LETTER FROM THE TE
magazine
We at Natures Pathways spend a lot of time pooling our local resources
to provide information to help you prepare for a healthy future. Experts
provide great recipes, fitness tips, ideas to keep your finances on track and
much more. Its exciting to think about how we can shape our lives in such
a positive way by simply thinking about what we want our future to be.
When it comes to this month and the Fourth of July, we cant help but
look to the past and think about what those before us thought about their
future and the future of our country.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Fourth of July has been a federal holiday since 1941. Though that may
seem like a long time for the country to wait to celebrate the independence
it declared in 1776, the tradition of the Fourth of July, often referred to as
Independence Day, dates back to the dawn of the American Revolution
and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the dawn of American
independence, and celebrations that included fireworks and parades can
be traced back to the 18th century. On July 4, 1777, the city of Philadelphia, which would become the first capital of the United States of
America, held the first annual commemoration of American independence, and exactly one year later George Washington ordered that all of
his soldiers be offered double rations of rum to commemorate the anniversary. (MetroCreative Connection)
We hope you also enjoy and celebrate all July has to offer while
looking to both the past and the future!

How to get rid of
your hot flashes and
hormonal imbalances
...................................................
By Randi Mann, NP
f you are a woman in your late 30s or 40s you may begin to
experience a whole new set of hormonal symptoms as you
begin the gradual transition between your reproductive
years and menopause (the cessation of menstrual periods) called
perimenopause. For most women this transition can last many
years and can be associated with some unpleasant changes such
as shorter menstrual intervals or irregular menses, night sweats,
moodiness, anxiety, insomnia, weight gain, fatigue, low sex drive
and other symptoms. For some women, these symptoms are troublesome enough to warrant medical help and it may make sense
to get tested for other causes of symptoms that can mimic perimenopause, such as thyroid disease.
Menopause is a normal, natural event. Its defined as the final
menstrual period and is confirmed when a woman has not had
her period for 12 consecutive months. Women in the U.S. will
likely experience natural menopause between ages 40 and 58,
averaging around age 51. Some women, however, reach this phase
in their 30s, others in their 60s. Typically, women reach menopause around the same time as their mothers and sisters.
Menopause, whether natural or induced (i.e. after surgical
removal of the uterus), is called premature when it happens at or
before age 40 and happens to approximately 1 percent of women
in the United States. Premature menopause that is not induced
can be genetic, metabolic, autoimmune, or the result of other
poorly understood conditions. Should a woman reach menopause
before age 40 the cause should be evaluated by a womans medical

ats are considered great pets for city dwellers. Unlike dogs,
cats dont bark, meaning apartment dwellers wont have to
worry about upsetting their neighbors when cats want to
grab their attention. Cats also can live indoors without needing to
get any exercise in the backyards that many city residents simply
dont have.
But some city dwellers, whether theyre allergic to cats or simply
people who prefer the company of dogs, insist on canines over
felines. Thats perfectly understandable, but city dwellers looking
to add mans best friend to their living arrangements should
consider a host of factors before bringing a dog home.
Size
Recycle More
Landfill Less
Save energy
14
Conserve resources
Prevent pollution
Create jobs
www.naturespathways.com
Demeanor
A dogs demeanor also must be a consideration for city dwellers thinking of bringing a dog into their homes. Cities are more
crowded, so dogs that live in the city will be exposed to strangers and other dogs more often than dogs living in more remote
and less crowded places. In addition, many city dwellers take their
dogs to dog parks, where dogs will inevitably interact with other
dogs. City dwellers should avoid dogs that are not comfortable
around strangers or other dogs so they can reduce the risk of
confrontation or other incidents.
Attention
City dwellers tend to spend less time at home than men and
women who live in the suburbs, as one of the draws of city living
is the accessibility of local culture, restaurants and attractions. So
city dwellers looking for dogs should look for dogs that dont need
excessive amounts of attention. But its important that men and
women who live in cities recognize that even the most independent dogs need daily attention. Men and women who cant give
that attention should consider pets that require less of a time
commitment.
So which dogs thrive in cities? Unfortunately, there are no guarantees when it comes to dogs and cities. Still, the following are a
handful of breeds that might make great pets for city dwellers.
Chihuahua: Chihuahuas sometimes have more fight in them
than city dwellers would prefer, but socialization issues can typically be overcome early in the dogs life if its owners commit to
helping the animal get along with other dogs. Chihuahuas tend to
be laid back dogs that can happily handle apartment life, as their
small stature does not require much space.
Dachsund: Dachsunds are playful dogs that can easily adapt
to small living spaces. Dachsunds can pack on the pounds rather
quickly, so city dwellers who want dachsunds should be ready to
take them for daily walks and monitor their eating habits.
French bulldog: Small in stature, French bulldogs boast laid
back temperaments, making them ideal for city dwellers looking
for a dog to relax with at the end of the day as opposed to a dog
who wants to play frisbee in the park. French bulldogs also tend to
be affectionate, meaning they are unlikely to encounter problems
on walks through the neighborhood.
Pug: Pugs are affectionate dogs that like attention from their
owners. They enjoy going on walks, but they also dont mind
spending time indoors with their owners. Their size makes them
ideal for apartments, as they dont take up much space. Apartment
dwellers considering pugs should know that pugs are short-nosed
dogs and can suffer from impaired breathing on hot days. That
situation is easily remedied with air conditioning, which is a must
for city-dwelling pug owners.
Dog loving city dwellers dont have to abandon their attempts at
owning dogs just because their apartments are small and their
neighbors are nearby. But it behooves both owner and dog for
potential dog owners to do their homework before bringing dogs
into their lives.

