PART A
(6 x 5 = 30)
Answer ALL the Questions
Explain the phenomenon of wandering of energy taking a system of two degrees of freedom as an
example.
What is DAlemberts principle? Explain how the principle is employed in vibration problems.
Develop an approximate equation for the amplitude of steady forced vibration, if the damping
force is proportional to the square of the velocity.
Derive the orthogonality condition of natural modes of vibration in axial direction.
Explain the principle underlying the Rayleighs method used to determine the fundamental
frequency of multi-degrees of freedom system.
Explain Matrix Iteration Method.
PART B
(5 x 10 = 50)
Answer ALL the Questions
A multi degree freedom system is as shown in the figure.1 if the 100kg mass is displaced to right
by 10mm and left to vibrate, calculate the equation of the motion of the masses.
(or)
A multi degree freedom system is as shown in the figure.1 If the 200kg mass is acted upon by a
force of 100*sin(2t) N, calculate the equation of the steady state motion for the masses.

Figure.1
(i)Derive the equation of motion for the vibration of a SDOF system for >1.
(ii)Explain Coulomb damping.
(or)
The vibration in the vertical direction of an airplane and its wings can be modeled as a three-dof
system as shown in Figure 2 with one mass corresponding to the right wing, one mass for the left
wing, and one mass for the fuselage. The stiness connecting the three masses corresponds to that
of the wing and is a function of the modulus E of the wing, where, E = 60109N/m2, L=2m, m =
3000 kg and I = 5.210-6m4.
(a) Calculate the natural frequencies and mode shapes. Plot the mode shapes.
(b) Solve for the free response of the system. Let the initial displacements correspond to a gust of
wind that causes an initial condition x (0) = 0 and x(0) = [0.2 0 0]T m.

A simple supported beam is having span of 10m and loaded by a dynamic load of 20*sin(2t) kN at
the mid point of the beam. If the unit mass of the beam is 200 kg/m and the flexural rigidity of the

beam is 200kN-m2, obtain the equation of the motion of the mid point of the beam. Assume the

derived through eigen value analysis only. All the masses are equal to m and all the spring
constants are equal to k.
