To all,
The Gary Young File was created by Graham Sorenson
of England. He along with Marcia Elston, of Seattle, WA
are the lead trumpeters of a small group of aromatherapists
whose declared mission is to shut down YL.
They spew their open hatred on a list much like JOY called
the IDMA list. The last time I posted to the IDMA list there
were some 1200 list members, many of whom were YL
members. However, the IDMA list is controlled (dominated)
by about two dozen people who make sure nothing good said
about GY or YL remains unchallenged.
What sets these people apart from most others is that they
are downright mean spirited. They think nothing of tearing
into the motives and character of anyone who has anything
positive to say about YL. I know from personal experience,
as well as some of you.
1

Now the question is why?

After going head to head with them for two years and
reading their words, it is my considered opinion that it is
jealousy and greed, not concern for anything else, that
guides their words and actions. Understand they think
of themselves as experts, and they may be. But experts
or not, they are human beings filled with all that comes
with being human.
Those on the IDMA list who violently oppose YL are,
in fact, competitors. That is they manufacture and
sell their own line of essential oils. Young Living is
the big fish in the aromatherapy pond that threatens
their livelihood.
Young Living has raised the bar of quality on essential
oils, as most of you know. Few other aromatherapy
companies have the where-with-all to manufacture such
large quantities of oils, as YL does, and have them
tested as many times. This leaves the me too and
other wantabes with little ground to compete.
Those who oppose YL also go into tirades wherever
Raindrop procedures are discussed or brought up.
They have gone so far as to enlist the aid of the National
Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) to make
a pronouncement against raindrop. However, NAHA
has dropped the issue. The authors of this move to
have raindrop outlawed are ardent promoters against
YL. Not satisfied with NAHA's decision, they are
proceeding to publish a white paper against Raindrop.
I would hope we all exercise our God given ability to
reason for ourselves and make our own judgements,
based on the records of both YL and those who
oppose YL. Look at each track record. Scrutinize
the spirit behind the words of each.
The spirit of healing is that of love. I matters not
who manufactures quality oils. But it does matter
greatly the spirit behind those who would promote
them. If you perceive hatred in what you read, how
2

can that spirit heal or promote love? It cannot.

The facts of life dictate that hatred is with us. As
YL members who have established trust with YL's
products, Gary Young, and the YL mission, know
there are people out there who would delight in
tearing all of this down.
Look at what is being done, and how it is being done.
Having said this, I will close this thread for now.
I wanted our new list members to know what is
going on in the real world of aromatherapy, which is
why I allowed the original post. it isn't pretty. For here
you will find both godly love and all manner of evil.

Dear Joyful Ones,

This website comes up occasionally. It has been in place for several
years, and does not appear to be updated...
On behalf of all of us, I have personally researched every allegation
mentioned.
Young Living and Gary Young came out squeaky clean on every
single
issue...
I believe what caused this website to happen was that when Gary
burst
on the scene in the 80's there were few, if any, therapeutic grade
oils in the US. (I was using essential oils at that time to make
potpourris and herbal gifts, and I agree...) Gary had been studying
with LaPraz, Penoel, and other French doctors who emphasized that
quality was essential when using oils for therapeutic use.
3

So Gary educated people everywhere he went about the dangers of

using
lower quality oils, and the people who were selling oils at the time
- all English trained, by the way, were furious... They mounted a
campaign against him back then.
I believe that Gary Young raised the bar of purity in this country...
It's made a group of people really mad, obviously... The website
originated in the UK where internet law does not allow us to pursue
them for slander... which is all this is... It kind of reminds me of
spiritual terrorism and I hate to spend too much time defending the
issues, because it gives me less time for my life mission which is to
educate people about oils now, so that people in the future do not
need to be so sick...
By the way, I was with Gary Young in Turkey one of the times he
taught at Ege University in Ismir (they say he never taught there)...
The faculty and the students both loved his classes... I have a
picture of me holding my certificate presented by the dean of
agriculture... There were nearly 100 of us on that trip, who can
vouch for his being there...
"Festering and infected ulcers" using oils? Excuse me? (They're
referring to Raindrop Technique)... I've personally taught several
thousands of people how to perform Raindrop, and not one has had a
problem that I'm aware of, and you'd think that by now, I'd have
heard of at least one if there was a problem... I believe that if
oregano or thyme oil was used in a huge quantity this way, it could
be too hot for the skin - that's why we only use 3 drops of oregano
and thyme for a person's first Raindrop, and work up to 6 - 8 drops
over time...
Gary Young has taken the "high road" on this issue, and just will not
get into a fight about it... It would take his focus off of the
farms, the clinic, and the research and we've all asked him not to do
that...
Gary's a wonderful man... kind and generous... Perfect? No... of
course not... he's a human just like us... I got upset with him when
he fired one of my favorite employees... and I've never been fond of
changing compensation plans, although I've had the advantage of
studying with some of the experts in the industry, and they have me
convinced that right now, we have to adapt our plan to insure the
security of our future... I've been with Gary and Mary Young
4

thousands of hours, I've stayed at their home, traveled with them to

Turkey, Egypt, and France, and I know them very well... When you're
lugging suitcases and riding in hot, dusty busses for hours, you get
to know people really well...
I recall a time in Turkey when we had traveled all day on a bus to
visit distilleries, and it was hot and dark and we were all tired,
including Gary and Mary... We were riding back to our hotel, and
Gary Young, who wanted to educate us as much as was humanly
possible,
spoke to us, in the dark, about distilling oils... There we were,
trying to take notes without even being able to see our notebooks...
I have mine to this day, and to look at it takes me back to that very
precious time when Gary gave so much of himself as he always
does...
I'm honored to have them as friends.
I left my life's work with Hanna Kroeger, (a pioneer in natural
medicine whom I had studied with for 21 years) to come on board
with
Young Living 8 years ago... I researched the company intensively for
two years before making the decision, and have continued to watch,
listen, and ask a lot of questions, and Gary's never been out of
integrity with me for one moment...
So for you new oilers, you can either take my word for it, and move
on, or you can begin your own research process... Each of us gets to
make a choice, and I choose Young Living.
Light and Love, Vicki Opfer