By The Nutrishop Athlete Team
s of late, there has been a lot of research into the potentially harmful chemicals and additives that not only show
up in our foods, but in our environment. Sure, its impossible to be 100 percent clear of these items in your diet but what
about cooking methods, utensils and the basic environment we
live in? These are all areas where we as health conscious individuals can be more aware of what we are actually allowing into our
bodies. Paying a little more attention to what we consume may
very well extend, or improve, your quality of life.
Several of the experts who are researching this firsthand basically say its not just what you eat, but how you cook it, and what
you cook it in that matters. The containers, our air, what goes on
our skin, and more! What about your bug repellant? Yes, I know
what you are saying, its just too overwhelming; were doomed,
right? Well not exactly, theres hope! We might never be 100
percent free of potentially harmful man-made chemicals, but you
can start by checking out this useful list below for tips on making
your lifestyle a little more chemical free.

fibromyalgia
.............................................................
By Christine Vander Bloomen
ibromyalgia is often a devastating and unpredictable condition that causes pain and impacts life by interfering with the
ability to do the little things in life that most of us take for
granted. It is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain,
fatigue and sleep problems. Sufferers describe it as a constant dull
ache, which usually is muscle related. Women are more likely
to develop it than men by a ratio of 9:1 and overall 2 percent of
the population is affected. Floatation therapy has been found to
reduce pain, increase relaxation and decrease stress levels in those
suffering from fibromyalgia.
Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way the brain processes pain signals. Those
suffering with fibromyalgia are often told by their doctor to increase
exercise, partake in relaxation type activities and to reduce stress.

Topical use
Before using oils topically, take care to investigate if the oil or oil
blend you plan to use requires the use of a carrier oil (such as
fractionated grape seed, olive or coconut oil). Essential oils are
absorbed quickly and easily by the skin so they can be irritating if
not used appropriately; however, quick absorption also provides
quick relief. Calming, restorative and disinfecting are a few main
properties of essential oils used on the skin. They also make
wonderful cleaning agents for sweaty, stinky yoga mats!
Suggestion: Try using a few drops of peppermint oil on the chest
before your practice to open the airways, or use after your practice
to ease sore muscles. Mix several drops of melaleuca and lavender
oil with 4 to 6 ozs. of water to mist on your mat after use just
wipe off with a towel.
Internal use
Aromatic use
Diffusing essential oils into the air provides a stimulating and motivating environment for the movement and connection of yoga. The
www.naturespathways.com
sense of smell is very strong and some individuals are very sensitive
to the incense and candles used at some yoga studios. Essential oils
for aromatherapy are a more subtle way to cleanse and purify the
air, enhance breathing and still remain gentle to sensitive noses.
Suggestion: Diffuse lavender or lemongrass oil in your practice
space to create a calming environment. Use wild orange to create
a more invigorating space.
No matter the vehicle or method in which you use essential oil,
quality matters. Many oils on the market are not 100 percent pure
and may be diluted, contain fillers or contain synthetic substitutes. Use only 100 percent pure therapeutic-grade essential oils
to ensure safety and to obtain the most benefit from the oils.
I have only touched on a few of the applications of essential oils.
With many single oils and blends to choose from, the options are
endless to integrate essential oils into your yoga journey to create
alignment and balance for health of mind, body and spirit.

