July 2015 | Natures Pathways

A
LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine
We at Natures Pathways spend a lot of time pooling our local resources
to provide information to help you prepare for a healthy future. Experts
provide great recipes, fitness tips, ideas to keep your finances on track and
much more. Its exciting to think about how we can shape our lives in such
a positive way by simply thinking about what we want our future to be.
When it comes to this month and the Fourth of July, we cant help but
look to the past and think about what those before us thought about their
future and the future of our country.
DID YOU KNOW?

The Fourth of July has been a federal holiday since 1941. Though that may
seem like a long time for the country to wait to celebrate the independence
it declared in 1776, the tradition of the Fourth of July, often referred to as
Independence Day, dates back to the dawn of the American Revolution
and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the dawn of American
independence, and celebrations that included fireworks and parades can
be traced back to the 18th century. On July 4, 1777, the city of Philadelphia, which would become the first capital of the United States of
America, held the first annual commemoration of American independence, and exactly one year later George Washington ordered that all of
his soldiers be offered double rations of rum to commemorate the anniversary. (MetroCreative Connection)
We hope you also enjoy and celebrate all July has to offer while
looking to both the past and the future!

Is it hot in
here or is
it me?
How to get rid of
your hot flashes and
hormonal imbalances
...................................................
By Randi Mann, NP

f you are a woman in your late 30s or 40s you may begin to
experience a whole new set of hormonal symptoms as you
begin the gradual transition between your reproductive
years and menopause (the cessation of menstrual periods) called
perimenopause. For most women this transition can last many
years and can be associated with some unpleasant changes such
as shorter menstrual intervals or irregular menses, night sweats,
moodiness, anxiety, insomnia, weight gain, fatigue, low sex drive
and other symptoms. For some women, these symptoms are troublesome enough to warrant medical help and it may make sense
to get tested for other causes of symptoms that can mimic perimenopause, such as thyroid disease.
Menopause is a normal, natural event. Its defined as the final
menstrual period and is confirmed when a woman has not had
her period for 12 consecutive months. Women in the U.S. will
likely experience natural menopause between ages 40 and 58,
averaging around age 51. Some women, however, reach this phase
in their 30s, others in their 60s. Typically, women reach menopause around the same time as their mothers and sisters.
Menopause, whether natural or induced (i.e. after surgical
removal of the uterus), is called premature when it happens at or
before age 40 and happens to approximately 1 percent of women
in the United States. Premature menopause that is not induced
can be genetic, metabolic, autoimmune, or the result of other
poorly understood conditions. Should a woman reach menopause
before age 40 the cause should be evaluated by a womans medical

provider as she is at higher risk for osteoporosis, heart disease
and sexual dysfunction due to the decrease in levels of the female
hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.
The most common and recognizable menopause-related
symptom is called a hot flash. Hot flashes are thought to be due to
changes in the gland that regulated the bodys temperature called
the hypothalamus gland. If this gland detects that a woman is too
hot it begins a series of events to help lower her temperature. Her
blood vessels close to the surface of her skin dilate to increase
blood flow to her skin to help release some body heat. This may
cause a reddening of the face and neck for some women. She may
also begin to sweat to help cool her body down. She may have an
increased heart rate and a few women may also feel anxiety or
nausea. She may feel a chill after a hot flash. If the same mechanism is at play during the night she may experience night sweats.
If she wakes up in time to throw off the covers, she may avoid
www.naturespathways.com

actually breaking out in a sweat.

Studies tell us that the duration of hot flash episodes can be
as brief as 6 months or last as long as 10 years or more. A small
number of women will have hot flashes daily for the rest of their
lives without treatment. If your hot flashes are mild to moderate in
intensity you may find relief by changing your lifestyle.

Recommended lifestyle changes

Exercise several times per week to reduce stress and improve

sleep (may be too stimulating within 3 hours of bedtime)

Avoid hot rooms, hot foods and drink, alcohol, caffeine,

excessive stress and smoking

Practice formal relaxation with meditation, yoga, prayer or

massage

Dress in lightweight fabrics and layers that are easy to remove

and put back on

Moving air can be very helpful in the form of a ceiling fan,

desk top or bedside fan

Topical sprays and gels that are cooling can be helpful as can

sleeping on the Chillow pillow

Try slow paced respiration a slow, deep breath deep from

your belly 5-7 times in a minute to abate or lessen the hot

flash
Non-prescription remedies like one to two servings of soy
(tofu, soy milk, roasted soy nuts) may be helpful (but not
advised if you have a thyroid condition)
Herbs such as black cohosh (one brand name is Remifemin)

and a rhubarb supplement (brand name Estrovera) have been

helpful to many women.
Prescription hormone therapy with estrogen is the most effective
treatment for hot flashes and night sweats. Studies have shown that
the benefits outweigh the risks for most healthy women under age
60 with moderate to severe hot flashes. Female hormone therapy
offers both symptom alleviation and long-term benefits. Standardized dosed synthetic and bio-identical hormones and customized
bio-identical hormones may be offered and hormone testing can
help guide initial treatment and follow up care.
It is highly recommended that women seek hormone treatment
from a knowledgeable health care provider who is a North American Menopause Society (NAMS) Certified Menopause Practitioner
and who understands your symptoms and appropriate individualized treatment options for you. If hormone symptoms are getting
you down please seek help you will be so glad you did!
Randi Mann, WHNP-BC, NCMP, is a board-certified Womens
Health Nurse Practitioner, NAMS Certified Menopause Practitioner
and is the owner of Wise Woman Wellness, LLC, an innovative, wellness and hormone center in De Pere. She is a holistic minded provider
offering natural treatments and prescription medications for thyroid
and hormonal imbalances including customized dosed, bioidentical hormones.
She combines the best of conventional, functional and integrative medicine
to help women. Attend the introductory End Hormone Havoc Stay Sane,

Healthy in
spirit: Finding
inner
strength
......................................................................
By Rev. April Kain-Breese

ow strong are you? How much

weight can you lift without pulling
something out of alignment
permanently? At one time, I had crazy
strength because I worked in a grocery store
where we regularly lifted big bags of water
softener salt, dog food, and other large and
bulky items. In fact, I think I actually startled
my father-in-law-to-be one day when I tried
out the family barbell set and bench pressed
100 lbs! I couldnt do that today, for sure.
But, in the intervening years, Ive needed
a different kind of strength far more than
Ive needed a muscular torso and arms.
Life has demanded inner strength, and

lots of it! Maybe thats true for you also?

Honestly, I think that happens for all of us
as we mature.
The good news is that we have tremendous reserves of inner strength that we can
access when the going gets tough. Its what
gets us through illness, loss, depression
and anxiety! There is no real measuring
device for this strength, but its there when
we need it. In fact, we are born with it!
The most important key to finding and
using this strength is to try it out. Begin
by believing that you have it, and then
put it into practice. It really is like riding
a two-wheel bike for the first time. Do you

remember how you had to believe that you

could do it? As long as you doubted, you
waivered and wobbled, you watched your
handlebars and the concrete right beneath
you, and you ultimately slowed down and
toppled. But, once you looked forward,
and focused on where you wanted to go,
you built up a bit of momentum, and you
found that you really could do it! You had
it in you all along you just needed to
experience it for yourself.
If you are facing something big today,
something that just feels insurmountable, I encourage you to think back to
all of the things you have learned to do,

A community for

Positive perspectives for daily living.

the circumstances you have overcome.

Remember what youve come through
already, and then tell yourself that you can
deal with this latest thing, too.
There is an energy, a consciousness that
empowers us to get through anything. It is
the power that creates, loves and breathes
us. It is the essence that exists in every form
of life. It is not visible, but it is present, and
you really can turn within to find it inside of
you! When we allow this energy to move and
express itself, we are lifted up in mind, body
and spirit. Its there, and its waiting for you
to call upon it. You might call it your Higher
Self, or your Higher Power, God, Spirit,
Universal Life Force, or any other name. It is
there, no matter what you call it, even if you
arent aware of it but Ill bet that somewhere inside of you, you are already aware of
it. Its the something that causes you to call
a friend at just the right moment, to take an
unusual route to work and discover something unexpected, and its the something that
will get you through everything.
This inner power is not mysterious, not
something or someone far away. It is in you
and all around you all the time. There is no
need to pray certain prayers or do certain
rituals. All you need to do is turn within,
open your heart and mind, ask for guidance, and listen. I know this is true, because
it works for me and many thousands of
people every day. Do you remember the
phrase The still small voice? Thats what
I hear, except its not a separate voice
really, it comes through my own thoughts.
Its sometimes a niggling reminder, sometimes a recollection of a past challenge well
met, sometimes a hunch. The great thing
is that you dont have to spend a lot of time
trying to define it, label it, or put it into a
category. Just try it. Youll love it because
its part of you. Nothing alien, nothing
scary, just finding new depth within yourself and allowing it to come to light. I wish
you great joy as you discover and activate
your inner strength!

Tips for city

dwellers
looking for
the perfect
pooch
...........................................................

ats are considered great pets for city dwellers. Unlike dogs,
cats dont bark, meaning apartment dwellers wont have to
worry about upsetting their neighbors when cats want to
grab their attention. Cats also can live indoors without needing to
get any exercise in the backyards that many city residents simply
dont have.
But some city dwellers, whether theyre allergic to cats or simply
people who prefer the company of dogs, insist on canines over
felines. Thats perfectly understandable, but city dwellers looking
to add mans best friend to their living arrangements should
consider a host of factors before bringing a dog home.

