COLUMBUS Ohio legislators

joined a growing list of
states in dumping controversial state-mandated tests widely criticized by educators as
more bother than theyre
worth. In signing the
State of Ohios twoyear budget on Tuesday,
Governor John Kasich
also put paid to PARCC
testing.
Produced by the Partnership for
Assessment of Readiness for College
and Careers, these standardized tests
were developed with the intent of measuring whether students are on track
to be successful in college and their
careers, according to the PARCC
website. Implemented as an aspect
of federal Common Core standards,

the tests immediately came under

fire last fall when they were introduced in Ohio as part of an 11-state
pilot program. Adding fuel to the fire,
once testing had begun in earnest,
teachers and administrators
complained not only about
technological
glitches
with these computer-based
Mathematics and English
tests, but, more tellingly,
about their difficulty and
their time-intensive nature.
Twice during the 2014-15
school year, Ohio public
school students in grades
3 to 11 participated in
the test. As a consequence of these
experiences, school boards across the
state expressed their dissatisfaction
to Ohios Superintendent of Public
Instruction Richard Ross and even
went so far as to enact resolutions
refusing to participate in any further PARCC testing pending greater
assessments and signifant improve-

VAN WERT The first marriage license was issued
to a same-sex couple in Van Wert County on Wednesday
morning.
The Van Wert County Probate Court confirmed
Valerie Jones and Jessica Jones were at the office as soon
as it opened at 8:30 a.m. making them the first same-sex
couple to receive their marriage license since Fridays
U.S. Supreme Court ruling to allow same-sex marriages.
A second same-sex couple was also issued a marriage
license around 9:15 a.m.
We had been talking about it since the decision came
down, Valerie said. She would say stuff like, You
know when we get married, I want bologna sandwiches
at the wedding, or something, and Id say, What are you
talking about when we get married, I havent been asked
yet? Wed giggle and move on with our conversation.
Well yesterday [Tuesday], she finally got down on
one knee and asked me to marry her, and I said, Well of
course I will.
Valerie and Jessica, both current residents of Van
Wert, met 17 years ago and have been a couple for 16 of
those years. Valerie, a Columbus native, moved to Van
Wert with her two children, Michael and Isabelle, where
Jessica helped raise them.
They had a union ceremony 14 years ago in Columbus,
but the union did not come with equal benefits, recognition, or legality that a marriage does.

ments to the tests.

Kevin Wolfe, superintendent
of Delphos City Schools, was both
unsurprised and pleased by the governors action.
Its a good thing, he said. There
was too much time dedicated to
PARCC and that was the biggest argument that legislators were hearing.
When youre spending that much time
preparing for a test, what real learning is taking place? I think that the
legislators finally heard and listened
to the superintendents, administrators,
teachers and parents.
While all PARCC testing has been
suspended, this does not put an end to
Common Core and other standardized
testing. Instead, the new law dictates a
single testing period, shorter tests and
quicker turn-around times for results
results from PARCC tests taken
this past school year wont be available until next fall.

VAN WERT What began as a nice

start to spring for area farmers has turned
into a complete disaster with substantial
loss of crops across Van Wert County.
Flooding rains throughout the month
of June has caused thousands of acres
across the county to remain bare with
no chance of planting at this point, Van
Wert County Emergency Management
Director Rick McCoy said. As for the
crops that are in the ground, many plants
have died from the excessive water and
many surviving fields may have little to
no crops at all to harvest in the fall. The
area has seen localized floods before but
never in the history of Van Wert County
has there been a month long event that has
taken such a heavy toll on the farmers.
For the month of June, McCoy measured 15.71 inches of rainfall at his office
in Van Wert. This surpasses the previous
record of 10.56 inches set back in 1993.
But he went on to say that the area across
Van Wert received the least amount of rain
in the county. Areas across the southern
and northern parts of the county received
between 20 and 24 inches for the month.
This is just unreal considering our yearly
average total runs at around 36 inches and
the area just received between half to two
thirds of the total in one month.
McCoy advised the culprit was long
coming in the form of El Nino. Last
year, an El Nino Watch was issued for
the Pacific Ocean with signs an El Nino
would develop. But winter came and

went with no further development. In

early spring, NOAA issued an El Nino
Advisory indicating it was strengthening
and the affects would be felt across the
country. All indications pointed to a wet
spring and summer with temperatures
below average.
McCoy said we watched a Bermuda
High set up and its location combined
with a persistent upper trough over the
west has been drawing an enhanced flow
of deep gulf moisture into the southern
plains and has been transported up into
the Ohio Valley. Research of past El Nino
years would indicate that July will have
above normal precipitation and moderate
temperatures normally in the 80s.
Local communities and area residents have been hit hard with flooding
issues this past month. Although all creeks
and streams have been out of bank at
some point in June, it was the St. Marys
River that runs through Willshire and the
Jennings Creek outside of Delphos that
really gave us fits, said McCoy. Around
24,000 sand bags were used in Willshire
to protect businesses and homes when
the St. Marys crested at 25.1 feet several
weeks ago. And many people had homes
surrounded by water or coming into basements where there were never water problems before.
The ground is so saturated that water
isnt getting away and then when you get
a three- to four-inch rain overnight, there
is no way to stop the flash flooding that
occurs, McCoy concluded.

friends, and a brilliant journalism career culminating
in his twenty-two years as
anchor of the NBC Nightly
News and as bestselling
author. But in the summer of
2013, when back pain led him
to the doctors at the Mayo
Clinic, his run of good luck
was interrupted. He received

shocking news: He had multiple myeloma, a treatable

but incurable blood cancer.
Friends had always referred
to Brokaws lucky star, but
as he writes in this inspiring memoir, Turns out that
star has a dimmer switch.
Brokaw takes us through
all the seasons and stages
of this surprising year, the
emotions, discoveries, setbacks, and strugglestimes
of denial, acceptance, turning
points, and courage. After his
diagnosis, Brokaw began to
keep a journal, approaching
this new stage of his life in
a familiar role: as a journalist, determined to learn
as much as he could about
his condition, to report the
story, and help others facing
similar battles. That journal
became the basis of this wonderfully written memoir, the
story of a man coming to
terms with his own mortality,
contemplating what means
the most to him now, and
reflecting on what has meant
the most to him throughout
his life. Brokaw also pauses to look back on some of
the important moments in his
career: memories of Nelson
Mandela, the Dalai Lama, the
fall of the Berlin Wall, the
morning of September 11,
2001, in New York City, and
more. Through it all, Brokaw
writes in the warm, intimate, natural voice of one of
Americas most beloved journalists, giving us Brokaw on
Brokaw, and bringing us with
him as he navigates pain,
procedures, drug regimens,
and physical rehabilitation.
Brokaw also writes about the
importance of patients taking
an active role in their own
treatment, and of the vital
role of caretakers and coordinated care.

