OLD CELLS
This book presents the evidence for the belief that psoriasis is a disease
of abnormal keratinocyte proliferation induced by T cells. The latest
approaches to investigating the immunopathogenesis of this disease,
and a review of previous findings, are presented to give an overall
picture of the current knowledge in this field. Each topic is discussed
in detail, clearly illustrated and well referenced. The book should prove
invaluable to clinical dermatologists, and researchers in the fields of
immunology and dermatology who have an interest in skin diseases.
Contents: Clinical and Histological Features of Psoriasis; Skin Immune
System in Psoriasis; Immune Cell Function in Psoriasis; Psoriasis is a
T Cell-Mediated Disease; b-Haemolytic Streptococci and Psoriasis;
Immune Function of Psoriatic Keratinocytes; Current and Future
Immunological Approaches to Treatment of Psoriasis; Model for the
Pathogenesis of Psoriasis.

This is a very nice little textbook which is small enough to fit easily
into a briefcase. While not attempting to be fully comprehensive, it
does cover all aspects of ophthalmology with particular attention to
the most common problems seen in practice and also gives a flavour
of some of the rarer conditions It is well illustrated not only with
colour and black and white plates but also with a series of very good
simple line drawings which show clearly the principles of common
surgical procedures.

MICROSURGERY FORUM
This book is a monograph about brachial plexus palsy. Severe brachial plexus
injuries are often caused by traffic accidents, especially motorcycle accidents.
The intercostal nerve transfer to the musculocutaneous nerve is a standard
treatment of choice in Japan to reconstruct elbow flexion for brachial plexus
palsy with root avulsion. The functional conversion of the nerve transfer
is described in detail, using electrophysiological and histochemical studies.
This book focuses on birth-related brachial plexus palsy as well as the
treatment of brachial plexus injuries in adults.

BONE MICROCIRCULATION
by I McCarthy (Imperial College School of Medicine)
This book emphasises the unique organisation of the microcirculation in bone,
and shows the importance of blood flow and vascular pressures in the normal
physiology of bone. Techniques for the physiological measurement of bone
circulation in both clinical and experimental situations are described. In addition,
the book discusses the clinical significance of disorders of bone circulation
and describes the response of the microcirculation to injury and its role in
fracture repair.

This book draws together recent results and ideas from most of the leading
UK researchers into back pain. The emphasis is on disorders of the lumbar
spine, their pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment. This is in contrast to most
books on the spine which either concentrate on the normal spine or deal with
a specialised approach such as surgery. By drawing together contributions from
a wide range of clinical and scientific backgrounds, including alternative
therapies such as osteopathy and chiropractice, the problem of low back pain
is shown to be complex and multifactorial.
Contents: The Curved, Flexible Spine and the Functions of Ligaments and
Muscles (R M Aspden); Biomechanics of the Intervertebral Disc Disc Pressure
Measurements and Significance (D S McNally); Neuropeptides in the Lumbar
Spine (I K Ashton & S M Eisenstein); Growth and Development of the Lumbar

DISLOCATION BASED
FRACTURE MECHANICS
(In 2 Parts)
by Yuan-Cheng Bertram Fung (UC, San Diego)
This book is a compendium of papers contributed by Y C Fung,
Chairman of the World Council for Biomechanics, on the
development of biomechanics in the past 30 years. Most of the
articles are records of original contributions scattered in many
journals. Having these papers collected together, classified according
to subjects, and arranged in chronological order for each subject, will
help the reader to obtain a total perspective of his work and his
association with his colleagues. The selection ranges from constitutive
equations, microcirculation, heart, lung, blood vessels, ureter and
other internal organs, and tissue engineering. Several summary articles
provide a fascinating guide to the evolution of ideas over this period
of time. His work done in the field of aeroelasticity predates his
biomechanics work. The applications of some general ideas of aeroelasticity are broader than
the specific topics discussed, as exemplified by the sharing of ideas between aeronautics and
biology.
This valuable title will be of interest to anyone concerned with bioengineering and aeronautics,
and should have a place in the library of people who are just starting their career as well as
those who are well into it.
Readership: Bioengineers, cardiologists and orthopaedic surgeons.

should also purchase copies of this superb book.
Appl. Mech. Rev., 1996
The dislocation is the basic building block of the crack
in an elastic-plastic solid. Fracture mechanics is developed
in this text from its dislocation foundation. It is the only
text to do so. It is written for the graduate student and the
new investigator entering the fracture field as well as the
experienced scientist who has not used the dislocation
approach. The dislocation mechanics needed to find the
dislocation density fields of crack tip plastic zones is
developed in detail. All known dislocation based solutions
are given for the three types of cracks in elastic-plastic solids
are given.

