ULYSSES vs. ODYSSEUS

The Comedy of Gesture and Movement, and Laughter Linked with the Human
Physical Form in the Novel Ulysses by James Joyce
S u m m a r y
The paper brings an introduction into the reading of James Joyces Ulysses
from theoretical perspectives based on the theories of laughter. In the first part,
Joyces novel is freed from the erudite construction of mythological intertextuality
which mainly obscures the richness of its forms of comedy and laughter. On that ba
sis, the so-called lower comedy forms are examined (the comedy of gesture and mo
vement) in order to polemicise with some aesthetic theories who deny these forms
the possibility to enter the realm of pure aestheticism. After that, we discuss the old
comedy technique of laughter linked with the human physical form and the link bet
ween aesthetic categories of the ridiculous and the ugly.