Pass the tissues: Ohio makes allergy top 10

BY OLIVIA VELAZQUEZ

COLUMBUS Sickweather, a company that provides

a sickness forecast, similar to a weather forecast, recently
published a study that ranked Ohio as the 8th worst state in
seasonal allergies from May 2014 to 2015. Ohios ranking in
the Sickweather study doesnt surprise local resident Belia
Spradlin of Vanlue. When I get out of this area, my symptoms pretty much disappear, she said.
Dr. Sridhar Guduri of the Allergy and Asthma Clinics of
Ohio in Columbus said, No, it doesnt surprise me, because
[of] almost all of the states in the Midwest, because of the
[Ohio] Valley.
Dr. Summit Shah of Premier Allergy, an allergy clinic also
in Columbus, agreed that its because of our geography that
Ohio is plagued by seasonal allergies. He said a lot of tree
pollen and grass and weed pollen account for this, because
plant and mold spores cause allergies. Allergic reactions, Dr.
Shah said, are then exacerbated by our areas farmland and
industrialization, because carbon dioxide levels can make
those [allergies] worse. When you have pollution, like a factory, or a plant, or cigarette smokeyou get irritant reactions.
Another problem, he said, is that our society is too clean.
That problem isnt limited to Ohio. As a consequence of that,
were shifting our immune response towards the allergic,
added Shah.
The latter is known as the hygiene hypothesis. An article
published by the FDA cites epidemiologic studies, noting,
allergic diseases and asthma are more likely to occur when the
incidence and levels of endotoxin in the home are low. With
cleaner homes, seasonal allergies are expected to increase in
the future.
Seasonal allergies typically occur when the seasons change,
but cause problems year-round, including runny nose, eye irri-

tation, headaches, coughing and sneezing. Over-the-counter

and prescribed treatments like Zyrtec or Claritin, as well as
cough drops, saline solutions, rescue inhalers and eye drops
are used. Premier Allergy and the Allergy & Asthma Clinics
of Ohio both utilize the best treatment, as Dr. Shah calls it.
You can become desensitized [to allergens] through a
series of shots where you build up your immune system to
get a tolerance, he said. Its a time commitment, initially
Were injecting [sufferers] with the pollens, the molds, with
the very allergens that theyre allergic to. We have to go very
slowly.
Dr. Guduri says around 30 percent of his patients receive
immunotherapies for their allergies.
Treatment costs add up. Belia Spradlin says she spends
about $50 a month treating her allergies, depending on their
severity. Other Northwest Ohio residents report spending
between $3 and $15 monthly. Dr. Guduri says that a person
taking medication daily can spend $100 monthly during
peak allergy seasons spring and fall without insurance.
The trend in insurance plans is, as he said, They [insurance
companies] pay less, and the people pay more. According to
Dr. Guduri, the decision of how much to spend and treatment
options depend highly on the severity of the persons symptoms.
The findings are supported by a report published by the
Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. The report,
Spring Allergy Capitals 2015, ranks cities using Prevalence
Data, Seasonal Pollen, Allergy Medicine Utilization per
Patient, and the number of Board Certified Allergists per
patient. Ohio had seven of the top 100 allergic cities ranked,
with Dayton as 8th and Toledo as 32nd.
According to Dr. Guduri, preventative measures for seasonal allergies include Trying not to be outside between
six and ten in the morning, taking medication before being
exposed to pollen, and taking a shower once youre done
mowing the lawn.

Fiction
Fateful Lightning by Jeff
Shaara
November 1864: As the
Civil War rolls into its fourth
bloody year, the tide has
turned decidedly in favor
of the Union. A grateful
Abraham Lincoln responds
to Ulysses S. Grants successes by bringing the general east, promoting Grant to
command the entire Union
war effort, while William
Tecumseh Sherman now
directs the Federal forces that
occupy all of Tennessee. In
a massive surge southward,
Sherman conquers the city of
Atlanta, sweeping aside the
Confederate army under the
inept leadership of General
John Bell Hood. Pushing
through northern Georgia,
Shermans legendary March
to the Sea shoves away
any Rebel presence, and
by Christmas 1864 the city
of Savannah falls into the
hands of Uncle Billy. Now
there is but one direction for
Sherman to go. In his way
stands the last great hope for
the Southern cause, General
Joseph E. Johnston. .

Lane finds the glimpse into
these gilded worlds fascinating, and loves the reward of
exceeding the expectations
of their often-demanding
owners. When she is called
to assist in redecorating a
modest townhouse in Bergen

is unusual. Then she learns
the home belongs to the wife

He dropped out of sight just
before it was discovered that
the $5 billion dollars in the

had vanished. Bennett had
gone out on his sailboat in the
Caribbean.
Was it suicide or had he
staged his disappearance?
The scandal around his
name has not died down. His
clients and the federal gov-

money and find Bennett if he

to find herself moved by Mrs.
Bennetts calm dignity and
apparently sincere belief in
her husbands innocence.
Gradually, Lane finds herself
drawn to Eric, the Bennetts

is not guilty. Lane doesnt
know that the closer she gets
to the Bennetts, the more she
puts her life and her daughters life in jeopardy.

The organization further projects that the marijuana industry in Ohio will create roughly 10,000 jobs and as many as

In the Waiting

My son got his learners

a moment that I have dreaded
for years. I was certain that
this kid who ran at everything
full tilt, who crashed into
walls and jumped out of trees
just for the thrill of it, was not
meant to drive. EVER!
I kept postponing this for
as long as possible. I told him
he had to earn all As and Bs
on his report card. He did.
I told him he had to be
more responsible. He needed
to start showing me that he
didnt need me to be there to
remind him of what chores
he needed to do and when
he could step up and help
out without being reminded.
He has, well better than
he was, I wasnt expecting
miracles.
I finally relented.
I was convinced that I
was the worst person in the
world to teach him to drive.
I get frightened too easy and
I anticipate danger at every
turn. Quite simply, I worry
too much.
I have put too much effort
into keeping him safe to put
him in charge of a 4,000pound vehicle on a road populated by other equally large

of our windows. The thermometer showed 54 degrees.
Not really normal June temperatures.
Yesterday we canned 45
quarts of rhubarb juice from
30 pounds of rhubarb. Our
friend Barb and my sisters
Verena and Susan gave us
the rhubarb. I have rhubarb
plants, but never enough to
make a years supply of rhubarb juice. I think the children
have already emptied two
gallons of it! Rhubarb juice
is a good thirst-quencher on
hot days.
Joseph, 12, and Kevin, 9,
were tilling and weeding the
garden, so they wanted rhubarb juice when they took
a break. Joseph is a good
gardener and seems to take
an interest in caring for the
garden. Verena, 17, keeps my
flowers watered, and they are
looking very healthy. If it is
left to me to water them, they
usually die of thirst. I can
make things grow in the garden, but flowers dont seem
to do well for me. I love
flowers, so I am glad someone has taken over the duty
to care for them!
My husband, Joe, brought
in our first hot peppers from
the garden tonight. Our tomato plants are loaded with

