REPORT/PROPOSAL
Be clear about the purpose of your report / proposal. Report usually
involves an account of sth which has happened and the presentation and
interpretation of information deriving from this. Proposal is mostly devoted
to making recommendations for a future project or course of action.
Organise it carefully, use headings for each sections, group your ideas
clearly and logically. In proposal the most important section is
'Recommendations' in the middle.
If writing a proposal think about who will be the person to read it and
choose appropriate register and style. If it's a report use impersonal style
and register.
Only include details which are strictly relevant.

Sample answer:
Q: A group of American students is going to participate in a workshop organised by your
school. They have never been in your town before so their tutor, Mr. Franklin, has asked you
to write a report about places that are worth visiting in the area. Write a report describing the
places and explain why you think they may be of any interest to the group.

To: Mr. Franklin

From: Francesca Wilson
Date: 12 November 20...
Subject: Places to visit during your stay in XX
Introduction:
This report is written to analyse places of interest that may be worth visiting by your group. I
have called the tourist information office to check admission fees and opening hours that
would be suitable for you.
Places to visit in XX
There are many places in the area which are worth recommending but unfortunately some of
them are open to public only in summer peak season. However, there are two attractions
that may be taken into consideration as they seem suitable for you:
1. The Dungeon is a very popular tourist attraction in XX. It is a former(overkill, drop it) jail
tower from the 17th century. Today you can visit the prisoners' cells and see there a great
collection of arms from previous centuries.
2. The Labyrinth is the place where you can have a lot fun. There is a number of dead-end
corridors and some leading to the exit. You are supposed to find the way out in a given time.
The place is open on weekends and there are big discounts for groups.
Conclusion:
I would not hesitate to recommend both of these places to your group. These attractions are
well-known and popular among foreign visitors.

REVIEW
Know what you have to write about and who you are writing for.
Have the appropriate vocabulary to describe a film or a book.
Know what tone (light / persuasive / friendly) to adopt. Use descriptive
adjectives, verbs and adverbs to make it more interesting.
Write an introduction which will make an immediate impact on your
readers.
Conclude your review with a reflective comment which reinforces your
purpose of writing.
Include the reported views of people you have spoken to (if appropriate).
Include both positive and negative points.
If two or more separate reviews are required, write equal amounts on
each.
Give a brief summary of the plot and remember to state the title of what
you are reviewing.
The story is fast-moving and will have you in the edge of your seat
throughout.
An impressive team of animators has produced techniques that are
absolutely first-class.
And above all, it's an extremely funny film.
Although sth of a disappointment in relation to previous... this film has an
unusal plot and gives reasonable value on special effects.
Set in time and place the film tells the story / recounts events in...
I found the plot rather conventional / predictable / contrived / completely

bizarre / absurd...
The novelist has succeeded in creating an extremely intricate / complex
plot / entirely believeable / life-like characters.

INTRODUCTION
This report is intended to evaluate the success of the six months {1} English
Course, which I have assisted {2} recently at the Academy Center in English.
LOW AREAS {3}
First of all, as there were twenty of us in the class, we were a bit crowded, and
also the computer room was not big enough for all of us. Another thing to
mention as a drawback is the cost of the course being too high.
PLUSES
As I had expected, {***} {4}teachers were well-qualified and friendly, {***} {5}
whats more, there were a pleasant atmosphere among the other students. As a
consequence, my English improved a lot.
CONCLUSION
To sum up, my only suggestion would be reducing the amount {6} of students
per class. Otherwise, the course was great and interesting and I have enjoyed
studying. I would recommend it to my friends and I am sure I will be back in the
future. {7}