Quote:
James Kababick, Director of one of the largest independent labs for
chemical
analysis of essential oils, even went so far as to collect samples
directly
from
Young Living's Utah distillery. He concluded that Young Living has
created
"full-bodied essential oils that are far different from what we normally
see."
Dr. Robert Pappas, Ph. D., a specialist in essential oil chemistry and
Director of
Applied Essential Oil Research in South Bend, Indiana, agrees.
"Young
Living's
essential oils are the finest I have yet analyzed. I gave their lavender
oil my highest rating - 5 stars. It scored high in desired esters and
low
in the
oxygenerated compounds and ketones that can give the oil a bad
smelling
astringent quality. Dr. Young's uncompromising attention to quality
as
well as
his never-ending pursuit of perfection are what make Young Living's
essential
oils so very different from many commonly
found available aromatherapy products."

Quackpot Watch

"THE LAST DAYS OF THE QUACKBUSTERS"...

Opinion by Consumer Advocate Tim Bolen
I've been following the activities of the "Quackbusters" for about five
years, ever since the name Stephen Barrett (www.quackwatch.com)
came up, as a player, against a client of mine in California. I asked
the question "why would this group be using a doctor from
Pennsylvania, as their witness, when there are 300,000 health
professionals in this State?"
Thus began my education. Now I'm going to educate YOU...
The "Quackbuster" operation is a conspiracy. It is a propaganda
enterprise, one part crackpot, two parts evil. It's sole purpose is to
discredit, and suppress, in an "anything goes" attack mode, what is
wrongfully named "Alternative Medicine." It has declared war on
reality. The conspirators are acting in the interests of, and are being
paid, directly and indirectly, by the "conventional" medical-industrial
complex.
Millions of health freedom fighters, and members of the public,
worldwide, know what I know. Public outrage and reaction is growing.
After 25 years of unopposed success, the "Quackbusters" are now in
real trouble... "The end" for them, has begun. They, themselves are
7

being hunted.
The "Quackbuster Conspiracy" is in a desperate place now. They
know they've lost the war, and are going to pay a terrible price for
their actions. The fear is in their eyes...
CRACKPOTS?
Yes. When the self-named "Quackbusters" stumbled around to find a
derisive name to call their victims, they picked the word "Quack,"
without ever bothering to discover it's origins. Its original meaning,
from Europe, comes from the term "quacksalver" which was used to
describe Dentists who were dumb enough to use mercury (a poison)
as fillings for teeth. Look at propagandist, and "Quackbuster" kingpin, Stephen Barrett's website (www.quackwatch.com), and you'll find
that HE IS IN FAVOR of mercury (amalgam) tooth fillings. Barrett, his
cronies, and minions, are not known to do intelligent research.
EVIL?
Yes. The "Quackbuster Conspiracy" was started shortly after the
American Medical Association (AMA) lost the court battle to the
Chiropractors in a case begun in Federal court in 1976. The Federal
judge ordered the AMA's covert operation shut down - and leave the
Chiropractors alone. The AMA files, library, etc., ended up in Stephen
Barrett's 1,800 square foot basement in Allentown, PA. Barrett, and
his minions, had the common sense to stay away from criticizing
Chiropractors for quite some time. Barrett has since abandoned that
common sense.
Federal judges have a way of enforcing their decisions using
shackles, Federal Marshals, the federal prison facilities, asset
seizure, etc... Even Barrett, in all his incredible arrogance, isn't dumb
enough to match wills with a Federal Judge. I think the Chiropractic
Association should consider re-opening the Wilks case in front of that
same Federal Judge - and point right at Barrett, and his cronies.
In that early, educational case for me in California, Stephen Barrett
and two slime-ball investigators from the California Medical Board,
had convinced members of the Laguna Beach Police Department that
a nutritionist using ozone therapy was "a sex criminal preying on
women." Flak-jacketed thugs screwed a gun into Salvatore
D'Onofrio's ear, forced him to lie on the ground, and thus began a
brutal, anything goes, persecution.
8

D'Onofrio's attorney was a hiking partner of mine, and told me the

story on a ridgeline, seven miles up from a trailhead. I laugh now
when I remember my naive response "This can't be happening in
America."
Sal D'Onofrio, through his attorney, hired us, at day 43 in solitary
confinement in the Orange County Jail. He was in "solitary" because
that's what they do with sex criminals. He was in jail because the
judge had set bail at $500,000, an amount his supporters couldn't
raise. Barrett's minions were ruining D'Onofrio's life in the press.
We organized a bail hearing for day 48 of incarceration, put 62 of
D'Onofrio's supporters in the courtroom, LA network television in the
jury box, got the front page of the LA Times, etc., etc., etc., - and the
judge let D'Onofrio out on his own recognizance. Seven weeks later
the prosecutor dropped the charges.
Who are these people that would, so casually, inflict that kind of
nightmare on an innocent man?
James Carter, MD's authoritative book "Racketeering In Medicine,"
published by Hampton Roads, carefully explains the "Quackbuster
Conspiracy."
ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE?
"Alternative Medicine" is defined as any protocol, action, or therapy
that isn't "drugs, radiation, or surgery oriented."
Wrongfully named? Yes. So-called "alternative medicine" is actually
the health choice of planet earth. It is a combination of every good
health idea invented by mankind, in every country and culture on this
planet. There is nothing "alternative" about it. Labeling planet earth's
health choice as "alternative" is, and was, a propaganda device.
North Americans have overwhelmingly (by their purchases) made
"Alternative Medicine" the "health choice of the people" - for the best
of reasons: it works better than allopathic, it "removes the cause"
rather than "treating the symptoms," it is cost effective, it makes
people feel better and think clearer, and it doesn't have all those
horrible effects, and side effects, of invasive surgery or prescription
drugs.
9

