BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is an extensive comprehension of various dimensions of Islam
as a religion and a force behind one of the greatest civilizations of the history of
mankind. Since the University level degree demands a broader perspective of
knowledge, topics of highly intellectual significance like: basic concepts of Islam,

introduction to the fundament sources, Islamic values and ethics as well as the
concept of personality development, various aspects of Islamic Sharia, and
development of Islamic legal tradition will be covered. A brief study of the
Biography of The Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) also forms a basic component of
the course. In addition, students will be introduced to the fundamental tenets of
modern Western thought which will furnish an academic background for the
comparative study of Islam and modern secular ideas regarding man and his
destiny in this world.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
To develop a deeper understanding of basic concepts of Islam.
To provide a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental sources of Islam.
To promote a critical and rational approach in studying Islamic Sharia and Islamic legal
tradition (fiqh).
To emphasize the importance of, and elaborate the core ideas vis-a-vis personality
development in an Islamic framework.
To encourage the spirit of free inquiry into the claims of modern secular thought that seek
to challenge the fundamental tenets of religion, especially Islam.

Students must complete each component of the assessment to the satisfaction of the course
