Magnetic Flux Leakage Procedure

1.0 Introduction

This procedure describes the magnetic Flux Leakage

method to be used by PETROMAINT personnel for the
inspection of ferro-magnetic materials, low alloy and
carbon steels.
Used for coated and uncoated ferromagnetic
materials
Used for tube and piping
Used to find unwelded areas of longitudinal weld
joints & evaluate the condition of materials, such
as storage tank floors corrosion or other forms of
degradation.

3.0 Qualification of personnel

All personnel carrying out magnetic flux leakage in

accordance with this procedure shall be documented
trained ,qualified and certified by the manufacturer to
perform MFL.

Equipment manufacturer/model:
MFE 2412 Mark II Stop-On-Defect Scanner

Sensor type:

A series of sensors are placed between the poles of

the magnetic bridge to detect the leakage fields

Scanning speed/speed range:

The scanning speed is a function of the drive motor
speed and is controlled via the drive control motor %
function button ,beginning the test with speed
percentage reads 50%.

Overlap:

Maximum coverage of the floor area is achieved with

overlapping scans on a plate by plate basis. Do not
attempt to pull, push, or drive the scanner over lap
welds as damage could occur.

Material thickness range and dimensions:

The Magnetic Bridge provides the necessary flux

levels to achieve saturation of the plate thickness to
be inspected. It is supported on four low rolling
resistance, durable wheels at each corner allowing
easy maneuverability of the scanning head.
Different plate thicknesses and coatings can be
accommodated by changing out the wheels up to 12
mm

Evaluation of indications
Surface conditioning:
can be coated
if not coated the surface shall be cleaned of all
loose scale and debris that could interfere with
the examination and movement of the scanner.
The surface should be sufficiently flat to minimize
excessive changes in lift-off and vibration.
Cleaning methods :
high pressure water blast
sand blast

Coating/sheet thickness : up to 12 mm