More than half of the US health dollar in 1999 was spent on

"Alternative Medicine" and it was all out-of-pocket. Conventional
medicine is being paid for, and is surviving, only because insurance
and Medicare pay for it - the public won't spend an out-of-pocket
nickel on it.
Alternative Medicine philosophies fit the "American (I'll make my own
decisions)" way of thinking. Allopathic Medicine philosophies fit the
"Germanic (follow my orders)" way. "Alternative Medicine" is for
people who think for themselves - Americans.
The door to real "alternatives" is barely open. The future of medicine
is right in front of us - it isn't in pharmaceuticals - it is in nutrition, body
cleansing, prevention, oxygen therapies and energy medicine - all of
which are constantly targeted by the sleaziest of the "Quackbuster"
soldiers.
THE "QUACKBUSTER" STRONGHOLD...
The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), is a vital Medical
Doctor (MD) control point. It is the trade organization of all 50 State's
Medical Boards. The FSMB is the organization that writes the policy
manuals, and provides training for, Medical Board investigators and
prosecutors all over the United States. The FSMB is the
"Quackbuster" police agency.
The "Quackbusters" use the FSMB to persecute two groups (1)
"Alternative Practitioners" within the MD ranks (they treat them like
traitors), and (2) non-licensed alternative health professionals (they
charge them with "practicing medicine without a license").
The "Quackbusters" through the FSMB, have been able to change
the focus of prosecutions against "bad doctors." They define "bad
doctors" as those that use alternative modalities - and maximum
penalties are exacted. We have seen in California, that real "bad
doctors," those that kill their patients, actually get off with a slap-onthe-hand by using the defense "but I prescribed a lot of drugs." State
medical Boards are not serving the needs of "we the people," they
are serving the needs of the "Quackbusters," and their paymasters.
Medical Board prosecutions are funded by the States - Barrett, and
his slime artists, don't have to spend a dime... I couldn't even count
the number of "alternative medicine" practitioners currently under
persecution from mis-informed Medical Board investigators and
10

prosecutors. The damage done to Americans from this attack is

incalculable...
BARRETT'S DUBIOUS CLAIMS ABOUT WHAT "HEALTH FRAUD"
REALLY IS...
The US government has indicated that "Health Fraud" is a major
problem in the United States Health Care system. Statistics show that
"conventional medicine" rips off the American public significantly each
year in bogus billings, false claims, unnecessary procedures and
tests, etc...
Attorney General Janet Reno has a special nationwide "Health Fraud
Prosecution Unit" to deal with this massive problem. The
prosecutions are against mega-greedy hospitals, HMOs, ambulance
companies, nursing facilities, etc. - all "Conventional" medical units not "Alternative."
But, if you peruse Stephen Barrett's (don't call him doctor, he's not
licensed) website, you get the impression that "allopaths" are to be
classified somewhere next to archangels - and "alternatives" are
snake-oil salesmen, akin to the devil's minions. Barrett clearly
defines, in smirky arrogance, health fraud as "alternative medicine."
Huh?
Doesn't Barrett read national statistics on health fraud? Of course he
does - he just ignores them. And "Barrett's parrots" at the FSMB
mimic their supreme commander's every word in their policy
statements. Anyone can read FSMB policy statements, in their
entirety, on the web. Just go to www.fsmb.org and start reading.
They, like Barrett, define "health fraud" as "alternative medicine," and
fail to even mention the real national "health fraud" statistics.
WHY THE FEAR IN THEIR EYES?
Three Reasons: Exposure, ridicule, and public rage.
(1). EXPOSURE - Health Freedom Fighters, tired of the persecutions,
and outnumbering the "Quackbusters" 100,000 to 1, are now
watching Barrett and his soldiers carefully. They've decided to put a
stop to Barrett and company. Lists are being made of who the
"Quackbuster Conspirators" are, what their function is, where they fit
into the conspiracy, who they work for, who their associates are,
11

where they live, and what their probable motives are. Their daily
activities, as "Quackbusters," are being monitored, and documented.
Health leaders consider Barrett, and company, to be running a
subversive organization working against the interests of America.
(2). RIDICULE - Examination of Barrett's operation proves that the
"Quackbusters" are a paper tiger. They are a construction with a 25
year old modus operandi. Their membership is small, they have an
even smaller core group, the industry is turning its back on their
extremism, and their leadership "public presence" is laughable. Their
support network could best be described as "pea-brained."
Their "annual meeting" for the conspiracy was held in a Super 8
motel in Missouri - 25 stalwarts attended from, at least, six different
plotter groups. Not very impressive.
"Bizarre" Stephen Barrett, his cronies and minions, even labeled two
time Nobel Prize Winner Linus Pauling as a "Quack." The American
public, in a consumer-driven movement, is rejecting, with laughter
and ridicule, Barrett and company's ludicrous assertions - hence the
term "Quackpot" is now used, commonly, to describe the self-named
"Quackbusters."
(3). PUBLIC RAGE - The American public is just now realizing two
things (a) that a good many of those "alternative" things being
blocked, and suppressed, have been around for a long while - but not
available to them because of the conspiracy, and (b) that the system
to find and put new things in place is corrupt - and works against
Americans. Every "cure" since polio has been suppressed, and the
proponents of those cures, reviled by the "Quackbuster
Conspirators."
Statistics show that every one of those "cures" worked to some
extent...
Barrett, his cronies, minions, and henchmen, have every reason to
fear public rage. Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev said it best. He
said, "We would never invade America. For every American has a
gun..."
"You mean my mother didn't have to die that horribly, or even die at
all?" is a question more, and more Americans are asking...