tomatoes, and everything else

looks like it is doing great.
We are all done with work
for the evening. Im sitting
out here on the porch writing this. Its a very cool and
peaceful evening. Oh, the
many blessings God gives
us. We have so much to be
thankful for, and so often we
take it for granted. Let us
remember to thank our wonderful God daily for all our
blessings.
This column was pushed
off until this evening, but I
feel like we accomplished a
lot today. The girls are cleaning their closets and getting
ready to start some major
cleaning in the upstairs bedrooms. Elizabeth is gradually
packing the things she wont
need for now. She will move
them over to Timothys house
for after their wedding. It
gives me a sad feeling, but
I dont want to take the joy
away from her. I remember
the exciting time of preparing
for my wedding to Joe. With
Gods help, I will get used to
my firstborn leaving home
to start her life with her husband. Im sure a lot of parents
have dealt with this feeling.
I think I will call it a
night. I was up until midnight
last night, waiting until the
last of the rhubarb juice was
cold-packed. Our neighbor
has hooked our water over to
solar power. It had previously
run by a propane motor. From
now on, the sun will power
our water! It seems different
to not hear the motor kick in
when the water pressure gets
low. Since the water was shut
off due to the switch, I had a

late start canning the juice, so

thats why it was so late until
I was done.
A reader shared this recipe
for green tomato bread with
me. She said her family likes
this bread better than zucchini bread. She grates her green
tomatoes in the fall and puts
them in the freezer to make
this in the winter months.
Green Tomato Bread
2 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
2 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 cup chopped nuts
2 cups grated green tomatoes
Mix sugar, oil, eggs and
vanilla together. Add flour,
cinnamon, salt, baking soda
and baking powder. Mix
well, and then add nuts and
tomatoes. Pour into two
greased loaf pans. Bake at
350 degrees for 50 minutes or
until done.

PUTNAM COUNTY With the excess

rain/flooding and wheat to be harvested, farmers are thinking about delayed planting (unharvested) OR planting/replanting for a quick forage or cash crop. There are four major types of
cover crops including grasses, legumes, brassicas, and others. Major grasses include oats,
wheat, cereal rye, annual ryegrass, Sudansorghum, and barley. These grasses are often
grown before soybeans, may absorb left over
nitrogen from fertilizer or manure, are good
erosion fighters, and reduce soil compaction.
Sorghum Sudan (seeded at 30#/A) can be harvested this summer 1-2X if planted soon, oats
(32-64# or 1-2 bushel) may produce 1-3 dry
tons of forage in late fall, and cereal rye (60120#/A or 1-2 bushels) may produce 3-4 dry
tons if harvested next spring. Under delayed
planting and crop insurance rules, cover crops
need be left unharvested in the field.
Sorghum Sudan is a summer annual that
dies with the first frost so it needs to be seeded as soon as possible. Mow or chop after
it grows 3 feet tall to promote tillering with
5-9X more root growth after cutting. Oats
winter kills with temperatures below 20F, has
good root growth, easy to plant and manage,
and no need for herbicide in spring. Wheat
seed (1 bushel) is easy to find, however; it is
harder to kill in spring and has a poorer root
system than cereal rye. Avoid planting wheat
before Hessian fly free date to reduce pathogen
or disease problems. Triticale (winter annual
drilled at 50-90#/A) and Teff (summer annual
drilled 4-8#/A shallow) are good cover crops
for forages. Barley (winter annual) makes
excellent cattle feed for forage or grain. Barley
(drilled at 50-75#/A) may be harvested two to
three weeks before wheat and is good for producing double crop soybeans next year. Pearl
Millet (summer annual drilled at 10-15#/A)
is fast-growing, good for short growing windows, good for heat or drought conditions and
excellent for grazing or forage value. Cereal
rye improves soil structure, suppresses weeds,
and makes a good forage.
Legumes produce nitrogen, have a large
taproot, and are generally grown before corn.
Austrian winter peas (inoculated and drilled
at 20-24#/A)) grow five feet long but generally die with first frost however they may add

100-120#N to soil. Cowpeas (30-40#/A) is

planted after wheat, needs very little moisture
to germinate, grows well in summer heat but
dies with first frost. Cowpeas may accumulate
125-135 #N if inoculated and work well in
mixtures because they are shade tolerant. Sunn
hemp (summer annual drilled at 10-15#/A))
may get 10-15 feet tall with yellow flowers,
and may produce 200#N (marble size nodules
if inoculated), works well in mixture, but dies
with frost.
Crimson clover (10-20#/A) works well
in mixtures with Daikon radish (same size
seed). If inoculated, crimson clover can produce 100-125#N but needs to be planted by
early September to maximize growth. Crimson
clover should survive most winters and be
allowed to grow as long as possible in spring
to maximize N potential (bright red crimson
flower). Red Clover (12-15#/A) tolerates wet
soils and can be included in mixtures producing 75-100# N but has a higher C:N ratio so it
takes longer to release N than other legumes.
Sweet Clover (8-10#/A) has a deep tap root,
tolerates wet soils, produces 125-200#N,
improves soil drainage and suppresses weeds.
Brassicas include Daikon (white root) radishes (3-4#/A) and turnips (1-3#/A) and are
good for improving water infiltration and soil
structure, kill or suppress broadleaf weeds,
and they accumulate soil nutrients (N-P-K).
Radishes die at 15F and have bad smell when
they decompose. They fumigate the soil and
promote earthworms. The root is 80 percent
water and decays quickly when soils warm up.
Radish grows well under cooler wetter conditions in late summer and early fall and works
well in cover crop mixtures. Turnips are a winter annual with shorter taproot and bulb that
can be grazed. Other brassicas include rape
(3-5#/A) and kale (2-5#/A) which are small
seeded winter annuals that survive the winter
and can be planted in mid-October.
Other cover crops include buckwheat (2035#/A), a summer annual, good for surface
compaction, attracts beneficial insects and
honey bees, and is often used in mixtures.
Sunflowers (summer annuals drilled 5-10#/A)
with deep roots that loosen soils, works well
with peas or climbing cover crops, and attract
bees and beneficial insects. Cover crops are
often seeded in mixtures. To determine seeding
rate in mixtures, divide the full seeding rate by
the number of crops in the mixture to get an
approximate seeding rate for each cover crop.

Kalida squeaks by Tigers 1-0

to open summer tournament
By Charlie Warnimont
DHI Media Sports Editor
HOLGATE Kalida hit the ball hard
Wednesday evening during their District 2
ACME sectional game with Holgate.
However, the Wildcats did not have a hit to
show for their efforts.
Holgate pitcher Dylan Szabo threw a
no-hitter against the Wildcats but absorbed
the loss as Kalida scored an unearned run in
the bottom of the sixth for a 1-0 win over the
Tigers.
The win advances Kalida to a 6 p.m. game
today against Ottawa-Glandorf at the home of
the Titans.
Holgate will face the Columbus Grove/
Miller City loser Friday at 6 p.m. at Miller
City.
Although Szabo pitched a no-hitter he
only had one easy inning, that being the first
inning when he retired the Wildcats in order.
Although he worked out of trouble in the
second through fifth innings, he was unable
to escape trouble in the sixth after two errors
gave Kalida a pair of base runners.
The Kalida sixth started innocently enough
with a popup to shortstop. Jeffrey Knueve
followed the out as he reached on an error
at second base and he took second on a wild
pitch. Austin Klausing reached on an error by
the shortstop as Knueve took third base. With
runners on the corners, Kalida attempted a

suicide squeeze with Noah Lambert at the

plate. Lambert fouled off the first pitch and as
Szabo was delivering the second pitch he was
called for a balk that allowed Knueve to score
and Klausing to take second.
After a pop foul to first base, Klausing
took third base on a wild pitch, but he was
stranded there as the next batter grounded out
to shortstop.
Kalida pitcher Trent Gerding closed out
the win with three groundball outs in the
top of the seventh. Gerding retired the final
eight batters he faced after the Tigers Garrett
Blakely singled with one out in the fifth and
took second on an error.
Gerding was strong on the mound for
Kalida as he allowed just two hits with four
strikeouts and no walks. Holgates other hit
was a first inning, two-out double by Jake
Grimm, who was left there as the next batter grounded out. After the double Gerding
retired 11 straight batters before Blakelys
single.
Meanwhile Szabo had to battle as he
stranded two Kalida base runners in both of
the second and third innings and one each in
the fourth and fifth innings.
Szabo had four strikeouts, walked two and
hit one batter.

