Rizal Shrine

The Rizal Shrine dedicated to the lifework of Jos Rizal is located on Santa Clara Street, Fort Santiago,
Intramuros, Manila, 1002 Philippines.
This is a fortified complex which houses the building the Philippines' national hero spent his last night and
where his family later found concealed in an oil lamp, the famous poem Mi ltimo adis (My Last Farewell).
The shrine is home to various memorabilia such as the shells he collected in Dapitan, books, manuscripts
and artworks belonging to the prodigious and multifaceted Rizal. Fort Santiago served as barracks for
Spanish artillery soldiers during Spain's colonization of the islands.
At the heart of every nation is a fierce passion for preserving its freedom and the virtues it holds dear. And
in the case of our mother land, Dr. Jose Rizals life, beliefs and works resonated with such wisdom, love
and integrity that it only deserves our eternal recognition and deep appreciation.
Such a place that is devoted to our national hero is the Rizal Shrine Museum in Fort Santiago, Intramuros.
Though it has long been standingits construction started in 1953, in factit still draws in droves of
admirers from all corners of the world, especially curious children who long for a more fervent
understanding of their national history and identity. In 2012, the museum had over 300,000 guests.
As part of its continuing dedication to re-introducing Rizal to younger generations, the National Historical
Commission of the Philippines (NHCP)in charge of preserving such landmarks of importancerenovated

the Rizal Shrine Museum in 2013. And with the kids on vacation, it presents a great opportunity for parents
to consider a more educational approach when it comes to summer recreational activities.
Martyrdom of Rizal

Rizal Park (Filipino: Liwasang Rizal) also known as Luneta Park or colloquially Luneta, is a historical urban
park located along Roxas Boulevard, City of Manila, Philippines, adjacent to the old walled city of
Intramuros. Since the Spanish Colonial Era, Being one of the largest urban park in Asia, It has been a
favourite leisure spot, and is frequented on Sundays and national holidays. It is one of the major tourist
attractions of the City of Manila.
Situated by Manila Bay, Luneta is also an important site in Philippine history. The execution of national hero
Jos Rizal on December 30, 1896, fanned the flames of the 1896 Philippine Revolution against the
Kingdom of Spain. The area was officially renamed Rizal Park in his honor, and the monument enshrining
his remains serves as the park's symbolic focal point. The Declaration of Philippine Independence from the
American Occupation was held here on July 4, 1946 as were later political rallies including those of
Ferdinand Marcos and Corazon Aquino in 1986 that culminated in the EDSA Revolution.
Profile
The bronze-and-granite Rizal monument is among the most famous sculptural landmarks in the country. It
is almost protocol for visiting dignitaries to lay a wreath at the monument. Located on the monument is not
merely the statue of the national hero, but also his remains.