A Critical Review of Eva F. Briggs, M.D. Report on Gary Young,
Young Living
Essential Oils, and Raindrop Therapy
by Jim Lynn
On December 13, 2002, Quackwatch.org posted a report written by
Eva F. Briggs, M.D.,
a family practitioner in Marcellus, New York, entitled, A Critical Look
at Gary Young,
Young Living Essential Oils, and Raindrop Therapy.
This letter is a response to Dr. Briggs. I hold no ill will toward Dr.
Briggs, but she must be
held to account, since her purpose is to denigrate the beliefs and
practices of many
Young Living affiliates.
Quackwatch.org: To begin, Quackwatch.org is run by Stephen
Barrett, M.D, a
de-licensed doctor. He appears on various TV programs as a talking
head to give sound
bites that denounces any alternative therapy.
He is currently being sued for, among other things:
Mail Fraud, Wire Fraud, Perjury, Subornation of Perjury, Extortion,
Stalking, Terrorist
threats, Assault, Filing false police reports, Illegal lobbying, Illegal
influence of foreign
government officials and/or agencies, Trespass, Invasion of Privacy,
Violation of Civil
Rights, Civil Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations
(RICO), Abuse of
Process, Negligence, Civil Conspiracy:
(1) One of Barrett's quackbuster colleagues appeared as an expert
witness in the trial of
a dentist Florida. The witness gave entirely false credentials
including that he was a
13

former employee of or consultant to the FDA Office of Criminal

Investigation. In fact his
whole seven page resume seems to have been a tissue of lies. The
dentist was
acquitted in spite of the expert opinions of the fake witness.
(2) With this background, if Dr. Briggs was truly interested in
exposing fraud, she would
have submitted her report to a more reputable source than that of
Quackwatch.org. She
cites Quackbusters three times as a reference in her review.

Below are several websites to search more information about

Quackwatch and Mr.
Barrett:
http://www.geocities.com/cbpdoc/whoarethey.html
http://www.feingold.org/indexx1.html
http://www.chiroweb.com/archives/17/16/19.html
http://www.vaccinationnews.com/DailyNews/July2001/QuackwatchLa
wsuitFiled.htm
Bibliographical Incest:
Bibliographical incest is the practice of quoting oneself as a
reference. No worthy writer
does it, yet Dr. Briggs does so six times in her critical review.
By placing reference numbers at the end of such statements, Dr,
Briggs falsely leads her
readers to believe her information has a legitimate documented
source readers may
review. It does not. For example, her reference #20 reads, "Personal
communication to
Dr. Eva Briggs Nov 27, 2002." She does this six different times. So
how does one review
such a reference? No one can. Such references are not legitimate.
Used in a critical
review, they demonstrate a willful attempt to deceive, and amount to
nothing more than
she said he said kinds of rubbish.
Raindrop Therapy:
In her review, speaking of Raindrop Therapy, Dr. Briggs states, "A
14

thorough analysis of
the potential problems associated with each of the oils is detailed in
the National
Association of Holistic Aromatherapists' White Paper on Young
Living Oil's Raindrop
Therapy."
The so called "White Paper," better called "Toilet Paper," was written
by two nurses and
submitted to NAHA for publication. The White Paper takes a "critical
stand against the
use of the oils in "Raindrop Therapy."
NAHA has never accepted this paper, nor will you find it listed in any
of their material.
But Dr. Briggs statement makes it appear otherwise.
Far from condemning Raindrop Therapy, NAHA has adopted a new
Raindrop Policy
which will be published in their upcoming Aromatherapy Journal,
NAHAs official
publication.
The truth is that the authors of this White Paper have never tried
Raindrop Therapy
themselves. The oils they critiqued in their paper were not produced
by Young Living, so
there can be no valid relationship between the oils critiqued and
Young Living oils.
Further, the White Paper avoids all mention of the only scientifically
designed study of
Raindrop Therapy undertaken by David Stewart, Ph.D., R.A.; one of
only 100
Registered Aromatherapists in the entire U.S. Dr. Stewart is also a
member of NAHA, but
his work has been rebuffed due to anti Young Living sentiments by
some NAHA
members.
For an abstract of Dr. Stewart's Raindrop Therapy study, go to:
http://www.raindroptraining.com and click on "research."
Distributor Activity:
Dr. Briggs writes, "Another newsletter suggests that independent
15

distributors target
church groups by offering seminars on "biblical healing." The
distributors could then take
advantage of the assembled groups to attract new customers."
What she fails to say is that essential oils played a key role in the
early Christian
Church, and that there is a strong spiritual connection between the
oils and divine
healing (See Mark 6:13 and James 5:14). Why would a licensed
M.D. find fault with
healing of any kind, and most especially that which comes from
God?
Dr. Briggs goes on, "Another sales leader suggests stopping
complete strangers while
grocery shopping, telling them about YLEO, and then deducting the
gas mileage for the
shopping trip as a business expense." Those are not quite my words,
but I am honored
to be the one Dr. Briggs speaks of here.
Again, what Dr. Briggs fails to say is that any time a business owner
uses his vehicle to
do business qualifies as a legal tax deduction. The thrust of her
words is to make out
this activity as being unethical, when it is completely acceptable and
within the bounds
of law. Such business activity is carried out thousands of time every
day by the business
community at large.
D. Gary Young:
Dr. Briggs makes serious accusations against D. Gary Young,
founder of Young Living
Essential Oils, Inc.
It is not my intent to say anything for or against Gary Young. I will
say he is a man as any
other man. I know him as an honorable person, not the huckster Dr.
Briggs makes him
out to be.
The correct thing to do is to allow Gary to speak for himself. Should
he not do so will not
16

change my love for Young Living Essential Oils, or the Corporation's

mission. It will not
affect my work to make these therapeutic grade oils known to the
masses, nor to stop
my work exposing modern medicine for the fraud it is.
There is a higher authority at work here than any man-made
corporation, beyond the
failings of man. The real essence of Young Living Essential Oils is
not a man, but God,
Himself. For within the oils is the spark of God that brings healing. I
require no earthly
authority, or scientific structure to verify the healing value of Young
Living Essential Oils.
My authority is the Word of God. This is why I use and promote the
use of essential oils,
not because of any human authority.
There will forever be people like Dr. Briggs and Stephen Barrett to
pull down, to attempt
to discredit the work of others who do not represent their interest. So
be it. But I for one
will not live my life to conform to their interest. I will not listen unless
they can speak with
honest credentials and without bias. Until then, I will live and seek
truth with the common
sense and mind God gave me.