The New York Mets hitters werent exactly torching the league over the first

the wrong direction, bad

The Boston Red Sox are on
the cusp of being completely
out of the playoff race in the
American League. The lack
of pitching has been the primary culprit for the Red Sox
woes, but designated hitter
David Ortiz is in the midst
of a struggle of his own. This

20 home runs and 13 stolen bases. Albert Pujols and
Derrek Lee have done it three
times each. Ryan Klesko has
pulled it off twice and Joey

If Goldy reaches 30 home

DELPHOS It was, to
say the least, a long game
two and a half hours featuring
24 runs, 20 hits, 13 walks and
eight errors. Lincolnview,
however, survived with a
15-9 win over Delphos St.
Johns in the regular season
finale for both ACME teams.
After one inning it seemed
that the game would be even
longer than it turned out to be,
as both teams batted around
in that frame. Lincolnview
scored seven, three earned,
in the top half on three hits,
the big one being a threerun triple by right fielder
Cole Schmersal, along with
five walks and two Delphos
errors. After two were out,
Jay starter Eric Vogt was
relieved by third baseman
Josh Warnecke, and the
bases were left jammed when
catcher Tyler Richeys long
blast to center was grabbed
by Connor Hulihan.
However, the home team
came back with four, all
earned, in the bottom of the
first off of Lincolnview starter Derek Youtsey. They left
the three tying runs on base
when shortstop Seth Linder,
bidding for his second hit of
the inning, crushed a fly ball
to deep left that was flagged
down by the Lancers Jalen
Roberts.
It remained 7-4 until the
bottom of the third when St.
Johns started the inning with
a single, walk, and hit batsman
to load the sacks. Lancer ace
Jalen Roberts then replaced
Youtsey and appeared to have
escaped by fanning the next
two Blue Jays. However, an
RBI walk, a two-run double
by Vogt, another walk, and a
two-run single by Jess Ditto
gave Delphos a 9-7 lead after
three.
The visitors scored one
in the fourth to get within
9-8, then scored the three
game-winners, all unearned,
in the fifth. Second baseman

Cubs Hitters, Mets Pitchers on the Rise in National League

By Charlie Miller
Athlon Sports Baseball Editor

Last week, I presented my

glimpse into the future and
selected what could be the
American League All-Star
team in 2018.
Now its time for that same
exercise with the National

for the remainder of the
decade.
RF Giancarlo Stanton,
Miami
No player will hit more
bombs in 2018 than Stanton.
3B Kris Bryant, Chicago
Yep, hes for real.
C Buster Posey, San

Francisco
Some time soon after
2018, Posey will probably be
a full-time first baseman. But
in three years, baseball will
play the next All-Star Game
without the Cardinals Yadier
Molina.

CF Andrew McCutchen, Pittsburgh

The fans will continue to elect McCutchen
and Stanton even if Joc Pedersen begins to
pass them in production.
SS Addison Russell, Chicago
Since were looking three years down the
road, Im going with a Starlin Castro trade and
permanent move of Russell to short.
SP Matt Harvey, New York
The Mets have shown other teams how to
rehabilitate Tommy John patients. Harvey will
be pitching in his contract year in 2018.
Bench
C Kyle Schwarber, Chicago
The only question will be whether
Schwarber will be behind the plate in 2018.
1B Freddie Freeman, Atlanta
Freeman will be fan a favorite in Atlanta
for many years.
2B Joe Panik, San Francisco
Solid and clutch both aptly describe Panik.
3B Nolan Arenado, Colorado
Perhaps, the finest fielding third baseman
ever, Arenado, who is improving offensively,
will be the lone Rockies rep.
3B Maikel Franco, Philadelphia
The rising star will represent Philadelphia
but will be an All-Star in his own right.
3B Todd Frazier, Cincinnati
If Frazier is still in Cincinnati, hell represent the Reds.
SS Andrelton Simmons, Atlanta
The best defensive shortstop in the game is
a nice luxury to have late in the game.
OF Carlos Gomez, Milwaukee
Gomez is another trade chip between now
and 2018 but someone has to represent the
Brewers.
OF Joc Pederson, Los Angeles
Once Pederson adjusts and begins making
more consistent contact, hell enjoy a nice run
of All-Star appearances.
OF Gregory Polanco, Pittsburgh
It may not happen by 2018 but soon thereafter, Polanco will usurp McCutchen as the
Pirates best outfielder.

TURN BACK THE CLOCK

July 2, 1977
Jim Spencer of the Chicago White Sox
becomes the only player other than Lou
Gehrig to have two games of eight RBIs.
The first baseman, who also had an 8-RBI
game on May 14, 1977, begins his day by
grounding into a 3-6-3 double play. He follows that with a grand slam, a three-run homer
and a run-scoring single.
TRIVIA CORNER
On June 26, Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse
pitched six innings, earning a win over the
Minnesota Twins. Lohse became the 14th
pitcher who has beaten all 30 teams. Can you
name the only other two active pitchers who
have wins over all 30 teams?
TRIVIA ANSWER:
A.J. Burnett of Pittsburgh and Dan Haren
of Miami are the only other two active pitchers with wins over all 30 teams.

ATHLON SPORTS POWER RANKING

Kyle Busch, still recovering from a February crash, wins at Sonoma

By Geoffrey Miller
Athlon Sports contributor

Kyle Busch walked into

Victory Lane on Sunday at
Sonoma Raceway, but not
to prove a point. A flat tire
caused by a celebratory
burnout kept his No. 18
from making the sharp turn.
So Busch climbed out, left
his car just outside the plaza,
and dove into the celebration
with his team. The moment
said a lot.
Sundays race marked
Buschs first Sprint Cup
win since a disastrous crash
in February that left a broken bone protruding from
his right leg and a fracture
in his left foot. From the
injuries to Sundays race,
the span was just 18 weeks.
The win, of course, wasnt
easy. Busch admitted that
the heavy braking required
around Sonomas 11-turn
road course took a toll. On
Friday during practice, Busch
said, the pain in his legs was

about a seven on a 10-point

scale. He treated his legs with
ice extensively that night and
again Saturday night.
I knew it was going to
get painful and I was going
to have to power through it,
Busch said. But you know,
when youve got fresh tires
and seven laps to go and you
see the checkered flag waiting for you, you forget about
all those things.
Busch had the fresh tires
thanks to a pit strategy that
was buoyed by well-timed
caution flags, and he used
them to easily overtake
Jimmie Johnson for the lead
with five laps left. He then
held off brother Kurt for
his 30th career Sprint Cup
win. It was Buschs first
win in over a year and the
first step required for the
Joe Gibbs Racing driver to
make an unexpected entry
to NASCARs Chase for the
Sprint Cup postseason fight.
It was also the first time that
brothers Busch Kyle and