Size

City dwellers typically live in apartments or townhouses, and

such living spaces are rarely as large as the private single-family

homes found in the suburbs. Smaller living spaces can begin to

feel cramped if a large dog is added to the equation, and large dogs
may suffer both mentally and physically if they are not afforded
lots of room to roam. Before bringing a dog home, men and
women living in cities should consider how much space they have
available for dogs, recognizing that the less space they have, the
better off everyone, Fido included, might be with a smaller dog.

Demeanor

A dogs demeanor also must be a consideration for city dwellers thinking of bringing a dog into their homes. Cities are more
crowded, so dogs that live in the city will be exposed to strangers and other dogs more often than dogs living in more remote
and less crowded places. In addition, many city dwellers take their
dogs to dog parks, where dogs will inevitably interact with other
dogs. City dwellers should avoid dogs that are not comfortable
around strangers or other dogs so they can reduce the risk of
confrontation or other incidents.

Attention

City dwellers tend to spend less time at home than men and
women who live in the suburbs, as one of the draws of city living
is the accessibility of local culture, restaurants and attractions. So
city dwellers looking for dogs should look for dogs that dont need
excessive amounts of attention. But its important that men and
women who live in cities recognize that even the most independent dogs need daily attention. Men and women who cant give
that attention should consider pets that require less of a time
commitment.
So which dogs thrive in cities? Unfortunately, there are no guarantees when it comes to dogs and cities. Still, the following are a
handful of breeds that might make great pets for city dwellers.
Chihuahua: Chihuahuas sometimes have more fight in them
than city dwellers would prefer, but socialization issues can typically be overcome early in the dogs life if its owners commit to
helping the animal get along with other dogs. Chihuahuas tend to
be laid back dogs that can happily handle apartment life, as their
small stature does not require much space.
Dachsund: Dachsunds are playful dogs that can easily adapt
to small living spaces. Dachsunds can pack on the pounds rather
quickly, so city dwellers who want dachsunds should be ready to
take them for daily walks and monitor their eating habits.
French bulldog: Small in stature, French bulldogs boast laid
back temperaments, making them ideal for city dwellers looking
for a dog to relax with at the end of the day as opposed to a dog
who wants to play frisbee in the park. French bulldogs also tend to
be affectionate, meaning they are unlikely to encounter problems
on walks through the neighborhood.
Pug: Pugs are affectionate dogs that like attention from their
owners. They enjoy going on walks, but they also dont mind
spending time indoors with their owners. Their size makes them
ideal for apartments, as they dont take up much space. Apartment
dwellers considering pugs should know that pugs are short-nosed
dogs and can suffer from impaired breathing on hot days. That
situation is easily remedied with air conditioning, which is a must
for city-dwelling pug owners.
Dog loving city dwellers dont have to abandon their attempts at
owning dogs just because their apartments are small and their
neighbors are nearby. But it behooves both owner and dog for
potential dog owners to do their homework before bringing dogs
into their lives.

Chemical
calories
...............................................
By The Nutrishop Athlete Team

s of late, there has been a lot of research into the potentially harmful chemicals and additives that not only show
up in our foods, but in our environment. Sure, its impossible to be 100 percent clear of these items in your diet but what
about cooking methods, utensils and the basic environment we
live in? These are all areas where we as health conscious individuals can be more aware of what we are actually allowing into our
bodies. Paying a little more attention to what we consume may
very well extend, or improve, your quality of life.
Several of the experts who are researching this firsthand basically say its not just what you eat, but how you cook it, and what
you cook it in that matters. The containers, our air, what goes on
our skin, and more! What about your bug repellant? Yes, I know
what you are saying, its just too overwhelming; were doomed,
right? Well not exactly, theres hope! We might never be 100
percent free of potentially harmful man-made chemicals, but you
can start by checking out this useful list below for tips on making
your lifestyle a little more chemical free.

11. Use natural bug

12. Use gloves when fueling
your car with gasoline.
13. Look for toys made of
natural materials.
14. Dont store food in plastic containers. Fat acts as a magnet
for chemical calories.
15. Do not use cling free wrap or plastic containers when
heating food in a microwave.
16. Dont drink hot beverages from polystyrene cups.
17. Avoid using non-stick frying pans.
18. To speed up the out-gassing of a new refrigerator or
stove, leave inside small containers of vegetable oil to
absorb the toxins.
19. Avoid chemical hair dyes. If you must use them, take extra
vitamin C and E and a dose of soluble fiber before your visit.
20. If you eat a meal that is high in chemical calories, take some
soluble fiber as soon as possible to reduce the absorption.

Floatation
therapy
helps those
who have
fibromyalgia
.............................................................
By Christine Vander Bloomen

ibromyalgia is often a devastating and unpredictable condition that causes pain and impacts life by interfering with the
ability to do the little things in life that most of us take for
granted. It is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain,
fatigue and sleep problems. Sufferers describe it as a constant dull
ache, which usually is muscle related. Women are more likely
to develop it than men by a ratio of 9:1 and overall 2 percent of
the population is affected. Floatation therapy has been found to
reduce pain, increase relaxation and decrease stress levels in those
suffering from fibromyalgia.
Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way the brain processes pain signals. Those
suffering with fibromyalgia are often told by their doctor to increase
exercise, partake in relaxation type activities and to reduce stress.

According to studies, floatation therapy has been proven to reduce

muscle tension, offer pain relief and increase general relaxation.
In a study published by the Floatation Therapy Research Group,
it was found that floatation therapy helped those suffering with
fibromyalgia to relax, manage their pain and attend to tasks that
normally caused them difficulty. Twenty three volunteers completed
a total of three one-hour floatation sessions not more than five to
seven days apart. Nearly all of the volunteers were women between
the ages of 30 and 62. Participants indicated a 25 percent reduction in muscle tension and pain after their first float and 33 percent
after their third float. Pain relief lasted an average of 2.5 days and
increased with each successive float. Statistical analysis showed that
during all floats the patients relaxation levels increased an average
of 30 percent and stress levels decreased by 30 percent.

In a study published by the

Floatation Therapy Research
Group, it was found that
floatation therapy helped those
suffering with fibromyalgia to
relax, manage their pain and
attend to tasks that normally
caused them difficulty.
Floatation therapy offers an escape from nearly all sensory
stimulation. When you enter the deep meditative state that floating helps you achieve, your brain activity slows down and every
muscle in your body relaxes. The ultimate goal of many floaters is
to trick your brain into thinking your body has fallen asleep. This
allows your brain to disconnect from your body temporarily. The
more you float the better you get at floating. With each successive
float you are able to enter this meditative state more quickly and
stay in it longer.
While floating, you will be inside a floatation therapy chamber.
These specially designed chambers contain a skin temperature
solution of water and Epsom salt. Most units have a minimum
of 900 pounds of Epsom salt and 200 gallons of water. The high
density of the water allows you to float effortlessly. Floatation
units are designed to be light proof and nearly sound proof. You
simply lie on your back in a comfortable position and remain still
for the duration of your session. Music can be played during your
session if it is desired.
Floatation therapy is a wonderful way to ease the symptoms
associated with fibromyalgia. Floating appeals to many with fibromyalgia because it is a drug-free and natural form of therapy.
Floating decreases sensory input, which benefits fibromyalgia
sufferers because often those with fibromyalgia feel over stimulated due to how the disorder affects the nervous system.
Great Lakes Relaxation Center has two classic tank style floatation tanks available so you can bring a friend or loved one to float simultaneously in separate
private rooms. In addition to floatation therapy, we also offer massage therapy,
sound therapy, far infrared sauna, and a steam shower unit. We are open seven
days a week and will take evening appointments, which makes it easy for you to
schedule your floatation sessions. Sessions may be scheduled over the phone or
at our website. Gift certificates can be purchased online as well. Our website is
www.ManitowocMassage.com.
Christine Vander Bloomen has been a massage therapist and owned and operated Great Lakes for nearly eleven years. Her practice has an assortment of
sensory and non-sensory experiences including massage therapy, sound therapy
and heat therapies in addition to floatation therapy. She has been an avid floater
going on three years. She is sought by those seeking pain relief, stress reduction
and pure relaxation.

Enhancing
your yoga
practice with
essential
oils
................................................................
By Crystal M. Hill

ssential oils possess a varied and established history. These

extracted plant compounds have been used throughout
the ages for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. The
applications of essential oils are numerous. More than fluids that
are pleasing to the senses, they heal the body, stimulate the spirit
and calm emotions. For these reasons, they are an exceptional
match to the practice of yoga!
Similar in diversity to essential oils, yoga is more than it
appears. Yoga has an obvious physical component with the practice of asanas, which bring strength and flexibility to the body.
Yet yoga also encompasses well-being of mind, body and spirit.
The harmonious melding of yoga and essential oils takes holistic
healing to a completely different level and brings balance to the
well-being of the individual.
If you are looking for ways to complement your yoga practice
with essential oils, consider the different methods of using oils:
topically, internally and aromatically.

Topical use

Before using oils topically, take care to investigate if the oil or oil
blend you plan to use requires the use of a carrier oil (such as
fractionated grape seed, olive or coconut oil). Essential oils are
absorbed quickly and easily by the skin so they can be irritating if
not used appropriately; however, quick absorption also provides
quick relief. Calming, restorative and disinfecting are a few main
properties of essential oils used on the skin. They also make
wonderful cleaning agents for sweaty, stinky yoga mats!
Suggestion: Try using a few drops of peppermint oil on the chest
before your practice to open the airways, or use after your practice
to ease sore muscles. Mix several drops of melaleuca and lavender
oil with 4 to 6 ozs. of water to mist on your mat after use just
wipe off with a towel.

