Principle of Co-ordination work

It is the inter-relation between design and installation of building
services in such a manner as to permit practical, economic and aesthetic
installation within the building structure

Regulation

Co-ordination is important and required

There are multiple services
There is a positional relationship between the services
Installation or ceiling space is usually limited
Consideration must be given to access and maintenance
To avoid clashes between services

Methods of Co-ordination

Sequential Design
Is a multi-disciplinary effort with input from many
people and requires many revisions

Less Clashes
- Each designer is fully aware
of other services which may
otherwise clash

Time Consuming
- Need longer time to complete
the services design

Overlay method
Is an iterative process of sequentially overlaying
multi drawings of various trades

Save Time
- It allows for design of each
service to proceed concurrently

Major Clashes
- May require major revamp of
the services routing

Scale Model
By constructing of a scale model to visual the
actual installation space requirement

Mock up
- In project which have standard
layout for every storey

Costly
- It could be costly and time
consuming

Preparation of drawing

installation space of
component A

B

C
Component A and B
should be installed before
component C

C
Component Cs lead time
is greater than component
A and B, therefore it
should be located below
them

Operation and Maintenance

Apply maintenance knowledge to minimize the cost of
operation and maintenance

Access Space

Component B should be located

within access space of component A

Access Frequency

A
B
Component B has greater access
frequency requirements then component
A and therefore should be located below
component A

Understand the basic principle

for adjusting the services
during co-ordination

Ductwork and Chilled Water Pipe

o Consider converting a round duct to rectangular duct or
vice versa (refer to the conversion table). The aspect ratio of a
rectangular duct should not be more than 5

W/H<5
W

o Consider for external and internal insulation thickness

- 25mm in air-conditioned space
- 50mm in non-air-conditioned space
o Consider for the support brackets and flanges
- 25mm to 50mm (ductwork)
- 25mm to 100mm depending on the pipe size
o Consider additional thickness of 100mm for fire rated ductwork
o External insulation is required to minimize heat transfer and
prevent condensation. Refer to insulation thickness table for
chilled water pipe

FCUs and AHUs

o FCUs and AHUs are to be installed in the false ceiling. In such
cases, adequate maintenance space shall be provided
o For ceiling suspended AHUs, it may require to construct catwalk
around the equipment

o If noise is a concern, FCU, AHU or ventilation fan may be

enclosed in acoustic enclosure

Sanitary and Rain Water Pipe

o Pipe to be installed with a gradient
o Pipe carries condensate water from air-conditioning equipment
to be insulated with external insulation as in the case of
chilled water pipe

o Pipe should not be installed above dining area, bedroom. When

allowed by authority, a tray or double slab shall be provided to
prevent leakage onto the space below
o Ceiling access opening shall be provided for the inspection of
floor trap

Sprinklers and Sprinkler Pipes

o Installed according to CP 52 (ordinary hazard group)
- max spacing is 4m
- max area of coverage is 12m sq
o Obstructions having a width > 800mm would require
additional sprinklers underneath the obstruction
o Sprinkler guard should be installed at low headroom area

Electrical and Data Services

o Avoid putting electrical tray / trunking under water pipes
o Preferable near to ceiling level for easy access and pulling of
cable
o Max height for conduit for horizontal DATA cabling shall not
exceed 3.3m from floor level
o Min clearance of 50mm between DATA tray and any services
above it
o Space between DATA tray and false ceiling shall be between
75mm and 150mm

Important Points To Note When

Preparing Co-ordination Plan

Services are clearly labeled

Indicate dimension of services
Indicate dimension of space requirement in
sectional drawing

Indicate services level eg. BOTxxxx

Indicate distance / spacing between ceiling terminal
units to ceiling grid
Services are drawn to scale and provide Legend
Services on plan to tally with sectional drawing

Do not use single line to indicate services

The purpose of preparing Sectional View Drawing

o Ensure all services are coordinated at congested area
o Ensure all parties are aware of the exact location of their services
o To achieve ceiling height requirement
The purpose of preparing Reflected Ceiling Plan
o Ensure aesthetically pleasant ceiling layout
o Ensure ceiling terminal units are properly coordinated and
installed correctly

We are ready for the drawings !!!

Getting start
Step 1 (approx. 5 mins)
o transfer structure plan onto Arch plan
o Indicate the dimension and color them
Step 2 (approx. 30 ~ 40 mins)
o Identify clashes area and prepare sectional view drawing
o Indicate the level and relative position of services, label and
dimension of services
Step 3 (approx. 10 mins)
o Transfer sprinkler plan onto Arch plan
o Indicate the size (dia) and color them
Step 4 (approx. 20 mins)
o Transfer ACMV plan onto Arch plan
o Indicate duct, pipe size and color them
Step 5 (approx. 10 mins)
o Transfer electrical & lighting plan onto Arch plan
o Indicate the size of cable tray and color them
Step 6 (approx. 5 mins)
o Written question (consideration for the above changes)
