AT LEAST, I
THOUGHT SO

it was Greens turn as he began his
preparations for driving Bloodhound

So far, Ive been getting acquainted
with the car in Radicals official test
and tuition sessions. Ive driven a fair
amount of performance machinery
on circuits but never a racing car,
which, unsurprisingly, turns out to
be a different proposition.
The SR1 is a novices car in name
only. It weighs just 480kg before my
75kg climbs aboard. The 185bhp
output comes from a 1.3-litre Suzuki
motorbike engine. It also has fully
working aerodynamics, producing
noticeable levels of downforce.
It is uncompromised by the need
to be used on the road. Every part
of its make-up is designed to get
you around a circuit as quickly as

911 GT3 RS
20.5.15, Germany Hardcore 911 is unlike any
before it, but youll need to take your brave pills
FIRSTDRIVE
Electrically assisted steering has been reworked to cope with higher grip levels, and its as good as it gets; for all the RSs track focus, the interior has an everyday civility
Here is a production
road car with 80%
of the downforce
of Porsches pure
race GT3 Cup car
as a wider front track and a Perspex
rear screen and rear quarterlights,
this RS has been enhanced in many
other ways, of which the larger
engine is just one.
Most telling is the decision to base
the RS on the extra-wide 911 Turbo
body, making it 28mm wider at the
back than the GT3. But there is also a
magnesium roof and carbonfibre
front wings to go with its carbonfibre
bonnet and engine cover. The result
is a car thats 10kg lighter than the
GT3 an astonishing achievement
given the extra weight of the Turbo
body and larger 20in and 21in wheels.
FIRSTDRIVE
Aero package is a big differentiator between this and any previous road-going 911; front spoiler alone adds 110kg of downforce, rear wing 220kg
Front-sited boot provides some practicality; roll cage behind the two seats is part of the Clubsport package thats standard on the GT3 RS
different specifications suggest.
Perhaps greater. More significant,
the entire focus of the car has
changed. In the GT3, the powertrain
is the superstar, the engine snarling
up to 9000rpm supported by the
worlds best two-pedal transmission.
In the RS, they are relegated to
supporting roles.
Drive it fast around a really
challenging track and it behaves
precisely as you hoped it might. Grip
levels are withering, the steering as
good as you could hope anything
with electric power assistance to be.
Theres just a touch of stabilising
understeer when you turn in to slow
corners, but it can be cancelled with
an imperceptible lift of your right
foot. Traction from those sticky
Michelins is simply superb, so you
can drive it like an old 911: slow in,
then load up the outer tyre from the
apex and hammer up the straight. Or
you can do something else entirely.
This is a car with another level,
a level beyond that of any 911 Ive
driven, and I dont just mean grip.
Its a level that lets you drive it

Racing rookie Mark Tisshaw is tackling the Radical SR1 Cup this year.

It wasnt raining for my second

three laps against the clock to see
who goes best under pressure.
At Snetterton, Id had the whole day
to get to know the car and circuit and
there was no competitive element
at the end. The reverse was true at
Bedford, and the car now had a full
Autocar livery. There was no hiding.
I struggled to get back up to speed
while having to learn the course.
After half a dozen laps, I knew my
lefts and rights well enough to push
harder, but some bad habits from
Snetterton had carried over. We
hooked up the video camera to see if I

equation at least a little. But, as
evidenced in all sorts of ways which
well come to, a perfect world is not
where the 1 Series exists.
And so the 116d remains a tight fit
when you slide in behind the wheel.
For longer-legged drivers, with the
steering column at full telescopic
range and the seat slid all the way
back, it can be an awkward squeeze
just to slip in between the B-pillar
and the steering wheel. And once
youre in, the cabin feels snug around
your extremities more so, in fact,
than the interiors of most superminis
do. If you dont like that close-fitting
impression from a compact car,
chances are itll just feel restrictive.
In the rear cabin, the entry and
exit routine is even more awkward,
and theres limited head and foot
room in particular so limited, in
fact, that theres space for teenagers
and smaller adults only. The boot is a
more reasonable size, being smallish
but within about 10% of family

expectation hung, albatross-like,
around its neck, but with only three
cylinders to call its own, it might
not initially inspire the utmost
confidence. The new 1.5-litre triple,
however, proves to be a credit to
both the car and the BMW brand,
delivering admirably peppy and
flexible power combined with
strong real-world economy and an
industrious brand of likeability.
BMWs six-speed manual gearbox
is certainly an acquired taste, though,
and its the only transmission on
offer if you want the 89g/km of the
Efficient Dynamics Plus model. The
springy, notchy, occasionally fussy
shift feel will be instantly familiar
to long-time BMW owners, but the
Loading up the front wheels
under braking makes the front end
feel more positive, such as on the
downhill drop into T5.

TECHNICAL LAYOUT
Bucks convention for compact hatchbacks by being longways-engined and rear-wheel drive (although the next version will
switch to transverse front drive). Three-pot engine is mounted a long way back presumably for better weight distribution,
although we couldnt confirm that on the scales. All-independent suspension is still quite rare for a hatchback, too.

Think Id
rather forgo
a few options
and pay an extra couple
of grand and 2% extra
tax for an eight-speed
auto 116d. In top, itll
probably be just as
frugal as the ED but
easier to drive the rest
of the time.
SPEC ADVICE
ore than a decade into its life, the 1 Series remains an enigma for BMW, you suspect, every
bit as much as for the car-buying public. The idea of a compact, rear-drive alternative to the
hatchback mainstream is as appealing now as it was in 2004, but BMWs execution retains
its original flaws: a shortage of space, a deficit of truly premium cabin ambience and a
dynamic repertoire that falls frustratingly between two stalls. The 116d is neither as rounded nor
as refined as its most polished rivals, nor is it the dynamic junior BMW that the company deserves.
You can appreciate why Munich is reaching for the reset button, but it has done well to put the
116d on such a sound footing on paper. This cars new engine, and the performance, fuel economy
and emissions it grants, are credit-worthy, but the rest of car simply isnt. The next 1 Series will
need to leave much more than its propshaft behind if its going to be much better.

I have never been a fan of the muchdiscussed Jaguar XJS, surely the
strangest-looking Jag ever, but I am
willing to forgive all for just one reason,
which is that it donated its platform to
Aston Martin to create the DB7, surely
one of the best-looking cars of all time.
Without the DB7, Aston Martin may have
folded forever, so thanks, XJS.

Rolls-Royce Phantom
From 310,000
BMW built a phenomenal Rolls-Royce when it took over in 1998.
Wonderfully made and knowingly aristocratic. AAAAB
Rolls-Royce Wraith
From 230,000
An intimate and involving Rolls-Royce; less grand, perhaps, but
only in the measures that serve to make it great. AAAAB
From 147,000
There may not be room in the back for top hats, but the Rapide is
the most elegant four-door sports car in the world. AAAAC
Bentley Mulsanne
Rolls-Royce Ghost
From 229,000
If the Phantom is best experienced from the back seat, the
Mulsanne is a flagship best flown from the front. AAAAC
From 227,000
The affordable Rolls rounds out the silly-money list, narrowly
trumping the Flying Spur with its superior cabin. AAAAC

I was pleased to receive my Rearguard so
quickly because my Ford Kugas rear bumper
was recently badly scratched and damaged
in a car park (by a hit and run driver).
To replace it would cost 100s. Rearguards
cover up all the damage. It looks part of the
car. Incredibly easy to ft. An excellent accessory! Thank you
Rearguards! Mr D.R. Ford Kuga