Internal use

Most essential oils are considered safe for human consumption;

however, there are a few that should not be taken internally. Please
research the labels on the oils you use to educate yourself to use
them safely. That aside, oils that are safe to consume can provide
healing and prevent illness, which in turn allow you to continue a
safe and enjoyable yoga practice.
Suggestion: Add lemon oil to water to stimulate your metabolism and eliminate toxins. Put a drop or two of melaleuca, frankincense, thyme or oregano oil into a few ounces of water and
drink to shorten a cold.

Aromatic use

Diffusing essential oils into the air provides a stimulating and motivating environment for the movement and connection of yoga. The
www.naturespathways.com

sense of smell is very strong and some individuals are very sensitive
to the incense and candles used at some yoga studios. Essential oils
for aromatherapy are a more subtle way to cleanse and purify the
air, enhance breathing and still remain gentle to sensitive noses.
Suggestion: Diffuse lavender or lemongrass oil in your practice
space to create a calming environment. Use wild orange to create
a more invigorating space.
No matter the vehicle or method in which you use essential oil,
quality matters. Many oils on the market are not 100 percent pure
and may be diluted, contain fillers or contain synthetic substitutes. Use only 100 percent pure therapeutic-grade essential oils
to ensure safety and to obtain the most benefit from the oils.
I have only touched on a few of the applications of essential oils.
With many single oils and blends to choose from, the options are
endless to integrate essential oils into your yoga journey to create
alignment and balance for health of mind, body and spirit.

A little
help for
the big
talk
......................................
By The OB/GYNs at Womens
Care of Wisconsin

o many parents are not fully prepared

to see their little girl changing into
a young woman. And many moms
have shared that they felt it happened
almost overnight. Your daughters body
could be maturing faster than you think.
Starting the conversation with her about
her first period can be nerve-wracking
for both you and her! Here are some tips
to help guide you in starting the dialogue
and giving your daughter the support and
confidence she needs.

Educate early

8 years old may seem too young, but in

fact, girls are maturing much faster these
days. Her period can start anywhere from
8 to 16 years of age. By educating her early
and often about what will be happening to
her body, she will be less frightened and
anxious when the day finally comes!

Be open

Keep your conversations light. Laugh and

joke around to make the conversation less
uncomfortable. Of course, this doesnt
mean teasing her; that will only keep her
from coming back to you with questions.
Open up to your daughter about your own
22

Natures Pathways | July 2015

Open up to your daughter about your

own personal stories; reassure her that
what is happening is normal and that you
went through this experience as well.
personal stories; reassure her that what is
happening is normal and that you went
through this experience as well. Invite her
to ask you anything, no matter how silly or
embarrassing she may think it is. This will
make sure she knows that you support her
even when the topic is uncomfortable.

Be prepared

Do some research, know the facts and

think about your responses to questions
she may have. Feel free to reach out to your
OB/GYN or family doctor for additional
suggestions. There are even often free
period starter kits available. These starter
kits can include product samples of pads,
liners and tampons, as well as a guide book
for young girls describing what to expect,
who to talk to, how often it will last, etc.
All of this is contained in a discreet carrying case that can be stashed in her locker,

backpack, gym bag or purse. Period

package starter kits are the perfect tool to
help start the conversation and prepare her
for this big transition in life.

Celebrate!

Make a day of celebrating your daughter!

Go shopping, take a trip to the salon, go to
a movie, whatever it is, do something fun
that she wants to do and welcome this new
phase of her life!
Most importantly, let your daughter know
you are there for her, no matter what,
because getting her period is not only a
normal part of growing up, its also only
the beginning of her story.

Dealing with
difficult
emotions
...............................................................
By Lisa Klarner

ave you ever felt so much joy that

you felt like skipping down the
sidewalk? Most likely you wished
that feeling would stay with you forever.
Well, we all know that staying in a state of
constant joy isnt typical.
Sometimes, we wake up feeling irritable.
It immediately seems like we have gotten
up on the wrong side of the bed. The day
ahead may be noneventful, or it may be
overscheduled and hectic. Whatever the
case, when people feel a negative emotion,
they tense up and resist it because it feels
better to be in a good mood.
What do you think would happen if the
irritation we felt upon waking was simply
recognized as just another emotion in our
catalog of emotions?
If you felt an emotion
like irritation, would
you be able to take a
few seconds to pause
and notice what was
happening in your
body? Might you
notice tension?
Breathing into the
tension and recognizing the emotion
even though its not your favorite one
gives you a different perspective. Taking
this type of view may help you to see that
it is OK to feel this emotion. Its OK to feel
something other than joy or happiness.
When a person feels anxious or
depressed, its normal to resist because
these are not desirable emotions (in our
minds). The person may become angry
www.naturespathways.com

at the bad emotion for showing up yet

again, thinking Please! No more! I cant
take it! Go away! This type of reaction
reinforces and strengthens the emotion. So
it is more likely to crop its ugly head more
often and more intensely.
So if you experience a negative emotion,
try to gently observe and accept it. The
impact that emotion has on your mind
and body lessens. According to Christopher Germer, PhD, author of The Mindful
Path to Self-Compassion, Leaning into our
problems with open eyes and an open heart
with awareness and compassion is the
process by which we get emotional relief.
Just think of it this way, when you go to a
large social gathering where you only know
a couple of people,
you may feel nervous,
anxious and jittery.
If you accept these
emotions, breathe into
them and love them,
the power they have
over you will decrease.
You can begin
to explore different
emotions through the use of mindfulness
practices. Experiment with the concepts
in the safety of your home first, then take
your practices into the actual situations.
You can find out more about mindfulness
techniques by reading a book such as the
one referenced above, finding YouTube
videos with guided mindfulness exercises
and/or attending a mindfulness class.
The variety of emotions you experience

provides you with diverse life experiences.

Appreciate and love all of you! Every
minute of every day you are perfect!

Nutritional
support for
airborne and
seasonal
allergies
...............................................................
By Steve Lankford

utritional science and clinical

experience has confirmed that
many allergy sufferers can experience excellent results using nutritional
formulas for fighting allergies. While overcoming allergies is never easy, it is clear that
the right nutrients taken consistently over
time will provide relief for many people.

Three types of allergies

There are three types of common allergies.

First are airborne sensitivities to pollen,
dust, mold, mites, dander, etc. Next there
are food sensitivities, often to the most
commonly eaten foods such as milk, wheat,
eggs, corn, etc. Last and often most difficult
is chemical sensitivities to common products such as perfumes, petroleum-based
products and other common chemicals.
Each of these types of allergies requires
a different approach because they are
quite different in terms of cause and effect
and supplements used will vary. It is also
important to remember that natural products are used to support your bodys normal
24

Natures Pathways | July 2015

function. You want to choose products that

are formulated to support your specific
needs. Nutritional science has discovered
that certain exceptional nutrients alleviate
allergic symptoms.
This article will cover a natural approach
to airborne allergies. Airborne allergies are
a common recurring condition and many
people are also concerned about perennial
high dose use of allergy medications.

Natural antihistamines

Quercetin is considered by many experts

as one of the most biologically active flavonoids. Quercetins effect on allergies is
unmatched by other natural substances.
Quercetin consistently inhibits the release
of histamines, which are responsible for the
allergic symptoms such as runny nose, and
sneezing and watery/itching eyes. Quercetin should be combined with enzyme
bromelain. Bromelain will enhance
the absorption of quercetin. An added
benefit of bromelain is its ability to block
inflammatory processes and decrease the

viscosity of mucus in the lungs.

Stinging nettles has a long history of
use for allergic rhinitis. One recent study
showed that 58 percent of the participants
had relief in only one week using stinging nettles. Nettles also strengthen the
kidneys, which are one of the bodys filtering systems.
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is an antioxidant and is considered one of the best
expectorant-mucolytic agents. NAC can
decrease the viscosity of mucus. NAC
has been used frequently for various lung
conditions, including chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, bronchitis and asthma.
Relief can be had in as little as twenty
minutes. These natural nutrients do not
cause drowsiness or hyperactivity, and
have no contra indications.

Natural decongestion

Some allergy sufferers also experience

additional congestion, such as nasal,
sinus or bronchial asthma. In these cases
you may also want to consider a natural
www.naturespathways.com

decongestant such as ivy extract. A neti pot

is very useful for nasal congestion.

Homeopathic formulas

Homeopathic remedies are dilute formulas

that when taken in large doses may cause
similar symptoms but in very specific
dilute doses can stimulate a symptomrelieving response. Homeopathic remedies
come as liquid drops, liquid sprays and
tiny tablets that dissolve under the tongue.
Homeopathic remedies are gentle and safe
even for children. Homeopathic remedies
can be purchased as individual remedies or
as combination formulas. There are many
homeopathic combinations for specific
airborne allergies, some for tree and plant
pollens, others for dust and molds.

Additional long-term support

It is important to approach allergies from a

long-term as well as short-term approach.
While short term is important to relieve
symptoms, it is possible to reduce or eliminate your sensitivities to allergens long term
with proper nutritional support. Generally
allergy supplements can be useful for both
short- and long-term benefits. A longterm low dose schedule often works well
to prevent allergies. Additional nutrients
such as vitamin C and pantothenic acid also
work very well to reduce symptoms.
Finally, as foundational support, you
should consider a good multivitamin and
antioxidant formula. Many consumers have
gotten excellent relief from their allergies
using natural products. Some allergy sufferers will get results with a basic program and
others will require an aggressive long-term
approach to achieve long-term results. The
severity of your allergies, how long you have
had allergies, your lifestyle and genetics are
some of the determining factors. Continue
to experiment and you will discover what
works best for you.

