Kariba Dam Wall

Kariba dam was built from 1955 to 1959,
designed by the French Engineer Andre Coyne.
The massive dam wall was built by the Italian
company Impresit with the help of locals from
Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The wall
stands at 128 m high, 617 m long and is 26m
wide at the bottom and 13 on top. It is a double
curvature arch dam with 6 flood gates that
churn out between 2,000 to 3,000 cubic meters
of water per second per gate when opened. The

Speaking Chitonga and the guardians of the

Nyami Nyami river god. Nyami Nyami corrupted
from Nyama Nyama is the Tonga river god who
used to appear when summoned by the people
long ago. With a head like a snake and a body of
a fish, would appear and villagers would cut
meat from the Nyami Nyami, after that he would
go back into the water and his wounds would
heal. Locals would appease him by performing
rituals. Learn about the Tonga customs and way
of life when you visit Kariba.

Our Kariba is strewn with amenities to suit your

style and needs. We have got hotels and lodges
on the shores of Kariba which command the best
view of the lake and the panoramic islands.

Operation Noah
From 1959 to 1962 the world stood in awe as
Rupert Fothergill and his men created by history
by embarking in the worlds biggest animal
rescue dubbed Operation Noah after the biblical
Noah. As the wall was finished receding waters
caused animals to be stranded on mountain tops
that were eventually drowned by the water. A
total of 4,914 animals were rescued.

THE CAMPS OF KARIBA

DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY

Game abounds on the flood plains and in the

Mopane woodlands of Mana Pools. Kanga Pan
particularly attracts great game in big
concentrations as it is the only water found in
the floodplain above the river. The predators,
including lion, wild dog and leopard are often
sighted and large concentrations of buffalo can
be found in the Mopane woodland and open
plains studded with Ilala Palms. Kudu, zebra,
impala and waterbuck can be seen on the
surrounding plains. Elephant take advantage of
the plentiful "albida" trees in the area. Bird
watching is also a great attraction of the area.

KARIBA ACTIVITIES
Having cascaded over the Victoria Falls , and
tumbled and swirled through the Batoka
Gorge, the old Zambezi River then flowed
gently across a flat valley floor to the Kariba
Gorge. Enter the technologically minded man
and dammed the river into Kariba Dam. The
dam wall with a height of 128 metres and
produces a lake of 5200 km2 in area at full
capacity, then the water surface is at an
altitude of 484m above the sea level. There

are many islands (previously hill tops) in the

lake. The Zambezi River water is rather clean
but poor in nutrients , having filtered through
Barotseland in Zambia. Kariba is one of the
hottest towns in Zimbabwe with temperatures
exceeding 40 degrees celcius. There are a lot
of activities that you can take part in when you
get there. These include canoeing, game
drives, fishing trips, sailing, village tours,
hunting, bird watching, cruises and charters,
speed boating and even more.

Canoeing
Canoeing trips are available and no previous
experience is necessary. You can canoe to from
Kariba to as far as Mana Pools. All canoe trips
and or safaris are led by a qualified canoe
guides, who will assist in the setting up of
camps and preparing meals. Coming soon are
30 minute to 2 hour canoe trips in the Lake
for those who want a canoe without the safari.
Guests paddle between stopping points , while
the remainder of time is left to relax and enjoy
the surroundings.

Around the islands provide the best spots,

Charara Basin is another and on the mouth of
rivers provide plenty of fishing spots. You can
hire a speed boat or you can fish while you are
on a boat charter. I promise that when you go
fishing on the lake you will not go empty
handed with over 30 species of freshwater fish
you can never go wrong. It is not ideal though
to fish during winter as the fish dont bite

Game Drives
A 2 hour game drive is available which will
take you on a route to Chawara passing
through Kuburi Wilderness Area, Crocodile
Farm and Nyanyana Camp. You can also view
game around the Charara Area. You are likely
to come across animals from as small as a
shrew to as big as the elephant. Animals like
impalas, water bucks, warthogs, buffaloes,
hippos will be commonly found. There are over
350 bird species that you will come across.
Bring yourself a camera, and binoculars you
will be accompanied by a qualified guide. You
can also request for a full day game drive of
you wish and have camp style meals during the
day.

Fishing Trips
The lake has got excellent fishing grounds and
is famous for the tiger fish. Other species can
be caught and tales of Vundu as big as small
kids have been caught in Sanyati Gorge.

