Hello!
Welcome to the San Luis Obispo Blues Baseball organization. This season is shaping up to be one of the best
yet, and we are sincerely grateful that you have chosen to be a part of it.
The San Luis Blues are members of one of the California Collegiate League (CCL); one of the most progressive
summer collegiate leagues in the country. It is composed of eleven teams and three divisions which stretch
from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The Blues have won league titles in two of the last four years and had an
overall record of 40-12 in 2014.
Allow me to highlight the guiding principles of the Blues organization. Our first is to provide first-rate and
affordable family entertainment to California's central coast residents. We believe it is our responsibility as a
local business to give back to this great community. We are proud to say that we drew more than 30,000
people to Sinsheimer Stadium last year alone. Our second mission is to mentor and advance the professional
and physical skills of collegiate ballplayers. Local and national Division I baseball players continue their
development while temporarily away from their parent college or university. Our third mission is to continue
and expand our internship program which focuses on a learn-by-doing approach. We take great pride in our
interns' involvement in nearly every aspect of operations. This season we will utilize more than 25 interns to
help with game day and marketing operations.
This season we will play 47 games during the regular season (37 home, 10 road), provide three post-game
fireworks shows, and host the CCL Tournament at the end of the regular season. Coach Clark has assembled
yet another strong roster and we will once again be competing for the CCL title. We look forward to
experiencing the 2015 season with you.
Go Blues!
Sincerely,

Adam Stowe

History of the Blues

The San Luis Obispo Blues began in 1946 when founding manager Sandy Leguina gathered a group of WWII
veterans coming home to San Luis Obispo who wanted to play baseball. The Blues originally started off as the
Merchants, but George Baker, sports editor of the Telegram-Tribune, later decided that the team name should
be more colorful and offered the name the Blues.
The Blues became directly connected to the roots of Little League, Babe Ruth, youth baseball, and the
American Legion baseball programs in San Luis Obispo during the 1950s and 1960s. It was during this time that
Legiuna, Joe Navoni, and some members of the team provided the organizational leadership, coaches, and
other resources for various leagues and teams.
The SLO Blues are a summer collegiate wooden baseball club. All of our players are current college athletes
throughout the United States. We are a not-for-profit organization that competes seasonally from May to
August. Home games are held at Sinsheimer Stadium located at 900 Southwood Drive in San Luis Obispo. The
team competes in the California Collegiate League (CCL) and continues to be ranked among the top 20 teams
nationally from a field of more than 300 teams.

Player Information
Players report to Sinsheimer Stadium on May 22nd 2015. Attached to the manual is a copy of the players daily
game day itineraries for the entire 2015 season. Some players will arrive later if they are involved in postseason play or finishing course work with their schools. Host family/player assignments are finalized one week
before report day. Please refer to the 2015 season Home Game Daily Itinerary (pg 8-9) for the times players
are expected and the order of pregame events.
Blues players are required to be upstanding citizens of the San Luis Obispo community and obey all state and
local laws. The legal age for consumption of alcoholic beverages is 21 in California. Under no circumstance is a
player of legal age to provide or purchase alcohol for an underage teammate or consume alcohol during any
organized event or within the Host Family residence. Overnight guests are not permitted under any
circumstance within a Host Family residence; nor are romantic relationships between players and any member
of the Blues staff.
Transportation will be provided by the Blues for away games. However, players must provide their own form
of transportation for all home games to and from Sinsheimer Stadium. Players will be provided a lunch during
travel for all away games. Opponent teams will provide a post-game meal. During home games, players must
provide their own meals or bring money to buy food. Host Families are not responsible to feed players before,
during, or after games.