The NEW Dermatology Group
the
By Grace Olson
What was perhaps once almost debilitating to a teenager becomes very manageable
as an adult and no longer carries that stigma or that sense of self-consciousness that
people might otherwise have if their skin condition isnt well controlled, Dr. Lewis says.
Have you
considered seeing
a dermatologist?
The NEW Dermatology Group is seeing a rapid increase in the prevalence of skin cancer
cases, including melanoma and basal cell carcinoma.
As a rule, we encourage people to take care of their skin by protecting it from external damage, Dr. Lewis says. So thats mainly damage from sunlight and tobacco, and
you accomplish that by using sunscreen and avoiding getting sunburns.
While in the past skin cancer cases occurred primarily in older adults, times have
changed. Dr. Lewis says the risk is largely tied to two things: the total amount of sun
damage accrued over ones lifetime and the exposure to tanning beds.
Suggestions to lower the risk include avoiding intense periods of sun exposure and
wearing sunscreen. The standard recommendation from the American Academy of
Dermatology is to wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or greater
and protective clothing whenever possible. Dr. Lewis also adds that its important to
note that most sunscreens are effective for only 2-hour intervals, and even shorter
periods of time when spent in water.
Mohs micrographic surgery, a skin cancer removal technique, is one of Dr. Lewiss
most effective tools in his mission to not only remove skin cancer typically basal cell
carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and a subtype of melanoma occurring on the
head and neck but to also help his patients return to their quality of life.
A very specialized procedure, Mohs surgery is generally used for treating skin cancer
that arises in cosmetically sensitive areas and where theres an importance to sparing
as much tissue as possible. Its a technique that requires sub-specialty training beyond
a dermatology residency. A well-trained Mohs surgeon, like Dr. Lewis, is not only skilled
at removing the skin cancer, but also in the reconstruction that follows.
It is very much an art form where the primary goal is to restore form and functionality in the most cosmetically appealing way, he says. Its a very important part of the
procedure, and is equally important to accuracy in removing the skin cancer with a 98
percent cure rate.
True to his dedication to helping patients live the quality of life they deserve, Dr.
Lewis is the only Mohs surgeon in Northeast Wisconsin who routinely performs both
portions of the surgery in the same session for melanoma arising on the face and
neck. The removal of the skin cancer and the reconstruction occur in the same day.
Its important to him for several reasons, one being the comfort and recovery of the
patient.
It can be difficult for patients to go through a process that is dragged out over days
because theres surgical pain, and it can be hard for them, with a big bandage in a
very prominent spot to feel like going out and doing things. I want them to be able to
as soon as they can, he says. The recovery is also significantly shorter because the
healing gets started a lot quicker.
Being able to provide the benefits of both portions of Mohs surgery for melanoma
on the face and neck in the same session is a skill he was taught during his training, an
experience he couldnt be more thankful for.
Im particularly proud of the cosmetic outcomes of my reconstructions. I was taught
by some amazing surgeons at the Mayo Clinic and I feel really fortunate because of
the quality of that training.
Dr. Lewis is grateful for his past, but is also excited about the future growth of The
NEW Dermatology Group. But not in the typical sense.
My goal is to maintain a small, family-oriented practice where patients are known
on a first name basis, he says. I want there to be a comfort level and familiarity a
small practice that is very attentive to individual patients is the goal.