Kurt finished 1-2 in a

Sprint Cup race since both
became full-time drivers in
2005.
NASCARs postseason
requires that eligible drivers
attempt all races and win a
race (while maintaining a
top-30 position in the point
standings) in order to qualify
for one of 16 spots. In the
event 16 drivers fail to a win
a race, the postseason field
is filled out with the drivers
highest in the point standings
without a win. With the win,
Busch now must climb from
his current position in the
point standings (36th, 125
points behind 30th) to 30th
in the final 10 regular-season
races of the year.
Its a steep challenge.
But Busch isnt one to think
things are too insurmountable these days. It was barely
three months ago that he was
mobile only in a wheelchair.
Buschs big break Sunday
actually came early in the
110-lap race. Due to the long

lap times at Sonoma, pitting

during green flag conditions
allows teams to avoid getting
lapped. Crew chief Adam
Stevens brought Busch to pit
road on Lap 20 before the
scheduled stops of many others and then caught a break
when the yellow came out
for David Gillilands crash
on Lap 23.
Busch stayed on track
during the caution period as
most of the leaders pitted,
cycling toward the front in a
big track position gain with
nearly fresh tires. He soon
took the lead for 12 laps just
after the restart. A similar pit
sequence again moved Busch
near the front with 30 laps
to go when Carl Edwards
and David Ragan wrecked in
Turn 8.
The call that eventually
made the race win possible
for Busch came during the
races final caution when
Casey Mears broke an axle
near Turn 11. Leader Jimmie
Johnson stayed out, while

several behind him pitted for

fresh tires. Busch emerged
second to Clint Bowyer off
pit road in the sequence and
lined up 7th on the restart.
We needed to come in
and get tires, and that was
going to be our best chance
to win the race, and I figured
there was going to be a lot of
guys that came behind us but
not as many that did come,
Busch said. I didnt expect
that many. It gave us pretty
good track position.
Bowyer scuffled with Matt
Kenseth on the restart and
opened the door for Busch.
After pushing through,
Buschs fresh tires simply
overwhelmed those on worn
tires ahead. Busch passed
Johnson, who faded to sixth
at the finish on his old tires,
on Lap 105.
Without that pit stop, we
definitely wouldnt have been
in this position, we would
have been fighting off the
guys behind us like Jimmie
and those guys were, Busch

said. Great call by Adam

Stevens and great pit work by
my team.

The Herald - 9

Avoiding the Near Occasion of Sin

The Catholic prayer, the Act of Contrition, ends with a firm resolution to sin no
more, and to avoid the near occasion of sin. This is good counsel for those of us
with less than perfect willpower to resist doing wrong, and it harmonizes with the
Lords Prayer, which asks God to Lead us not into temptation. Strictly speaking,
God does not tempt us, but our daily circumstances certainly do, and we would do
well to avoid those circumstances that tempt us to sin. If we know that a certain
person will try our patience and tempt us to say or do something unkind, then perhaps we should avoid that person, or at least try to interact with him or her when
our resolve is strong. We all know that certain things can be an occasion of sin, a
situation that makes sinning much more likely, and part of leading a holy life is to
avoid those circumstances, at least until our will has become more resolutely good.
We should be aware also that our resolve can be weakened by a long hard day, so
be especially cautious when you are tired.
Christopher Simon

When tempted, no one should say, God is tempting me. For

God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each
person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil
desire and enticed.
James 1:13-14

Our local churches invite you to join them for their activities and services.

From the Delphos Canal Commission

Gonna Take A
Sentimental Journey

The Second World War was the seminal

event of the 20th century. The war involved
more than 60 countries and more than 1.7 billion people across the planet. Yet every day,
the number of people with first-hand accounts
of this history changing event decreases. In
the United States alone we lose 429 veterans
of the war every single day. Of the 16,000,000
men and women who served the United States
during World War II, only 885,000 survive.
In an effort to preserve the memories,
experiences and stories of these men and
women, the Delphos Canal Commission is
holding a World War II Roundtable. On

Sunday, July 12 from 1-3 p.m., the museum

will host four local veterans of the war: Art
Grothouse, Harold Liebrecht, Burl Morris
and Omer Pothast.
For two hours, well ask questions, jog
memories and share experiences of what it
was like to go from a young civilian to a fullfledged member of the United States military
fighting in the greatest and costliest war in
history. Well learn the sights and sounds of
boot camp, the smells and raw emotions of
battle and the quiet thoughts of peace and
returning home to family.
Join us to relive these memories with those
who actually experienced them.
The World War II Roundtable will be
held at the Delphos Canal Museum at 241 N.
Main St. in downtown Delphos. The public
is invited to attend. Seating is limited so you
are invited and encouraged to bring your own
chair. After the Roundtable, you are invited
to tour the museum, including the Military
Exhibit and see our numerous World War II
artifacts. Also please greet our veterans, share
a handshake and a story and maybe get an
autograph or two.
This World War II Roundtable is the first
of what hopefully will be a regular event at
the Museum. We are hoping to record the history of Delphos, our country and our world by
talking to those who experienced it first-hand.
Future topics may include farming, downtown
Delphos businesses, homemaking, military
events and the railroad. If you have any topics
youd like to see included in our Roundtables
please let us know. All Roundtable events will
be professionally filmed and those records
will become a permanent part of the Museum
archives.
Join us at the Canal Museum as we relive
and preserve our history.

you

us at
an event, look for a

The Great Flood of 1913

The following was compiled by Robert

Holdgeve:
March 25, 1913
Delphos people awoke to find several feet
of water in their homes Tuesday morning.
Delphos was indeed a flood-stricken city
Tuesday and many residents in the south, east
and southwest parts of the city who went to
bed at all Monday night, awakened Tuesday
morning to find themselves closed in on all
sides and the streets forming rivulets of rapid
flowing water.
The water rose gradually during the night,
but at about three oclock the rise became
suddenly rapid and many districts which were
thought to be high and dry, were included in
the flood stricken districts. The police station
was besieged by telephone calls by people
who were shut in and hoped to escape from
the flood, where the situation had become
most alarming.
Chief Kehres and Patrolman Wagoner were
out early Tuesday morning and with other
residents they used rigs and boats to assist the
people from their homes.
The southern part of the city from the canal
east, and from Cleveland street south was one
broad expanse of water. In some instances the
residences on South Washington street had
from 5 to 6 feet of water over the floors.
Waterworks Park was completely flooded.
On most of the streets crossing the Clover
Leaf railroad the water extends to the tracks.
Jennings creek was the highest ever
known. The water was over the bridge at
the end of Ohio street and to the level of the
Pennsylvania bridge just to the north. The
water at the Fisher stone quarry was several
feet higher than the bank and the Clover Leaf
tracks near the quarry were washed out for
several hundred feet.
Several rescue parties were at work
Tuesday afternoon and from 50 to 100
families have left their homes. Boats are
being used to convey fuel and eatables to
others.
All the locks between here and St. Marys
are open and the canal is now a rapid flowing
stream.
There was several feet of water in the basements of the Delphos Manufacturing company and much damage will be wrought to stock
and machinery.
Mrs. P.R. Lochhead on East Suthoff street,
who is confined to bed from an accident, was
removed to the second floor of the residence,
and is resting as comfortable as possible.
The operators at the local telephone
exchange are the busiest people in Delphos.
The calls have been incessant and the girls
are taxed to their utmost. Patrons should not
become provoked so readily when they are
not answered as promptly as usual.

