WhatIsPrana?
Pranaisthesumtotalofallenergythatismanifestedintheuniverse.Itisthevitalforce,Sukshma.Breath
istheexternalmanifestationofPrana.Byexercisingcontroloverthisgrossbreath,youcancontrolthe
subtlePranainside.ControlofPranameanscontrolofmind.MindcannotoperatewithoutthehelpofPrana.
ItistheSukshmaPranathatisintimatelyconnectedwiththemind.Pranaisthesumtotalofalllatentforces
whicharehiddeninmenandwhichlieeverywherearoundus.Heat,light,electricity,magnetismareallthe
manifestationsofPrana.Pranaisrelatedtomindthroughmindtothewillthroughwilltotheindividual
soul,andthroughthistotheSupremeBeing.
TheseatofPranaistheheart.Pranaisonebutithasmanyfunctionstodo.Henceitassumesfivenames
accordingtothedifferentfunctionsitperforms,viz.,Prana,Apana,Samana,UdanaandVyana.Accordingto
thedifferentfunctionstheyperform,theyoccupycertainplacesinthebody.Thetablegiveninthefollowing
pageswillgiveyouaclearidea.
Breathdirectedbythoughtunderthecontrolofthewillisavitalising,regeneratedforcewhichcanbe
utilisedconsciouslyforselfdevelopment,forhealingmanyincurablediseasesandformanyotheruseful
purposes.HathaYoginsconsiderthatPranaTattvaissuperiortoManasTattva(mind),asPranaispresent
evenwhenmindisabsentduringdeepsleep.HencePranaplaysamorevitalpartthanmind.
IfyouknowhowtocontrolthelittlewavesofPranaworkingthroughmind,thenthesecretofsubjugatingthe
universalPranawillbeknowntoyou.TheYoginwhobecomesanexpertintheknowledgeofthissecret,will
havenofearfromanypower,becausehehasmasteryoverallmanifestationsofpowerintheUniverse.
WhatiscommonlyknownasPowerofPersonalityisnothingmorethanthenaturalcapacityofapersonto
wieldhisPrana.Somepeoplearemorepowerfulinlife,moreinfluentialandfascinatingthanothers.Itisall
throughthisPrana,whichtheYoginusesconsciouslybythecommandofhiswill.
HavingacquiredathoroughknowledgeoftheseatofNadisandoftheVayuswiththeirfunctions,oneshould
beginwiththepurificationofNadis.ApersonpossessedofYamaandNiyama,avoidingallcompany,having

finishedhiscourseofstudy,delightinginTruthandvirtues,havingconqueredhisanger,beingengagedin
theserviceofhisspiritualinstructorandwellinstructedinallthereligiouspractices,shouldgotoasecluded
placeforYogaAbhyasa.

NadiSuddhi(purificationofNadis)isanimportantmatterintheearlystageofYoga.Ifthereareimpurities
intheNadis,theascentofKundaliniintheSushumnaisseriouslyretarded.PurityintheNadisfacilitatesthe
ascentofKundalini.PranayamabringsaboutquickpurificationoftheNadis.NadiSuddhiisthebasisofYoga.
ItisthefoundationofYoga.ItisthefirstpartofYoga.
Justasyoucanstopalltheotherwheelsofthefactoryifyoucanstoptheimportantflywheeloftheengine,
soalsoifyoucanstopthefunctionsofallotherorgansofthebody,youcangetcontrolofthesubtle,
psychicPranabyrestrainingthebreath.ThatisthereasonwhyPranayamaisprescribedforcontrolling
Prana.

