Tutorial Problems on Load Estimation

1 (a)
Discuss the various loads for estimating the cooling load of an auditorium.
(b)
In an air-conditioned space, 50 kga/s of fresh air at 45 oC dry bulb temperature
and 30% relative humidity is introduced. The room air at 25 oC dry-bulb temperature
and 50% RH is recirculated at 450 kga/s. The mixed air flows over a cooling coil
which has apparatus dew point of 12oC and bypass factor of 0.15. Determine the
conditions at outlet of cooling coil, RSH and RLH, the cooling load of coil and the
condensate rate. The saturation pressure of water at required temperatures are

h = 1.005 t + w (2500 + 1.88 t) kJ/ kga, where, t is in oC and kga refers to kg of dry
air.(ET 2009)

conditions are 36oC DBT and 27oC WBT. The various loads in the
office are (a) Solar heat gain 8.5 kW, (b) Sensible heat gain per occupant 83 W (c)
Latent heat gain per occupant 100W

m3/min. Sketch the flow diagram of the air conditioning system and show the
processes on psycrometric chart.Assuming 40% fresh air and 60 % of recirculated
air passing through the evaporation coil and the by-pass factor of 0.12, determine
(i) Dew point temperature of the coil and (ii) Capacity of the plant.

In an air-conditioning plant, an air handling unit supplies a total of 4000 m 3/
min of dry air which comprises by mass 20 % of fresh air at 39 oC DBT and 26oC WBT
and 80% recirculated air at 24oC DBT and 50% RH. The air leaves the cooling coil at
12oC saturated. Calculate (i) total cooling load and (ii) room heat gain. Also show
the processes on psychrometric chart.

conditioning system with the following data:
Out side conditions 34oC DBT and 28oC WBT,
Inside conditions 24oC DBT and 50% RH,
Volume of air supplied 0.4 m3/ min/ person,
Sensible heat load in room 125600 kJ/h,
Latent heat load in the room 42000 kJ/h. Find the sensible heat factor of the plant.

60% RH. The outdoor conditions are 40oC DBT and 27oC WBT. The various loads in
the auditorium are: sensible and latent heat loads per person, 80 W and 50 W
respectively; lights and fans 15000 W; sensible heat gain through glass, walls,
ceiling etc., 15000 W. Air infiltration is 20 m3/ min and fresh air supply is 100 m3/
min. Recirculated room air and fresh air are mixed before entering the cooling coils.

The bypass factor of the coils is 0.1. Determine the grand total heat load, effective
SHF and apparatus dew point.