The lower floors of many residences have

several feet of water on them and carpets and
furniture will be greatly damaged.
The Ohio Electric, (Traction Line) had
about two miles of track washed out near
Monroeville, Ind. Traffic was completely abandoned, no cars being run through
Delphos. About a dozen bridges are out on
the C.H.& D., and every town on the railroad
between Dayton and Delphos is suffering
from the flood.
All the schools in the city save Jefferson
High, were unable to hold sessions Tuesday.
The Herald is issued under great difficulties. There was no gas supply for heating the
metal for our linotype.
Most of the country roads surrounding
Delphos are impassible and few of the farmers
are able to reach the city with rigs.
At Middle Point, half the residents are
reported to be surrounded by water and the
people are being rescued. There is 14 inches
of water in the waiting room of the (traction
line) station.
All the homes on the east side were empty
of water Wednesday morning. The flooded
houses had floors and furniture that were
covered with a heavy coating of mud and in
many cases, expensive furniture was swelled
and warped.
There were no regular trains into Delphos
Wednesday. The Pennsylvania was the only
line running any trains, and there were
turn-arounds running between Chicago and
Delphos.
The water in the Auglaize River was the
highest ever known. Charles Meyers, whose
home east of Delphos is near the river, sent an
appeal to Delphos and he and his family were
rescued. At the Meyers farm, four hogs were
drowned and the horses stood in 18 inches of
water all night.
There are no mail trains reaching Delphos
and the city mail carriers are enjoying somewhat of a vacation.
Elida, Middle Point are reported as being
badly flooded and the roads are practically
impassable. The town of Cloverdale is completely flooded, most of the residents being
unable to leave their homes and much livestock in surrounding country drowned.

Cloverdale people express their thanks to

the people of Delphos and Muntana for the
assistance they rendered last week, when that
town was entirely under water. Delphos citizens ran a relief train to that town, carrying
food supplies with them, and that the people
appreciated the kindness expressed in the following which was received at this office for
publication Tues.

Opinion

My comfort zone

Nancy Spencer

On the
Other Hand

By the time you read this, the Kiwanis will be starting on their second day of bringing the
community the best Fourth of July celebration ever!
The group has really gone all out this year, bringing even more entertainment and excitement to the annual event.
Whether you like the sporting events, food or fellowship, theres plenty to go around.
The Brewmaster tour is interesting, even if you dont like the suds. Interestingly enough, the
longer they brew a batch, the lighter it becomes.
Nashville Crush crushed it. It was my first time hearing them and they had me at the fiddle.
Im always rooting for these things to go well. The proceeds are funneled back into the community in projects for youth. They have rejuvenated the playgrounds at Stadium, Waterworks
and Garfield parks and redid the volleyball courts at Stadium Park. Theyre always looking for
more projects to take on, so if you have any ideas, let them know.
Today will be full of the usual fare for the day before the Fourth. The Up to the Challenge
softball game is a must-see. If you ever feel a little sorry for yourself, go watch this game and
realize that if nothing can hold these brave players back, nothing should hold you back.
The duck races and Northwest Dueling Pianos will round out the night.
Saturday is the creme de la creme. I can remember having trouble sleeping the night before
the Fourth of July. My dad and I had gotten my cane pole out and checked the line, bobber and
hook and everything was ready to go. The morning of, wed get out the bread and make dough
balls to fish with. I must say, I havent seen a cane pole line dropped in the canal in quite some
time. All the little anglers either have cartoon-themed mini rods and reels or are using one of
their dads real outfits.
The canal bank will be filled with children hoping to catch the big one for a bicycle. I still
find it quite exciting.
The park will be filled with the sound of the crack of a bat and the smell of the Kiwanis
famous fried chicken. Dont make the same mistake I did last year; get a dinner early, they sell
out!
I will spend the day snapping away with my camera, capturing all the events of the day.
My niece Katie from Atlanta will also be visiting and I hope to show her the same wonderful
time I used to have when I was her age. Im sure Ill snap more than a few photos of her, too.
Come out to the park today or tomorrow or both. Have some fun, spend a little money and
watch what wonderful things happen when the Kiwanis use it to better our community.

Monumental month
No matter how you butter your bread, with or without crusts, you must admit
that June 2015 is one for the
history books.
The highest court in the
United States ruled that
the Affordable Care Act is
here to stay, for better or
worse. And speaking of,
the Supreme Court also
decided that people of the
same sex can legally marry.
Pope Francis released a
stern letter regarding our
species poor track record
as stewards of the earth.
Following the brutal murder
of 16 people gathered in
peace and prayer, a symbol
of racism and oppression
is sliding down flagpoles
all over the South (mayhap
that will include the windows of pickup trucks and
bumper stickers all over the
country.)
And then theres the
rain. Some of the country
had it; some of it didnt.
Around here, we had more
than our share. Since the
newspaper in which this
column appears is printed
on paper during the wee
hours of Tuesday, Ill go
out on a limb and say that
this day is a sunny break in
between downpours (if not,
blame the National Weather
Service since thats who Im
counting on.)
The weather held out for

The Herald 11

Anne Coburn-Griffis
Putnam County Sentinel
most of the Putnam County
Fair. In fact, it wasnt beastly hot, with fans whirring to
keep the beast in the barns
cool and comfortable at one
end of the midway and spun
cotton candy from turning
to syrup in the bag at the
other end of the midway.
It was cool enough for me
to enjoy my new favorite
Fair food, curly fries by the
bucket, while running from
one end of the grounds to
another to take photos to
add to the online photo galleries.
But the rain did hit, and
unfortunately, it hit with a
vengeance as 2,200 bicyclists rode into Ottawa on
Friday. After months of
planning, several downtown Ottawa activities folded under a windy torrent.
The tent city along Putnam

Parkway was quiet, with

some cyclists calling it a
day to hitch rides back to
their cars in Van Wert. For
the very first time in the collective history of the Great
Ohio Bicycle Adventure,
the week-long excursion
ended early as riders congregated in Fort Jennings on
Saturday.
That last paragraph was
on the surface of things.
However, as I worked from
my office Friday night, I
saw parka-ed GOBA participants walking up and
down Meadow Glen and
Putnam Parkway, to and
from the Ottawa eateries
within walking distance.
Rumor has it that the colorful W.A.R. Wrestlers
left the fairgrounds to join
them. Yellow school busses
shuttled riders to and from
the various indoor venues
available during their stay.
Six hundred of them left
their tents to fill the YMCA
gym for a songfest, rain be
dipped.
If you peel back the
Gortex and wet-wicking
rainwear, all the Whos in
Whoville, or in this case
Putnam County, ought to
be proud of their part in
June 2015. Congratulations
to all who made it happen,
and thank you. Now, how
to top it?