Pranaistheovercoatofthemind.IfyoucancontrolPrana,youcancontrolmindandVeeryaalso,because
Prana,VeeryaandmindareunderoneSambandha.Ifyoucancontrolmind,breathstopsbyitself.Prana
comesundercontrol.Justasyouhaveanervoussysteminthegrossphysicalbody,soalsothereisa
nervoussystemintheastralbody.ThenervoussystemofthephysicalbodyistheSthulaPrana.Thenervous
systemoftheastralbodyistheSukshmaPrana.ThereisintimateconnectionbetweenthesetwoPranas.
ThereisinteractionbetweenthesetwoPranas.
Bycontrollingtheactofbreathing,youcanefficientlycontrolallthevariousfunctionsinthebody.Youcan
veryeasilyandquicklycontrolanddevelopthebody,mindandsoul.Psychiccure,Telepathy,Television,
thoughtreadingandotherSiddhisaretheeffectsofthecontrolofPrana.TheprocessbywhichthePranais
controlledbyregulationofbreathistermedPranayama.ItisthroughPranayamathatyoucancontrolyour
circumstancesandcharacterandconsciouslyharmonisetheuniversalindividuallifewiththecosmiclife.
Pranayama
Tosuitthedifferentconstitutions,temperamentandpurpose,inPranayamatherearemanyvarietiesof
exercises,viz.,deepbreathingexercise,SukhaPurvaka(easycomfortable)Pranayamaduringwalking,
Pranayamaduringmeditation,Rhythmicalbreathing,Suryabheda,Ujjayi,Sitkari,Sitali,Bhastrika,Bhramari,
Murchha,Plavini,KevalaKumbhaka,etc.Ofalltheaboveexercisesonlythelasteightaredescribedinthe
HathaYogictexts.
NadiSuddhi
BeforecommencingthepracticeofPranayamahowever,youshouldcleantheNadis.Thenonlywillyou
derivethemaximumbenefitfromPranayama.ThecleansingoftheNadi(NadiSuddhi)iseitherSamanuor
Nirmanuthatis,withorwithouttheuseofBija.Accordingtothefirstform,theYogiinPadmasanaor
SiddhasanaoffershisprayerstotheGuruandmeditatesonhim.MeditatingonYang(y:)hedoesJapa
throughIdaoftheBija16times,KumbhakawithJapaoftheBija64times,andthenexhalationthroughthe
solarNadiandJapaofBija32times.FireisraisedfromManipuraandunitedwithPrithvi.Thenfollows
inhalationbythesolarNadiwiththeVahniBijaRang(r)16times,KumbhakawithJapaoftheBija64
times,followedbyexhalationthroughthelunarNadiandJapaoftheBija32times.Hethenmeditatesonthe
lunarbrilliance,gazingatthetipofthenose,andinhalesbyIdawithJapaoftheBijaThang(Y)16times.
KumbhakaisdonewiththeBijaVang(v:)64times.Hethinkshimselfasfloodedbynectar,andconsiders
thattheNadishavebeenwashed.HeexhalesbyPingalawithJapaoftheBijaLang(l:)32timesand
considershimselftherebyasstrengthened.
NowIwilltellyouafewimportantexercisesonly,thatareusefulinawakeningtheKundalini.
1.SukhaPurvaka
(EasyComfortablePranayama)

