ALUMINIUM - CODE A
FRP (fibre re-inforced plastic) or fibreglass moulded grating is commonly used where a metal product is
not suitable. There are two basic types of moulded grating. Code type I uses isopthalic resin and code
type V uses vinylester resin. FRP is non-magnetic, has low thermal conductivity is non conductive and
non sparking. It is used in corrosive environments and where weight and hygiene may be issues.
For further information see page 26.
Aluminium is usually used when weight or corrosion is an issue. Typical applications are in sewerage
treatment facilities and other aggressive corrosive environments. Aluminium can also be used in
commercial applications including sunscreens, privacy screens and security screens. Aluminium grating
can also be supplied with floorplate or mesh attached if required. For further information see page 32.

Loading Classifications
The loads applied to grating can usually be split into two basic categories:
These usually occur when motor driven trolleys or wheeled vehicles are run over the grating.
For point load applications please contact your local Webforge Sales Office.
Uniformly Distributed Loads (UDL)
Uniformly distributed loads are more commonly used for general walkway and flooring applications.
Most standards relate the loads that floors have to withstand in this format.
Some common applications are listed below.

Slip Resistance
With the requirement to provide safe places of work, the slip resistance of the
flooring and walkway products needs to be considered. On steeply sloping walkways
between 150 and 200 cleats can be used to improve slip resistance. The standard
surface uses plain flat edge bar Code P - Plain but to increase slip resistance further
the following points should be considered:
Steel & Aluminium
Serrated grating can be specified. Serrated grating is when the top of the loadbars
are notched. To specify use the Code S - Serrated.
In addition both steel and aluminium grating can improve their slip resistance
by setting the direction of walking over the floor parallel to the loadbar span.
Cross rods can be spaced at 100mm centres for better grip.
Fibreglass Grating
FRP grating is provided with an antiskid surface. This is a coarse grit that is bonded
to the top surfaces of the grating.
Expanded Metal
Expanded metal slip resistance is improved if the direction of walking coincides with
the nominal short way of the mesh.
Types of Treatment
Steel grating is available galvanised to AS/NZS4680 - Code G, to protect against
corrosion, or bitumen dipped - Code B, or left untreated - Code U.
Aluminium flooring can be Anodised - Code A, Powder Coated - Code PC or left
as Mill Finish - Code M.

ALUMINIUM - CODE A
Aluminium is usually used when weight or corrosion is an issue. Typical applications are in sewerage
treatment facilities and other aggressive corrosive environments. Aluminium treads can be anodised or
powder coated or left as mill finish.

Webforge offer a range of standard treads which will meet all applications.
The following tread selections are available.
The standard tread lengths are 750mm and 900mm and can be bolt in
type or weld in type.
The steel and stainless steel tread widths are 245mm or 285mm.
The narrow tread width is used when the stringer member is a small
section or the stair angle is steep.
The standard bolt in end plates for the treads are shown on Page 7.

Nosing
Webforge recommends that steel, aluminium and stainless steel stair treads
are fitted with an abrasive grit yellow nosing. FRP treads are supplied with a
black antiskid nosing. This complies with the safety requirements that the
edge of the tread should be clearly visible against the background and the
tread surface should be slip resistant. Other nosing are available on request.

Notes: 1. The standard lengths of all panels are 6000mm. 2. The weight of fabricated grating increases with the addition of
fittings, banding & treatment. The following % increases are a guide only: A&B Pattern - 12%, C&D Pattern - 14%, F Pattern 16%. 3. The table on page 20 has been arranged in increasing strength order. 4. U = Safe superimposed uniformly
distributed load in KPA (100kg/sqm = 0.98KPa) 5. D = Deflection in millimetres for the load U. 6. Mass is calculated in the
untreated condition. 7. Loads are calculated in accordance with an allowable bending stress of 171.6 MPa. 8. Loadbars are
assumed to be simply supported. 9. Webforge reserves the right to use alternative section sizes provided this does not affect
the performance of the product.

Integral Construction
1. Integral, onepiece construction increases
loadbearing capabilities.
2. Load applied to a Webforge FRP bar transferred to
adjoining bearing bars, assisting in load
distribution on the grating as well as on the
support structure.
3. Square grid patterns benefit from integral
onepiece construction. Smooth resinrich vertical
surfaces and tapered bars allow all debris to fall
through.

Integral Construction
1. Integral, onepiece construction increases
loadbearing capabilities.
2. Load applied to a Webforge FRP bar transferred to
adjoining bearing bars, assisting in load
distribution on the grating as well as on the
support structure.
3. Square grid patterns benefit from integral
onepiece construction. Smooth resinrich vertical
surfaces and tapered bars allow all debris to fall
through.