Hello,
I can't keep my mouth shut about Gary Young either. Thank God for
Gary Young. Not only am I healed but hundreds of my patients are
healed because of Young Living Essential oils. When I read my first
little info book almost 6 years ago, I knew that here was a man
inspired by God to bring these oils to us and help us heal.
17

Gary, in Cancun, mentioned having read this information. He said it

brought tears to his eyes and he thought he must be the most horrible
wicked man on the face of the earth. Well, all I can say is that people
throughout history have stoned the prophets and they even crucified
one we consider to be the master healer of all time. In my judgement
book, when someone had a good thing going, opposition rears its
ugly head.
About his knowledge, being a chiropractor and having gone through
years of accredited education, all I can say is that the man is brillant.
Gary, we love you. Keep up the good work.

Bonnie,
Most of us here understand your original question and believe you.
Because JOY is a YL list, questions like yours arise every few
months.
The reason they arise is that people opposed to YL publish Internet
articles and these articles can then be found with a simple web
search.
Hence your question.
Quack Watch is one such website that has published defaming
information against YL and Gary Young. The IDMA list is another
forum group who also has information published against YL.
This is fact, not fiction.
As list moderator of JOY, my job is to insure list members observe
list rules and to protect the list against inflammatory remarks directed
against YL. I removed the link you included in your message because
18

that URL serves no good purpose. You are not required to agree
with my decision, I am just answering your question above.
Quack Watch is the quack here, not YL. If you do a word search
for Quack watch you will find a number of people have published
information exposing the true intentions of Quack Watch. Quack
Watch is pro allopathic medicine and anti alternative medicine.
I could point you to a specific newsletter and group that is fighting
Quack Watch, but I prefer that we each do our own research.
BTW, The MD who wrote the Quack Watch piece against YL
and Gary Young is herself in need of help. her distaste started
when one of her patients found healing with YL. I could say
more about this case, but it is best left unsaid. The point is this.
People do what they do for a reason, right or wrong. And there
is no shortage of people or groups willing to add fuel to the fire,
whatever the issue...either for or against. It works both ways.
As reasoning people, our task is to make decisions based
on facts and reason, not hearsay. If Gary Young were a
complete fraud, but the products work, would that be cause
to avoid their use? The question is given to illustrate
a point. People are fraudulent, not nature's products.
If someone finds healing using a natural substance,
why should an allopathic MD oppose its use?
I can only judge Gary by the lives he has changed. I know
if people were to judge me by any other standard, I would
woefully fall short of acceptance. And I think that is true
with all of us.
All of us are guilty of fraud in some manner or another.
It is part of out heritage as being imperfect beings. To
argue differently is itself a fraud. If you find guilt in Gary
Young and decide to avoid using YL products, that is
your choice to do so.
I am not saying Gary Young is guilty of any allegation.
I do not know, one way or another. But I am saying we
all make choices on how we respond to any issue in life.
And how we respond can make all the difference in
the lives of those who look to others for healing.

Re: disturbing link
Dear JOY list,
Due to my work, I have become well acquainted with several suspect
individuals like Dr. Stephen Barrett and related groups of attackers
with well known connections to large multi-billion dollar
corporations and special interest groups, including major lobbying
groups located in Washington, D.C. You need to know that there are
many competitors in the world who have hidden monetary reasons to
attack Gary Young and Young Living, but their attacks are certainly
not isolated to only Young Living and their true motives are not
always easy for the general public to decipher.
As far as I call tell, Dr. Barrett has no training in the field of
aromatherapy or essential oil medicine and has not published any
research papers specifically on essential oils, but yet he claims to
be expert enough to debunk them as a fraud. At the same time, he
chooses to ignore all the French medical research and books by
numerous MDs such as Dr. Jean Valnet, Dr. Daniel Penoel and other
doctors and scientists.
So who is Stephen Barrett,MD? Besides being a retired psychiatrist,
he is closely affiliated with among others (since 1978 as stated on
Barrett's own website), a group called the AMERICAN COUNCIL ON
SCIENCE & HEALTH (ACSH) based primarily in Washington, D.C.
Dr.
Barrett does not hide the fact that he has a close affiliation with
ACSH and similar big industry front groups. He has even served on
the
ACSH board of directors and seems to be proud of it, according to his
website.
You might wonder who is the ACSH group? The ACSH is one of
20

several
dozen big industry front groups who, in my opinion, are no more than
propaganda-PR arms for the big pharmaceutical firms, tobacco
companies, chemical companies, plastics makers, oil companies, and
many other vested interests, who have many billions invested in
specialized drugs, etc. and do not want people using cheap cures like
vitamins, minerals, essential oils, homeopathics, massage,
acupuncture, etc. So I don't find it surprising or even shocking
that Dr. Barrett (and essentially ACSH) is attacking all forms of
alternative medicine and deeming it "quackery." You can find 300
similar experts like Barrett listed on the ACSH website and they are
likely all getting big bucks from the large drug companies etc. who
are protecting their bottom lines. Who else could afford to hire 300
experts?
The ACSH is pure evil in my opinion and they will attempt to
persuade
the public that little bits of poison are actually good for you in
your food, water, air, medical treatment protocols, or cosmetics. I
know of many top independent scientists who complain about the PR
junk science that's put out to the media by the ACSH and their
hatchet spokespersons like Dr. Stephen Barrett.
Barrett's website is called "Quackwatch" and, as a scientist myself,
I find that it's riddled with half-truths, lies and outright
distortions, especially those he attacks like legitimate medical
doctors doing alternative medicine because the big drug companies
don't want people using cheap options which hurts the pocketbooks
of
the drug cartel. I heard about "Quackwatch" through my
environmental
work several years ago.
Another article on Barrett's website is by Eva Briggs, MD, who is a
collaborator of Barrett's. There is information in her articles
that's highly misleading and erroneous on essential oils and health.
One example is a quote by Dr. Robert P. Adams, of Baylor
University's
Biology Dept. in Waco, Texas. Briggs quotes Dr. Adams as
dismissing
the use of essential oils for health to be nothing more than a sham!
I disagree with Adams completely. So who is Dr. Robert P. Adams?
He
has a Ph.D. from the same phytochemistry-plant natural products
21