SitinPadmasanaorSiddhasana.Closetherightnostrilwithyourrightthumb.Inhale(Puraka)throughthe
leftnostriltillyoucount3Omsslowly.ImaginethatyouaredrawingthePranaalongwiththeatmospheric
air.Incourseofpractice,youwillactuallyfeelthatyouaredrawingPrana.Thenclosetheleftnostrilalso
withthelittleandringfingersofyourrighthand.Retainthebreathtillyoucount12Oms.Sendthecurrent
downtotheMuladharaChakra.FeelthatthenervecurrentisstrikingagainsttheMuladharaChakraand
awakeningKundalini.Removetherightthumbandexhalethroughtherightnostriltillyoucount6Oms.
Againinhalethroughtherightnostril,retainandexhalethroughtheleftnostrilasstatedabove.Allthe
abovesixprocessesconstituteonePranayama.Tostartwithdo6Pranayamasinthemorningand6inthe
evening.Graduallyincreaseitto20Pranayamasforeachsitting.Theratioofinhalation,retentionand
exhalationis1:4:2.YoushouldgraduallyincreasetheperiodofKumbhaka.
BecarefulindoingtheKumbhakaaslongasyoucancomfortablydo.Donotbeinahurry.Bepatient.
ContracttheanusanddoMulaBandhaalso.ConcentrateontheChakraandmeditateonKundalini.Thisisthe
mostimportantportionofthisexercise.InthisPranayama,deepconcentrationplaysavitalpartin
awakeningKundalini.Kundaliniwillbeawakenedquicklyifthedegreeofconcentrationisintenseandif
practisedregularly.
Thisexerciseremovesalldiseases,purifiestheNadis,steadiesthewanderingmind,improvesdigestionand
circulation,helpsBrahmacharya,andawakensKundalini.Alltheimpuritiesofthebodyarethrownout.
2.Bhastrika
Rapidsuccessionofforcibleexpulsionsisacharacteristicfeatureofthisexercise.Bhastrikameansbellows
inSanskrit.Justasablacksmithblowshisbellowsrapidly,soalsoyoushouldinhaleandexhalerapidly.Sit
inyourfavouriteAsana.Closethemouth.Inhaleandexhalequickly20timeslikethebellows.Constantly
dilateandcontractthechestasyouinhaleandexhale.WhenyoupractisethePranayamaahissingsoundis
produced.Youshouldstartwithforcibleexpulsionsofbreathfollowingoneanotherinrapidsuccession.After
20suchexpulsions,makeadeepinhalationandretainthebreathaslongasyoucancomfortablydoand
thenslowlyexhale.ThisisoneroundofBhastrika.
Beginwith10expulsionsforaroundandincreaseitgraduallyto20or25foraround.Theperiodof
Kumbhakaalsoshouldbegraduallyandcautiouslyincreased.Restawhileafteroneroundisoverandagain
beginthenextround.Do3roundsinthebeginningandafterduepractice,do20roundsinthemorningand
20intheevening.
AdvancedstudentsdothisPranayamaafterpartialclosingoftheglottis.Theydonotmakeapowerfulnoise
likethebeginners.Theycandoiteveninastandingposture.
Bhastrikaremovesinflammationofthethroat,increasesthegastricfire,destroysphlegmandalldiseasesof
thenoseandlungs,eradicatesAsthma,consumptionandotherdiseaseswhicharisefromtheexcessofwind,
bileandphlegm.Itgiveswarmthtothebody.ItisthemosteffectiveofallPranayamaexercises.Itenables
PranatobreakthroughthethreeGranthis.AlltheotherbenefitsofSukhaPurvakaPranayamaareobtained

inthisexercisealso.
3.Suryabheda
SitonPadmasanaorSiddhasana.Closetheeyes.Keeptheleftnostrilclosedwithyourrightringandlittle
fingers.Slowlyinhalewithoutmakinganysoundaslongasyoucandoitcomfortablythroughtheright
nostril.Thenclosetherightnostrilwithyourrightthumbandretainthebreathbyfirmlypressingthechin
againstthechest(JalandharaBandha).Holdthebreathtillperspirationoozesfromtherootsofthehair(hair
follicles).Thispointcannotbereachedattheveryoutset.YouwillhavetoincreasetheperiodofKumbhaka
gradually.ThisisthelimitofthesphereofpracticeofSuryabhedaKumbhaka.ReleasetheJalandhara
Bandha.Thenexhaleveryslowlywithoutmakinganysoundthroughtheleftnostrilwiththethumbclosing
therightnostril.

ThepracticeofSuryabhedaKumbhakadestroysdecayanddeathandawakensKundalini.
ThisPranayamashouldagainandagainbeperformed,asitpurifiesthebrainanddestroystheintestinal
worms.ItremovesthefourkindsofevilscausedbyVayuandcuresVata(rheumatism).Itcuresrhinitisand
varioussortsofneuralgia.Thewormsthatarefoundinthefrontalsinusesarealsodestroyed.
4.Ujjayi
SitinyourusualAsana.Closethemouth.Inhaleslowlythroughboththenostrilsinasmooth,uniform
manner.
Retainthebreathaslongasyoucandoitcomfortablyandthenexhaleslowlythroughtheleftnostrilby
closingtherightnostrilwithyourrightthumb.Expandthechestwhenyouinhale.Duringinhalationa
peculiarsoundisproducedowingtothepartialclosingofglottis.Thesoundproducedduringinhalation
shouldbeofamildanduniformpitch.Itshouldbecontinuousalso.ThisKumbhakamaybepractisedeven
whenwalkingorstanding.Insteadofexhalingthroughtheleftnostril,youcanexhaleslowlythroughboth
nostrils.
Thisremovestheheatinthehead.Thepractitionerbecomesverybeautiful.Thegastricfireisincreased.It
removesphlegminthethroat.Asthma,consumptionandallsortsofpulmonarydiseasesarecured.All
diseasesthatarisefromdeficientinhalationofoxygenanddiseasesoftheheartarecured.Allworksare
accomplishedbyUjjayiPranayama.Thepractitionerisneverattackedbydiseasesofphlegm,nerves,
enlargementofspleen,dyspepsia,dysentery,consumption,coughorfever.PerformUjjayitodestroydecay
anddeath.

