MENTORING HIGHLIGHTS

Mentoring Nature and Scope

Helping others achieve their long term goals

Helping people plot out their career paths with the right scale and/or skills
Sharing knowledge and Experiences relevant to the defined 2-3 goals of the
mentee

Steps:
1. Agree on the process:
a) When and how often to have the mentoring
b) What topics to cover in line with the defined goals
c) Communication channels face to face, email, Skype, etc
2. Allow the mentee to define 2-3 life goals clearly to be achieved in a definite
length of time - 1 yr, 2 yr, 3yr or more. Mentees usually have very many
goals. Help them reduce the goals to a manageable number (2 to 3).
3. Focus on the skills, experiences, and the milestones one has to develop in
order to achieve the defined goals. Map out on a calendar to show what has
to be achieved by what date.
4. Let the mentee identify her current Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and
Threats (obstacles) regarding the process of achieving the defined goals
5. Give the mentee some assignment on step 4.
6. *Design a fill in form to capture the desired feedback in steps 3 and
4.
7. Learn the names of the mentee and show them that you are concerned about
their goals. Even just finding out how theyre progressing on with their goals
on a day to day basis is comforting enough for them.
8. Besides sharing experience stories and knowledge about the goals, probe the
mentee with questions. This will give you chance to listen to their stories and
at the same time to give them a chance to speak.
Example Probing question:
a) Have you had or heard about a similar experience to the one I have
shared with you?
b) What strategy do you think are necessary to achieve the defined
goals?
c) What do you think are the resources needed to move towards the
desired goals?
d) What are the implications of taking certain steps (Be specific)? Let
them tell you what they know.
* Design a form in which the mentee can fill in a feedback on
your probing questions.
9. Make or suggest useful connections for additional help on issues handled or
other issues you may not be in position to handle. For example you can
suggest to them to join certain groups you are sure are developmental.
10.Be frank! Be authentic! You need to give feedback even when it is a difficult
one. Tell them when they need to hear something developmental. Make
comments on what they already think will work for them.

11.Recall how you used to think at the age and situation similar to that of the
mentee. Build on the lessons you learnt.
12.Do a monitoring and evaluation to see whether the mentee is making
progress.
