AUXILIARIES
TURPENTINE
MINERAL SPIRITS
Turpentine is solvent made by distilling the resin obtained from the

branches of pine trees. It is used to thin oil paints. Being volatile, it
evaporates very easily and has no sheen. It is commonly used in combination with a variety of oils, such as linseed or poppy oil. Depending
on ones technique, viscosity and density can be adjusted by combining turpentine and oil in a ratio between 7:3 and 1:1.
A refined solvent obtained from petroleum, Mineral Spirits are used

to thin oil colors. When mixed with oil colors, Mineral Spirits evaporate quickly and give layers of color a mat finish. They are generally
combined with oils such as linseed or poppy oil in painting mediums.
Depending on the technique used, viscosity and density can be adjusted by combining the Mineral Spirits and oil in a ratio between 7:3
and 5:5.

POPPY OIL
Poppy Oil is refined from the poppy flower. It is a very slow drying
oil that will not cause yellowing overtime. Poppy Oil is useful when
a painter would like colors to remain wet for long periods of time, allowing increased work time.

SUNFLOWER OIL
Linseed Oil is made by refining the oil extracted from the seeds of the
flax plant. A highly useful, slow-drying medium, it offers excellent adhesiveness and gives oil paintings a distinctive coloring and a strong,
glossy film. It is commonly used in combination with turpentine or
mineral spirits, in a ratio ranging from 3:7 to 5:5. The viscosity and
density may be adjusted according to ones technique.
Made by refining sunflower seeds, Sunflower Oil is a high quality oil

used for painting. It possesses similar properties to poppy oil and
dries less yellow than linseed oil, keeping discoloration to a minimum. Like other oils it imparts the gloss that is a distinctive characteristic of many oil paintings, enhancing color. It is commonly used in
combination with solvents such as turpentine or Mineral Spirits. Depending on ones technique, viscosity and density may be adjusted
by blending Sunflower Oil and solvent in a ratio between 3:7 and 5:5.
STANDING OIL
PAINTING POPPY OIL
Stand Oil is a synthetic oil resistant to yellowing over time.
Painting Poppy Oil is a painting medium made of Mineral Spirits and

Poppy Oil. This convenient medium allows painters to have the nonyellowing, slow-drying qualities of Poppy Oil in a low-viscosity form.

AUXILIARIES
GEL MEDIUM
When mixed with acrylic colors, Gel Medium provides a translucent effect.
Being viscous, the drying rate is much slower than other acrylic media. Its
strong adhesiveness enables materials such as wood or paper to be applied to the painting surfaces as collage. Gel Medium offers shine, just like
Gloss Medium, and can be applied thickly with a painting knife or brush,
as with oil paintings. When using modeling paste, blend it in a ratio of one
part Gel Medium to two parts modeling paste to ensure an even texture
resistant to cracking.
GLOSS MEDIUM
Gloss Medium enhances brightness and sheen. To create a glossy finish, blend a small amount of this medium with acrylic color. Use larger
amounts to achieve a transparent colored wash. If you apply Gloss Medium over top of an acrylic painting, it will dry completely transparent,
though it may appear hazy before it completely dries.
MATTE MIDIUM
Matte Medium reduces sheen when mixed with acrylic colors. It can be used
together with a Gloss Medium to create a semi-gloss surface.

ACRYLIC GESSO
Acrylic Gesso is exclusively used as a painting ground. It can be applied to a variety of surfaces, such as canvas,
brick, cement walls, wood, or hardboard panels. It intensifies the colors of paints and dries quickly. Upon drying,
Acrylic Gesso prevents any subsequent changes in quality. It can be mixed with sand or ground shells for textural
effects. Acrylic Gesso can be used as a primer not only for acrylic colors, but for oil colors, gouache and pencil as
well.
REMOVER
Although acrylic colors are water-based, they are difficult to remove once they are
completely dry. A Remover is for removing acrylic colors that have hardened.

ShinHan Painting Glue for Professionals is a medium intended for use in color mixing. A water based glue processed
from liquefied gelatin, it is used for painting thickly on hanji, traditional Korean paper handmade from mulberry trees.
Its transparency is very important in protecting the chroma and value of colors mixtures. To ensure the preservation
of an artwork, combine one part glue with one part water when using the following colors (White, Yellow Light, Burnt
Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Opal Green, Ultramarine Blue, Light Blue Violet, Orange, Lemon Yellow Pale and Raw Sienna) For
other colors, mix one part glue with two parts water.

Product development
The use of hazardous raw materials is rationed as much as possible when ShinHanart manufactures its products. A continueous insight
into the hamfulness of raw materials makes ShinHanart products harmless at maximum. Unless its possible or undesirable to replace
a certain hazardous substance, then a safty label is given to the related products. In this way, our customer is informed of how to work
with the product out of harms way.
Safety Data Sheet

The Safty label on packages is not the only one in order to notify users of the properties of ShinHanart products. ShinHanart, the largest
Art Materials manufacturer in Korea, is obliged to provide customers with the safety Data Sheet for each product that contains hazardous
components. As well, for the products that do not include hazardous substances, those sheets are available. The document explains
how to use our products safely to customers. The safety Data Sheets can be downloaded via our website, www.shinhanart.com
United States
A regulation that only applies solely to the United States is that coloring materials for artists have to be screened in accordance with
the ASTM D4236. This norm has been included in American legislation and describes the way a product is assessed to determine
whether it poses a danger to health. The packaging of such products should be supplied with a Conformance Statement which indicates
that the product meets this norm.
ShinHanart is a member of the Art & Creative Materials Institue (ACMI). As part of the certification programme of this insititue, ShinHanart
products are examined by a toxicologist according to the above ASTM D4236 norm.
ShinHanart products have one of the the following ACMI seals. The Confirmance Statement is added below those seals.
AP
Products with the AP seal, Approved Product are certifiled as being non-hazardous
CL
Products with the CL seal, Cautionary Labelling comes with a warning.
This product can be used safely with the safely recommendations followed
Heath Label
This seal was the predecessor of the above two ones to show that the products were certified
by the ACMI. Any additional recommendation would outline whether this concerned a safe or
a hazardous product.
