A Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex

marriage across the nation was celebrated by
Shore area gay men and women Friday.
The justices ruled 5-4 that states cannot deny
gay men and lesbians the same marriage rights
enjoyed for thousands of years by opposite-sex
couples. Within days, if not hours, the decision
was expected to trigger same-sex marriages in
states that still ban the practice.
New Jersey has recognized same-sex marriages since October 2013. However, gay couples
that wed in the Garden State still faced hurdles

history with this issue, said Asbury Park Deputy
Mayor Amy Quinn, who was among the first to
wed in New Jersey when the state legalized sameSee MARRIAGE, Page 5A

the prison term on Michelle Heale, 46, a mother of
young twins, in a courtroom packed with her relatives

and friends along with those of Mason Hess, the 14month-old boy she was convicted of killing.
Heale was convicted of aggravated manslaughter
and child endangerment April 17 after a trial at which
prosecutors argued she violently shook young Mason,
causing him spinal and head injuries from which he
would never recover.
Some of the family and friends of Mason wore
green ribbons in the courtroom on Friday, signifying