Start to take
control of your
health
today
...........................................................
By Howard J. Lubin, B.S., D.D.S.

ave you been to your doctor

lately? If so, you had better
bring your stopwatch. Why? The
average length of a typical visit today is
7 minutes. Obamacare has flooded our
system with 16 million new patients at a
time when there is a shortage of primary
care physicians.
So, what can your doctor do in 7 minutes?
He will listen to your problem and, typically,
do the easiest thing possible to get on to his
next patient. Hell hand you a prescription.
This is the way drug companies pocketed
$373.9 billion dollars in the U.S. last year.
Thats $1,170 dollars for every man, woman
and child! You cant turn on the TV or pick
up a magazine these days without being
bombarded by drug company ads. While
they show you a pleasant scene of people

playing golf during an ad, they also spout

off the side effects of their newest drug
(little things like organ damage and possibly
death, among others).
The fact is that Americans are living
longer than ever. They are also much sicker
than ever. Lets look at a few examples of
how medical care has progressed leading
into the 21st century:
In 1900, only one in 33 people got
cancer. Today, the rate is 1:2 for men
and 1:3 for women.
The rate of autism in 2012 was 1 in 88.
By 2014, the rate had increased to 1 in
50. A child born today in the U.S. will
receive 49 vaccinations by the time
they are 6 years old.
One child in 6 is now considered to be
learning disabled.

One in 9 children suffers with asthma.

One in 10 citizens are diabetic and 27

percent more are prediabetic.

65 million in the U.S. have hyperten-

sion (BP greater than 140/90) with

another 59 million pre-hypertensive.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which
is inflammation of the liver than can
lead to liver failure, now affects 25
percent of the country.
Almost 80 million adults in this
country are considered obese (1/3 of
all adults).
The takeaway message from all this is
that going to the doctor and swallowing
prescription drugs does little to improve
these statistics. If you are the unfortunate
sufferer of a chronic disease, the way to

Americans are

improve your health is to take matters into
your own hands. YOU must take control
of your health. YOU are the only one who
truly cares about your health and that of
your family.

My suggestions for taking

your health into your own
hands:

Most grocery stores are laid out pretty

much the same way. The periphery of

the store contains the fresh produce
and healthier products. The middle
aisles contain highly processed foods
and all the junk. Avoid this!
The Environmental Working Group
(EWG) has lists of the dirty dozen
plus and clean fifteen, which are
excellent guides as to what produce
you should buy organic and which you

can buy regular to save a few bucks.

Check it out at EWG.org.
Avoid all GMO foods (most corn,
soybeans, sugar beets, papayas and
zucchini.) Did you know that GMO
food safety studies have never gone
past 90 days? Why? The rats fed GMOs
long term always develop large cancerous tumors.
Buy only wild caught fish. The
farm-raised versions are fed
synthetic foods and are loaded with
toxic chemicals. Ideally, buy only fish
from the Pacific Ocean, as the Atlantic
is very polluted.
Buy a reverse osmosis filter for your
drinking water. It is one of the only
methods that will remove fluoride as
well as drugs, pesticides and other
pollutants. Fluoride has been linked
to cancer (osteosarcoma), lowered
immune function, hypothyroidism (lowered thyroid function), and
destruction of good gut bacteria and
lowered IQ. Just for the record: Yes,
I was trained as a dentist. And yes,
I want this neurotoxic poison that
affects 70 percent of the US removed
from the water. By the way, much of
the fluoride now added to our water
supply originates from China, is laced
with other toxins and is produced as a
by-product of industrial waste.

Do not depend on drugs to solve your

health problems. Drugs only treat the

symptoms, not the true cause of your
condition. Research vitamins, minerals and herbal remedies, along with
improved diet and exercise. These are
much better solutions to improve your
health by correcting the condition
causing your disease, are less expensive
than pharmaceuticals with much fewer
side effects.

A doctor trained in naturopathic medicine

can be an invaluable guide in your journey
to better health.

Natures Pathways | July 2015

ypnosis is a tool to help change out

old habits for new habits, and also
to get more of the positive results
you want in your life. It even helps with better
outcomes during hospital visits, addressing
phobias, better study habits and more. Like
any tool, it is important to use it in the right
way on the right thing at the right time
just like you use a hammer to hammer in a
nail and a screwdriver to tighten in screws.
With the expansion of the Internet and the
availability of CDs/mp3s, YouTube videos,
group sessions and private sessions, there
are many options for people looking to use
hypnosis or guided meditations to make
positive changes. But which is best?
A hypnosis session is composed of
several critical parts to make it successful
for the client or listener. Two very important components that I will address here
are the induction and the suggestions
contained within the session. Because they

are both so critical for success, I always

recommend private sessions as the best
way to go to ensure success; however, the
other ways to experience hypnosis can also
be very valid and helpful.
All delivery methods (CDs/mp3s,
YouTube videos, group sessions and
private sessions) offer some benefits so
lets explore the induction and suggestions sections of a hypnosis session so you
can better evaluate your future endeavors
when using hypnosis or guided meditations regardless of the method you choose.

The induction

This is the beginning part of the hypnosis

or guided meditation session. It is designed
to help you get to a state that allows your
brain to be more creative and able to
make lasting positive changes. An induction is usually associated with progressive
relaxation.
www.naturespathways.com

to the recording but may not address your

specific needs, which can be a critical factor
in your success or failure with hypnosis.
For weight loss, we all know that generally
a person ought to drink more water, eat
whole foods, eat less, avoid junk foods and
be active, so these are the suggestions found
on generalized recordings. These can be
helpful if the induction works for you and
the suggestions fit your needs. However, if
on the recording it is suggested to go swimming and you dont like to swim but enjoy
walking or it is suggested that exercise be
done at nighttime when you like to do it in
the morning, it is not going to be as helpful
as a private session would be.
In conclusion, if you have been using
a CD or mp3 to do hypnosis and are not
seeing results yet, it is not because you are
not hypnotizable but that either: 1. The
induction is not working for you or 2. The
suggestions do not meet your needs and
goals. To get the best results from your tool
of hypnosis you will need to move on to
working with a professional hypnotist.

However, if on the recording it is

suggested to go swimming and you
dont like to swim but enjoy walking
or it is suggested that exercise be done
at nighttime when you like to do it in
the morning, it is not going to be as
helpful as a private session would be.
If the induction doesnt work well for the
listener, the hypnosis session is not likely
to give the results you are looking for. For
example, a client was given a hypnosis CD
for restful sleep by her doctor. It was free
and given by her doctor so she expected
it to be helpful, and for many people it
may have been very helpful, but it made
things worse for her. Her insomnia was
increasing instead of decreasing and she
wondered, did hypnosis work for her or
was there something about her that made
hypnosis not effective? It turned out that
she was not the problem, the induction
was. The induction actually made her
more anxious instead of relaxed because it
described lying on the beach to relax and
for her, lying on the beach was something

Grow yo
commun ur
ity

Eat, Drink
& Buy Local

she had never enjoyed. She was an incredibly active person and always found being
active more relaxing than sitting still.
With that in mind, a new hypnosis CD
was created for her using her ideas of
what is relaxing and enjoyable. With the
new session in hand, tailored to her needs
about what is relaxing, she was successful
and her sleep improved.

The suggestions

Patricia Trish Poole, CH, EFT-CC,

years of professional experience with
hypnosis and energy healing modalities to provide life changing pre-recorded CDs,
private and group sessions. Her office is located at
2050 Riverside Drive, Green Bay. For more information, visit www.patriciampoole.com.

The suggestions given make up the other

critical part of the session. Generalized
sessions those created for the public at
large, to be sold or shared on YouTube,
etc. have generalized suggestions. These
reach the common denominators of the
vast majority of the people who may listen

Five things most people

dont
know about pole
..........................................................................................................
By Paula Brusky, PhD

hen I started doing pole in 2007, there were a lot of

things I didnt know about the sport! Here are a few
things most people dont realize.
1. There are two very different types of pole dancing. One is
the sensual version youll see in a club where the dancer is
performing to make money and most of her performance
is not done on the pole, but rather on the floor in front of
customers. The other is the fitness version that youll see
in competitions around the world, like the Arnold Sports
Festival, where the dancer is performing amazing athletic
feats similar to gymnastics and spends most of the time
on the pole. There is crossover between these two styles,
depending on the performer, but there is also a big riff in
the pole community between these two forms. Athletes
often try to distance themselves from strippers to
give credibility to their sport.
2. There are two different types of poles. A static pole
doesnt rotate, instead the dancer loosens grip in
order to create spins. This type of pole allows
the performer to place tricks in specific
vantage points for the audience. It also
allows for moves that pull away from
the pole to be flashier because you
arent battling an additional rotation. A spinning pole actually
rotates. The dancer holds tight
to the pole while the pole spins.
The dancer controls the spin with
their own body momentum.
This type of pole allows for
longer in-air spinning
sequences. It also allows
the audience to see a
move from multiple
different angles.
In pole competitions, competitors are required

