Report Analysis on the Case Study Stealing Time

Article 'Stealing Time' tells the story of a teacher named Robert Carter who has a
student with behavioral problems. Robert Carter is a teacher who has been teaching for
7 years. He is also a fourth-grade teacher and he applies discipline in classrooms and
some students who have behavior problems showed a positive change. He has set a
standard at the beginning of each year by ensuring that all students know the limits and
confines of an acceptable behavior in classrooms. He is confident with his decision, and
he found his students can adhere to the standards he set. Robert also believes, if he
does justice to his students, they also do justice to it. Made as a result of the standard,
the classroom became a small community where all members know what to expect and
how to behave well at all times. Robert finds problematic pupils and always cause
problems in the classroom also changed as expected.
Last autumn as usual, he was very happy when Andy and Martin who was a poor
student in terms of background, behavioural and academic problems have shown
improvement and progress with help of special education teachers. So did David, a
student from class learning problem have been confirmed normal. David will come to
class where Robert is teaching and do activities with other students. Soon after the
Christmas holidays, David was eligible to be placed in a regular classroom at least 51
percent every day. However, David still receiving special education services, but he
spent many hours learning in a regular classroom. Now, Robert become mathematics
teacher of David.
A few days later, Robert felt there was a change in David. Some of the changes
are David did not send math assignments, disrupting Robert and other partners to make
weird noises in classroom. He also deliberately slamming the book aloud on the floor
and tapped a pencil on the table and making noise at his desk. When Robert advices
him, he ignores what Robert say. Robert considers his actions as a rude behaviour and
disrespectful that has been bothering the teacher and other students. Robert also
thought that maybe David too pampered while he was in special education classes
because there David got the full attention of the teacher. David temperament are

becoming more common, and he does whatever he wants, wants to show off and
disrupt the class.
Davids behaviour is getting worse. Robert himself began to feel not like and just
because a student named David has been damaging what he earned over the years.
David often says he wants to return to the original class and want the old teacher. David
did not provide an opportunity for Robert to become a teacher. David did not like Robert
and new friends. Robert feels that he has failed to make up David and he does not
know how to explain it. At the same time the relationship David and other students
became worse.
Due Robert has conducted teaching math using cooperative teaching methods.
David refused to complete the given task within the group and gross treats partners who
are trying to help. Finally, classmates began to complain about his actions. Thus, Robert
takes action by not allowing David recess because he did not complete the task. On the
day, Robert distribute task to David and he has been cast the task on the table. This led
Robert grew angry and had imposed a 'time-out' but his actions futile. Next Robert
brought David to the student's desk in the principal's office.
David intends to talk to Robert but after Robert reached him, he decided to
cancel. Soon he was talking to Robert. He says that she does not want his classmates
stare and he promised to do works. Davids behaviour improved for a few days
afterwards. Unfortunately, once again David shows behavior like being angry at
everyone. At the same time Robert and David cannot tolerate. Robert has fined David
as usual, he was not allowed outbreak. Robert told the principal and he has been talking
with students about the behaviour of David is unfair for all students. One day, Robert did
not allow David break out for the same reason of not completing assignments. David left
alone. After the break, Bob lost his watch that left in class. The next day, David ran to
the table and told Robert that his father had given him the watch. Robert told David to
take off the watch after check the watch, Robert feel angry and frustrated. He is
confident that Bob's watch.

In this model, Dreikurs stresses the importance of trust and responsibility of

teachers to pupils. Teachers need to identify the cause of discipline problems. Dreikurs
opinion about self-discipline can be achieved in a democratic classroom atmosphere.
Democratic classroom atmosphere is where teachers and students can work together to
make decisions. According to Dreikurs well, problematic behavior due to the motives
such as getting attention, challenge power, revenge and displaying a lack. Therefore, as
a teacher, Robert's role is to help students understand the motives of behavior.
Furthermore, David was originally belonging to the students who have learning
disabilities. David should get more attention or should always be observed. Pupils
should also be given the option to act, rather than an immediate punishment.
The next model is the proposed solution selected for this case study is the
behavior modification model (BFSkinner). This model uses the principle of
reinforcement, and it also leads to external elements. Reinforcement is given to satisfy
the stress and stimulates the brain. If observed through reading this story Robert does
not use reinforcement instead fine David. Reinforcement and fine is a different matter.
There are two types of reinforcement positive reinforcement such as praise, reward and
merit. Reinforcing the other is negative reinforcement, for example, students play robot
while the teacher is teaching, then, the teacher confiscated the robot to attract pupils
attention and focus. Fines are a punishment for wrong behavior or unwanted. As
performed by Robert on David is punishment because David was not given a choice.
Based on a reference made, any teacher who wants to use this model must
analyze the behavior of students first. Then think of the unwanted behavior at the
present time and studying the behavior and consequences. In addition teachers need to
make modifications to the plan to list the behaviors that need special attention. Teachers
also need to identify the rules, reinforcement and consequences. It would be better if
teachers use positive reinforcement. According to this story, Robert had made a rule but
it may be autocratic causes students follow instructions for feeling terrified.
Robert also needs to motivate the students and not just focus on regulation
alone. Motivations are two of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Robert must provide
extrinsic motivation to improve preparedness David to learn. For example David did not

submit assignments, solutions to provide counseling to David. Robert should soak any
problems encountered by David before acted recklessly by giving fine.
