Soundtrack

Music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja, who reportedly composed for the lm taking only one-fth of his actual remuneration.
In the biographical book Conversations with Mani Ratnam, the director revealed that Balu Mahendra introduced him to Ilaiyaraaja. Ratnam told Raja that he was
doing a Kannada lm with a very small budget but wanted
Raja to compose the music, while also confessing that he
couldn't aord to pay the latters market price. Raja apparently didn't bat an eyelid and agreed to do the movie
for one-fourth or one-fth the amount he was getting at
the time.[2]
The composer would go on to collaborate with the director for 9 more of the latters lms, including acclaimed classics like Mouna Raagam, Nayagan, Anjali
and Thalapathy.