30

Natures Pathways | July 2015

to use both type of pole; there

are two poles on the stage with
one set to static and the other to
spin and the dancer transitions
between them throughout their
routine. Bruises are a part of the sport! In the field
they are called pole kisses, but at the end of the day when
you are learning a new move the metal will always win
over your soft skin. As you get used to a move and learn
how hard you truly need to grip, the bruising goes away for
that trick. And then there is a new trick to conquer!
3. The more advanced the trick, the less the performer can
wear. For standard chrome, steel, or brass dance poles, you
need skin exposed to stick to the pole to create your grip.
For this reason, if the trick you are doing has your side in
contact with the pole you need to show skin there to hold
the trick. Beginners often have hands, arms, and legs as
their main grip points while advanced pole tricks will use
almost any patch of skin anywhere to grip. This means that
the harder the trick, often the less the dancer wears to have
additional grip options. In competition there are strict
requirements as to what a performer can wear, most wear
something similar to a modest coverage bikini.
4. Pole is difficult. When you watch YouTube videos and
routines are all flowy and beautiful, they have spent an
insane amount of time working on it. When you first learn
a trick it feels awkward and looks odd. But keep working
at it and youll discover your own signature style of beauty
that will empower you in everything in your life.
5. Pole is for everyone. Really. Women of all shapes and sizes
can benefit from taking pole fitness classes. (So can men,
but thats a different article.) Yes, pole is physical and youll
gain strength, flexibility and balance. But there is also a
huge mental aspect to pole. Pole will give you confidence
in yourself.

a quality expertise
The NEW Dermatology Group

goes above and beyond in your care

the

word quality can sometimes be quickly uttered and

somewhat overlooked. But when you think about what
it really means something worthy of being distinguished, possessing superiority that brings it to a higher level you take notice of
whatever it is quality is labeling.
Theres no better adjective to describe the care at The NEW Dermatology Group, and thats exactly why Dr. Kevan Lewis opened the
practice in January of 2013. His focus on both the importance of
excellent medical care and accessible customer service has caused
the practice to grow to over 7,500 patients and five locations in just
two and a half years.
I started with the vision and an idea that we could build a better
practice that was more patient-centric, he explains. But it was just
an idea, and now its a reality. The number of patients who have come
to see us is really just a testament to the importance of providing
exceptional care.

Care in a multitude of ways

As a medical student, I decided I wanted to go into dermatology

because I was attracted to the fact that the specialty is very diverse,
Dr. Lewis says. Its very intellectually challenging and you get to

By Grace Olson

know patients on a long-term basis. Theres continuity of care. You

take care of entire families children, teenagers, adults all for
different reasons.
Its not just the reason, or skin condition, that the providers at
The NEW Dermatology Group want to treat, but the quality of life that
patients are living. Common skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema
and acne affect peoples self-esteem and can be accompanied by
a certain passing of judgement to the public eye. Dr. Lewis wants
people to know about the help available.
I want to be involved in caring for patients whose skin conditions
impair their quality of life, he says. And in turn improve that by
helping them to use treatments and take advantage of new therapies
to not only treat the skin, but treat the whole person who has to wear
that skin every day.
Most types of skin conditions that may affect quality of life have very
effective treatments, which might include topical therapy or systemic
therapy, but in addition to medical care, Dr. Lewis also provides
patients with the education and tools to manage conditions to control
the issues theyre experiencing. The team at The NEW Dermatology
Group spends a lot of time explaining how to produce results with
at-home tips and advice, as well as background information about
what your skin might be undergoing to help treat the problem.

What was perhaps once almost debilitating to a teenager becomes very manageable
as an adult and no longer carries that stigma or that sense of self-consciousness that
people might otherwise have if their skin condition isnt well controlled, Dr. Lewis says.

Have you
considered seeing
a dermatologist?

A leading expert in the

dermatology field

Dr. Lewis and The NEW Dermatology Group

can help you with a broad spectrum of skin
conditions including, but not limited to:
Acne
Actinic keratosis/Age spots
Alopecia areata
Basal cell carcinoma
Dry skin
Keratosis pilaris
Eczema/Atopic dermatitis
Hives/Urticaria
Hair loss
Herpes simplex
Lupus
Melanoma
Moles and mole removal
Nail fungus
Psoriasis
Rosacea
Scabies
Squamous cell carcinoma
Tinea versicolor
Vitiligo
Warts
Wrinkles

The NEW Dermatology Group is seeing a rapid increase in the prevalence of skin cancer
cases, including melanoma and basal cell carcinoma.
As a rule, we encourage people to take care of their skin by protecting it from external damage, Dr. Lewis says. So thats mainly damage from sunlight and tobacco, and
you accomplish that by using sunscreen and avoiding getting sunburns.
While in the past skin cancer cases occurred primarily in older adults, times have
changed. Dr. Lewis says the risk is largely tied to two things: the total amount of sun
damage accrued over ones lifetime and the exposure to tanning beds.
Suggestions to lower the risk include avoiding intense periods of sun exposure and
wearing sunscreen. The standard recommendation from the American Academy of
Dermatology is to wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or greater
and protective clothing whenever possible. Dr. Lewis also adds that its important to
note that most sunscreens are effective for only 2-hour intervals, and even shorter
periods of time when spent in water.
Mohs micrographic surgery, a skin cancer removal technique, is one of Dr. Lewiss
most effective tools in his mission to not only remove skin cancer typically basal cell
carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and a subtype of melanoma occurring on the
head and neck but to also help his patients return to their quality of life.
A very specialized procedure, Mohs surgery is generally used for treating skin cancer
that arises in cosmetically sensitive areas and where theres an importance to sparing
as much tissue as possible. Its a technique that requires sub-specialty training beyond
a dermatology residency. A well-trained Mohs surgeon, like Dr. Lewis, is not only skilled
at removing the skin cancer, but also in the reconstruction that follows.
It is very much an art form where the primary goal is to restore form and functionality in the most cosmetically appealing way, he says. Its a very important part of the
procedure, and is equally important to accuracy in removing the skin cancer with a 98
percent cure rate.
True to his dedication to helping patients live the quality of life they deserve, Dr.
Lewis is the only Mohs surgeon in Northeast Wisconsin who routinely performs both
portions of the surgery in the same session for melanoma arising on the face and
neck. The removal of the skin cancer and the reconstruction occur in the same day.
Its important to him for several reasons, one being the comfort and recovery of the
patient.
It can be difficult for patients to go through a process that is dragged out over days
because theres surgical pain, and it can be hard for them, with a big bandage in a
very prominent spot to feel like going out and doing things. I want them to be able to
as soon as they can, he says. The recovery is also significantly shorter because the
healing gets started a lot quicker.
Being able to provide the benefits of both portions of Mohs surgery for melanoma
on the face and neck in the same session is a skill he was taught during his training, an
experience he couldnt be more thankful for.
Im particularly proud of the cosmetic outcomes of my reconstructions. I was taught
by some amazing surgeons at the Mayo Clinic and I feel really fortunate because of
the quality of that training.
Dr. Lewis is grateful for his past, but is also excited about the future growth of The
NEW Dermatology Group. But not in the typical sense.
My goal is to maintain a small, family-oriented practice where patients are known
on a first name basis, he says. I want there to be a comfort level and familiarity a
small practice that is very attentive to individual patients is the goal.

Host an
outdoor
movie
night
......................................................................

uring the golden age of outdoor movie viewing, drive-in

movie theaters were a phenomenon. By the late 1950s,
a third of theaters in America were drive-ins. Over the
last 40 years or so, the number of drive-in theaters has declined
considerably. Its estimated there are fewer than 400 drive-in
movie theaters in the United States today. Those that are still in
operation face pressure from traditional theaters as well as people
viewing movies and digital screenings at home.
New York, California, Ohio and Pennsylvania boast some of
the highest numbers of drive-in movie theaters across the United
States. The United Drive-In Theater Owners Association also
lists four active drive-ins in the Ontario area of Canada. Those
looking for some summer fun that includes a movie night out can
visit www.driveintheatre-ownersassociation.org to find a nearby
drive-in theater.
Taking a road trip to visit a drive-in theater can be an entertaining adventure. But outdoor movie enthusiasts also can construct
an outdoor theater in the comfort of their own backyards.
Concession sales provided much of the revenue of drive-in
theaters in their glory days. When creating an outdoor viewing
experience at home, dont forget to make food part of the experience. A classic popcorn maker can keep freshly popped corn
ready on demand. In addition, fire up the grill to ensure there are
plenty of tasty items available.
Projectors enable viewers to display a movie on just about any
large, unobscured surface. While a large, hanging sheet can be
handy, any smooth surface on your home, such as a large expanse
of wall, can do the trick. Projectors now come in various sizes, and
there are some pocket-sized varieties that can work with phones
and other mobile devices.
Create multi-leveled viewing by setting up seating on an incline
in the yard, if available. Otherwise, place lawn chairs toward the
www.naturespathways.com

back and have viewers in the front sit on blankets or towels so they
do not obscure the screen for viewers in the back.
Choose a family-friendly or kitschy movie to display. Delve into
the classics of your movie library. Imagine seeing Jaws on a big
screen once more or a cult classic like Ferris Buellers Day Off.
Build in some intermission time when everyone can get up
from their chairs or picnic blankets and mingle. Also, plan some
pre- and post-viewing activities. Drive-in theaters were known
to include some additional entertainment to boost attendance.
Having a dance party or including some carnival type games can
make for a well-rounded and enjoyable night.

