Eighth graders have graduation unlike any other

Despite a severe storm knocking out power, Harrington Middle School still able to hold ceremonies
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Rain, lightning, high winds
and a tornado warning couldnt
put a damper on eighth-grade
graduation at Harrington Middle
School last Tuesday night.
Graduation for the Oasis and
Everest Houses went on despite
difficult circumstances after a severe thunderstorm ravaged Mt.
Laurel and the surrounding area
between 6 and 7 p.m.
The graduation for Oasis
House began at 5:15 p.m. inside
the Harrington auditorium. At
the start of the graduation, the
weather outside was hot and
sunny. But things began to change
shortly before 6 p.m., when a severe thunderstorm warning and a
tornado warning were issued.
The Oasis graduation completed just as the storm reached its
peak around 6:30 p.m. Marie
Reynolds, director of communications for Mt. Laurel Schools,
said police then held everyone inside the building.
In the building, we had to
move them to the interior hallways until the storm passed, she
said.
Just as the Oasis graduation
ended, the building also lost
power. Harrington is equipped
with generators, but they only
provide enough electricity for

basic lighting.
We were working off of generator lights at that point,
Reynolds said. We had no air
conditioning, and we only had
basic lights from the generator.
As 7 p.m. approached, the
storm began to move out of the
Mt. Laurel area. However, school

administrators had a few problems. Harrington was still without power, and students and families had already begun arriving
for the Everest House graduation,
scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
At that point, school administrators had to decide whether to
postpone Everest graduation or

continue with the ceremonies.

With many students and families
already at the school, the decision
was made to hold the ceremony
as scheduled.
Some of the families had
plans, they had extended family
members in town, Reynolds
said. So we decided to go with

the ceremony.
Without power, school officials
improvised. The doors were
opened to allow fresh air into the
auditorium. With the stage lights
unable to turn on, the students
were taken directly to their seats.
The students remained seated
as the awards and diplomas were
presented. To keep anyone from
tripping in the dark, students
simply stood as their name was
called, and the stage manager
shined a spotlight on each student. A bullhorn was used to
make all of the announcements.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, students and their families
went outside to take pictures they
were unable to get during the ceremony. Still, Reynolds said everyone involved was enthusiastic
and cooperated fully with police
and school officials.
Everyone was amazing, she
said. The parents, the kids,
everyone.
A number of elements were
unable to take place at Everest because of the power outage, including student speeches and a
video of the students. Speeches
and the video were posted at
http://hms.mtlaurelschools.org.
Reynolds said each student received his or her diploma at the
ceremony. The student awards
were mailed to each of the recipients.

Township
completes
water main
replacement
The Mt. Laurel Township Municipal Utilities Authority completed replacement of 1,800 feet of
six-inch water main on Amsterdam Road in April of this year.
MUA Executive Director, Pamela
Carolan explained, Due to the
unusually high number of leaks
on this street, we targeted the 43year-old water main for replacement by 2020.
Last year Mt. Laurel Township
released its 2014 Local Road Program paving schedule and Amsterdam was included on the list.
It only made sense to coordinate
our water main replacement with
Mt. Laurel Townships roadway
paving, MUA Chairman Chris
Smith said.
Design was accelerated to
begin the water main replacement in early spring of 2015.
Once the main was installed a
special backfill was utilized, not
only because it was a better product to prevent long-term trench
settlement, but to also speed up
restoration prior to the townships planned paving. The cost
to the MUA for the new water
main, a new fire hydrant and new
service connection for 35 homes
was $375,000.

Police work to keep residents safe

on roadways following severe storm
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Last Tuesday, many residents
in Mt. Laurel and surrounding
communities were caught by surprise when a severe thunderstorm rolled through the area,
packing high winds, heavy rain
and lightning and leaving pockets
of the township without power.
However, Mt. Laurel Police had
a plan in place to deal with the aftermath of the unexpected storm.
Lt. Stephen Riedener of the Mt.
Laurel Police Department said
the police jumped into action in
handling closed roads and malfunctioning power lines after the
storm passed. The police department used Nixle alerts and social
media to post updates on road closures.
One of the most dangerous obstacles for motorists following a
storm causing widespread power

outages is non-operational traffic

lights. Riedener said the police
department has plans on how to
handle malfunctioning lights.
We have a plan in place for
something thats the safest way to
negotiate
the
intersection,
Riedener said.
In most cases, the police department is forced to set up a temporary traffic pattern instead of
stationing an officer at every intersection where a light is out.
When we have a storm like
that come through, no town has
the staffing to signalize an intersection, Riedener said. Our
only recourse is once were able
to get to it, we put traffic cones
and barriers out.
At intersections where traffic
lights were out, police set up temporary traffic patterns that prevent people from crossing intersections and making left-hand
turns to minimize the danger of

Despite the setup, Riedener

A quick look at world news a reminder of how fortunate we Americans are

rom all of us at Elauwit Media

to all of our loyal readers, we
wish you the happiest and
healthiest Fourth of July.
As rough as things may be at times
in our country our economy is still
recovering, race is still an issue, and
the Phillies cant seem to win a baseball game anymore things could be a
lot worse for us.
A quick glance at the world around
us reveals just how fortunate we are, as
Americans, to have the freedoms we
do. And lets face it, these freedoms we
often take for granted.
Imagine, for just a moment, what it
must be like to live in Syria.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in Iraq.

