental drugs; since they induce
hypnoticstatesinwhichdreamsmayminglewithhallucinations,strictlyon
the basis of the etymology of the term psychedelics they qualify as
members of this class. Likewise, psychoactive plants of the solanace
family such as the many species of Datura, or as Hyocamus, Atropa
belladonnaandMandragoraautumnalis/Atropamandragora,besidetheir
hypnoticandanestheticeffect,haveagreaterhallucinogenicpotentialthan
mostsocalledpsychedelics,beingcapableofproducingvisionsthat,due
totheirlifelikecharacterandprobablyalsotothehypnoticeffectofthe
substancesinducingthem,ordinarypeopleareunabletorecognizeassuch
and, according to the nature of the visions, tend to mistake either for
elementals, spirits or demons, or for phenomena of our commonly

Atanyrate,afterawhilewegetusedtothepleasure,andthusour
attitudeswitchestooneofindifferencefollowingwhich,sincethereisno
longer a pleasure so intense as to keep us absorbed in it, distractive
thoughts of all kinds toss us about. Thus we yearn for a more intense
pleasure, in an experience characteristic of the realm of Tantaluses or
hungryghosts59which,foritspart,mayleadustoactinwaysthatwe
hopewill increasepleasureinthehopeof climbingbacktothehigher
regionsofthesphereofsensuality.Ifweendupmakinglovewithour
partner, the intensification of sensation may help the recurrence of a
suspensionofjudgment60beforesensation,whichwillthenbefollowedby
theinterpretationofthesensationintermsofintuitivethoughtsthatcould
be expressed discursively as allpervading, boundless, inexpressible
pleasure.Thekeypointhereisthat,afterenteringthesamsaricsphereof
sensuality,differentemotionswilltossusabout,makingustransmigrate
throughthesixrealmsofthatsphere(betweenonerealmandthenext,a
sequenceroughlyofthesamekindastheonejustdiscussedoccurs,yetas
it is impelled by intense passions, rather than developing slowly and
distinctly, it is likely to develop rapidly and confusedly, as it does in
everydayexperience).(Inanycase,wemustkeepinmindthatentrance
into the sphere of sensuality does not depend on the arising of erotic
pleasure,butontheconceptualizationofwhateveristakenasobjectand
theconsequentpassionalreactiontoit.)
AmongtranspersonaltheoristswhohaveexperiencedwithCREV,
many seem to have taken for an initial manifestation of Awakening or
nirva,whatinfactwasnomorethananinstanceoftheconditionofthe
baseofall carrying propensities followed by an experience of samsaric
formlessness.Infact,asishasbeennoted,instancesoftheneutralbaseof
allcannotbereflexivelyremembered,andhencewhensomeonehasthe
reflexivememoryofhavingfusedintotalitywhileundertheeffectsof
CREV, as a rule what he or she remembers is the experience of the
formlessspherethattookplaceimmediatelyafterthemanifestationofthe
neutralbaseofall,ontheoccasionoftakingthesensorytotalityasobject,
conceptualizingthatobjectasoneness,totality,inexpressiblerealityorthe
like,andasaruleestablishingalinkofbeingwithit.Asnotedabove,after
this experience of the formless sphere, the figure / ground division is
restablished,yetthesingledoutfigurewhichmaybeasegmentofthe
continuum of sensation that ordinarily we interpret as the material
worldisnotimmediatelyexperiencedintermsofadelusorilyvalued
subtle/intuitivethought:memoriesoftheinexpressiblewondrousnessofa