5.Plavini
PracticeofthisPranayamademandsskillonthepartofthestudents.HewhopractisesthisPlavinicando
Jalastambhaandfloatonwaterforanylengthoftime,Mr.S,aYogicstudent,canfloatonwaterfortwelve
hoursatastretch.HewhopractisesthisPlaviniKumbhakacanliveonairanddispensewithfoodforsome
days.Thestudentactuallydrinksairslowlylikewaterandsendsittothestomach.Thestomachgetsbloated
abit.Ifyoutapthestomachwhenitisfilledwithair,youwillgetapeculiartympanic(air)sound.Gradual
practiceisnecessary.ThehelpofonewhoiswellversedinthisPranayama,isnecessary.Thestudentcan
fillupthestomachwithairbygradualbelching.Afterthepractice,theairshouldbecompletelytakenout.It
isdonebyUddiyanaBandhaandhiccough.
6.PranicHealing
ThosewhopractisePranayama,canimparttheirPranaforhealingmorbiddiseases.Theycanalsorecharge
themselveswithPranainnotimebypractisingKumbhaka.Neverthinkthatyouwillbedepletedofyour
Pranabydistributingittoothers.Themoreyouwillgive,themoreitwillflowtoyoufromthecosmicsource
(Hiranyagarbha).ThatisthelawofNature.Donotbecomeaniggard.Ifthereisarheumaticpatient,gently
shampoohislegswithyourhands.Whenyoudoshampooing(massage),doKumbhakaandimaginethatthe
Pranaisflowingfromyourhandstowardsyourpatient.ConnectyourselfwithHiranyagarbhaorthecosmic
Pranaandimaginethatthecosmicenergyisflowingthroughyourhandstowardsthepatient.Thepatientwill
atoncefeelwarmth,reliefandstrength.Youcancureheadache,intestinalcolicoranyotherdiseaseby
massageandbyyourmagnetictouch.Whenyoumassagetheliver,spleen,stomachoranyotherportionor
organofthebodyyoucanspeaktothecellsandgivethemorders:Ocells!Dischargeyourfunctions
properly.Icommandyoutodoso.Theywillobeyyourorders.Theytoohavegotsubconsciousintelligence.
RepeatyourMantrawhenyoupassyourPranatoothers.Tryafewcases.Youwillgaincompetence.Youcan
curescorpionstingalso.Gentlyshampoothelegandbringthepoisondown.
Youcanhaveextraordinarypowerofconcentration,strongwillandaperfectlyhealthy,strongbodyby
practisingPranayamaregularly.YouwillhavetodirectthePranaconsciouslytounhealthypartsofthebody.
Supposeyouhaveasluggishliver.SitonPadmasana.Closeyoureyes.DoSukhaPurvakaPranayama.
DirectthePranatotheregionoftheliver.Concentrateyourmindthere.Fixyourattentiontothatarea.
ImaginethatPranaisinterpenetratingallthetissuesandthecellsofthelobesoftheliveranddoingits
curative,regeneratingandconstructiveworkthere.Faith,imagination,attentionandinterestplayavery
importantpartincuringdiseasesbytakingPranatothediseasedareas.Duringexhalationimaginethatthe
morbidimpuritiesoftheliverarethrownout.Repeatthisprocess12timesinthemorningand12timesin
theevening.Sluggishnessofliverwillvanishinafewdays.Thisisadruglesstreatment.Thisisnaturecure.
YoucantakethePranatoanypartofthebodyduringthePranayamaandcureanykindofdisease,beit
acuteorchronic.Tryonceortwiceinhealingyourself.Yourconvictionswillgrowstronger.Whydoyoucry
liketheladywhoiscryingforgheewhenshehasbutterinherhand,whenyouhaveacheap,potent,easily
availableremedyoragentPranaatyourcommandatalltimes!Useitjudiciously.Whenyouadvancein
yourconcentrationandpractice,youcancuremanydiseasesbymeretouch.Intheadvancedstages,many
diseasesarecuredbymerewill.