15

Sailing
Lake Kariba is possibly the worlds best sailing
venue offering a challenge to the fanatical
racing sailor and safety to the easy going
cruising family. Most people prefer the cool
and sunny winter months of April to
September, although many sailing enthusiasits
opt for stronger weather. The lake is divided
into 3 basins Kariba, Sengwa and Binga Basin.
The most popular sailing cruisers are light
weight, high performance vessels with
generous sail areas. Catamarans and trimarans are also very suitable. Squalls and
strong winds can blow at any season of the
year, but in good hands a sailing boat is the
best vessel in which to enjoy battle with
NYAMINYAMI

game from a car. The best walks are conducted

in Mana Pools and Matusadonha the world
famous Parks.

Highlight Tours
Get a chance to tour the most interesting
places in Kariba in just 2 hours. Travel and
have a walk on the dam and enjoy its sheer
magnificence and beauty. Visit the Observation

Kariba. Get to see the famous St. Barbara
Church up the Heights, see the Monument and

the islands.

fish eagle is a bird that surely serves as an
emblem of the lake. You can see this
magnificent bird easily and its call is always
heard around the lake, to see this bird in
action is a marvel. The present checklist
includes 378 species, 15 which are special to
the area. Quite a few are non-breeding
migrants from Europe and Asia , others are

16

breeding migrants from further north in Africa,

and these generally arrive in November and
August. respectively.

Cruises and Charters

Kariba is popular for its cruises, the most
recommended is the sunset cruise which is
approximately 2 hours and you will enjoy and
be amazed by the combination of purple and
brown as the sun gets swallowed by the waters
of Kariba ,during the summer months.. There
are also morning, lunch time or siesta cruises
available. Alternatively you can charter a
houseboat and spend as much time you have
on the lake exploring the islands and watching
game and fishing. .Our houseboats can cater
for any size , for small families we have the
Dolphin Cruisers, for larger families we have
twin or triple pontoon boats. Our houseboats
are also ideal for weddings and parties and
provide memorable experiences. Our bigger
ones notably the Zambezi Trader, Musankwa
and others can accommodate up to 50 people
comfortably and are virtually moving hotels. So
you want to host a conference, why not do it on
the lake, who says business and pleasure
cannot be mixed.

KARIBAS MAIN EVENTS

Kariba Invitation Tiger Tournament
Probably the most exciting event in Kariba,
that is held for 3 day every year in October,
when the tigers leave the deeper parts of
Kariba and come to shallow waters to feed on
the migrating kapenta. The tournament began
in 1960 when a group of farmers thought of

Kariba Half Marathon

Normally held in August every year, the
marathon continues to grow every year. It was
created by Kariba residents and members of
the Kariba Running Club in particular Janine
and Mike Biss. In 2006 Kiarra Hammond and
Cutty Sark Hotel organised it on Sunday 26

August, with 25 marathon and 25 fun runners.

In 2007 it had 78 participants and in 2008
there was 181. the race has been graced by 8
times winner of the Comrades Marathon Bruce
Fordyce who did not compete in 2010 but was
present to autograph participants t-shirts. The
race starts at AMC Windsor Garage to the dam
wall and back and ends at Lomagundi Lakeside
Association. The 10km fun run/walk begins at
AMC and ends at the Association but does not
include a hop to the dam wall.

The event is sponsored by Rooneys, Romeo

Furniture, GoKariba.Com, Lake Harvest
Aquaculture and others. The race has been
described by some as one of the most
gruesome, but with great scenic view of the
lake. There is an after party at

Kariba Annual Sailing Regatta
This is a 24 year old race which is usually held
in the middle of May every year. The race
usually lasts for a week, teams of 2 members
using catamarans and trimarans, sail the
Zambezi and the treacherous Sengwa basin.
From Kariba to Bumi Hills. The competitors
sail during the day and berth at night. Kariba
is probably the best sailing venue offering the
sailor a deserved fight against the legendary
Nyami Nyami.

In 2009 the race attracted 70 entrants which

included 2 teams from South Africa. In 2009
after the competition the entrants had a fun
run in Matusadonha national Park and raised
money towards the conservation of black
rhinos in the Park.
The race is co-ordinated by Sail Safaris, who
have an office at Cutty Sark Hotel.