tree,agrainofsandoranyothermaterialstructureexperiencedunderthe
effectsofCREVarerecollectionsofthemomentwhen,afterhavingspent
a longer or shorter lapse in the nonconceptual experience of the figure
propertotheconsciousnessofthebaseofall,thisfigureisinterpretedin
termsofasubtlethoughtthatcouldbeexpresseddiscursivelyasineffable
wonder or the like. In the same way, memories of allpervading,
nondiscrete pleasure are recollections of subsequent experiences of the
higherregionsofthesphereofsensuality.
Doestheabovemeanthat,contrarilytowhatwasaffirmedinthe
mainbodyofthisbook,instancesof nirva maynotoccurwhileunder
theeffectsofCREV?Thiswouldbeawhollywrongconclusion,forasit
hasbeennotedtheiressentialeffectisthatofraisingtheenergeticvolume
determiningthescopeofawareness, and as it has also been noted a
heightened
energeticvolumedeterminingthescopeofawareness
facilitatesthearisingofinstancesofnirva.Infact,allgenuinePathsof
Awakeninghavemeansforraisingtheenergeticvolumedeterminingthe
scopeofawarenessandthusinducehighlyenergetic,panoramicstates
andwithoutsuchmeanstheywouldnotbePathsofAwakening,forthe
highertheenergeticvolumedeterminingthescopeofawareness,themore
likely will the reGnition (of) our true condition be. Furthermore, the
Dzogchen teachings (especially those of the Semde 61 series) compare
primordial,nondualawarenesswithamirror,whilelikeningexperiencesto
reflectionsinthemirror,andnotethatitisveryoftenontheoccasionof
tryingtofindandapprehendthementalsubjectthatseemstoperceivethe
extraordinaryexperiences/statesinducedbytheraiseoftheenergetic
volumedeterminingthescopeofawarenessandthatseemstobedifferent
andseparatefromtheseexperiences/statesor,alternatively,tryingto
apprehendtheawarenessrepresentedbythemirrorthat,providedthatthe
individualhasreceivedbothwhatVajraynaBuddhismcallstransmission
and the corresponding oral instructions, the unconcealment of the true
conditionoftheawarenesssymbolizedbyamirrormayspontaneouslytake
place.
Nevertheless,noBuddhistPath,VehicleorSchoolteachesmethods
involvingtheuseofCREV,andthosethatpossesstraditionalmeansfor
abruptlyraisingtheenergeticvolumedeterminingthescopeofawareness
warnthat these must berestricted toduly prepared individuals, for the
effectsofsuchraisearetoodangerousforthosewhoarenotsoprepared;
thattheymustnotbeusedinthecontextofmereexperimentalism;andthat
the illusory experiences they induce, rather than being taken for
realizations,aretobeusedasspecifiedbytheteachings:asimagesina

need for transmission is almost universal on both the Paths of
Transformation and Spontaneous liberation and in Chn or Zen; even
treasurerevealers62who,withoutdependingonanirmakya[physical]
teacher, receive instructions and empowerment, obtaining the
unconcealmentofDzogchenquaBasethathereIamcallingDzogchen
quaPath, in order to further proceed on the Path need to receive
transmission and teachings from a Master in human form holding a
genuinelineage.Infact,amongtheveryfewwhoreceivetransmissionand
teachingswithoutdependingonaMasterinhumanform,theonlyones
whoreceivecompletesystemsofteachingsanddonotdependonreceiving
furtherteachingsortransmissionsinordertocontinuetoproceedonthe
Path,orinordertoteachothers,arethosethattheteachingscallprimordial
revealersortnpa,63 ofwhichaccordingtotheDzogchenteachingsthere
havebeenonlytwelveinourcosmictimecycle,andwhichariseonlywhen
theteachingsandtheassociatedtransmissionhavedisappearedfromthe
faceoftheplanet.xxvi)
I am so cautious and critical with regard to CREV because a
significant raise in the energeticvolumedeterminingthescopeof
awareness/modificationofbrainbiochemistrysuchastheoneinducedby
these substances, widens thefocus of conscious awareness ina sudden
manner,inducingmoreorlesspanoramicstatesinwhich,sinceperceptual
divisionssuchasthatofsubjectandobjectandthatoffigureandground
areeitherobliteratedortosomeextentblurred,theemptinessofallentities
maybecomepatent,andthemechanismsofelusionresponsibleforwhatin
theDzogchenclassificationadoptedhereisthethirdofthesensesofthe
term avidy (namely, unawareness that the illusory is illusory, that the
baseless is baseless, that the relative is relative) may be impaired. In
individualsoflowercapacities,thederealizationofthedelusiveexperience
ofsubstantialityor,inBuddhisttermstheincipientdawningofvoidness
mayinduce panic andthusgiverisetoapainfulfeelingtone xxvii that,
sincetheindividualnolongerhasanarrow,relativelyhermeticfocusof
conscious awareness that may be zeroed in on a different object, xxviii is
experiencedinitsfullintensity.Thiselicitswholeheartedrejection,which
makes the feelingtone all the more painfulwhich for its part elicits
furtherrejection,activatingahellishpositivefeedbackloopthatmakesthe
painfulfeelingtonerapidlybecomeunbearable.Sincetheindividualclings
totheillusionofselfbeingthatisintheprocessofdissolvingandstruggles
againsttheprocessheorsheisundergoing,intermsofthesymbolismof