Uncover the
riddle of how
amazing
we are
.............................................................................
By Sharon Paprocki, MAC, LPC, NBCC

hat has 6 legs, goes in circles, sounds like thunder and

the blast of air going through big bellows? Riddles
are a great way to stimulate thinking and they are a
good example of information sometimes lurking just below the
surface of what can be seen. The answer to this riddle happens to
be one of my favorite experiences to witness: the thoroughbred
horses during their morning workouts at Churchill Downs. On
the Backtrack Tour there is a stop where, from a small viewing
deck just above ground level, you have the opportunity to watch
these amazing animals run. Each practice rider (thus the reason
for 6 legs in the riddle) follows the trainers instructions on how to
guide their horse from the outermost part of the track where they
warm up by trotting, around to the very inside of the track at the
rail where the horses are released to run full out. The sound of the
horses breathing combined with the powerful strength of their
legs hitting the sand and clay truly inspires awe. Each of the horses
has a set of blinders on in order to promote focus. For the horses
seeing only what is right in front of them keeps distractions to a
minimum. It is just as interesting to note that after a workout the
blinders come off and the horses can use their full range of sight.
Dr. Bruce Lipton, author of the book, Biology of Belief, uses
a visual image that I would like to share with you. Imagine, or
better yet grab, an 8x10 sheet of paper. Right in the center, poke
a pinhole into the paper. Lipton explains that in any one moment
what we can remember, the facts we know, the information we
have learned, the stories of our life, etc. are called our consciousness. It is the size of the pinhole in your paper. What actually
influences how we see, experience and respond to the world is the
entire sheet of paper other than the tiny hole. This majority of the
sheet of paper would be called our subconscious. Another way to
look at this is in terms of operating systems. We each have two.
36

Natures Pathways | July 2015

One is what we are aware of, or consciousness, and the other is the
much larger part, our subconscious.
Scientists tell us that even in the womb we have the ability to
take in information. This information is taken in at a primal level:
safe or unsafe, pain or pleasure, love or fear. We are told that as
infants and toddlers we are recording information long before we
have the ability to cognitively retrieve and use it. In other words, we
are great recorders but not such great interpreters. These imprinted
memories along with generational patterns, dogmas, experiences
and much more are all a part of what makes up the subconscious.
Much of what is in our conscious and subconscious is supportive to our living the amazing life we deserve. Yet most of us have
some area of our life whether it is money, relationships, health,
weight, career, our emotional well-being or some pattern we see
repeating that we would love to improve on or be free from. It is
in these areas that like those majestic horses we are most likely
wearing blinders and we need to be willing to take the blinders off
and check out just what is influencing us both in our conscious
and subconscious minds.
In my practice I get to work with people as they explore information about themselves that up until their setting the intention
to take the blinders off had been flying under their radar in their
www.naturespathways.com

subconscious. The complexity of our brain and how it works is

a mystery that is being unfolded to new levels of understanding
every day. This is exciting news as we have opportunities to access
what used to have to remain under our radar through therapies
such as EMDR and brainspotting. Just as exciting is the growing
awareness of the body/mind/spirit connection as a means to
embracing a life of wholeness. This means we now have opportunities to identify and clear old, nonproductive beliefs and patterns
through energy therapies like breathwork, reiki and cranial sacral.

How can we get started if we want to

take the blinders off?

A good place to start would be to explore what I call our experience

and expectation filter. We each can relate to how our experiences
have an impact on how we see and respond to people and to the
world. For instance, you may know an adult who is afraid of water.
The reason for this may be that this person nearly drowned as a
child. This would be an example of an experience creating an expectation that water is dangerous. If you want to experiment to see how
your experiences may be influencing you, pick an area of your life. It
can be either one that you feel is working great or an area that needs
improving. Lets say you pick money. Ask yourself:
How do I feel about money?
What do I believe about money?
What did I learn about money as a kid?
How did my parents spend money?
How do the important people in my life feel about money?
These types of questions help us to uncover information. You
might find out that besides the fact that you hate paying the bills,
you believe I will never have enough money. You might remember as a kid going to your grandmas house and her telling you that
Money is the root of all evil. Your parents may have reminded
you that, No, you cant go to camp because we dont have the
money. These responses are not meant to point blame, rather
they are to demonstrate how to uncover helpful information. It
is helpful to know what our operating system has been so we can
make the adjustments in it to support what we want.
To uncover the riddle of how amazing we are we need to do
more than scratch the surface. We need to take off the blinders
and ask ourselves questions, as this will help us to digest what
influences us keeping what continues to be in our highest good
and releasing the rest.

How to
handle an
old
401(k)
..................................................

pon making the transition to a new job or retiring, many

people are unsure about what to do with their 401(k) or
other retirement plans linked to their employer. Handling
this transition can be costly, and many men and women might
benefit from the advice of a professional financial advisor to help
them navigate these waters without breaking the bank.
Some men and women may think theyre forced to cash out
their retirement accounts when moving on to new companies.
But, depending on a persons age, thats a potentially costly option
that can incur heavy penalties. Fortunately, cashing out is not the
only option men and women have as they try to figure out what
to do with their retirement accounts after retiring or moving on
to new companies.

Keep the money with your former employer

Some employers allow former employers to keep their retirement

savings in their plans. This allows men and women to avoid early
withdrawal penalties and lets them continue to defer paying taxes
on retirement savings accounts until they reach retirement age and
need to start withdrawing money. Another benefit to keeping money
in an employer retirement plan even after you leave the company is
it protects you if there are rollover restrictions governing any additional accounts you might have transferred the money into.
Employers who do allow former employees to keep their money
in retirement plans likely included certain language in those plans
that govern how the account is managed after employees leave
the company. For example, former employees may no longer be
able to contribute to the plan or take out plan loans. In addition,
when the time comes to withdraw money, you may or may not
38

Natures Pathways | July 2015

be allowed to make partial withdrawals from accounts linked to

former employers. Read the fine print to determine if keeping the
plan with a former employer makes the most sense for you.

Rollover into your new employers

retirement plan

Some people have the option to rollover a 401(k) from a previous

employer into their new employers plan. But not all companies
allow this. If you are allowed to do so, this can make the transition
that much easier while still allowing tax-deferred growth on your
assets. In addition, if you can rollover into your new employers
plan, you may be allowed to take out loans based on the amount
of your combined plan instead of just loans against new contributions. Rollover and plan loan eligibility should be confirmed with
your new employer.
Before rolling over money into your new employers plan,
confirm your investment options under the new plan. If they pale
in comparison to an IRA, you might want to rollover your retirement assets into an IRA that offers more investment options.

Rollover into an IRA

Many men and women look to rollover an old 401(k) into an IRA,
as traditional and Roth IRAs may offer a wider variety of investment options than a previous or current employers retirement
plan. Taxes differ depending on which type of IRA you choose to
roll your funds into, so discuss your IRA options with your financial advisor to determine if this is the best way to go.

that raise blood sugar, clog arteries and cause weight gain, not the

Triglycerides fat does clog arteries and that fat comes from carbohydrates. When your triglyceride fat number comes down, it is a

Homeopathy to
support autism
and autism
spectrum
disorders
(ASDs)
......................................................................
By Rebecca Beringer

ope and support to those with autism and ASDs lies in

the field of homeopathy. Homeopathy seeks to stimulate
the innate healing power of the individual so that all
physiological systems function at their best. It acts on an energetic level and has a broad effect, shifting mental, emotional and
physical symptoms. Since homeopathy is used to assist people
rather than treat disease, anyone, whatever his or her diagnosis,
can benefit from homeopathic care. Therefore, homeopathy has
an absolute place in the support of autism through individualizing
the experience of each client.
In the late 1990s Tinus Smits, a homeopath and physician in the
Netherlands, released his research and findings on using homeopathy in autism and ASDs. His method for applying homeopathy in this manner is known as CEASE Therapy. CEASE stands
for the complete elimination of autism spectrum expression. Dr.

Smits had such success with his method that he began training
and certifying homeopaths and medical professionals throughout
the Netherlands and worldwide to carry forth his work.
CEASE begins with the application of a homeopathic remedy
tailored to the specific symptom picture of the person. The
homeopathic remedy is given to support the vital energetic
healing system of the person to bring about improvement in
energy, mood and experiences. If and when necessary, detoxification of toxins or environmental blocks is added to the process.
Detoxification is done through homeopathy and isotherapy (a
form of homeopathy).
Homeopathy is tailored to the specific experience of each client.
Therefore, two people with autism seeking homeopathic care would
not necessarily receive the same remedy. The common attributes
of autism are taken into account: deficits in verbal and nonverbal

communication, difficulty developing, understanding and maintaining relationships, underdeveloped emotions with difficulty
expressing or exchanging emotional context, etc. Then a further
exploration into the finer nuances and experience of each client
is considered. Symptoms such as the anxiety and fears, rigidity
or flexibility, bowel and gut discomforts, eating challenges, sleep
disturbances, aggression or passivity, etc. These finer nuances guide
the homeopath to the best choice for homeopathic remedies.
Autism Speaks, a world leader in autism Science and Advocacy
reports that autism affects 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys, and
figures are growing. Boys are nearly five times more likely than
girls to have autism and it is estimated to cost families $60,000 per
year. There is no medical detection or cure for autism so Autism
Speaks urges early intervention and detection, and if your child

exhibits any of the telltale symptoms of autism, please dont delay

in asking your pediatrician or family doctor for an evaluation.
Autism has become so common in the United States. While the
diagnosis can carry a label of struggle, we are also beginning to
understand the gifts that the autistic person has to bring forth
in this world. This is why utilizing therapeutic healing modalities such as homeopathy is imperative. Homeopathy lessens the
suffering so the gifts can come forth.
The CEASE method has now spread from the Netherlands to
all parts of the world. And in the years since the original application of Dr. Smits work in assisting the autistic client, homeopathic
professionals have realized the broader application of the principals
in CEASE for many other concerns such as attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), Lyme
disease, chronic fatigue, etc. CEASE can and should only be carried
out by a certified CEASE therapist and professional homeopath. A
listing of such professionals, as well as more information and testimonials can be found at www.cease-therapy.com. More information
can be found in Dr. Smits book, Autism: Beyond Despair.
Rebecca Beringer is a classical homeopath and a CEASE certified
homeopath with over five years of experience working with men,
women and children of all ages. Her practice serves clients all over
northeast Wisconsin and the broader U.S. Her practice is based
in Appleton, inside Lawe Street Wellness. She is a graduate of the
highly respected Northwestern Academy of Homeopathy in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She can be reached at healingwayhomeopathy@gmail.com or 920-7405048. For more information, visit www.healingwayhomeopathy.com. Workshop

and the results of my ad. It has only been running a couple
months and I already have 13 new clients off the ad. Not
only are they new clients, but also clients that continually
book over and over with me! This is different from my
experience working with a coupon magazine in which case
people tended to come in and just use the coupon and
then didnt come back. I also have seen a better response
in this short time with Natures Pathways than what I have
with the coupon magazine. The clients I have pulled from
Natures Pathways so far are quality middle aged or retired

Starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 25 at Countryside Golf Course in
Kaukauna, participants will find activities, food, raffles and auctions
and, new this year, a balloon costume contest. Thats right! Walkers
and golfers are eligible, and the only requirement is the costume
must be made up at least partly of balloons.
This fun event is for anyone who cares about families struggling
with a medical crisis. There will be many things to do, even for

non-golfers. The event inside the clubhouse

runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes
a bake sale, chances to win a grill donated by Sams Club, a gun, a
booze wagon, and many other prizes. TJ the DJ will provide music
in a variety of styles, and there will be gift baskets and other items up
for bid.
The popular Golf Outing begun by Frederickson and her mother,
Karla Wolfinger, memorializes their father and husband, Larry
Wolfinger, who spent a lot of time at Countryside Golf Course
when he was alive. To serve all those applying for funds, the two set
up Community Benefit Tree, Inc. (CBT), a 501(c)3 nonprofit that
assists in putting on one-day fundraising events for someone struggling with a medical crisis.

golfing on the back nine at the same time. After the walk, we will
continue golfing on the front nine as well.
Cost to golf before July 1 is $40 for nine holes and $80 for eighteen, with the prices rising after that to $45 and $85. The fee includes

How to help
children make
new
friends

tudents learn lessons each day. While many of these lessons

pertain to their coursework, kids pick up much more than
book smarts from school, where kids first learn to cultivate
friendships and build lasting relationships.
In addition to a new curriculum, new teachers and new schedules, kids also might make new friends once a school year begins.
While some familiar faces carry through from grade to grade,
chances are youngsters will meet new students who will soon
become good friends. While many kids find it easy to make new
friends, others might need some assistance so they can make
the most of opportunities to socialize and form friendships that
might last a lifetime.

other kids and their parents who do not want the hassle of an
unruly youngster coming over to play. Respectful children who
are honest, trustworthy and capable of sustaining eye contact and
making small talk may find it easy to make friends.

OFFER OPPORTUNITIES FOR SOCIALIZATION. Children

TAKE THE FRIENDSHIP LEAD. As parents, you can improve

should be given the opportunity to explore friendships outside

of the classroom where peer pressure might not be so prevalent.
Establish a carpool or invite a classmate over for a play date.
Unstructured time to play or get to know each other is a great way
to establish friendships. Invite new children over each time to see
which friendships are the strongest, but make sure you are not
pushing a friendship on your child.
DISCOVER COMMON INTERESTS. One of the quickest ways

to build friendships is through common interests, says Kirk

Martin, a behavioral therapist and author. Encourage your child
to join a club or sports group where he or she can meet other kids
with similar interests. Sometimes finding reasons to talk to other
children is the most difficult step to making new friends. Sharing
a common interest removes this barrier.
TEACH PROPER MANNERS. Children who are polite, well-

mannered and know how to follow direction are better equipped

to attract friends. Children who misbehave may be shunned by

your childs chances of making friends by getting friendly with

their classmates parents. You do not have to become bosom
buddies with everyone, but making connections with fellow
parents can reinforce the value of friendship to your children.
Socializing as families also presents other opportunities to get
together and solidify relationships.
BOOST CONFIDENCE LEVELS. As a parent, you can talk

to your children about their strengths and positive attributes.

Emphasizing kids best traits will increase their self-esteem, and
that sense of self-worth can make it easier for them to make
friends. A child who is shy and insecure may retreat when meeting
new people, but a child who can proudly stand behind his or her
accomplishments may attract friends easily.
School is about more than just hitting the books. Its also a
prime opportunity for kids to develop their personal skills and
make new friends.

How traditional
Chinese medicine
views
fibromyalgia
............................................................................................
By Courtney Cowie, MA, LMBT

lthough it affects an estimated 6

million people, fibromyalgia can be
difficult to diagnose and difficult
for those affected to manage. Fibromyalgia
is an inflammatory condition affecting the
muscles and connective tissue of the body.
It may cause localized areas in the soft tissue
of the body to become tender to the touch
(trigger points), eliciting pain in areas such
as the shoulders, upper, mid or low back,
and hips, muscle weakness and spasms, and
pain that worsens with activity.
It occurs more frequently in women than
in men. Fibromyalgia has a strong correlation with and may occur in tandem with
chronic fatigue, depression, insomnia and
some gastrointestinal problems such as irritable bowel syndrome and celiac disease.
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) views
fibromyalgia as one type of muscle bi
syndrome, or chronic muscle energy blockage/pain, and, in terms of five element theory,
considers the condition to be a disharmony
between the elements fire and water. In basic
TCM terms, fibromyalgia progresses from qi
energy stagnation to deficiency.
When treating a client with fibromyalgia, traditional Chinese medicine takes
www.naturespathways.com

into account the whole person, not just

the pain. As a TCM trained therapeutic
bodyworker, in addition to using Chinese
medical massage (tui na) techniques on
areas of the body experiencing the most
pain or tenderness, I also incorporate
acupressure points that tonify the immune
system, release stagnation and work to
calm the mind and stabilize emotions.
Although diet, lifestyle and self-care
practices can make a big impact on the
ability to effectively manage fibromyalgia
symptoms, different from acute injuries
or overuse injuries that can usually be
rehabilitated over the course of several
sessions, fibromyalgia tends to respond
best to regular, ongoing soft tissue therapy
aimed at managing the pain.
Courtney Cowie, MA, LMBT, is the

Composting
at high
noon!
.............................................................
By Sarah Everson

pringtime is the perfect time to

build a compost pile, while fall is the
perfect time to harvest compost and
apply it. What happens with a compost
pile during the hot sun of a summers day?
Usually by midsummer a backyard bin/
pile should be in full composting mode.
If it doesnt look quite right here are some
simple tips for troubleshooting your backyard compost.

Is it hot in
there?

This is one of the

biggest problems
with a backyard
compost pile. These compost piles may
have issues reaching high temperature
when they are built slowly as waste is
created. The only way to get a hot pile
in your backyard is to build a pile that is

part nitrogen. Do not add any additional
material and just let that pile compost.
Turn it about every week for a month, then
turn it every other week for the next month
and the final month just let it cure. If this
seems overwhelming or a lot of work, do
not worry! Successful compost can be
created, but it will be slower and have a
low temperature. Compost is active at 55
degrees, which is why piles thrive in the
summer when the outdoor temperature
is well above 55 degrees and slow down
in the winter when the temperatures get
colder.
Another problem that causes low
temperature is if there is too much brown
matter or not enough nitrogen present in
a pile. Nitrogen is needed for the compost
process to occur but too much nitrogen
can cause issues.

Whats that smell?

If your pile has an ammonia or rotten odor,

it usually is from excess moisture, compaction or too much nitrogen (greens). The
best way to resolve these issues is to turn
the pile, add dry carbon (browns) material

to add air space and cover food scraps. Too much nitrogen would
be from a pile made out of all grass clippings, food scraps and
plant material. Remember that a backyard compost pile should
NOT have an equal ratio of carbon (browns) to nitrogen (green).
Three parts carbon to one part nitrogen is suggested. If the pile is
so wet that water drips out when a handful is squeezed, then dry
carbon material such as woodchips, leaves or soil will help the
pile dry out along with balancing out the carbon to nitrogen ratio
of the pile. Regardless of what nitrogen is used in a pile, it should
always be covered by a carbon as the top layer.

The little crawling things pests and insects

If you find unwanted animals attracted to your backyard compost

pile it could be from the presence of meat scraps or dairy. Make
sure these items are not put into a backyard compost pile. Fruits
and vegetables are compostable whereas meat, bones, greasy and
dairy products are not. If you are composting produce waste
make sure that it is covered with browns. Another option is to
compost with a bin rather than an open pile. Most bins are animal
resistant and also help heat the compost while in the sunlight.
Insects are a sign of a successful compost pile. Congratulations!
Insects/bugs are what make the compost. The number of bugs
found in a pile correlates with how healthy a backyard pile is. An
abundance of fruit flies usually mean that the food scraps need to
be covered better with browns and too many ants means that the
pile is too dry. It is suggested that water is added and turn the pile
to disrupt the ant colonies.
There is nothing more rewarding than a hot cooking backyard compost pile. Hopefully the tips will help problem solve any
issues a pile might have. Just dont forget to wear sunscreen while
working on a compost pile in the hot summers sun.