7.DistantHealing
Thisisknownasabsenttreatmentalso.YoucantransmitPranathroughspacetoyourfriendwhoisliving
atadistance.Heshouldhaveareceptivementalattitude.Youmustfeelyourselfenrapport(indirect
relationandinsympathy)withthepeoplewhomyouhealwiththisDistantHealingmethod.
Youcanfixhoursofappointmentwiththemthroughcorrespondence.Youcanwritetothem:Getreadyat8
p.m.Haveareceptivementalattitude.Liedowninaneasychair.Closeyoureyes.Ishalltransmitmy
Prana.

thePrana.Practiserhythmicalbreathingalso.HaveamentalimagethatthePranaisleavingyourmind,
passingthroughspace,andisenteringthesystemofthepatient.ThePranatravelsunseenlikethewireless
(radio)wavesandflasheslikelightningacrossspace.ThePranathatiscolouredbythethoughtofthehealer
isprojectedoutside.YoucanrechargeyourselfwithPranabypractisingKumbhaka.Thisrequireslong,
steadyandregularpractice.
ImportanceOfPranayama
TamasandRajasconstitutethecoveringorveil.ThisveilisremovedbythepracticeofPranayama.Afterthe
veilisremoved,therealnatureofthesoulisrealised.TheChittaisbyitselfmadeupofSattvicparticles,
butitisenvelopedbyRajasandTamas,justasthefireisenvelopedbysmoke.Thereisnopurificatory
actiongreaterthanPranayama.Pranayamagivespurity,andthelightofknowledgeshines.TheKarmaof
theYogi,whichcoversupthediscriminativeknowledge,isannihilatedbythepracticeofPranayama.Bythe
magicpanoramaofdesire,theessence,whichisluminousbynature,iscoveredupandtheJivaorindividual
soulisdirectedtowardsvice.ThisKarmaoftheYogiwhichcoversuptheLightandbindshimtorepeated
births,becomesattenuatedbythepracticeofPranayamaeverymomentandisdestroyedeventually.
DharanasuchaYogyataManasah:ThemindbecomesfitforconcentrationYogaSutra(II53).Youwillbe
abletoconcentratethemindnicelyafterthisveilofthelighthasbeenremoved.Themindwillbequite
steadyliketheflameinawindlessplaceasthedisturbingenergyhasbeenremoved.ThewordPranayama
issometimesusedcollectivelyforinhalation,retentionandexhalationofbreathandsometimesforeachof
theseseverally.WhenthePranaVayumovesinAkasaTattva,thebreathingwillbelessened.Atthistimeit
willbeeasytostopthebreath.ThevelocityofthemindwillbeslowlylessenedbythePranayama.Itwill
induceVairagyaalso.
BenefitsOfPranayama
Thisbodybecomeslean,strongandhealthy.Toomuchfatisreduced.Thereislustreintheface.Eyes
sparklelikediamonds.Thepractitionerbecomesveryhandsome.Voicebecomessweetandmelodious.The
innerAnahatasoundsaredistinctlyheard.Thestudentisfreefromallsortsofdiseases.Hegetsestablished
inBrahmacharya.Semengetsfirmandsteady.TheJatharagni(gastricfire)isaugmented.Thestudent