Something similar may occur in unprepared individuals if ego
dystonic contents (i.e., contents contradicting their selfimage) emerge
whiletheyareundertheeffectsofthedrug,forthepanoramificationofthe
focusofconsciousawarenessandtheconcomitantthinningofthelatters
walls, which makes them more transparent,xxx makes it impossible to
shieldthosecontents,andhencethoseindividualscouldreacttothemwith
horror or anguishand since theycannotshieldthe feelingtoneinthe
center of the chest at the level of the heart, they would react to it
wholeheartedly,givingrisetothepositivefeedbackloopjustconsidered.
And something comparable could occur even in individuals of higher
capacitieswhowouldexperiencenopanicbeforethepanoramificationof
thefocusofconsciousawarenessandwhowouldnotbedisturbedbythe
intrusion of egodystonic contents, should anguish manifests in their
continuumforadventitiousreasons:beingunabletoshieldthefeelingtone,
theywouldreact wholeheartedlytoit,unleashingthepositive feedback
loopinquestion.xxxi
Theexperiencesbrieflydiscussedabovemayoccurindependentlyof
whetherornotconditionedstatesinducedbyCREVhavebeenmistaken
forunconditionedinstancesof nirva.However,asnotedabove,falling
preytothisconfusionwouldinvolvetheextradangerofdevelopingself
infatuationwhich,worsestill,mayturnintolongtermspiritualprideand
thustakethosewhoindulgeinitfurtherawayfromauthenticityandhence
fromAwakening,andinsomecasesevenleadthemtosetthemselvesupas
gurusinordertogetdisciplesandusethemtoexacerbatetheirconceit(and
bythesametokenleadfollowersalongthemisguidedpaththeythemselves
trod).Fortheseandmanyotherreasons,youthintendingtotransformtheir
consciousnessandhelpsocietydepartfromtheselfdestructivepaththatit
presentlytreads,shouldavoidthepsychedelichedonismofthehippiesin
the1960s,whichintheshorttermproducedanumberofpsychosisand
suicides,andgaverisetoadrivetoobtaincertainty,securityandapositive
identitythatfurtheredboththeproliferationofpseudogurusandspiritual
groups based on manipulation and deceit, and the propagation of ego
enhancing,bodydamagingstimulantsandnarcotics.Likewise,thepainful
experiencesthatsomanyhippiesandparahippiesobtainedfromretaining
delusion and clinging to emotions and conventional frameworks while

openinguptonewstatesof mind,experiencesandwaysofrelatingto
others, gave rise to fear of change, which for its part begot a political
reactiontotherightthatfurtheredecologicaldestructionandStatecontrol.
Inordertoachieveacomplete,therapeutictransformationofconsciousness
andexperience,andthushavethepossibilitytohelpchangethecourseour
species presently follows, we must first receive transmission and
instructions from a true Master officially holding the transmission of a
genuine tradition of Awakening, and then set out to apply those
instructionsinaconsistentway.
AlanW.Watts(1962),despitehavingbeenalucidexpositorofZen
BuddhismandotherAsianPathsandviews,andhavingbeenoneofthe
firstWesternwriterstograspandexplainthespiritualcausesofecological
crisis,xxxiiwaspreytooneoftheerrorsdenouncedabove,forinthenineteen
sixtieshewrotethattheingestionofLSDandsimilarsubstancescould
induce episodesof satori64 withouttheindividualhavingtoundergothe
trainingthat,inEasternPathsofAwakening,isthepreconditionofsuch
occurrences.Furthermore,hisdescriptionsofhisexperienceswhileunder
theeffectsofCREVinthesamework,ratherthanreportingepisodesof
nirva, narrate experiences that any genuine dharmakya yogi would
automatically recognize as not being what Watts believed them to be:
whilesomeofthemmayhavecorrespondedtosomeoftheexperiences
describedabove,mostofthem,despiteexpressingmostvaluableinsights,
obviously featured the understanding of reality in terms of delusorily
valuedcoarse/discursivethoughts.xxxiii Inorder topreventthiskindof
confusion,itisvitaltostressthefact,underlinedthroughoutthisbook,that
trueAwakeningcannotbecaused,induced,producedorfabricated.xxxiv
In fact, as noted repeatedly, since DzogchenquaPath and
DzogchenquaFruit are by their very nature uncaused / unproduced /
unbecome,65 unborn66 andunconditioned/uncompounded/unproduced/
unmade / uncontrived,67 genuine Paths of Awakening, and with the
strongest emphasis the Supreme Path which is Dzogchen Ati, make it
crystalclearthattheycannotbegeneratedbyraisingtheenergeticvolume
determiningthescopeofawarenessorbywhicheverothermeans,andthat
they can only occur spontaneously. In fact, as shown above, a marked
increaseintheenergeticvolumedeterminingthescopeofawarenesscan
expandthescopeofourconsciousawareness,deferrecognition,andgive
risetoconditionedexperiencesofemptiness,clarity,pleasure,etc.which