program that I do, but he graduated a few years earlier. As far as I

know, he has never seriously studied the use of essential oils on
human health or else he would not be making such foolish
statements
as Briggs quotes him on. I would never approach Dr. Adams and ask
him
such a question, simply because he studies essential oils for their
systematic distribution in plants such as junipers, but not their
health effects on human beings. So Briggs was obviously looking for
someone to make a biased, negative statement about essential oils
and
human health. I have never seen anyone else quote Dr. Adams in the
essential oil literature concerning the health benefits of oils
because he is not an expert in the field in my opinion! Briggs
should have spoken to Daniel Penoel, MD in France, but she clearly
avoided interviewing a legitimate healthcare expert and professional
with more than twenty years of experience and knowledge in use of
essential oils on people with illnesses. Even Andrew Weil, MD, a
graduate from Harvard Medical School, supports herbs, essential oils
and alternative medicine, but Stephen Barrett has attacked Dr. Weil
as well along with Dr. Deepak Chopra and other MDs doing
alternative
medicine.
Perhaps Gary Young should wear Barrett's criticism as a badge of
honor that he and Young Living are so high profile as to deserve
being scrutinized by unscrupulous people with hidden agendas.
You can search the website of www.PRwatch.org (it's run by
independent investigative journalists John Stauber and Sheldon
Rampton), which is devoted to debunking the likes of ACSH and the
Stephen Barretts of the world. Articles about the ACSH industry front
group appear many times on the PRwatch website if you search for
them. Also note several recent books by these two journalists on the
propaganda subject like "Toxic Sludge is Good for You: Lies, Damn
Lies and the PR Industry;" and "Trust Us, We're Experts."
Be careful what you read and make sure you know who is writing it!
Sincerely,
Neil J. Carman, Ph.D.

Quackbuster Stephen Barrett:

"Not an Expert," Declares Judge!
Stephen Barrett, the Wizard of Odds, played his odds and lost. He
just hasn't had a very good year.
Stephen Barrett has attacked some of the most successful alternative
therapies in the world. He has issued threats and initiated lawsuits,
and until last year, got away with all of it. Then, his world began to
crumble.
Barrett filed a lawsuit against King Bio Pharmaceuticals, makers of
homeopathics. Now, science has already established the value of
homeopathy, but Barrett, ignoring science while pandering to the
pharmaceutical industry, just had to do something. The result? Here
is an excerpt from the judge's decision:
As for his credential as an expert on FDA regulation of homeopathic
drugs, the Court finds that Dr. Barrett lacks sufficient qualifications in
this area.
Expertise in FDA regulation suggests a knowledge of how the agency
enforces federal statutes and the agency's own regulations. Dr.
Barrett's purported legal and regulatory knowledge is not apparent.
He is not a lawyer, although he claims he attended several semesters
of correspondence law school. While Dr.
Barrett appears to have had several past conversations with FDA
representatives, these appear to have been sporadic, mainly at his
own instigation, and principally for the purpose of gathering
information for his various articles and Internet web-sites. He has
never testified before any governmental panel or agency on issues
relating to FDA regulation of drugs. Presumably his professional
23

continuing education experiences are outdated given that he has not

had a current medical licence [sic] in over seven years. For these
reasons, there is no sound basis on which to consider Dr. Barrett
qualified as an expert on the issues he was offered to address.
Moreover, there was no real focus to his testimony with respect to
any of the issues in this case associated with Defendants' products.
C. Credibility of Plaintiff's experts
Furthermore, the Court finds that both Dr. Sampson and Dr. Barrett
are biased heavily in favor of the Plaintiff and thus the weight to be
accorded their testimony is slight in any event. Both are long-time
board members of the Plaintiff; Dr. Barrett has served as its
Chairman. Both participated in an application to the U.S. FDA during
the early 1990s designed to restrict the sale of most homeopathic
drugs. Dr.
Sampson's university course presents what is effectively a one-sided,
critical view of alternative medicine. Dr. Barrett's heavy activities in
lecturing and writing about alternative medicine similarly are focused
on the eradication of the practices about which he opines. Both
witnesses' fees, as Dr. Barrett testified, are paid from a fund
established by Plaintiff NCAHF from the proceeds of suits such as the
case at bar. Based on this fact alone, the Court may infer that Dr.
Barrett and Sampson are more likely to receive fees for testifying on
behalf of NCAHF in future cases if the Plaintiff prevails in the instant
action and thereby wins funds to enrich the litigation fund described
by Dr. Barrett. It is apparent, therefore, that both men have a direct,
personal financial interest in the outcome of this litigation. Based on
all of these factors, Dr. Sampson and Dr. Barrett can be described as
zealous advocates of the Plaintiff's position, and therefore not neutral
or dispassionate witnesses or experts. In light of these affiliations and
their orientation, it can fairly be said that Drs. Barrett and Sampson
are themselves the client, and therefore their testimony should be
accorded little, if any, credibility on that basis as well.
This was just one loss in court. The story gets better!
Some of you know how we here at the Wellness Directory of
Minnesota have taken an stance against fluoridation. The stuff is just
not what the American Dental Association has been preaching. I do
not drink the stuff and I have just three fluoride treatments a
yearand then detox the heck out of myself.
Well, Darlene Sherrell ( http://www.rvi.net/~fluoride
24

