Reflection Paper: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13
Back when I still attended Sunday school, we were tasked to
memorize a new Bible verse by the end of the class and I vividly recall
having to memorize this particular phrase in 1 Corinthians Love is
patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not
proud. because it is one that has stuck with me through the years. It
does not take someone wise to understand it because even as a young
girl it already meant something to me. Its simple yet resonates a
wonderful lesson. Through our lifetime, we will encounter different
kinds of love but it is Gods love, which is the most powerful.
The apostle Paul argues that love is an action and not merely a
feeling as most of us come to understand it nowadays. Therefore, if
love is indeed an action, let us study what God has to say about love.
In the sentence, If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but
do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
Paul says that you can speak in tongues all you want but if you do it
without love, then you are just purely making excessive noise.
Speaking in tongues does not only mean the gift once possessed by
chosen disciples, it could also mean a language of ones private prayer.
The rest of the verses to follow discuss that Knowledge is gaining a
deep understanding of Gods word, Faith is the ability to trust His plans
and intentions but all those without Love is for a lost cause. This is one
for us to reflect upon. When we do duties in Church or local ministry,
do we really love what we are doing? Do we feel a sense of obligation
towards these? Paul then proceeds to discuss the behavior of Love. We
begin to read the unselfish nature of Love in the following statements
as patient, kind, not jealous and does not brag. There are even
instances when we were told never to give change to beggars because
the might use it for abusive substances like drugs or alcohol, or when
some people stop to aid a motorist in distress and only ends up being
robbed. Suspicion and mistrust are far worse than being gullible. Love
trusts, always. Even in the court a suspect is always thought of as
innocent until proven guilty.
Even as a Christian I do have my shortcomings when it comes to
Love. There have been many instances when I have said things that I
didnt mean but did so because I was provoked. There are still many
things I need to learn about Love through reading the Bible, listening to
Church services and through experience. I cannot also say without
doing, I need to put actions into my words because Paul explains love
as an action. Relationships are not merely limited to having feelings for

a certain person, both parties also have to work to make the

relationship better and fruitful