experiences, but it cannot produce the unproduced. In terms of the
exampleofamirrorthattheSemdeseriesofDzogchenteachingsuseto
illustrateprimordialnondualawareness,theseillusoryexperiencesareno
morethanreflectionsinthemirror,whichhavevalueifandonlyiftheyare
usedastheoccasionfordiscoveringthetrueconditionofthemirrori.e.,
ofDzogchenquaBaseinthemanifestationofDzogchenquaPath.
Aswehaveseen,accordingtoBuddhism,conditionedexperiences
ariseasaresultofthecombinationofamaincause, 71whichisoneofour
karmas,withasetofsecondarycausesorcircumstances.72 Recreational
usersofCREVmayhavegoodtripsiftheyhavethekarmaforhaving
experiencesofthegodsabsorptionsandthis karma coincideswiththe
rightcontributorycausesorcircumstances.However,sinceatsomepoint
theywilluseupalltheiraccumulatedgoodkarmainobtainingexperiences
ofthosespheres,andlongbeforethattime,inoneoranotheroccasion,
unfavorablecontributorycausesmayconcur,soonerorlatertheywillhave
tofaceabadtrip.AmongtheeffectsofCREV,thisistheonemost
fearedbyrecreationalusers,preciselybecauseitistheonlyonethatdoes
not allow them to squander their precious human lifetime in useless
enjoymentofwonderful,pleasurable,extraordinaryexperiencesand,in
unprepared individuals, it is also the one that represents the most
immediatedanger,foritcanevenunleashpsychosesthat,becauseinmost
casestheindividualsthemselvesandtheirhumanenvironmentwillreactin

Dzogchn en particular coinciden en lo que el autor llama su ser descendentes en dos sentidos: en el de deshacer las simulaciones y el auto-engao y
hacer patente nuestra verdadera condicin original, y en el de enfrentar el sufrimiento en vez de eludirlo por medio de la construccin de mecanismos
mentales de auto-engao y auto-represin.
En el volumen III el autor critica radicalmente el sistema integral de Ken Wilber. Mientras que el IV y ltimo volumen contiene las crticas a los
sistemas transpersonales de Washburn y Grof. En los tres apndices de este ltimo volumen se muestran: (1) cmo la tradicin filosfica de Wilber

seeds of the trees Anadenanthera colubrina and Anadenanthera peregrina, in several species of Amanita
mushrooms(includingAmanitamuscaria, Amanitacitrina and Amanitaporphyria),inthelatexofthetakinitree
(Brosimumacutifolium),andintheseedsofMucunapruriensisnotunanimouslyclassedasapsychedelic:though
someclaiminsomecasesithasproventohavesocalledpsychedeliceffects,mostcontemporaryresearchersdeny
this altogether. However, as shown in another endnote, some of the species containing this substance have
reportedlybeenusedasaphrodisiacsindifferentpartsoftheworld.

theseauthors).Itisbecauseoftheirpowerfultendencytodissolvetheegoboundariesandinducedepersonalization,
andbecauseofthedrasticalterationsofperceptiontheyinduce,thatunlikeopiatestheyareunanimouslyclassedas
psychedelics.ThistendencyisdescribedbyKolp,Young,Friedman,Krupitsky,Jansen&OConnor(2007,p.4)as
follows:
(Ketamine)frequentlyinducesinsubanestheticdosesfeelingsofegodissolutionandlossofidentity,emotionally
intense visions, visits to mythological realms of consciousness, vivid dreams and memories of possible past
incarnations, experience of the psychological death and rebirth of the ego, and feelings of cosmic unity with
humanity,nature,theuniverse,andGod.
According to Marcia Moore (Moore & Alltounian, 1978), ketamines psychedelic power to dissolve the ego
boundariesandinducedepersonalizationgoesmuchfartherthanthatofCREV,havingthepotentialtoentirely
evaporatetheobserverandallsortsofconcepts.However,thisisnotanadvantageofketamineoverCREV,fora
chemicallyinduceddissolutionoftheobserverandingeneralofallconceptswillresultinastateoftheneutral
baseofallinwhichneithersasranornirvaareactive,andasshowninthischaptertheDzogchenteachings
comparespendingtimeinsuchstatewithcuttingonesownheadinsofarasnokarmaisneutralizedwhileweare
inthatstateandsospendingtimeinitamountstosquanderingourprecioushumanexistence.Infact,itcouldbe
saidthatthegeneralanestheticsunderconsiderationarethebaseofall(kunzhi[kungzhi])drugsparexcellence.
Furthermore,myimpressionisthat theillegal use ofthiskindofsocalledpsychedelics(i.e., theiruse outside a
genuinelyeffectiveandlegallyapprovedtherapeuticcontext)maybeevenmoredangerousthanthatofCREV,and
thereforethatwarningsagainstthisusewillneverbetoomanyortoostrong(incidentally,MarciaMoorethe
authorjustquoteddiedaftergoingintotheforestinthewinterandinjectingalltheketamineshecouldfind).