I was out of my comfort

zone.
I recently completed a
one-year stint teaching at a
religious middle school. My
teaching experience prior had
consisted of college courses. So this was way beyond
anything I thought Id ever
do. To say I was anxious
is an understatement. I actually almost called the night
before school started to say I
couldnt do it.
The first day of school
was mostly a blur. But I got
through it. And the days that
followed. Sure, I had breakdowns on the weekends,
thinking there was no way
I could do this. I was overwhelmed by my insecurities.
Still, I pushed through it. The
more I got to know the students and staff, the less anxious I became.
The other teachers were
so helpful, and I wouldnt
have made it without them.
For that, I am eternally grateful. I was also so touched
by the parents, who often
left tokens of appreciation in
our mailboxes, like Kit Kats
with a little sign pasted on
top saying, You Deserve a
Break! Those mailbox presents always made my day.
Now that the school year
has ended, I miss my students. It didnt take long for
me to grow to love them.
I hope they all know how
special they are, how much I
loved getting to know them,
and how proud I am of each
one of them. I am sad that
the year is over, but I have
many great memories to think
about.
I think about the first day
of school, how we all sat
in a circle. I held a ball of

Supreme Court decision not justice Thank you for your support

DEAR EDITOR,
The gay people I know are some of the most kind, generous and
good-hearted people I have ever meet. They have every right to
pursue happiness.
A lot of people are upset about the Supreme Court decision and
gay people should be, too.
Stop and realize for a minute what really happened Friday. A
majority of the people in 13 states voted not to have gay civil unions
be legal. Friday, the Supreme Court (whose job is not to make laws
but uphold the constitution) by ONE vote told the world that the
government of the United States is not a government of the people
by the people and for the people.
Please open your minds to understand that what happened
Friday was not justice. The Supreme Court proved to us that we are
no longer a Democracy. This was a personal agenda forced onto the
people of this country so how can anyone expect some people not
to be upset.
Every year, fewer and fewer people in this country exercise their
right to vote. After what happened Friday, we need to ask ourselves
what is really happening to our country when five peoples personal
views can cast out the will of millions of tax-payers votes.
Gay people have every right to pursue happiness but do it
through the democratic way, not by force.
Friday, we told the whole world that our Supreme Court, like our
Congress, is corrupt.
This proves we are just another socialist ( another step closer to
being Communist) country.

we did the Cold War and try
to play the espionage game
better than they do.
Americans
havent
decided how they want the
government to respond to
cyber threats, Hayden said.
Chinas version of the CIA,
the Ministry of State Security,
is believed to have hacked the
OPM and stole 14 million sets
of records.
Ret. Air Force Lt. Gen.
James Clapper, Director of
National Intelligence, was
impressed by Chinas ability to pull off this caper and
said he wasnt sure the U.S.
would be able to mastermind a
similar security breach. Future
wars may take place in the
cyber domain.
Congressman Will Hurd, a
former undercover CIA officer, member of the Homeland
Security Committee and a
former senior adviser with
FusionX, the cyber security
firm, says Americas digital
infrastructure is under constant attack by our adversaries
and not enough is being done.
And, managers of government
agencies are not being held
accountable for major security
debacles.
Many people may have forgotten the cyber attack back in
the spring. Russian hackers hit
the IRS and grabbed 100,000
tax returns and used them
to request 15,000 fraudulent
refunds. Were these small
cyber assaults test runs for
bigger future invasions into
government, military and cor-

porate computer systems?

In the OPM breach, the
Chinese took possession
of sensitive information on
everyone from current cabinet
officials to U.S. spies. What
our enemies could do with this
information is very serious.
It puts thousands of lives in
danger.
We only steal stuff to
keep you free and to keep you
safewe do not steal stuff
to make you rich, Hayden
said. Our enemies will hack
our businesses to steal proprietary secrets and use them
to sabotage our economy or
put our financial system in
chaos.
Hayden says our lack of
defensive action is a mistake.
He warns us: the longer we
procrastinate making those
decisionsthe more likely
those cyber attacks will continue. Some people treasure
their personal security while
others feel their personal lives
are already exposed on various forms of Social Media.
******
Some people wont eat
day-old bread. So what does
that say about the report two
weeks ago out of China about
the discovery of zombie
meat?
Fourteen gangs were
charged with smuggling more
than 100,000 tons of 40-yearold frozen chicken, beef and
pork into China. The expired
meat was valued at nearly
$500 million.
Customs officials said
importers were bringing in
food infested with bacteria
and soaked in hydrogen peroxide to make it appear fresh
and edible. How could frozen
meat be kept in storage for 40
years without someone noticing?
Wouldnt a warehouse
employee bring old inventory to the attention of an
inventory manager? Then
after 40 years, someone had to
say lets offer this product to
smuggling gangs at a very low
price, and see if they can slip it
past official food inspectors.

dependence in 1776 was a seminal

moment in both American and world
history, the following are some notable events that took place in the years
preceding 1776 and helped to shape
the country now known as the United
States of America.

1765: The Passage of the Stamp

Act marked the first major form of
taxation on British colonists living
in what is now America. The act imposed taxes on printed materials to
help offset the costs of British troops
in the colonies and replenish British
debts. Colonists were upset they had
no say in how taxes were levied or
how the money would be spent.
1767: After repealing the Stamp
Act, Britain imposed the Townshend
Acts, a series of taxes on various British goods, including tea. Again, colonists were outraged, spurring a boycott on British goods.
1770: The Boston Massacre involved a crowd of colonists and a
collection of British soldiers. The soldiers opened fire on the crowd, killing
five and wounding six others. This
incident helped increase anti-British
sentiments in the colonies.
1773: A few years after the Bos-

as The Boston Tea Party, this

event proved a catalyst for
revolution.

1774: After the Intolerable Acts aimed to punish

colonists for The Boston Tea
party, delegates from 12 of the original 13 colonies met illegally to form
the First Continental Congress. They
convened to discuss plans for dealing
with various British offenses. Congress also developed political statements against the British and urged
people to boycott British goods. The
first president of this congress was
Payton Randolph. John Hancock was
appointed president the following
year after the monarchy ignored the
first Congress petition.
1775: The British governor of
Massachusetts sent several hundred
British troops to seize military supplies from the colonists at Concord.
When the colonists discovered the
plan, they sent their own militia to
intercept the forces at Lexington.
The British would win at Lexington but were defeated at Concord.
Throughout 1775, many other clashes
between colonists and British troops
took place, eventually culminating in
an event that would forever change
American history.