Uncover the
riddle of how
amazing
we are
.............................................................................
By Sharon Paprocki, MAC, LPC, NBCC
One is what we are aware of, or consciousness, and the other is the
much larger part, our subconscious.
Scientists tell us that even in the womb we have the ability to
take in information. This information is taken in at a primal level:
safe or unsafe, pain or pleasure, love or fear. We are told that as
infants and toddlers we are recording information long before we
have the ability to cognitively retrieve and use it. In other words, we
are great recorders but not such great interpreters. These imprinted
memories along with generational patterns, dogmas, experiences
and much more are all a part of what makes up the subconscious.
Much of what is in our conscious and subconscious is supportive to our living the amazing life we deserve. Yet most of us have
some area of our life whether it is money, relationships, health,
weight, career, our emotional well-being or some pattern we see
repeating that we would love to improve on or be free from. It is
in these areas that like those majestic horses we are most likely
wearing blinders and we need to be willing to take the blinders off
and check out just what is influencing us both in our conscious
and subconscious minds.
In my practice I get to work with people as they explore information about themselves that up until their setting the intention
to take the blinders off had been flying under their radar in their

Smits had such success with his method that he began training
and certifying homeopaths and medical professionals throughout

CEASE begins with the application of a homeopathic remedy
tailored to the specific symptom picture of the person. The
homeopathic remedy is given to support the vital energetic
healing system of the person to bring about improvement in
energy, mood and experiences. If and when necessary, detoxification of toxins or environmental blocks is added to the process.
Detoxification is done through homeopathy and isotherapy (a
form of homeopathy).
Homeopathy is tailored to the specific experience of each client.
Therefore, two people with autism seeking homeopathic care would
not necessarily receive the same remedy. The common attributes

to add air space and cover food scraps. Too much nitrogen would
be from a pile made out of all grass clippings, food scraps and
plant material. Remember that a backyard compost pile should
NOT have an equal ratio of carbon (browns) to nitrogen (green).
Three parts carbon to one part nitrogen is suggested. If the pile is
so wet that water drips out when a handful is squeezed, then dry
carbon material such as woodchips, leaves or soil will help the
pile dry out along with balancing out the carbon to nitrogen ratio
of the pile. Regardless of what nitrogen is used in a pile, it should
always be covered by a carbon as the top layer.

How to sneak
fruits and
vegetables
into any
recipe
plate with vegetables, one quarter with meat and the remainder with a whole grain.
Replace lettuce on a sandwich or burger with a fresh leaf of
spinach. While youre dressing your sandwich, add a slice of
tomato, too.
Substitute fresh vegetables and fruit slices for chips when
serving dips and salsas. Kale chips are growing in popularity.
Give children a cup of sliced grapes with their lunches as a
refreshing and healthy snack.
Shred vegetables into a hearty slaw and top it with a vinaigrette or a typical mayonnaise-based dressing.
Blend other vegetables into your pasta sauce.
Use vegetables instead of pasta in traditional dishes. Layer
eggplant slices to make a lasagna. Or use a spiral slicer to slice
zucchini or carrots when making homemade noodles.
Fruit salad is often a refreshing snack or dessert. Having fruit
already diced in a large bowl makes it more convenient to eat
and possibly more enticing to children.
Make a vegetable roll-up, filling pizza dough with broccoli or
spinach and shredded cheese.
Mix together an avocado, cup of cocoa powder and cup
honey to create a healthy alternative to chocolate pudding.
Use pureed vegetables to thicken cheese sauce for macaroni
and cheese recipes.
Shred vegetables and add them to beaten eggs for omelets or
scrambles.

Tips for
perfectly
grilled
vegetables
...................................................
ne of the highlights of the summer season is the incredible bounty of fresh produce, and grilling these vegetables gives them a smoky, delicious dimension. Chef BBQ
Naz, a grilling expert from Broil King, shares some simple tips for
flavor perfection.
When preparing vegetables, slice them to expose as much of
the vegetable to the grill surface as you can.
Coat vegetables with olive oil before placing them on the grill.
This will help prevent them from sticking to the grill.
Use the right tool for the job. Accessories like grill toppers
and skewers are perfect for keeping smaller foods like cherry
tomatoes and onions from rolling around or falling through
the grate.
Dont leave vegetables unattended. Vegetables are delicate and
can easily overcook if not monitored.
Grill extras. Leftover grilled vegetables are great in soups,
salads, sandwiches and on pizzas and pasta.
