Students End of Year Report

The purpose of reporting is to inform parents about the progress of their
children. This year we have refined our Report Form to include statements that
clearly indicate where students have achieved against expectations.

In the next few newsletters we will include information on how we have arrived at
these judgements and how they will be reported on the form.

This week: Reporting student writing achievement.

Throughout the year teachers make regular judgements based on students
writing. These usually form the basis of the next teaching step for individual
students. Teachers are constantly monitoring student writing. But to ensure
accuracy of teacher judgements we complete more formalised assessments using
student samples.

Assessment of writing samples

Teachers assess individual writing by analysing various components of the text
including:
- Audience and purpose
- Content and ideas
- Structure and organisation
- Language
- Surface features including spelling and punctuation.

This assessment is completed using nationally levelled exemplars. To ensure our

accuracy further we then moderate with teachers from another school.

This assessment will be reported on your child’s report as either below, at or

above expectations. The next learning step will also be identified and information
included about how parents can help at home.

Feilding Intermediate Rock Band Plays At Taonui

Guess what! Yesterday we went over to the hall to see the

Feilding Intermediate Band – how cool is that! They were very
loud and there were heaps of people there watching them play
all these awesome songs. My favourite instrument was the bass
guitar. I really enjoyed the band. I thought we were very lucky
that the Feilding Intermediate Band came to see us. I hope
they come again.

The fantastic band from Feilding Intermediate School came and performed their
hard practised work for us. They played many songs and performed very
professionally. It was fun to watch.

They obviously have put a lot of time into their work because
there were no muck ups. My favourite part of the show was
the singers because you would need a lot of confidence to be
able to sing in front of a crowd like us!

They taught me that if you really want to achieve something

you will need to work really hard to succeed and even if you don’t like someone, just
move on and keep at it.

Alex, Seth & Zed Play Golf for Taonui at the Kainui Schools
Extension Day

Bang, Oh darn! It went over the fence. Zed, Alex and myself were playing golf for
Taonui School in Palmerston North. I so thought we were going to do well until I saw
this girl who was such a good player that I believed we would then come last.
Sometimes we did play some really bad shots but at the end we came 3rd. A pretty
good result I thought.

School Trophies
Please return all Pet Day and other School trophies to the Office as
soon as possible.
What did we do on our teacher only day?

Curriculum
This was really worthwhile and gave staff the chance to draft much of our new
curriculum and this will be ready for the beginning of the 2010 School year.

Our document is based on the consultation last year and again this year with parents
and students to develop our STRIVE values.

New School Report

We have revised our student end of year report form so that it clearly shows where
students are in relation to expectations, comment on the next learning step and how
parents can help at home.

COME ALONG TO ASSEMBLY ON 20 NOVEMBER WHEN THESE WILL BE

AVAILABLE FOR VIEWING AND YOUR COMMENT.

School Charter & Strategic Plan

The Charter is being reviewed by the Board and 7 key strategies identified as
priorities for the next 3 years. We have included these over the page for your
information. We would like our community to take the time to read and discuss the
charter. A comment sheet will be included with the next newsletter.

National Standards
Over the last week there has been much in the news about the introduction next year
of the National Standards in reading, writing and numeracy. The standards are on
display on our office notice board and can be found online @