Chinhoyi Caves Recreational Park

Historically, the first white man believed to have discovered the
Caves was Frederick Selous, the famous European hunter, during
his wanderings in 1887.
It was believed that prior to that the Caves were being used as a
stronghold by an outlaw called Nyamakwere who murdered many
victims by throwing them into the "Silent Pool". The notorious
Nyamakwere was eventually defeated and killed by a Headman
called Chinhoyi who became a Mashona Chief, hence the name
Chinhoyi given to the nearby town. Chief Chinhoyi and his
followers used the Caves as a refuge from raiding tribes such as
the Matebele. Until a few years ago the remains of Chief
Chinhoyi's grain bins could be seen in some of the underground
passages.
The traditional name for the Caves is "Chirorodziva" which means
the "Pool of the Fallen". The name was derived from an incident
which took place in the 1830s when the Angoni Tribe, who were
moving northwards surprised people living near the Caves and
flung them into the pool.
The area close to the caves was first declared a National
Monument and in 1957 it was declared a National Park with its
existing boundaries. It was then redesignated as a Recreational
Park in 1975.
The Caves consist of a system of tunnels and caverns. This system
is a dying one (in geological time spans), in that they are slowly
collapsing. These collapses can be noticed by the sink holes and
depressions within the surrounding area. The Wonder Hole, which
is the main feature of the Caves, is in fact a "swallow hole" or a
large cavern with a collapsed roof.
The walls or sides of the Wonder Hole drop vertically down for
150 feet to the Sleeping Pool. The pool is unbelievably blue and
crystal clear which reflects great depth and non-flowing water.
Exploration by the Zimbabwe Sub-Aqua Spelaelogical Research
Group has revealed that the depth of the water in the Sleeping Pool
varies between 80 metres and 91 metres. This fluctuation in depths
is attributable to the amount of rainfall received in a particular
season. Several under water passages have been found leading

27

from the Sleeping Pool, but all those so far explored lead back into
the Pool. Near the end of the Dark Cave is a small cavern
accessible only to diver known as the Blind Cave. A second one
connects with the Sleeping Pool 58 metres below the surface and
the third one is yet to be fully explored.
The Caves are composed mainly of the sunlit "Sleeping Pool" and
the artificially lit Dark Cave. The Sleeping Pool 46 metres below
the ground level is accessible in two ways:
1.
Through the main entrance with an inclined passage,
where the view of the water has been compared to the famous Blue
Grotto of Capri
2.
Through the Dark Cave, which leads down steps and
along a narrow passage to a point just above the water at the far
side of the Sleeping Pool.
The exit from the Dark Cave is demanding, as the steps are very
steep. Therefore, less agile visitors would be well advised to avoid
this latter option. It seems probable that further caves remain to be
discovered. Research suggests that the water in the cave is
connected to an even bigger body of water in view of the fact that
the temperature in the Sleeping Pool never varies from 22 degrees
Celsius. Excavations in and near the Caves have revealed that
people have stayed around the area from early times. Pottery and
human remains were unearthed from the area which radio-carbon
dated around AD 650.
The Environs of the Caves
Although Chinhoyi Caves Recreational Park covers a large area
only 20 acres of it in the vicinity of the actual Caves are used by
the public. The remainder of the Park is largely taken up with
dolomite mining claims and wooded scrubland.
The Flora and Fauna
The Park's flora is made up largely of indigenous species and a
few exotics. In the indigenous group, there are: Mukwa
(pterocarpus angolencis), Cape Fig (ficus capensis), Combretum
species, Terminalia species, Msasa (brachystegia), Violet tree
(securidaca longipediculata), Yellow wood (monotas glaber) and
Pink Jacaranda (stereospermum).
Although birds are not numerous, there is a wide variety of
species, especially during the dry months of winter. The Park's bird
diversity includes the Arnot's Chat, Angola Rock Thrush, Mocking
Chat, Large Striped Pipit, Woodpecker species, Black Tit,
Redwing Starling, Batis, Flycatcher, Penduline Tit, Glossy
Starling, Bat Hawk, Tree Creeper, Familiar Chat, Paradise
Flycatcher and other species.
There are virtually no large animals in the Park. However,
monkeys, baboons, bushpigs and rock hares can occasionally be
sighted

FACILITIES
The Picnic sites and camp sites are serviced by three ablution
blocks with hot and cold water, baths, toilets and showers.