) has a web site dedicated to fighting Fluoride Poisoning. She has

been under attack by Stephen Barrett and his ilk for some time. She
fought back and attacked Barrette. Barrett filed a libel lawsuit against
her. He's threatened many people with defamation of character
lawsuits (including yours
truly) but this was the first time it has gotten to court.
Here is the background, from the Health Freedom Law web site
(www.healthfreedomlaw.com):
In the summer of 1998, Darlene Sherrell, challenged Barrett to come
forward to name a study demonstrating the safety of current fluoride
levels in drinking water and the effect excessive daily intake of
fluoride as a possible cause to chronic fluoride poisoning. At the time,
in response to Sherrell's challenge Barrett was "careful to state that
he is and was aware of hundreds of studies pertaining to the safety of
fluoridation of drinking water..." However, "...He did not testify that
any study demonstrates the safety of current fluoridation levels..."
Barrett had rebuked Sherrell's continuous challenges and sent a
message to her stating that she (Sherrell) was "delusional."
Long story short, case was dismissed. Barrett who claims to be
backed by the FDA, FTC, DHHS, NCI, HIH, AMA, and ADA showed
up with one witness and his own lame testimony. Barrett claimed to
have hundreds of studies, but couldn't produce one.
Next, Barrett attacked that famous quack, Dr Hulda Clark who says
she can cure all diseases. Now, personally, I don't believe anyone
can cure all diseases. There is something very mystical about
healing. And Dr Hulda is probably a bit whacko. But, I still love her.
She has some darn good ideas and science is beginning to prove her
out. Well, Barrett lost his case against her too!
Now, this isn't over yet, because there are laws against filing frivolous
lawsuits and Barrett is just beginning to feel the backlash of his
programmed stupidity. He's been slapped left and right with lawsuits
for filing frivolous lawsuits, and it is estimated that he now owes
somewhere close to half a million dollars.
And now that he's been losing in court, people are starting to sue
him. Century Press just filed a $10 Million lawsuit against him (Hulda
Clark's publishing company).

25

After years of threatening everyone and everything with lawsuits,

Barrett is on the losing end of every single one of them. This being
the case, he dropped his lawsuit against Dr Joseph Mercola, who
runs one of the best alternative medicine web sites in the world (and
much of what we find and pass on to you comes from the good
doctor).
So, to all those wonderful organizations who give credence to the
garbage published at Quackwatch (and their ilk) and to the URAC
(www.urac.org) that certifies Medically Sound Web Sites (Barrett's
web site is certified by URAC!), we say, your time is running out.
Barrett is no expert, he has no science to back up his claims, and his
web site has enough BS to fertilize all the farms in Iowa, Minnesota,
and Nebraska.
Medicine as we know it, is on the brink of destruction. Healing is
where the heart is. The future of Medicine is going to be based upon
what Edison and Socrates tried to tell us long ago: "We are what we
eat" along with what ancient texts, including the Bible, have told us
for centuries: Our Creator
(Nature) has supplied us with all the medicines we will ever need.
Now, if we can stop the corruption of our environment by monied
interests, heck, Paradise isn't too far off.

It kind of reminds me of
27

spiritual terrorism and I hate to spend too much time defending the
issues, because it gives me less time for my life mission which is to
educate people about oils now, so that people in the future do not
need to be so sick...
I've been with Gary and Mary Young
thousands of hours, I've stayed at their home, traveled with them to
Turkey, Egypt, and France, and I know them very well... When you're
lugging suitcases and riding in hot, dusty busses for hours, you get
to know people really well...
I recall a time in Turkey when we had traveled all day on a bus to
visit distilleries, and it was hot and dark and we were all tired,
including Gary and Mary... We were riding back to our hotel, and
Gary Young, who wanted to educate us as much as was humanly
possible,
28

spoke to us, in the dark, about distilling oils...

Thank you Vicki,

I will be most happy to add your post into my archives, and share it
with my downline and others interested in knowing the truth about
Gary.
I agree with you, someday soon YLEO and Gary are going to have to
respond to these people who constantly try to defile him and his
reputation.
As for me, if he did it tomorrow, it would not be soon enough for me...
Thanks again
Frank

Hi Frank,
Here's another compilation, with the last one being written by Gary's

a couple of individuals...

I knew he was an allopathic doctor angry because he had to pay

Subject: Re: Gary young Files???
Hello all..
I am sure there will be a gazillion responses to this one, but I
wanted to say a few things too :)
Just yesterday I was going through some OLD files, and found my
own questions and answers along the same vein. Well..four years
32

later, after really holding Gary Young and Young Living up to the
Light...I am still here.
What I did find about the naysayers is that the HUGE majority of
them were actually on the nasty side, and had sort of a club...you
were in or out. No gray. At one time I really enjoyed posting to
the newsgroups, but I got very weary of EVERYTHING I said being
diminished or attacked because I happened to be a Young Living
Distributor.
I decided to let the experience I was having with the products speak
for themselves...
I have this email saved - since I don't have the person's permission
to share it, and I haven't seen them on this list, I have deleted
his name (some might remember him..he was an old BOW member
and
was a Car....) I just remembered I had it, and it says it pretty
well! ( Graham mentioned below is the man who keeps the "YL
Files")
<<Why? Dr. P has tested the oils and posted to this list that they
have good quality oils, in fact better than some provided by
suppliers
on the list. I agree that for single oils you may get them other
places at less money. However, I have found their blends do exactly
what they say they will. For my patients I want blends that perform.
I have been working with some suppliers who are trying to match
the results found with the YL blends. S** I even passed those
suppliers,
as well as some single oil suppliers
that I feel provide good products, on to you.
I also don't agree with the broad statement that YL distributors
don't have considerations for others and are just out to sell oils.
I have spent 20 years working with oils. Three years ago when
I started utilizing the YL products I was one of the those who voiced
that YL distributors need training programs in the use and
distribution
of the oils. Yet, YL is castigated for their practices when what
they do is no different than other suppliers who sell their oils
to people with no experience or training who are going to set them
out on a counter in their little shop and tell their customers how
to use the oils. In fact, I have found only a couple of oil
suppliers that request your credentials before they will sell you their
33

