Danielle Circone
heads to state finals
in National American
Miss Pageant
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
Some may call it beginners
luck, but for Daniella Circone, 16,
of Medford, modeling was an
undiscovered talent.
In her first time participating
in a pageant, she has advanced to
the state finalist stage of the competition set for Aug. 16 and 17.
At first, I wasnt sure about
being in a pageant, Daniella
said. Then my mother and best
friend Kylie Taylor, along with
my high school, guided me to
enter and made me realize that
National American Miss is like
no other pageant around. Its very
down to earth and family friendly.
The National American Miss
Pageant System is the largest in
the nation. The focus of this organization is to create future leaders and equip them with realworld skills to make their dreams

left a wide path of destruction across much of South Jersey, leaving many without power.

The best dad anyone could wish for

Tori Sherrys dad

Medford resident Tori

created to help her
with a science lesson.

By TORI SHERRY
Special to The Sun
When my parents got divorced,
they decided to share me. I live
with my dad and grandparents
during the week and some weekends.
My dad is my hero and my very
best friend. I can talk to him
about everything and we share
hobbies together. We love movies,
fishing, music, animals, swimming and playing at the beach together.
When I need help in science,
my dad draws what I am learning
about on our driveway with colored chalk and makes a game out
of learning in a way with pictures. Because the pictures are so
cool, people who see it call him
Driveway Dad. I call him the best
dad any girl could wish for. He
has a big heart and he has me.

in our opinion

Happy Fourth of July

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

A quick look at world news a reminder of how fortunate we Americans are

rom all of us at Elauwit Media
to all of our loyal readers, we
wish you the happiest and
healthiest Fourth of July.
As rough as things may be at times
in our country our economy is still
recovering, race is still an issue, and
the Phillies cant seem to win a baseball game anymore things could be a
lot worse for us.
A quick glance at the world around
us reveals just how fortunate we are, as
Americans, to have the freedoms we
do. And lets face it, these freedoms we
often take for granted.
Imagine, for just a moment, what it
must be like to live in Syria.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in Iraq.

Independence Day 2015

We give thanks for all the liberties we
have as Americans. We give thanks for
the sacrifices our miliary continues to
make. We give thanks that we are
American.

Imagine what it must be like to live

in Egypt, where theres still instability
and a lack of confidence in the nations
parliament.
We live in a nation where, despite
our differences, we manage to co-exist
peacefully for the most part.
We live in a nation where our Congress and where the office of the president have functioned and survived for
239 years.
We live in a nation where, for the

most part, were free to do as we please.

This simply isnt the case in many
corners of the world.
Today, we give thanks for the liberties won for us hundreds of years ago.
We give thanks for the many women
and men who have made incredible
sacrifices to protect these freedoms in
battle in Afghanistan and Iraq and
countless other places abroad.
We remember their families who,
like they, have also made sacrifices by
saying goodbye so we can do things as
simple as having a barbecue sometime
this weekend.
Finally, we give thanks for all that
America is and stands for. It may not
be perfect, but a quick glance of the
news shows: life could be much worse.

If youve ever wanted to experience life
in the 18th and 19th centuries for an afternoon, the Medford Historical Society has
the event for you.
Every year, the Historical Society takes

Country Day provides an opportunity
for the Historical Society to display all its
unique intricacies and gives local children
the opportunity to experience what theyve
been learning about in history class.

Medford celebrates Independence Day

on July 2 at Freedom Park
Medford Celebrates Foundation, Inc. and Medford Township
have jointly announced plans to
stage, on Thursday, July 2, the
townships traditional Independence Day celebration and fireworks display. For the fourth
straight year, Medford Celebrates,
a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation
founded in 2011 to raise funds and
public support for major Medford
Township public events requiring
township services, has advised
the township that it has again solicited sufficient funds to enable
the township to stage the event at
no cost to the municipality.
A large share of the costs of
staging the event will be covered
by a substantial donation from
ShopRite of Medford, which will
gain serve as the presenting sponsor. We are fortunate to have received donations of varying sizes
by a number of local businesses
and individuals, but ShopRite has

really stepped up to help us out,

said Celebrates President Bob
Egan. We have also obtained
substantial
donations
from
YMCA Camp Ockanickon of
Medford, as the kids entertainment sponsor, and Columbia
Bank as the main stage sponsor.
In addition, legal services have
been donated by Archer & Greiner, P.C. and accounting services
by the firm of Padden Cooper
LLC. Other sponsors are Polymer
Solutions, Radwell International,
Inc., PJ Whelihans, Medford
Ford, Bob Meyer Communities,
and Century 21 Meyer Realty.
The 2015 Independence Day
Celebration will be held in Freedom Park on Thursday, July 2,
weather permitting. The park
will open at 6 p.m. and the fireworks show will begin at dusk,
approximately 9:15 pm. Friday,
July 3 is the rain date.
Columbia Bank has signed on