Lake Kariba Recreational Park

Lake Kariba is among the 4 largest man-made lakes in the world
and the second largest in Africa. The shoreline is over 2 000
kilometres long. Kariba is home to numerous species of flora and
fauna and is an exciting and unique safari destination.
Kariba Recreational Park is based around the Zambezi River,
which was initially dammed so as to build a hydroelectricity
generation utility for the benefit of both Zimbabwe and Zambia.
The dam wall with 6 flood gates was built between 1955 and 1959
and is 128 metres high and 617 metres wide. The lake is 282
kilometres long at full level and 32 kilometres across at its widest
point, 116 metres deep and covers an area of 5 180 square
kilometres of what once was the Gwembe trough. The weight of
the water totals 177 million tons and were all 6 flood gates opened,
over 91 500 cubic metres (300 000 cubic feet) of water would
surge into the river below each second! 86 men perished during
construction of the dam and a church has since been constructed as
a memorial to them. The dam wall was designed by Andre Coyne,
a Frenchman, and built by a constructor called Impresit from Italy.
There are many stories that are put forward to explain the name
Kariba. Some elders in the area note that close to the dam wall lies
a rock that resembles a traditional stone trap, riva, hence Kariva,
later mispronounced by the Europeans as Kariba. The other
version is that the rock was named Kariva due to the fact that
when the river flooded, the Rock trapped water thereby making it
difficult for the locals who often crossed the river to return to
either side of the Zambezi.

barbell and several types of bream.

Seasons
The area generally has hot summers averaging 38 degrees Celsius
and an average rainfall of 660 millimetres. The winters are usually
warm with an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.
Facilities
A slipway has been provided for visitors to Nyanyana to launch
their boats, but when the level of the lake is very low the slipway
cannot be used.
Lodges
The lodges at Nyanyana Camp are fully equipped self catering
facilities. These lodges are situated at the mouth of the Nyanyana
River on the Lake Kariba shore. During the night hippopotamus
can often be heard grazing around the lodge area.
Camp Sites
There are 20 camping sites available within 100 metres of the lake
shore. These facilities together with the caravan sites are serviced
by 2 ablution blocks comprising of showers, baths, wash basins
and toilets. There are several other camps that are utilized on a
seasonal basis. These are much rougher, with very little
development and are more ideal for those yearning for a closer
encounter with the wild.
Caravan Sites
There are 15 caravan sites within the vicinity of the lake shore.
Amenities
From Nyanyana the nearest supplies, foodstuffs, fuel and other
necessities are found at Kariba town, just a few minutes drive
away. At Kariba, one will find most of the hotels, shops, the main
harbours and several other conveniences.
Attractions
Islands spread out on the lake There are 102 islands on the lake
including: Fothergill, Spurwing, Msambakaruma, Rhino, 126,
Long Island, Redcliff, Antelope, Zebra, Kings Camp, 155,
Starvation Island, Lubangwa Island, Twin Sisters, Nemambere
Island, Partridge Island, Whither Island, Paradise Island, Snake
Island, Bed Island, Chete Island among others.

Flora and Fauna

Adapting to the initial flooding and annual fluctuation has caused
several changes in the local animal population around the shores of
the lake. The shoreline is a rich grazing area for many species,
which has in turn attracted the predatory animals that hunt these
species. The lake is renowned for its tigerfish but it is also home to
over 40 fish species that include nkupe, chessa, bottlenose, vundu,

