Can you name some reference materials/books that give information quickly and
easily? (dictionary, encyclopedia, etc.)
What information do we get from an encyclopedia? Almanac?
Reference books make up an important part of a librarys nonfiction book collection.
They contain facts and information about any subject. Reference books are not
meant to be read from cover to cover. Use them when searching important facts
and information about a particular subject.
Go over the pages of an Encyclopedia, what information can you get from it?

Different types of information and data on any subject are sourced from varied
kinds of general references such as almanac, encyclopedia, atlas, and maps among
others.

Additional Reference
The Library
When studying, it is important that we know where to find things because much of
our work in the years to come will be with books, periodicals, news, materials,
learning aids, etc. This early, we should be able to know how to use the library and
its resources.
The library is the rich storehouse of knowledge. It is the most important tool in
researching and knowing how to use it will help us, at least, get ahead of others
when it comes to advanced readings. Library forms a vital part of the worlds
system of communication and education. Through books, films, recordings,
periodicals, and other library resources, media information included knowledge
accumulated through the ages is made available to pupils and students.
I. Parts of the Library
A. A Reference Section
Encyclopedia, dictionaries, atlases, almanacs, yearbooks, manuals, magazine
indexes, handbooks, directories, gazetters and biographical

dictionaries are systematically arranged in this section for classwork or personal


inquiries.
1. Encyclopedia
It covers so many subjects which are contained in a number of volumes. Articles in
each set are arranged alphabetically. They include illustrations as well as
entertaining and informative articles. When using the encyclopedia, you have to
look into the following.
a. Arrangement of Topic
The encyclopedia lists topics which have lasting interest to so many people are
found here.
Examples:
1.Scientist and their inventions
2. Playwrights
3. Composers and their works
4. Countries: capital, cities, population
5. Kinds of birds
b. Guide Letters
A letter or letters on the binding of the volume indicate the topics treated in that
book. Information about Spain and Tutankhamen can be found in a volume marked
R -V.
c. Guide Words
As in a dictionary, a set of encyclopedia contains guide words that show the first
and last topic in each volume.
2. Yearbook
It is often called annual. It gives an account of valuable factual information about
different events each year.
3. Almanac
Originally, an almanac was a projection of the coming year, holidays and weather
forecasts. Now it is the same given to a collection of information including statistics
of many kinds too recent to be included in an encyclopedia.

1. People authors, scientist, political and military leaders, athletes, entertainers,
musicians and other w-renowned world figures
2. Places countries, cities, landmarks, buildings, etc.

What is the importance of using an Almanac?
4. Atlas
If you are looking for maps, plates or charts, youd better consult your atlas. They
have a bound collection of these, minus the explanation. This collection may be
contemporary or historical.
Example: World Atlas
5. Gazetteer
It is an alphabetical list of places, including information on location, population, birth
rates, and death rates. It does not give a definition of geographical terms.
Example: Websters Geographical Dictionary

6. Handbook
It is a small book providing miscellaneous bits of information. It is sometimes called
a manual.
7. Biographical Dictionary
If you are looking for or needing some sketches about the lives of famous
individuals then this is your reference. You can be assured that your surnames are
arranged alphabetically.
Example: Whos Who
8. Directory
The name and addresses of a persons, organizations or institutions are listed in a
directory. It may also give pertinent information about the purposes, dues and
officers of a given organization.
Example: The Directory of Special Libraries and Information Centers
9. Index
An index shows where a particular information can be found. Articles that appear in
periodicals have indexes. There are also indexes to articles, essays, novels and
other writings appearing in collected works.

B. Reserved Book Section
Books that are reserved are read in the library. They cannot be drawn out for home
use.

C. Filipiniana Section
Any book or pamphlet about the Philippines including award winning plays, poems
and novels written by Filipinos are placed in this section.
D. Periodical Section
Magazines, periodicals and newspapers that contain many interesting and valuable
articles on multifarious subjects including current issues are available in this
section.
E. General Circulation Section
Nonfiction and fiction books, novels, plays, and poems, which students can draw out
for several days are found in this section.