The
electronics
recycling
marketplace
is
changing
............................................................
By Jennifer Semrau

n 2010, Wisconsins recycling law for electronics, called

E-Cycle Wisconsin, went into effect. The result has been over
160 MILLION pounds of electronics collected from residents and eligible schools in the first five years. This impressive
figure has kept many toxic materials such as lead, mercury and
cadmium out of landfills and precipitated the recycling of plastic,
glass, precious metals and other materials. Despite the laws
success, currently there are some challenges facing the program
that impact consumers seeking to recycle their electronics.
First a little background on Wisconsins program. Wisconsins electronics recycling law is called a product stewardship
model. What this means is that creators of a product (manufacturers) share in the responsibility for end-of-life management of
the product. This is rather unique for Wisconsin. For basically all
other items a person buys, only the consumer is responsible for its
disposal. For instance, if you buy a bottle of soda, Pepsi or Coke
doesnt have any involvement in what you do with the bottle when
the soda is gone. Or if you buy a toy, car, bike, lawn mower, etc.
the manufacturer of that item is not involved in what happens to
it when it no longer works.
Electronics are different. With Wisconsins E-cycle law, manufacturers of electronics share responsibility to ensure their products are properly managed (recycled) at the end of their useful
life. Each manufacturer that sells electronics in Wisconsin has a
certain annual target of pounds they must recycle, based on their
50

Natures Pathways | July 2015

sales within the state. To accomplish this task, manufacturers

work with electronics recyclers, and recyclers work with collectors to receive used electronics from the general public. Collectors can be retailers (like Best Buy), non-profits (like Goodwill) or
local governments (like counties or cities).
As mentioned above, the program has been successful in recycling a vast number of electronics, which includes computers, televisions, laptops, printers, VCRs, DVD players and other similar
items. Yet the program is almost a victim of its own success. More
electronics have been collected for recycling than the manufacturers targets. While this is not a bad thing, manufacturers are only
required to help offset the recycling costs up to their target weight.
Current electronics which are sold (flat screen TVs, tablets) are
generally lighter in weight than electronics which are being
collected for recycling (console TVs, old monitors). Further, the
international marketplace for many of the materials generated
by recycling electronics (leaded glass, plastics, etc.) have been
depressed. The result has been higher costs to recycle electronics.

GROW YOUR

Due to the higher costs of recycling electronics, there has been a

decrease in the past year in the number of collectors of electronics in
the state. Some non-profits, retailers and local governments felt they
could no longer afford to provide the service. Many collectors who
continue to offer electronics recycling services have had to increase
the rates they charge consumers or may have opted to take only
certain devices for recycling (no televisions, for instance). Unfortunately, this has resulted in less recycling options for the general
public, at a higher cost, which can lead to illegal dumping.
Thankfully, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
(WDNR) has recognized these issues and is working to address
challenges facing E-Cycle Wisconsin. Working in a collaborative
effort with E-Cycle stakeholders, potential solutions and ideas
are being discussed for possible implementation. Further, Northeast Wisconsin continues to have a number of outlets accepting
consumer electronics for recycling. To find an E-Cycle collector
near you, visit http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/Ecycle/.

How to sneak
fruits and
vegetables
into any
recipe

ruits and vegetables are the building blocks of a healthy diet.

But many people do not eat the recommended number of
servings of produce. Thats especially true among growing
children, who can benefit greatly from the vitamins and nutrients
fruits and vegetables provide.
According to the latest data from the NPD Group, a market
research firm, Americans eat a little more than a cup of fruit
and a cup of vegetables per day. This is less than half of what the
government recommends. Anyone who eats roughly 2,000 calories per day should strive to consume between 2 to 3 cups of vegetables and 2 cups of fruit per day.
Produce helps to fight disease because it contains healthy antioxidants, fiber, minerals and vitamins. Eating four cups per day
may seem difficult, but there are many ways to incorporate fruits
and vegetables into everyday recipes.
Substitute pureed fruit, like figs, pears and apples, for oil
in recipes for cakes and cookies. This will ensure the baked
goods are moist but with a lot less fat.
Add fresh berries or raisins to breakfast cereals and oatmeal.
Add cauliflower or squash to boiled potatoes before mashing
them to increase the nutritional punch and flavor of mashed
potatoes.
Blend fruits and vegetables to create smoothies for breakfast or
lunch on the go.
Bake hearty muffins or breads with sweet potato or carrots in
the batter.
Mix stewed tomatoes in with your broth soup base to make a
vegetable or chicken soup even more nutritious.
Opt for vegetables piled high atop a slice of pizza in lieu of
meats or extra cheese.
Divide your dinner plate into quadrants, filling half of the
52

Natures Pathways | July 2015

plate with vegetables, one quarter with meat and the remainder with a whole grain.
Replace lettuce on a sandwich or burger with a fresh leaf of
spinach. While youre dressing your sandwich, add a slice of
tomato, too.
Substitute fresh vegetables and fruit slices for chips when
serving dips and salsas. Kale chips are growing in popularity.
Give children a cup of sliced grapes with their lunches as a
refreshing and healthy snack.
Shred vegetables into a hearty slaw and top it with a vinaigrette or a typical mayonnaise-based dressing.
Blend other vegetables into your pasta sauce.
Use vegetables instead of pasta in traditional dishes. Layer
eggplant slices to make a lasagna. Or use a spiral slicer to slice
zucchini or carrots when making homemade noodles.
Fruit salad is often a refreshing snack or dessert. Having fruit
already diced in a large bowl makes it more convenient to eat
and possibly more enticing to children.
Make a vegetable roll-up, filling pizza dough with broccoli or
spinach and shredded cheese.
Mix together an avocado, cup of cocoa powder and cup
honey to create a healthy alternative to chocolate pudding.
Use pureed vegetables to thicken cheese sauce for macaroni
and cheese recipes.
Shred vegetables and add them to beaten eggs for omelets or
scrambles.

Tips for
perfectly
grilled
vegetables
...................................................

ne of the highlights of the summer season is the incredible bounty of fresh produce, and grilling these vegetables gives them a smoky, delicious dimension. Chef BBQ
Naz, a grilling expert from Broil King, shares some simple tips for
flavor perfection.
When preparing vegetables, slice them to expose as much of
the vegetable to the grill surface as you can.
Coat vegetables with olive oil before placing them on the grill.
This will help prevent them from sticking to the grill.
Use the right tool for the job. Accessories like grill toppers
and skewers are perfect for keeping smaller foods like cherry
tomatoes and onions from rolling around or falling through
the grate.
Dont leave vegetables unattended. Vegetables are delicate and
can easily overcook if not monitored.
Grill extras. Leftover grilled vegetables are great in soups,
salads, sandwiches and on pizzas and pasta.

Directions:

Preheat the grill on medium. Brush both sides of sliced zucchini

with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Place on the grill and cook for
4 minutes per side.
When cooked, set on a wire rack to cool. In a small bowl, combine
the chevre, salt, pepper, sun-dried tomatoes, oil and thyme. Using a
small spatula, spread the cheese mixture thinly over one side of the
zucchini. Lightly roll the zucchini, and place seam side down on a
small, parchment-lined baking sheet. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
Place baking sheet on top rack of the grill for 15 minutes.
Remove to a platter and serve.

Soy
Glycine max
..............................

oy, a plant in the pea family, has been

common in Asian diets for thousands of years. It is found in modern
American diets as a food or food additive.
Soybeans, the high-protein seeds of the soy
plant, contain isoflavones compounds
similar to the female hormone estrogen.
Traditional or folk uses of soy products
include menopausal symptoms, osteoporosis, memory problems, high blood pressure,
high cholesterol levels, breast cancer and
prostate cancer.
Soy is available in dietary supplements,
in forms such as tablets and capsules.
Soy supplements may contain isoflavones
or soy protein or both. Soybeans can be
cooked and eaten or used to make tofu,
soy milk and other foods. Also, soy is
sometimes used as an additive in various
processed foods, including baked goods,
cheese and pasta.

What the science says

Research suggests that daily intake of soy

protein may slightly lower levels of LDL
54

Natures Pathways | July 2015

(bad) cholesterol.
Some studies suggest that soy isoflavone supplements may reduce hot flashes
in women after menopause. However, the
results have been inconsistent.
There is not enough scientific evidence
to determine whether soy supplements are
effective for any other health uses.
NCCIH supports studies on soy, including its effects in cardiovascular disease and
breast cancer, and on menopause-related
symptoms and bone loss.

Side effects and cautions

Soy is considered safe for most people

when used as a food or when taken for
short periods as a dietary supplement.
Minor stomach and bowel problems
such as nausea, bloating and constipation
are possible.
Allergic reactions such as breathing
problems and rash can occur in rare cases.
The safety of long term use of soy isoflavones has not been established. Evidence
is mixed on whether using isoflavone

supplements over time can increase the

risk of endometrial hyperplasia (a thickening of the lining of the uterus that can lead
to cancer). Studies show no effect of dietary
soy on risk for endometrial hyperplasia.
Note: Soys possible role in breast cancer
risk is uncertain. Until more is known about
soys effect on estrogen levels, women who
have or who are at increased risk of developing breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive conditions (such as ovarian or uterine
cancer) should be particularly careful about
using soy and should discuss it with their
health care providers.
Tell all your health care providers about
any complementary health approaches you
use. Give them a full picture of what you do
to manage your health. This will help ensure
coordinated and safe care. For tips about
talking with your health care providers
about complementary health approaches,
see NCCIHs Time to Talk campaign.