product.
I don't agree with their marketing philosophy but I have choice
of either following it or not. No one forces me to use their
philosophies
(unlike a cult which would require me to follow their edicts).
Also, many of the negatives relative to YL that have been posted
to this list are practiced by others. I have seen, in books presented
on this list as "must reads" as well as methods utilized by French
MDs utilizing EOs, many of the same aspects as presented in YL
literature
(oral use of EO, EO suppositories, etc.) Just this week there was a
discussion relating to the
knowledge, or lack thereof, of a person who has several books
relative
to aromatherapy on bookshelves and has previously been touted as
knowledgeable in the field. This points out the fact that there
are various agreements or disagreements relative to the practice of
aromatherapy.
Keep in mind that you don't have to agree with the YL marketing
philosophy to utilize the oils. Also, keep in mind that Graham's
webpages present a lot of innuendoes and unsupported
suppositions.
In fact if you ask Graham if he has ever read any of YL literature,
attended any of the YL seminars, used YL products or bellied up
to the bar to pay to have them tested so he
could base his insinuations on concrete evidence you
get...silence...which, to me, speaks for itself. >>
This was years ago..today we educate more, YL has responded to
the
distributors need for info in the box when the product is
shipped...geez Louise...
I love the YL products...admittedly at times I have found myself
frustrated with the company, but I have seen YL truly move in
wonderful forward directions.
The important thing for ALL NEWBIES to remember is EDUCATE

Hi Elizabeth
It's a good idea to ask what they base their negative comments on.
I found this for you....there's more but too long for this forum
Health Industry Icons' Endorsements
Here are some quotes from the new YL Company Profile, Code

"Young Living's
essential oils are the finest I have yet analyzed. I gave their lavender
oil my highest rating - 5 stars. It scored high in desired esters and
low
in the
oxygenerated compounds and ketones that can give the oil a bad
smelling
astringent quality. Dr. Young's uncompromising attention to quality

as well as
his never-ending pursuit of perfection are what make Young Living's
essential
oils so very different from many commonly
found available aromatherapy products."

Subject: Fw: [PineHillGroup] mud slinging about YL and Gary
Young(question)
Hi, for the information about all the mud slinging about Young Living
and Gary is all trash and lies. When people see a good thing they
want it for themselves so they try to start a business and they have to
bring Young Living and Gary down so they can look good. They are
just jealous because they don't have the recongitions that Gary has.
A lot of things they have said that Gary didn't do, I was there with him
when he taught the course in Turkey for two weeks I didn't just go
there for the fun of it I went there to learn and take a class from a
college. I was there when Gary talked the Group of Medical Doctors
in France and because of his research he talked on, they had him talk
for a good hour or more. Each speaker was only allowed 45 min. A
lot of people out there say they know more then Gary because he
never took any schooling well they are full of bull. Gary has more
knowledge in his little finger then they do. They learn just a little
about the essential oils and think they know everything. Gary has
been taking classes 20 years and still is taking classes. Gary's
French instructor was at our convention and he told us that he was so
please with Gary because he has never had a student that knows
more then his teacher does and do all the things he has done. So
that is quite a complement in itself. Some people say to me you
should know everything because you have taken all Gary's classes.
36

No I don't, there is always something to learn and I will keep on

taking classes.
For all this garbage just trash it in the garbage where it belongs and
don't feed on it because this is what they want.
Let there be love and light in your life and take care. Love Nancy

If someone tells you about Quackwatch and tries to put down Gary
Young or Young Living, now you have a resource to help you correct
them.....
Log into your YLEO "back office" and scroll down to Distributor

Quackwatch Rebuttal
Have you run across an article on the Internet that made some
shocking accusations about Gary Young and Young Living Essential
Oils?
Quackwatch, the website that Stephen Barrett operates, is where this
disinformation originated. Quackwatch seems to exist just to attack
natural health. Over 200 alternative and complementary practitioners
are under fire at this website.
A detailed rebuttal to the false charges made by Barrett has been
written. Clicking here will lead to answers about why this unwarranted
attack on Gary Young occurred and who may be behind it.
Here is Dr. Friedman's Text Article "brief version"
Quackwatch Rebuttal Executive Summary
Alternative and complementary medicine are on everyone's radar
screen. Not only are more Americans visiting alternative practioners
than primary care physicians, but the U.S. government's National
Institutes of Health organized the National Center for Complementary
and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) to find ways to integrate
alternative medicine into conventional medicine.

37

The downside to the explosion of knowledge about nutrition, natural

alternatives, and increased health is that detractors are springing up
determined to halt choice in healthcare.
Organizations like Stephen Barrett's Quackwatch and Robert Baratz's
National Council Against Health Fraud (NCAHF) have seemingly
bottomless pockets to attack natural health proponents with lengthy
articles on their websites and through expensive lawsuits. Stephen
Barrett solicits reader donations on his website. He no longer
practices psychiatry. How is he funding his expensive lawsuits?
Because you can't patent nature (and thereby profit from it),
pharmaceutical companies apparently are threatened by the rise of
natural medicine and people seeking improved health through
nutrition and the use of essential oils. Are they the deep pockets
behind these front organizations?
D. Gary Young and his company, Young Living Essential Oils, have
come under attack on the Internet. A lengthy article on Barrett's
website has rumors, gossip, and innuendo presented as if they were
fact.
Gary Young is not the only natural health proponent whose integrity is
being questioned. Several hundred people have made the list on
Stephen Barrett's Quackwatch site with articles assailing their beliefs
and their personal lives. Others who Stephen Barrett has gone after
are Andrew Weil, M.D., Julian Whitaker, M.D., Ralph Moss, Ph.D.,
Gary Null, Ph.D., Earl Mindell, R.Ph., and Bernie Siegel, M.D. Even
the late Dr. Linus Pauling has become a target.
Please click here and look for the "Quackwatch Exposed" link found
on the right to see an article that explains in detail who these
"quackwatchers" are, why they are attacking the leaders of the
natural health movement, and why it is vital that people listen with
discernment to their voices. The disinformation about Gary Young
and Young Living Essential Oils is refuted and the truth is
documented.
Gary Young is adamant that people like Stephen Barrett have the
right to believe whatever they wish in regard to healthcare. But he is
vehemently opposed to Barrett endangering healthcare choice. There
is much more under attack than just Gary Young's good name.
Freedom is costly to uphold. Gary hopes you will read the "rest of the
story" as Paul Harvey is fond of saying.
