A 656 Grade 80 Steel Plate

ASTM A 656 Grade 80 steel plate is a high-strength, low-alloy hot-rolled structural

product with an excellent combination of strength and formability and is intended for
applications where increased strength-to-weight ratios are required. The combination of
micro-alloying and thermo-mechanical controlled processing employed in SSABs
production processes offer an economical balance of high strength, formability, and
toughness. SSAB ASTM A 656 Grade 80 is available as cut-to-length plate or as
discrete, as-rolled plate.

Typical Applications
Typical applications for A 656 Grade 80 include demanding structural applications
where strength-to-weight ratios are maximized such as truck frames, transport trailers,
construction equipment, agriculture equipment, crane booms, mobile manlifts, and rail
cars.

Available Sizes
Cut-to-Length Plate:
Thicknesses 0.188 to 0.500 (4.8 to 12.7 mm) in widths 38 to 96 (965 to 2438 mm)
Discrete Plate:
Thicknesses 0.375 to 0.750 (9.5 to19.1 mm) in widths 84 to 109 (2133 to 2769 mm)
Please inquire for other sizes.

Chemical Composition
Chemical composition meets the chemical requirements of ASTM A 656 Grade 80.

Weldability
SSAB A 656 Grade 80 can be easily welded using suitable shop or field practices by
all the usual low-hydrogen welding processes; Shielded Metal-Arc (SMAW) with
AWS-E9018 electrode, Submerged-Arc (SAW) with flux/wire combination of
matching strength, Gas Metal-Arc (GMAW) with ER90 wire, and Flux Cored
(FCAW) with E90T wire. In all cases, except submerged arc welding, a
precautionary preheat of 250F (120C) is recommended to remove any surface
moisture for thicknesses up to 3/4".

Corrosion Resistance
SSAB A 656 Grade 80 steel plate has enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance in
comparison to non-copper bearing carbon steel plate products. Typical

Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance Index (ASTM G101) = 5.7.

Formability
A 656 Grade 80 exhibits excellent cold forming characteristics. Recommended
minimum inside bend radii for cold forming are tabulated below:

To reduce the potential for cracking in cold bending, shear burrs and gas cut edges on
and adjacent to the bend axis should be removed by grinding prior to cold forming.
Additionally, sharp corners on edges and on punched or gas cut holes located along
the bend axis should be removed prior to cold forming.
Applications requiring a tighter inside bend radii should be inquired.

Charpy V-notch impact toughness requirements are not included in the basic
specification, but can be added as a supplementary requirement. Please inquire for
applications requiring a specified minimum toughness.