Independence Day 2015

We give thanks for all the liberties we
have as Americans. We give thanks for
the sacrifices our miliary continues to
make. We give thanks that we are
American.

Imagine what it must be like to live

in Egypt, where theres still instability
and a lack of confidence in the nations
parliament.
We live in a nation where, despite
our differences, we manage to co-exist
peacefully for the most part.
We live in a nation where our Congress and where the office of the president have functioned and survived for
239 years.
We live in a nation where, for the

most part, were free to do as we please.

This simply isnt the case in many
corners of the world.
Today, we give thanks for the liberties won for us hundreds of years ago.
We give thanks for the many women
and men who have made incredible
sacrifices to protect these freedoms in
battle in Afghanistan and Iraq and
countless other places abroad.
We remember their families who,
like they, have also made sacrifices by
saying goodbye so we can do things as
simple as having a barbecue sometime
this weekend.
Finally, we give thanks for all that
America is and stands for. It may not
be perfect, but a quick glance of the
news shows: life could be much worse.

Mt. Laurel native Scott Shoyer infects

readers with new zombie trilogy
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Scott Shoyer grew up in Mt. Laurel, became a doctor of German philosophy and
served as an executive
chef for a number of
years.
Now, Shoyer is writing a fictional zombie
trilogy for horror fans
everywhere.
Shoyers first novel
Outbreak:
The
Hunger is now available for sale on Amazon. It is the first book
SHOYER
of a planned three-part
series.
Shoyer, who now lives in Austin, Texas,
grew up in Mt. Laurel and was a graduate

in the Lenape High School Class of 1988. It

was as a kid when he first fell in
love with the horror genre.
I grew up watching horror
movies, he said. My mom
loved to watch horror movies
as well.
Shoyers love for horror
continued into adulthood.
He has a website, called
anythinghorror.com,
where he writes candid
reviews about horror
films.
I started the website toward the end of
2009, he said. I always felt like I wasnt getting a real, honest review of movies. So I started it
kind of as a side hobby.

While he has been writing horror movie

reviews for almost six years, Shoyer just
got started in novel writing more recently.
Shoyer began to write after becoming a stay-at-home father following years of working as
an executive chef.
It ended up being a great
creative outlet for me, he said.
Ive always been attracted to
that creative side with cooking.
When he was first began brainstorming ideas for a novel, Shoyer
wanted to stay away from zombies
because of how many books, TV
shows and movies had already been
released in that sub-genre. However,
he came up with an original idea after
visiting the Austin Zoo many times with

his son.
My son loves animals, and for
at least a year or a year and a half,
I was taking my son to the zoo at
least once a week, he said.
Theres this crater there as you
walk up this hill. It looks like a
meteor landed there. I thought
what if a meteor with some kind
of virus hit and infected the animals at the zoo?
When I started writing it, I
thought about zombie animals
who infect humans.
Shoyer used this as the basis
for his novel. In the book, a father
and his daughter are at the zoo
when a pack of animals becomes
infected. The main characters
have to avoid becoming infected
while a group of scientists and

soldiers at a nearby research facility try to cure the disease.

While the story for Outbreak:
The Hunger is fiction, the setting is real. The Austin Zoo
served as such an inspiration for
Shoyers book, he decided to set
the story there.
If you were to use my novel as
a map, it would take you through
the zoo as described, he said.
Shoyer had applied to numerous publishing companies to take
a look at his novel. He eventually
signed a contract with Severed
Press, whom he said sent him a
contract days after receiving his
submission.
They had open submission so
I sent it, Shoyer said. Within 24
hours, they said they were interested in it and sent the contracts
days later.
Despite his varied background,
Shoyer said hes not surprised
about becoming a horror novel

writer. Even when he was cooking and studying philosophy, a

part of him always wanted to get
into writing.
In the back of my head, I always wanted to, he said. It was
a matter of trying to solidify a
good enough idea.
Work on the sequels to Outbreak: The Hunger is well underway. Shoyer has already completed a draft of the second book
and is working on the third.
Part two is completed and I
have a couple beta readers going
through it, he said. It still has to
go through the editing process.
Im over halfway done on part
three as well. My goal is to finish
the first draft by the end of July.
Outbreak: The Hunger can
be purchased as a paperback
book or e-book on amazon.com.