The vividness and continuity of the visions induced by ayahuasca is great, even when no additives containing
tryptaminesoftheDMTfamilyareputintothedrink.ClaudioNaranjo(1973)wasstartledbythefactthat,when
takenbycitydwellerswhohadneverbeeninthejungle,harmalineofteninducedvisionsofjungleanimalsjustlike
thosereportedbynativeayahuascausersintheAmazon;likewise,TerenceMcKenna[1990]reportshavinggiven
thedrugtoEskimoswhohadneverseeneithersnakesorbigcatsandclaimsthattheydescribedvisionsofboth).
Harmalaalkaloids(whetherornotmixedwithsubstancescontainingtryptaminesoftheDMTfamily)arealso
regardedasaphrodisiac.
Astothenonpsychotomimeticcharacterofthesesubstances,whichIcalledintoquestionintheregulartext,itisafact
thatsomepeoplehavereportedfrighteningepisodeswiththem.Inmyview,theyaretobeavoided,liketherestof

mustwarnoncemorethatthedangersofsocalledpsychedelicsissogreatthatexperimentingwiththemistobe
strictlyavoided).

substanceisnowadaysdeemedbymostresearchersnottobepsychoactive,asreferredinthenextendnote,the
poisonofthosespeciesofBufotoadsnotcontainingthenotedCREV,5MeODMT,yetcontainingbufotenine,has
beensaidtobeusedasanaphrodisiacindifferentpartsoftheworld,whereastheseedsof Mucunapruriens,which
alsocontainthesubstanceinquestion,areaningredientofvariousAyurvedicaphrodisiacs.

principlesandhencetheeffectsof Amanitapantherina areverysimilartothoseof Amanitamuscaria;however,
usersotherthanSiberianshamanshaveoftenmistakensomeofthemorepoisonoustypesof amanitawiththeone
theyintendedtotake(thisbeingthereasonwhymanualswarnusersnottoeatmushroomsthataretotallywhite).

metabolizedandhencefacenoproblemingettingthroughthebloodbrainbarriertoactivatereceptorsitesinthe
brain.

asweettobeeatenratherthansmokingstuff,andwhichmayhavebeeneithersomethingsimilartobhangladuorto
thebrownielikehashishfudgeobtainedfromtherecipeofferedinthefamed1954AliceB.ToklasCookBook).

withthegodivaandindeedaivayogisusetheminordertoinducevisionsthataretoberecognizedasmere

mentioneddifficultytorecognize Datura visionsforwhattheyarethatmakestheuseoftheseplantsextremely
dangerous:amongtheunpreparedWesternersthathaveusedthemIhavehadnoticeof,averyhighproportion
turnedpsychotic(acharacteristicvisionmanyofthelatterreportisthatofwhatseemtobefireballsorignited
meteoritesfallingtowardthem).Likewise,inIndiatherearestoriesofyogiswhoconsumedtheseplantsandunder
theireffectssawapathonsolidgroundratherthantheravinethatnondruggedindividualsperceivedinstead,and
whentheybegantowalkonthepaththeywereseeing,otherhumanbeingssawthemfallintotheravineandlose
theirlives.
Atanyrate,theaimofDaturaingestingaivayogisindependentlyofwhetherornotitmaybeattainedbythemeans
theyusedissimilartothatofTantricpracticessuchasillusorybodyanddreamyogaanddifferentfromthatof
Dzogchen,inthatitconsistsintheattainmentofaconditionroughlylikethepostContemplationstateofsuperior
bodhisattvas,yogis,siddhas,mahsiddhasandsoonwhichassuchisverysimilartoKenWilbersandStan
Grofsconceptionofthefruitoftheirrespectivesystems.Though Vajrayna Buddhismvaluesthiscondition,it
viewsitasarelativeconditionratherthanastheabsolute,ultimateFruit,andatanyrateemploysradicallydifferent
meansforachievingit.Infact,itisextremelydangeroustoconsumetheseplantsoftheirderivates ,whichIadvise
allreaderstoavoid.

maybesaidsomehowtobeValueinsofarasitsillusorylackbytheforSelfisthesourceofallprojectionsofvalue.