This video is the first in a series which will introduce the viewer to a philosophic
approach for, and a morphologic background to, the diagnosis of children with
congenitally malformed hearts. In each video we demonstrate the anatomy
as seen in echocardiographic cuts, relating to the three-dimensional structure
of the heart and then show the echocardiographic images themselves,
demonstrating the window from which they have been obtained. The first video
is the essential introduction to normality, showing the orthogonal planes of
the heart relative to the body, and illustrates how the echocardiographer
interrogates each plane. Emphasis is then placed on normal anatomic features
which underscore sequential segmental analysis. The video is the first of its
kind and is accompanied by an explanatory booklet containing video time
codes to guide the viewer.

Virtually all newborn babies admitted to Neonatal Units for intensive care
develop haematological problems which contribute to their mortality and
morbidity. Until recently, the mechanism of these disorders has been poorly
understood. This book provides a problem-oriented approach to fetal and
neonatal haematology of interest to haematologists, neonatal paediatricians and
fetal medicine specialists. Using the clinical and laboratory features (eg.
thrombocytopenia) and the age of the fetus or neonate as a guide to the nature
of the haematological problems likely to be encountered, this book will be
of unique practical value to these specialists. It also reviews current scientific

TUBERCULOSIS
An International Perspective
edited by John D H Porter (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine) &
John M Grange (Imperial College)
The fact that the World Health Organization has declared tuberculosis a global emergency
indicates the serious inadequacy of the ways in which the control methods at our disposal are
used. Several books on tuberculosis have been published in recent years, but none have taken
a deep and detailed look at the holistic aspects of global tuberculosis control, even though
international agencies are increasingly aware of the importance of the numerous factors other
than the design and efficacy of therapeutic drug regimens. This unique book fills that gap. Although
it deals specifically with tuberculosis, the principles outlined and discussed are relevant to many
other areas of global medicine, including the ever-growing problem of HIV/AIDS.
The book is aimed principally at those involved in the design, establishment and management
of disease control programmes at international, national and local levels, and also at a more
general readership of epidemiologists, public health officers, community psychologists, and others
interested in understanding the human dimension of disease control.

A PRIMER OF CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY
This book has been written primarily for medical students and junior doctors
in clinical practice, but would also be a useful reference for postgraduate
students in chemical pathology (clinical biochemistry), laboratory scientists,
pathologists and medical laboratory technologists. It covers the field of chemical
pathology, the biochemical basis of disease, and provides a basic understanding
of the relationship between abnormal biochemical test results and disease states.
A rational approach to proper selection and interpretation of biochemical
investigations is adopted for each organ system or analyte covered in the 28
chapters. Emphasis is placed on areas and problems most commonly met with
in clinical practice. Meant primarily as an introductory study book to the subject
rather than as a reference text, the materials have been presented in a clear,
condensed format to aid the study process. The written text is amply supplemented
with relevant illustrations.

... the authors cover most of the major areas of importance in dayto-day practice, with particular emphasis on renal, acid-base and

discussions concise yet comprehensive. There are helpful tables and

is usual in books of this sort, which will be valuable to teachers and

it handles well and it will stay open on the desk or bench ...
It deserves to be widely known, and widely used.

MYELOPEPTIDES
LYMPHATIC FILARIASIS
Myelopeptides are a new class of endogenous bioregulatory peptides. Each has its own
definite immunoregulatory activity and differs in their final effects and mechanisms of action.
Myelopeptides act as immunocorrectors and thus prevent the development of immunodeficiency
states. They have an antitumor effect which contributes to the retention of active immune
defense in the tumor-bearing body. The ability of myelopeptides to induce terminal cell
differentiation in hemopoietic disorders (in particular, in leukemia) is demonstrated. The
protective effect of a single myelopeptide in bacterial contagion of animals, which is due
to the stimulation of macrophage phagocytosis, is established. In this book, the concept
of the general biological value of cytokines, including peptide endogenous regulators, is
discussed. Myelopeptides are promising in the development of a new generation of medicinal
preparations because of their endogenous origin, low molecular weight, directed action and
absence of side effects.
This book is intended for those interested in medical and biological problems: lecturers
and students in medical and biological universities, scientists and researchers from medical
and biological laboratories, and other professionals involved in medical and biological
research.