Mana Pools National Park

Mana Pools National Park, which fronts onto the Zambezi River is
a UNESCO World Heritage Site a status it shares with its
downstream neighbouring Safari Areas in Sapi and Chewore. This
magnificent and extensive wildlife and wilderness complex is
widely recognized as one of the finest in Africa.
Magnificent landscapes
The Park has special significance for photographic tourism. It
extends for a distance of some 50ms from the Zambezi escarpment
mountains, through the flat floor of the Zambezi valley to the river
itself, its focal point being the system of alluvial river terraces, up
to 3km wide, which flank the Zambezi River along the park's 50
km river frontage. This narrow and fertile strip of land supports
mature woodlands of magnificent "Winter-thorn" or "apple-ring"
acacia, mahogany, ebony and fig trees. In the dry season, the
shady glades beneath these huge trees, are filled with huge
concentrations of African wildlife - herds of impala, eland,
elephant, zebra, buffalo, waterbuck and kudu - a plentiful supply
of prey for the lion, leopard, wild dog, hyaena and other predators
and scavengers that inhabit this unique and wonderful place.
The Zambezi River at Mana Pools is a wide, meandering vista,
dotted with islands and the shapes of elephants, buffalo and other
wildlife wading in the shallows in search of food. From the
Zimbabwean side of the river, the high escarpment mountains of
Zambia form a spectacular and dramatic backdrop to this idyllic
river scene.
Pools, pans and springs
The park takes its name from the pools that still lie in the
abandoned river channels that run through the terraces. Mana is
said to mean "four", referring to the largest of these pools which
hold water all year. Away from the Zambezi, where pools dry up
during the dry season, wildlife concentrates around a few inland
pans and some springs at the foot of the Zambezi escarpment
mountains. The lions lie in wait, knowing that thirsty prey have no
option but to drink here, and visitors to places like Chitake Spring
are likely to be rewarded with incredible sightings of these
predators in action.

Birds
Mana is also a very special place for birds: fish eagles and many
species of stork, heron and other water-based fowl are common,
scarlet carmine bee-eaters visit in the dry months to nest in
colonies in the river banks, and rare treats include the elusive Pels
Fishing Owl and the African Skimmer, which nests on sandbanks
mid-river.
A wilderness experience
Mana Pools prides itself on offering visitors a wilderness
experience par excellence. Accommodation areas are unfenced and
visitors should be aware that wildlife wanders freely through. It is
one of the few National Parks where visitors are allowed to walk at
their own risk. While this is welcomed by savvy enthusiasts with
plenty of bush experience, it is advisable for visitors to be
accompanied by an armed and knowledgeable professional guide
or a National Parks ranger.
Nature-based activities
In line with the high quality of the wilderness experience offered
in this park, activities in Mana Pools are exclusively nature-based:
day-long or extended canoe trips down the Zambezi River,
walking, hiking, game viewing, bird watching and, at night,
studying the stars in an incredibly clear sky. Limited fishing is
allowed, but only from the land. There are no boat launching
facilities and motor-boats are not permitted on the Mana Pools
river frontage because of noise, pollution and wave action
disturbing the wilderness qualities of the park. Near Chitake
Spring in the south of the park, remains of dinosaur skeletons have
recently been found embedded in deep layers of rock exposed in
the eroded bank of a nearby river. These are being investigated by
specialists.
A Respect the Wild Code of Conduct for visitors to Mana Pools
and other wild areas is displayed at accommodation points
throughout the park and visitors are advised to take heed of its
advice to get the best out of their wild experience.
Specific behavioural guidelines are also available for visitors to
sensitive areas like Chitake Spring.
Access and accommodation
Access to this remote park is by air charter and 4x4 only. There are
no shops and mobile phone network coverage is very limited.
Accommodation is restricted to a handful of safari lodges, and
eco-friendly tented or mobile camps as well as self-catering Parks
chalets. Camping on the banks of the Zambezi river is a feature of
the Mana experience. There is the large and attractive Parks public
campsite at Nyamepi, with shower and toilet blocks or several
remote wilderness campsites which can be booked for sole use,
dotted along the river with basic "long-drop" facilities. Entry to the
park is strictly controlled by the National Parks Authority and prior
booking is essential, either through an agent or operator or through
the Authority itself.

UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site

Mana Pools National Park is synonymous with the Zambezi River,
elephants, lions, remoteness and wilderness.
This unique park is a WORLD HERITAGE SITE, based on its
wildness and beauty, together with the wide range of large
mammals, over 350 bird species and aquatic wildlife. Mana Pools
is one of Zimbabwe's most popular parks, and it is easy to see why
it falls into this profile.
The name "Mana'' means "four" in the local Shona language. This
applies to the four large pools inland from the Zambezi River.
These pools are the remnant ox-bow lakes that the Zambezi River
carved out thousands of years ago as it changed its course
northwards. Hippopotamus, crocodiles and a wide variety of
aquatic birds are associated with the pools. ''Long Pool'', is the
largest of the four pools, extending some six kilometres in a westeast direction. This pool has a large population of hippo and
crocodiles and is a favourite for the large herds of elephant that
come out of the thickly vegetated areas in the south to drink.
As one moves northwards towards the Zambezi River from the
forests on the Karoo sediments, the vegetation changes to open
Faidherbia albida woodlands on the old river terraces. This
vegetation gives an unique look to the area and a surreal light
filters through the trees giving Mana Pools its distinctive
cathedral-like atmosphere.
On the old river terraces, tourists can walk unaccompanied by
guides in the open Albida woodland because visibility is good and
there is little danger of unexpectantly coming across dangerous
animals. This privilege of walking alone in an area with dangerous
wildlife is unique in Zimbabwe. Elephant, eland, buffalo, impala,
waterbuck, baboons, monkeys, zebra, warthog and hippo are some
of the larger herbivores to be seen regularly on the river terraces as
they come out to eat the fallen Albida fruit. Lions, leopards,
spotted hyaena and cheetah are present in the area, but their
secretive nature makes them more difficult to see. Despite this, it is
not often that the visitor leaves Mana Pools without seeing at least
one of these large carnivores.
Northwards, off the river terraces, is the mighty Zambezi River
flowing sedately on its way to the Indian Ocean. This now tranquil
river was a major route for the trade in ivory and slaves in the dark
past.
Mana Pools is 2,196 square kilometres in extent but is part of the
10,500 square kilometre Parks and Wildlife Estate that runs from
the Kariba Dam in the west to the Mozambique border in the east.
This large area is without physical boundaries and the wildlife is
free to move throughout the area - even northwards across the
Zambezi River into Zambia, where there are also large wilderness
areas set aside for wildlife conservation.

Matusadona National Park

Matusadona National Park is situated on the shores of Lake Kariba
but was proclaimed a non-hunting area on 7 November 1958
before the dam was built.
It became a Game Reserve in 1963, and in 1975, in terms of the
Parks & Wildlife Act, it became a National Park. The Park
comprises some 1 400 square kilometers of diverse flora and
fauna. Before the lake was built, Matusadonha was a vast, rugged
wilderness with limited access.
With the lake came ecological changes. One in particular, the
lakeshore contributed greatly to the increase of large mammal
populations in the area, especially elephant and buffalo. The grass
found on the shoreline is Panicum repens and is a rejuvenative
grass - needing only fluctuating lake levels to replenish its
nutrients. With this ready food source, buffalo, waterbuck, zebra,
and even impala have thrived and with them the predators.
Matusadonha is an Intensive Protection Zone (IPZ) and home to
several relocated rhinoceros.
The Environs of Matusadona
The southern boundary of the Park is the Omay communal land
and the northern boundary is the lakeshore. The eastern side of
Sanyati Gorge and the middle of the Ume River provide the east
and west boundaries respectively.
Flora and Fauna
Matusadonha has three distinct ecological areas. First is the lake
and shoreline grassland; second, the Zambezi Valley floor, a mass
of thick jesse and mopane woodland, and; third, the Escarpment
area of Julbernadia and Brachystegia woodlands. The Jesse/
Mopani area is sparsely grassed, but provides habitat for browsers,
most notably the black rhino. Elephants range throughout the Park,
seeking the shade of the Jesse in the heat of the day.
The Escarpment rises some 700 metres above the Valley floor and
is extremely rugged. Over the years, elephant and fire depredations
have caused the once substantial woodlands to dwindle, and in

30

parts, grasslands have taken over. It became necessary to take

control measures to reduce the elephant population to a
manageable size. It also became necessary to carry out early
burning programmes in the upper escarpment, to prevent later, hot
fires from raging through and causing serious damage to tree
growth. The effectiveness of the programmes can now be seen by
the tremendous regrowth apparent in the Escarpment area.
Animal species that are found in abundance include elephant and
buffalo. Other common species are those of: night ape, honey
badger, civet, small spotted genet, slender mongoose, banded
mongoose, spotted hyaena, wild cat, lion, leopard, yellow spotted
dassie, black rhinoceros, zebra, warthog, common duiker, grysbok,
klipspringer, waterbuck, bushbuck, scrub hare, porcupine, vervet
monkey, chacma baboon, side-striped jackal, hippopotamus, roan
antelope, kudu and bush squirrel. Some of the more elusive species
include: clawless otter, white-tailed mongoose, reedbuck, sable
antelope, eland, civet, rusty spotted genet, caracal and bush pig.
Animals that are present but only sighted on rare occasions include
wild dog, cheetah, roan and pangolin.
Facilities