becomessoperfectedinBrahmacharyathathismindwillnotbeshakenevenifafairytriestoembracehim.
Appetitebecomeskeen.Nadisarepurified.Vikshepaisremovedandthemindbecomesonepointed.Rajas
andTamasaredestroyed.ThemindispreparedforDharanaandDhyana.Theexcretionsbecomescanty.
Steadypracticearousestheinnerspiritualforceandbringsinspirituallight,happinessandpeaceofmind.It
makeshimanOordhvaretoYogi.Allpsychicpowersareobtained.Advancedstudentsonlywillgetallthe
benefits.
InstructionsOnPranayama
1.Earlymorning,answerthecallsofnatureandsitfortheYogicpractices.PractisePranayamainadry,
weltventilatedroom.Pranayamarequiresdeepconcentrationandattention.Donotkeepanyonebyyour
side.
2.BeforeyousitforPranayamapractice,thoroughlycleanthenostrils.Whenyoufinishthepractice,takea
cupofmilkorlighttiffinafter10minutes.
3.Strictlyavoidtoomuchtalking,eating,sleeping,mixingwithfriendsandexertion.Takealittlegheewith
ricewhenyoutakeyourmeals.ThiswilllubricatethebowelsandallowVayutomovedownwardsfreely.
4.SomepeopletwistthemusclesofthefacewhentheydoKumbhaka.Itshouldbeavoided.Itisalsoa
symptomtoindicatethattheyaregoingbeyondtheircapacity.Thismustbestrictlyavoided.Suchpeople
cannothavearegulatedRechakaandPuraka.
5.PranayamacanalsobeperformedassoonasyougetupfrombedandjustbeforeJapaandmeditation.It
willmakeyourbodylightandyouwillenjoythemeditation.Youmusthavearoutineaccordingtoyour
convenienceandtime.
6.Donotshakethebodyunnecessarily.Byshakingthebodyoftenthemindalsoisdisturbed.Donotscratch
thebodyeverynowandthen.TheAsanashouldbesteadyandasfirmasarockwhenyoudoPranayama,
Japaandmeditation.
7.Inalltheexercises,repeatRama,Siva,Gayatri,oranyotherMantra,merenumberoranyothertime
unitaccordingtoyourinclination.GayatriorOMisthebestforPranayama.Inthebeginningyoumust
observesometimeunitforPuraka,KumbhakaandRechaka.Thetimeunitandtheproperratiocomesby
itselfwhenyoudothePuraka,KumbhakaandRechakaaslongasyoucandothemcomfortably.Whenyou
haveadvancedinthepractice,youneednotcountorkeepanyunit.Youwillbenaturallyestablishedinthe
normalratiothroughforceofhabit.
8.Forsomedaysinthebeginningyoumustcountthenumberandseehowyouprogress.Intheadvanced
stages,youneednotdistractthemindincounting.Thelungswilltellyouwhenyouhavefinishedthe
requirednumber.
9.DonotperformthePranayamatillyouarefatigued.Theremustbealwaysjoyandexhilarationofspirit

duringandafterthepractice.Youshouldcomeoutofthepracticefullyinvigoratedandrefreshed.Donot
bindyourselfbytoomanyrules(Niyamas).
10.DonottakebathimmediatelyafterPranayamaisover.Takerestforhalfanhour.Ifyougetperspiration
duringthepractice,donotwipeitwithatowel.Rubitwithyourhand.Donotexposethebodytothechill
draughtsofairwhenyouperspire.
11.Alwaysinhaleandexhaleveryslowly.Donotmakeanysound.InPranayamaslikeBhastrikaand
Kapalabhati,youcanproduceamildorthelowestpossiblesound.
12.Youshouldnotexpectthebenefitsafterdoingitfor2or3minutesonlyforadayortwo.Atleastyou
musthave15minutesdailypracticeinthebeginningregularlyfordaystogether.Therewillbenouseifyou
jumpfromoneexercisetoanothereveryday.
13.PatanjalidoesnotlaymuchstressonthepracticeofdifferentkindsofPranayama.Hementions:Exhale
slowly,theninhaleandretainthebreath.Youwillgetasteadyandcalmmind.ItwasonlytheHathaYogins