1776: On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted the

Declaration of Independence, which
formally proclaimed American colonies independent from Britain. However, Britain was not willing to bend
to colonists wishes.
1776-1783: Several battles took
place during this time period, including Moores Creek Bridge, Sullivans
Island and Fort Washington. France
was brought into the war in 1777. A
successful sea-and-land campaign
of American and French armies led
to the surrender of British troops at
Yorktown.
1783: Nearly two decades after
colonists began voicing their displeasure with British laws, the American
Revolution formally ended on September 3, 1783 with the Treaty of Paris. The British Empire accepted defeat
and recognized the independence of
the United States of America.

rades can be traced

back to the 18th century.
On July 4, 1777,
the city of Philadelphia, which would
become the first
capital of the United
States of America,
held the first annual
commemoration of
American independence, and exactly
one year later George
Washington ordered
that all of his soldiers
be offered double rations of rum to commemorate the anniversary.
In 1781, Massachusetts was the first
state to make July
4th an official state
holiday, and the day
was actually declared

a federal holiday by
the U.S. Congress in
1870.
However,
that
declaration did not
grant a paid holiday
to federal employees.
That benefit came

in 1941, which is
why that year is now
recognized as the
first year when the
Fourth of July officially became a federal holiday.

adoption of the Declaration of Independence

by the Second Continental Congress on July
4, 1776.
Precious few Americans can say they have
not been present at a
4th of July barbecue or
witnessed a fireworks
display honoring Americas official declaration
of independence from
Great Britain. Hosting
a July 4th barbecue for
the first time may have
some hosts anxious
about throwing a summer soire to remember, but fun is sure to be
had if hosts remember
to include the following backyard barbecue
essentials this Independence Day.
Food
No Fourth of July
barbecue is complete
without food, so hosts
should be sure to stock
up on popular barbecue
fare like hot dogs and
hamburgers. Though

such foods likely wont

be mistaken for gourmet fare anytime soon,
Fourth of July revelers
often embrace the tradition of grilling up some
hot dogs and hamburgers even if they tend
to avoid such foods
throughout the rest of
the year. Hosts should
not feel pressured to
provide gourmet fare
on July 4th, but it is a
thoughtful gesture to
ask guests in advance if
they have any food allergies or need to avoid
certain foods for other
reasons.
Beverages
It goes without saying that guests will need
refreshing beverages
at parties held in early July, but be sure to
stock up on a variety
of beverages so guests
are not forced to consume drinks they dont
want. Be sure to have
plenty of water available to guests, and pro-

vide sodas, iced tea and

lemonade as well. Offer
alcoholic beverages to
adult guests, but dont
go overboard stocking
up on alcohol, as that
might encourage guests
to overindulge.
Games
Backyard
barbecues are most fun when
guests are entertained,
so plan to have some
games available for
guests of all ages. Encourage guests to bring
a change of clothes
or swimsuits if games
will involve water or
something that might
soil their clothing. If
you have a pool, purchase some pool games
so swimmers can do
more than just wade in
the water or take a few
laps. Plan a Wiffle
ball game for kids and
dig some horseshoe pits
or buy a ring toss set
so adults can engage in
some friendly competition as well.
Safety
Though no one
wants to think of a 4th
of July celebration taking a turn for the worst,
hosts must prepare for
emergencies. Restock
the first-aid kit if necessary and keep a constant eye on guests,
especially
children,
to ensure everyone is
having a safe and happy time. Program a list
of local taxi companies
into your phone so you
can easily call for transportation should any
guests have too much
to drink during the festivities. Hosts should
abstain from alcohol so
they can serve as designated driver should the
need arise at the end of
the night.

The 4th of July is

fast approaching and

On Friday morning, Mr. Black was enabled

boarding place when he started for work on
Tuesday. After visiting the various relief stations, he located Mrs. Black near their home
and the joy of their reunion was too great to
express. Mrs. Black was rescued from the

the second story and was taken in a boat to a
nearby flat which was transferred into a relief
station.

Weve wanted our relationship to be recognized just like marriage is of other people,
Valerie said. There have been times that Ive
needed emergency medical care and Jess has
been questioned whether or not she could see
me in the emergency room. Weve never had
anything too dramatic like on TV that she was
barred from the room or anything, but in order
for her to be able to speak for me, there was
a bunch more paperwork that had to be done
than her just saying shes my wife.
Jessica thought of the same situations and
the effect having a legally recognized marriage would have on their lives.
This means so much because of being
able to know that when we are no longer able
to take care of ourselves, we will be considered together, married, Jessica said. I cant
explain how much it means.
While Jessica and Valerie share the same
last name, it did not come with the benefits
of marriage and actually was not meant to
signify that either.
A few years ago, as my father was dying,
Jess, she admired my dad so much and
he accepted her as part of the family, so
she changed her name to Jones so that she
could be considered one of his kids, Valerie
explained. It wasnt so much as she took my
name as it was she took his name.
After sharing a life together for more than
a decade, the couple is ready for the next
adventure together.
Me and her weve been married since we
took our vows 14 years ago, but this is the
biggest step and I dont know what to say, its
just amazing, Jessica said.
The couples friends were the first to ask
when the wedding would be, a question the
couple had never really discussed in concrete
terms.
Its like having the capacity to go to the
moon, but were not actually planning to go.
So now, we have the capacity and now, I have
to put on a wedding, she laughed. Now its
real, its concrete, its fun.

World War I. Curth was unable to determine
the nature of service of the remaining four
veterans. However, he is presently chasing
a rumor that would give his project and
Westside Cemetery even more prestige.
There are stories that theres a
Revolutionary War general out there, Curth
said. I havent been able to find him yet, but
that would be a nice thing to find him.
No matter their origins, their time of service, for Curth the reality that the memory
of these men were eroding along with their
markers was unacceptable. So he hatched a
plan to rectify the situation.
Im working on a project to help honor
the veterans in the Westside Cemetery who
are without a gravestone, he declared. I
would like to get a monument erected to
honor them.

The court case, Obergefell v. Hodges,

resulted in a 5-4 decision upholding that
the Fourteenth Amendment requires states
to license a marriage between two people of
the same sex and to recognize a same-sex
marriage when their marriage was lawfully
licensed and performed out-of-state.
Valerie and Jessica celebrated upon hearing the decision.
Excitement. Jubilation. I think we both
jumped up and down and screamed. The
whole neighborhood knew what we were
screaming about, Valerie said of their initial
reaction.
In the majority opinion, U.S. Supreme
Court Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote:
No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of
love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people
become something greater than once they
were. As some of the petitioners in these cases
demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that
may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they
disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is
that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that
they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves.
Their hope is not to be condemned to live in
loneliness, excluded from one of civilizations
oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity
in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants
them that right.
For Valerie, that right is what shes wanted
since she met Jessica.
We just wanted to be recognized as
equal, Valerie said. Im going to feel like a
normal grown-up. Were going to be a normal
couple.
The wedding planning for Valerie and
Jessica is under way with an August wedding
date as a possibility.
Weve called each other wife for 14 years,
which means we work together as a partnership and weve already seen the best and
weve already seen the worst of each other
and she still wants to marry me, Valerie said.
Thats the best feeling in the world.

He approached Delphos Granite Works

with the idea and they designed the monument. Now, its simply a matter of raising the
money necessary to create and emplace the
memorial, the $10,000 necessary to honor the
efforts of 27 men who gave of, if not gave up
their lives in the cause of their country.
With money and assurities in hand from
area civic organizations like the Optimists,
Rotary, American Legion and Veterans of
Foreign Wars and from local businesses,
including Vanamatic, Toledo Moulding and
Die and the Delphos Herald, Curth said that
he is still short of his goal. Even so, he intends
to push on until he succeeds.
After all, as Curth quite simply put it, We
owe it to them.
Groups, organizations or individuals interested in supporting the memorial effort can