Housing Information
Host families are generally assigned one player to a residence. It is the players responsibility to follow the host
familys household rules, as well as, state and local laws. Players are asked to treat host families with respect
and conduct themselves as family members, not as honored guests. Improper conduct toward a host
family, teammates host family, or other people in the community will result in disciplinary action or may
result in immediate removal from their host family and/or position on the team. Host families, please do not
hesitate to contact Host Family Coordinator, Marianne Stowe, if there are any discrepancies that need to be
further investigated. In return, host families should be sure that players feel like they are a part of the family
and provide a lifestyle of home away from home. Please keep in mind that they are college students who
have lived on their own for some time.
Host Family Responsibilities: Host families are required to provide a clean, private place to sleep, a bathroom,
and laundry facilities. Host families are not required to provide meals during the season. Players should plan
on providing their own meals. However, host families may choose to invite players to share a family meal or
partake in family activities. An early trip to the nearest grocery store will not only provide time to get to know
one another, but will give the player a chance to pick out some of his own grocery necessities. Players provide
their own transportation as required by the NCAA policy. Some players arriving from across the country are
without transportation and need to stay close to other players with transportation. Under these
circumstances, players must rely on assistance from other teammates for getting to and from the stadium.
Host Family Perks: In appreciation for becoming a host family, your family will receive the following benefits:
Season tickets for each adult family member including firework and playoff games
20 food vouchers per family (value $100)
A $200 housing fee from each player (must be paid in full prior to playing for the Blues)
All adult, full-time household residents will receive a choice of long-sleeve host family t-shirt,
embroidered SLO Blues hat, or a Blues car flag; children will get a SLO Blues pin
One free childrens camp registration for Blues Summer Camps
A Preseason Meet & Greet barbeque for all host families
Reserved VIP parking at home games
A host family Appreciation Ceremony/plaque & BBQ at the end of the season
** Do not forget to display your 2015 season parking pass to receive reserved season ticket holder parking
and do not forget your season pass to enter through the season ticket holder entrance.
A roster will be sent to all host families with host family contact information once housing assignments are
finalized.

Host Family/Player Guidelines

Host Families will be expected to provide:
1. A clean, safe, smoke-free and pleasant environment, including a bedroom for the player staying
with them.
2. Reasonable use of bathroom and laundry facilities.
3. Communicate any and all house rules to the player staying under the host family family roof. The
player must abide by those family rules throughout the season.
Players will be expected to:
1. Keep your room in a clean and orderly fashion. Players will be held responsible for any household
damages they cause.
2. Provide your own health and personal care items.
3. Be appreciative, courteous, helpful, and pleasant to your hosts.
4. Refrain from the use of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs.
5. Minimize the noise level of your activities, including your comings and goings, so as not to disturb
your host family.
6. Pay for your own expenses.
7. Be aware of costs of water and utility usage in our area. California is currently in a severe drought,
so make sure to conserve usage of water and energy throughout your entire stay.

In past years, host family/player relationships differed substantially from player to player. We are asking
that each host family sit down with their player within a few days of his arrival to discuss the following
issues:
1. Handling food/meals: Many players fix their own breakfast and lunch, but need food available. If
the team is off, the player might be included in family mealtime. If the team is home, discuss the
best way to be sure your player has a meal for suppertime (i.e. some like to eat before the game,
others like to eat after the game). Discuss and find what works best for the family and the player.
Some families cook late after the game for players and others take them out, while others prefer
the player stop and get dinner before coming home.
2. How to handle late night arrivals: Because of players schedules, a curfew isnt applicable.
However, it is important that player arrivals and departures are handled in such a way that the host
family is not disturbed (e.g., quiet entrance through use of back/front doors, quiet late night
showers, polite text saying you will not be home and where you will be). Please keep your host
family informed.
3. Overnight guests: Players having friends, girlfriends, or family members visiting town is
encouraged, but no overnight guests will be allowed to stay at the players host family residence.
Players can stay the night at other players host families residences if that host family allows it, but
no other overnight guests are allowed. Romantic relationships between Blues players and staff are
also not allowed under any circumstance.
4. Laundering uniforms: Communicate the proper times to launder their uniforms within the
household. Uniforms should not be washed in hot water or with bleach.
5. House rules when family is out of the house: Communicate to the player any rules or regulations
you may have within your household while you are away from the house.
6. Legal drinking age: Some players will be of the legal drinking age of 21. Inform your player of any
household rules or guidelines involving alcoholic beverages. Players who are of the age of 21 are
not allowed to purchase alcohol for any underage players.
7. Feel free to discuss any other issues or areas of importance within your household to your player.