for this year, with a welcome donation that in and of itself will
make it possible for Celebrates to
fund the rental of a stage and
sound system and bring back
local teen rock band, No Commitment, which has played to widespread popular acclaim at the last
two years fireworks festivities.
The M-Town Jazz Ensemble and
the Medford School of Music will
also perform.
YMCA Camp Ockanickon of
Medford will also sponsor and
run a number of activities for
children aged 2-12.
In addition food, beverages and
novelties will be sold by local vendors and local companies will
man tents and tables to meet the
public and distribute literature
about their businesses in the
Business Expo area.

The farm museum was transformed from a storage barn for
the mill complex, with a wagon
shop occupying one side of it. It is
across the street from the mill
and includes numerous pieces of
equipment from the 19th century.
There will be a Civil War reenactment in which volunteers
demonstrate black powder rifles.
The action part of the Civil
War is always fun, Hines said.
Everyone always jumps when

they hear that first rifle go off.

There will also be a blacksmith
shop open, a print shop to demonstrate handbills, cooking presentations and a loom with weavers
showing people how to craft baskets.
As Hines acknowledged, it is
hard to find people with these
skills today, making this experience an even more unique one for
those who come to check it out.
Out of all the events the Medford Historical Society hosts, this
is the best opportunity to tour the
building because it will not be
covered in quilts like it was for
the quilt show and it will not be
mobbed with people like it will be

for the apple show.

It gives us the opportunity to
let the community know that we
are here and really showcase
what the Historical Society has,
Hines said.
Country Day will be held on
Sunday, July 12 from noon until 4
p.m. at Kirby's Mill. It will kick off
the building being open on Sunday afternoons from 1-4 p.m.
throughout the summer, ending
in August. It will be free admission, and visitors will have the opportunity to buy hot dogs, water
and ice-cold watermelon. For additional information on the event,

Donations sought for future events

DONATIONS
Continued from page 11
of all the sponsors, noting that
fund raising is becoming more
and more difficult. This year, we
have again obtained just enough
pledges to fund the fireworks and
pay our other operating expenses,
like advertising, website, insurance and government fees. Without the major contributions from
ShopRite, Camp Ockanickon and
Columbia Bank, we would not be
able to stage the event this year,

and we are in jeopardy of losing

the ability to do so in the future,
unless we find new sources of
revenue.
As a result, Medford Celebrates
is asking people who come to the
fireworks to make a donation.
Assistant to the Township
Manager Beth Portocalis explained, Admission is technically free, but if every family would
contribute even a dollar for each
family member who comes to
watch, we can help assure that we
can keep the fireworks going.
Egan said that, With approximately 25,000 to 35,000 people attending each year, a dollar a head

would not cover all the costs but

would give us a huge head start
on next year. We hope that people
understand that the township
cannot afford to stage these
events and that they will not
be possible without public support.
Donations can be made in person on the day of the event or on
Celebrates website at www.medfordcelebrates.org.
The Celebrates trustees ask
anyone interested in serving as a
Trustee or assisting with events
and activities to e-mail info@medfordcelebrates.org or call Egan at

a reality.
The program is based on
inner beauty, as well as poise and
presentation, Daniella said.
It offers an All-American spirit of fun for family and friends.
Emphasis is placed on the importance of gaining self-confidence
and learning new skills, such as
good attitudes about competition,
as well as setting and achieving
personal goals.
Contestants compete in four
categories, including formal wear
modeling, personal introduction,
interview and community service project.
National American Miss also
offers optional contests such as

the entire year.
the top model search, talent, actress and much more.
Pageants are held for girls ages
4 to 18, in five age groups.
I compete against my age division (16-18 years old). There are
about 100 of us, Daniella said.
All these girls are from New
Jersey.
My favorite part of competing
is meeting so many new people
from different parts of New Jersey, Daniella said. Also showing
off my secret love for big poofy
dresses.

award, the official crown and banner, a bouquet of roses and air
transportation to compete in the
national pageant at Disneyland in
California.
She has a great chance of representing the great state of New
Jersey for the entire year,
Daniellas mother Nina said. She
will also tour Hollywood.
Daniella expressed her gratitude toward the pageant and what
it meant to her to experience
making it this far, but she is not
interested in making this a
lifestyle.
The National American Miss
Pageant is a great experience to
have, but living or experiencing
the pageant life once is perfect for
me, Daniella said.