Blues Baseball
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What must I provide for the players I host?
Families are required to supply players with a private room, a bed, access to laundry equipment, a
bathroom, and a kitchen. The Blues prefer for host families to provide internet access for the
players, but do not require it. Providing food is not mandatory, but is encouraged.
2. Am I expected to provide my boarder with transportation?
No. Some players will drive their own cars, and for those who dont, the team will arrange
transportation. You can, however, provide a car or rides if you feel so inclined.
3. How long will the players require housing?
Players arrive on or around May 22nd and will stay until the end of the first week of August.
4. Can I host more than one player?
Yes! Those who would like to host multiple players are encouraged to do so.
5. Under what guidelines will the players abide?
Players are expected to respond to each familys rules, whether its a curfew, cleanliness standards,
or assigned chores. Summer baseball is a dress rehearsal for the majors.
6. What is a players daily itinerary like?
The Blues will play roughly a 50-game regular season schedule; those who qualify participate in the
playoffs. Players are expected at the field early for warm-ups and batting practice on game day.
Theyll depart early in the morning when they travel. They are also encouraged to work with local
youth organizations in their spare time.
7. Am I required to attend the games?
No. Many of the host families come to support the team, but it is not required.
8. Can I choose which player I board?
No. However, we will do our best to accommodate specific requests.
9. We would like to host a player, but we are leaving town for vacation for two weeks, and dont
feel comfortable leaving the player alone in our home. Is it possible to still participate?
We would prefer not to have players move once they have settled in with a family, but the answer
is yes, you can still participate. Sometimes, we are able to find a temporary home for your player
during your vacation time away. Often if two families have vacations planned, they can cover for
each other by taking in another player during the vacation and then the other family can
reciprocate.

18

10. We have three cats. Do you make sure that players dont have pet allergies?
Yes. We ask about allergies and whether host families have pets, and try to make sure that allergic
players arent housed with animals they cannot be around.
11. Will players be using our phones? Late night phone calls may be a problem.
No. Players bring their cell phones and use them exclusively for their phone calls.
12. Im really hoping that we can host a player who will help our son with his baseball skills. Is this
possible?
All host family situations are unique, and your player and your son could certainly have that kind of
a relationship. However, you should keep in mind that Blues players are extremely busy. They play
five or more games a week while maintaining a workout schedule and time for rest. Some players
do not interact as much with their host family as others do.
13. What rules are there about drinking and using drugs?
Drugs are strictly forbidden, as is underage drinking, although some players are over 21 and can
legally drink. However, even if your player is over 21, feel free to establish your home as nodrinking zone, and please do not under any circumstances give underage players alcohol.
14. What happens if there is a problem with the placement of a player?
We have not had many problems with boarding placements. Blues players appreciate host
families hospitality, and generally behave as guests in your home. If there is a minor problem, we
ask that you contact the host family coordinator, who will work to try to resolve the issue with the
player. If the problem is major, you must immediately contact the host family coordinator, head
coach, or general manager. Measures will be taken to rectify the situation right away.
For further information, questions, and inquires, you can contact the Host Family Coordinator,

2015 Season Suggestions

1. Take the player grocery shopping in the first few days of his arrival. This not only allows him to share his
food preferences, but provides for a way to spend some time getting to know him better.
2. Clearly communicate house rules to the player staying with you and your family.
3. Show the player around the San Luis Obispo area (refer to destination amenities).
4. Some host families create a scrapbook of photos and newspaper clipping from the season as a gift to the
player when he leaves at the end of the season.
5. Have fun. Make this experience a fun, memorable, and life learning one for you, your family, and your
Blues player.
